"Ferromanganese nodules are again of interest because of their high concentrations of Ni, Co, Cu as well as REE. With regards to an operational underwater mining industry, one of the main questions and important requests is to finding a method that can predict the abundance of nodules with high accuracy within reasonable time spans, without many requirements for ground truth data; and all these on an operational scale and ideally automated. In this regard, we present results of a study based on the combination of highresolution multibeam and optical data acquired by an AUV using specific machine learning techniques to reveal a detailed distribution of the Mn-nodules in correlation to the seafloor terrain. The accuracy of the method employed and results gained were validated and approved through comprehensive statistical analysis and by comparison to box-core data.Study AreaOur study area (AUV survey block G77) is located in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) (Eastern Central Pacific Ocean), an area that has been receiving international research and industrial attention for many years already (e.g. McKelvey et al., 1979; Bernhard and Blissenbach, 1988, von Stackelberg and Beiersdorf, 1991, Jeong et al. 1996). Block G77 covers an area of 9.5km2 in a depth between -4478m and -4536m. The area is characterised by gentle slopes 0-5° (0-3° in most of the area and only in the outer parts of the Block slopes can exceed 5°). The seafloor is characterised by moderate to low rugosity, the only exception being a small area in the eastern part, where sub-recent smallscale volcanic activity created 15 cone-shaped morphological features of up to 55m height and 150m width that are clustered in an area of 700 x 380m (Figure 1)."

Many of the Pb-Zn massive sulfide deposits of the Bathurst area in northern New Brunswick, Canada, are intimately associated with laterally continuous iron formation (IF) (Figure 1). This IF is a fossil laminated, exhalative, chemical sediment. Together, the IF and the Brunswick #12, Brunswick #6, and Austin Brook deposits (rightmost discontinuous horizon on Figure 1) are collectively referred to as the "Brunswick Belt". To date we have only studied the Brunswick Belt and have not examined the horizon along which the QSR, CNE and Flat Landing Brook deposits lie. The Bathurst area is underlain by the Tetagouche Group (Figure 2), a Cambro(?)-Ordovician sequence of metasedimentary and bimodal metavolcanic rocks that was intruded by mafic to felsic plutons and subsequently deformed during the Taconic Orogeny. The stratigraphic sequence consists of shales and greywackes that are overlain by carbonaceous shales and felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks; these are in turn overlain by mafic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The massive sulfide deposits and IF occur within the upper portions of the felsic volcanic rocks in close association with carbnaceous metasedimentary footwall rocks (Figure 2).

Nautilus Minerals is exploring for high-grade gold, silver, copper, and zinc-rich submarine massive sulphide deposits (SMS) within the territorial waters of the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. Work to date has shown that these systems contain spectacularly high metal grades. To date a total of 88 surface sulphide grab samples have been collected from Nautilus’ Solwara 1 Prospect within EL 1196 in the Manus Basin, returning average grades of 15.5 g/t gold, 191g/t silver, 10.8% copper, and 4.7% Zn. Drilling in January/February 2006 confirmed the presence of this high grade system, with sulphide intersections up to 19m below the sea floor, with a best intersection of 11.6m at 9.1 g/t Au and 13.1% Cu.

