This report presents the results of a synthesis on the design and analysis of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. The synthesis included an industry survey concerning the practice of ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation. Participation in the survey was solicited by advertisements in several trade magazines and by e-mail for the DFI membership. The survey participants numbered 150. Their professional roles include consulting engineers, specialty contractors, design engineers, government engineers, and academicians. They represent a variety of geographical areas including North/Central/South America, United Kingdom, Middle East, Caribbean, Hawaii, Japan, India, Egypt, France, Australia and New Zealand. Upon completion of the survey, several professionals in the field of liquefaction and ground improvement were interviewed for them to elaborate on the survey results. The interviews are included in the Appendix of this report. Financial support for the project was provided by DFI and Dan Brown and Associates PC. The concept of the liquefaction mitigation synthesis was developed by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee in recognition that: (a) The results of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance have challenged previously longheld beliefs about liquefaction and associated mitigation techniques, and; (b) The DFI membership and the engineering/construction industry are interested to know if and how engineers and designers are subsequently adjusting their practice in consideration of recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance. For more detailed information on recent research and post-earthquake reconnaissance, presentations are available from the State-of-the-Art Forum: Liquefaction Consequences and Mitigation that was held in St. Louis in 2012. A commentary of the state-of-practice in ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation (prepared by DFI?s Ground Improvement Committee) is included in this issue of the DFI Journal. The author would like to thank the participants of the survey and especially Mr. Mike Jeffries, Dr. Les Youd, and Dr. Ikuo Towhata for their willingness to share their expertise in interviews. Work started on the building of the Amsterdam Concert Hall in 1880 by driving over 2000 wooden piles of 13 m on which foundation-beams out of wood and brickwork were made. During construction the design was changed. This was due to the latest German developments, requiring double walls instead of single, so that the space in between could be used for ventilation and heating. Therefore the pile load, originally designed at approximately 100 kN, increased even to 170 kN for some piles, causing settlements and unacceptable cracks in the brickwork. Settlements of up to 18 cm were measured. In 1985/1986 around 400 vibration-free Tubex-displacement-piles were installed under the Concert Hall, with a shaft of 0355 mm, a pile shoe of 0560 mm and a pile length of approximately 18 m. After these Tubex piles had been installed they took over the complete weight of the whole building, thus eliminating further settlements and damage. 95% of all the construction activities took place while the concerts went on. The chosen solution also made it possible to create a new basement under the Concert Hall as an extension for dressing-rooms etc.

This paper discusses the pile foundation of tall buildings in Shenzhen region. For 156 constructed tall buildings exceeding 18 storeys, about 86. 5 per cent of the sum. The two main types of foundation used are the semi?machine?bored/slurry drilled cast?in?situ pile and the excavation pile (hand ?dug caisson). The engineering geologiical condition in Shenzhen was analysed. In general, the bed rock level is not too deep. It belongs to hard rock, but the geologic structure is more complex and the tectonic fissures is plenty. According to experiences of the researches, tests, designs and constructions of pile foundation, we present the basic design principle of pile foundations for tall buildings as follows; (1) pile strength control to select the pile type and to choice the cross sectional dimen­sions, must be in compliance with the strength of the pile. (2) bearing stratum strongly weathered, moderartely weathered and slightly weathered rock may be used as the bearing stratum. (3) bearing pile bored /drilled cast-in-situ pile designed as an end bearing pile. (4) friction pile precast concrete pile, prestressed concrete tubular pile and driven cast-in-situ pile designe as a friction pile. In case, pile design is in compliance with these principles, it may be safe, economical and reasonable.

The use of continuous flight auger piles has increased significantly in the U.K. to such an extent that it is now the most widely used method of constructing small diameter bored piles. This paper describes the improvements in equipment, techniques and particularly monitoring that have led to this growth. A review of the equipment in use describes how purpose built self erecting machines have been generally adopted. Improvements in ancilliary equipment are described. Concrete has almost completely replaced grout and techniques have been developed to extend the length of reinforcement