Deep sea mining of manganese nodules actually will have an environmental impact to the seafloor and to the water column. However, we are far from being able to predict the possible consequences. Therefore, in 1992 environmental studies were conducted with the R/V Sonne in a manganese nodule field of the Peru Basin. The bathymetry of the seafloor was mapped using the hydrosweep system and the distribution and type of sediments were investigated by the parasound system and by collecting surface samples and sediment cores. Deep towing of a side-scan sonar system revealed a Mn encrustation of sediments and a nodule coverage of variable density. Along the tracks of a photo sledge a great variability of bottom fauna and of bioturbation was observed. Bottom-mechanical investigations of surface-near sediments were completed on board. Additionally water samples were collected near the sea floor to determine character and amount of dissolved and suspended particles. Manganese nodules and crusts were collected at 80 locations. In many aspects the nodules differ from those of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone: Big cauliflower-shaped nodules with growth rates up to 160 mm/ Ma may reach a maximum size of 24 cm in diameter, maximum abundance may be 44 kg/m2, the mean size of buried nodules is greater than that of surface nodules. The reason for that difference is due to the relatively high bioproductivity in surface waters and to a Mn redox boundary in the sediment column 10 cm below the seafloor. Histograms of nodules showing the distribution of size and growth type clearly indicate that the growth history is different for basins, slopes and tops of seamounts and ridges. Nodules with diameters >7 cm show mainly diagenetic and to a minor degree hydrogenetic growth. Smaller nodules of the same assemblage are composed mainly of hydrogenetically grown Mn oxide. The optimum diagenetic growth occurs within the sediment immediately above the Mn redox boundary, a level which is not reached by the small nodules.

Recent investigations located at least six major massive sulfide deposits (dimensions measured in tens to hundreds of meters) within a 50-km-long segment of Escanaba Trough, the sediment-covered axial valley of southern Gorda Ridge. The sediment fill is intercalated silt and sand turbidites and hemipelagic mud with a maximum thickness of 500 m. Several volcanic edifices, spaced at approximately 15-km intervals along the ridge axis, penetrate and locally breach the sediment. The largest sulfide deposits form mounds and ridges on the steep flanks of structurally unstable sediment-capped blocks that have been uplifted above the volcanic edifices; both sediment and sulfide deposits are undergoing rapid erosion and redeposition. Although hydrothermal activity appears to be absent at most sulfide fields, 220°C fluids are discharging from the tops of sulfide mounds near 41°00'N lat, 127°31'W long. Recent pillow lavas and sheetflows erupted onto the sediment-covered sea floor less than 500 m away from the active vent field. The massive sulfide deposits have compositional characteristics that differ from deposits formed on sediment-free spreading axes. The Escanaba Trough deposits include Fe- and Cu-rich, Zn- and Pb-poor massive sulfide mounds, polymetal (Zn-Fe-Pb-Cu-As-Ag-Sb-Sn) sulfide vent structures, abundant barite-rich chimneys, crusts, and sinter cones, and thermogenic petroleum in the sulfide and sediment. Substantial consideration has been given to the implications that the morphology of the Chatham Rise deposit will have on mining operations. The glacio-tectonic processes involved in the distribution of nodules on the rise has in several areas been quite significant. The recent cruises by Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited (CRPL) have collected data which has affirmed the assumptions previously made and catered for in historic resource estimations. The deformation and displacement of the phosphorite during glacial periods and the redistribution of the mobile sand during interglacial periods is interpreted to have produced a highly variable pattern of phosphorite concentration (kg phosphorite/m2) and coverage (% phosphorite/sample weight). The phosphorite resource probably has a significant spatial variability at a scale of tens of metres. Results of recent surveys show phosphorite-rich patches alternating with phosphorite-poor areas at distances of less than 20 m. The high spatial variability of the deposit has had a bearing on how historical information for the project has been regarded and integrated with the recent exploration approach and data collection process. This coupled with the proposed extraction tool has influenced the size, nature, extent and siting of the proposed mining blocks

The paper concerns with some questions of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) control system design, which allows a motion at rough undersea terrain. The AUV advantages reveal itself completely during exploration of such objects as seamounts and reefs area. These objects are characterized by steep slopes (30 degrees and above) and chaotic situated obstacles (rock debris, pinnacles, escarpments). Uses of other technical facilities for operating in such formations are difficult, dangerous or impossible. These regions take an interest due to the presence of iron-manganese crusts. Modern AUV can estimate density of mineral by means of still camera or video recorder. For this reason the vehicle has to move with the distance of 3-5 meters from seabed. Under such conditions micro- and mesorelief presents a considerable danger for AUV. The AUV can bypass underwater obstacles in the various ways. However, in any case AUV motion will be characterized by intensive maneuvering on various speeds (from 0 up to 1.5 m/s), circular change of tractive force vector and, hence, a circular flow about the hull. So, AUV is equipped with the propulsion system, which provides free modes of motion.

The seabed deposits type and distribution are very complex at the hydrothermal field. In this paper, we provided an approach to study the seabed deposits classification at the Precious Stone Mountain hydrothermal field (PSMHF) using MultiBeam sonar data . The PSMHF was found in the Galapogas microplate at the Leg 3 of the Chinese COMRA 21st Cruise. Using this approach, the seabed deposits at the PSMHF are mainly classified into three types, which are rock, breccia and sediment, respectively. We can find the distribution of the three types of seabed deposits according to the sonar backscatter data. The rocks are mostly distributed around the hydrothermal vent. The breccia are located at the foot of the vent. Most sediments are distributed at the southwest to the vent due to bottom current. Combining with seabed video, TV-Grab sample and the backscatter data, we draw the map of the seabed deposits distribution at the PSMHF.

Coastal and marine aggregate (sand and gravel) mining on US continental shelves is a major activity that supplies industrial and commercial demands for these raw materials. Because Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts contain significant shoreline segments that are in a critical state of erosion, sand-gravel and mixed sediment (sands with a high percentage of silt-plus-clay) deposits are mined in efforts to mitigate land loss. Sandy shores, and to a limited extent gravel coasts, erode by shoreline retreat due to relative sea-level rise and sediment starvation in littoral drift patterns. Mostly gravel shores occur in high latitudes and shorelines often advance seaward due to isostatic rebound following the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum 18,000 YBP). Sandy and fine-grained shores occurring in middle and low latitudes of the conterminous United States are problem coasts that require beach renourishment and reconstruction of barrier islands. Muddy coasts of the Mississippi Delta region are especially problematic because some islands are literally disappearing in response to subsidence. Replacement of sediments lost to the littoral drift system or returned to sedimentary sinks by drowning is thus a critical endeavor that involves annually dredging hundreds of millions of cubic meters of sediments from the continental shelf area. The types of shelf sediments that are amenable to marine mining techniques, their occurrence, and means of detection are highlighted in this paper. Minable Sediments on the Continental Shelf Wide varieties of sedimentary bodies that occur on the continental shelf are amenable to mining for beach renourishment and barrier island (beach-dune-marsh system) reconstruction. Relict terrestrial deposits make up a small but important proportion of shelf sediments that were deposited on coastal plains, now drowned by the post-glacial sea-level rise to form continental shelves. Examples of these deposits include drowned moraines, outwash plains, eskers, and kettles along the northern Atlantic coast in addition to siliciclastics along middle latitude Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf coasts. Special cases include carbonate sequences along tropical costs of Florida and the muddy coasts of deltas, mostly in Louisiana. Specific types of minable deposits thus include shoreface attached sand sheets, dunes, and ridges in addition to offshore inter-reefal sands (between coral reefs in the Florida Reef Tract), bank deposits, and sand waves (ridges) that extend into US territorial waters. Nearshore siliciclastics include ebb-tidal deltas and bars. Drowned river valleys occur along all three US coasts and can be exploited for their fluvial sands if the covering mud sheets are thin.

The International Seabed Authority is currently considering regulations for prospecting and exploration for polymetallic sulphides and cobalt rich crusts. The deposits of these two types of minerals are very different from polymetallic nodules for which the Authority has already adopted regulations in 2000. The presentation will discuss the nature of the deposits, the inadequacy of information and data concerning these deposits and their environment, as well as the problems of defining the method of allocation and the size of the areas to be licensed for exploration, and those to be retained for exploitation; the current status of the draft regulations being considered by the Council of the Authority.

The Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ) has started the project in the fiscal year of 1989 under the administration of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry '(MITI). The purpose of this study is to assess the impact on the ocean environment caused by manganese nodules mining. Summary of research and survey of MMAJ is as follows: 1. Evaluation of environment impact The aim of this study is to assess impact for ocean environment by manganese nodules mining. It is studied by using three-dimensional hydrodynamic prediction model and by carrying out cultural experiment of surface fauna with adding deepsea water and sediment. Development of hydrodynamic prediction model for discharged water at ocean surface has started in 1989. On board cultural experiment was carried out in the Japanese application area in the eastern Pacific in May 1991 and in May 1992.

The Federal government has a lengthy history in supporting and conducting research in the ocean mining and minerals field. The Federal effort has been and is currently focused primarily in four agencies: the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the Department of Commerce, and the Geological Survey (USGS), the Bureau of Mines (BuMines), and more recently the Minerals Management Service (MMS) within the Department of the Interior. While NOAA and the USGS have played dominant roles in mapping and geologic studies, and the MMS has recently provided funding for several task force studies within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) , the Bureau of Mines has conducted research in mining technology, minerals processing, resource definition, and economic evaluation of minerals from the seabed for over 20 years. These studies have yielded considerable minerals information regarding manganese nodules and crusts, placers, mineral sands, phosphorites, and sulfides. This paper reviews the past achievements in ocean mining and minerals programs starting in the late 1960's, describes current research and information efforts, and presents an outlook for Bureau of Mines research and information gathering efforts. In October 2004 Placer Dome entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Nautilus Minerals, to explore for Submarine Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits on Nautilus? PNG exploration tenements. Placer/Nautilus currently holds approximately 15,000 km2 of tenements in PNG waters, either granted or under application, covering all reported seafloor hydrothermal vent occurrences.

Ifremer, on behalf of the French government, holds an Exploration Contract with the ISA for polymetallic nodules in the CCFZ. As part of its exploration activities, the NODULE (2015) cruise was conducted to acquire a 50 m resolution bathymetric coverage of the eastern sectors of the Contract. In 2017, Ifremer initiated an update of the Contract’s mineral resource estimate. Metal grades and nodule abundance were modelled using ordinary kriging. The inferred mineral resource is 436 Mt (wet) of polymetallic nodules at an average abundance of 10.7 kg/m² with a cut-off grade of 7 kg/m². Based on the geological data, seamounts, sedimentary basins and steep slopes contain no nodules. Technical studies of most of the contractors have determined that nodule collectors could not maneuver on slopes above 5 to 10°. Thus, Ifremer has selected a quite conservative slope threshold of 7 % (about 4°) and a backscatter threshold of -29.5 dB to delineate nodule-free areas. This has a significant impact on the resource estimate, as about 54 % of the eastern Contract areas are excluded. Near-seafloor high-resolution mapping and photographic transects, associated with finer-spaced box-core sampling could constitute a next step to better constrain the mineable areas and to get a higher level of confidence in the resource estimation.

The world?s data available on near sea-bottom gas-hydrate accumulation and deep-water fluid-discharge areas are presented in this paper. Gas-hydrate accumulation associated with fluid discharge (mud volcanoes, gas seeps, gas-saturated water seeps) is characterized by the following. First, the largest hydrate accumulations in sediments are located at shallow subbottom depths and have well-defined limits, especially in the upper subbottom part. Second, gas-hydrate formation in fluid-discharge areas is a present-day process, with the global occurrence of deep-water fluid-discharge areas numbering up to about ten thousand, and with all the seep areas being favorable for the formation of near-sea-bottom gas-hydrate accumulation. Third and principal, gas resources in the hydrates can be considered as renewable. Estimates of possible gas volume in single accumulations of hydrates and the global budget, as well as possible methods of gas utilization from such gas-hydrate accumulations are discussed in the paper.

The presentation describes new data concerning the age of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal fields. The collection of massive sulfides recovered from six hydrothermal fields has been dated using the 230Th/U method. The range of the data obtained is rather wide: from 2.2 up to 65.1 thousand years BP. Three stages of hydrothermal activity were detected for this 65 Kyr period of geological evolution: modern (0 -5), 20-25 and 58–65 thousand BP (Figure 1). This conclusion was confirmed by dating the associated metalliferous sediment layers which also indicate the hydrothermal events led to the formation of sulfide mineralization. There is a correlation between the age and size of massive sulfide deposits: older deposits are larger (Table 1). This and other applications of obtained data will be discussed in presentation.

Geochemical exploration for marine placers involves the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geochemical data. Recent technological advances such as in-situ analysis systems and microcomputers have greatly improved our ability to acquire and process data, but their full benefits cannot be realized until we also develop improved methods for reducing and interpreting large amounts of raw geochemical data. Toward this end, our research has sought to identify existing and/or develop new geostatistical techniques for use in marine placer exploration. Each technique has been tested by evaluating its performance in the analysis of existing data sets. The data sets typically include the results of chemical analyses of suites of sediment samples collected from areas of known or suspected platinum and gold placers along the Bering Sea coast of Alaska. Results to date indicate that three geostatistical methods (subpopulation partitioning analysis, comparative factor analysis, and end-member compositional factor analysis) are useful in identifying elemental groups which can serve as "pathfinders" in the search for marine placers, and are also helpful in discerning the generic geochemical basis under lying observed statistical correlations between pathfinder elements and placer minerals. The U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS), U.K., conducted a sidescan sonar survey of the U. S. Exclusive Economic Zone in the Gulf of Mexico from August 7 to October 22, 1985. A reconnaissance-scale view of 120,000 square nautical miles of sea floor seaward of the shelf-edge was obtained by using the GLORIA (Geologic Long-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan sonar system. After these data were merged with GLORIA data from an earlier survey (1982) of the northwestern Gulf, a preliminary mosaic was constructed at a scale of 1:375,000. From this mosaic, we can identify morphologic features and interpret sea-floor processes. The extensive deformation of the continental slope seaward of Texas and Louisiana by salt tectonics has resulted in a complex pattern of basins and salt dome highs. One continuous meandering channel was identified in this portion of the Gulf, extending from the shelf edge to the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain. Bottom currents have reworked the sediments in this channel's levees seaward of the Sigsbee Escarpment, the seaward edge of the salt front, suggesting that this channel may no longer be actively transporting sediment. Talus appears to lie along the base of the Sigsbee Escarpment, suggesting that erosion and deposition is occur- ring along this front. Three other discontinuous channel systems can be identified on the mosaic and appear to have contributed sediments to the deep Gulf.

Issues of deep-seabed mining are discussed since four decades and extensive efforts have been invested in oceanographic studies related to environmentally sound harvesting of polymetallic nodules. Because mining on the deep seafloor seems to range from large-scale, two-dimensional dredging or scooping up of the ore from the uppermost surface sediment layer to more localized drilling or deeper digging into a three-dimensional ore body, it appears to be justified to reconsider some concepts for environmental impact evaluation. Based on the experience gained during preceding years in environmental studies related to polymetallic nodule mining, some interrelated hypotheses and proposals will be presented. It is suggested that these proposals be considered in future plans for environmental impact evaluation and that observations on community re-establishment be conducted before massive sulphide mining or other ore extractions enter the commercial mining phase.

Canada has a long history of marine-related industry and onshore mining. Even so, commercial interest in marine mining, excluding seawater mineral extraction and offshore extensions of hardrock deposits such as iron and coal, has been sporadic; despite the fact that shelf mineral deposits supply a significant proportion of the national market requirements for many countries. Several factors have accounted for this including: a relative abundance of onland mineral desposits; the fact that onland deposits can be mined using conventional technology; and, a general lack of knowledge and public awareness as to Canadian offshore non-fuel mineral resource potential. In the mid-1970s the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources formed the Departmental Coordinating Committee on Ocean Mining. The Committee addressed the question of shelf non-fuel mineral resource potential and concluded that, while several reports had raised the possibilty of this alternative source, there had not been a systematic evaluation of the resource base. This led to the formation of a Shelf Working Group, whose task it was to outline and implement a departmental program to advance our knowledge of shelf resource potential.
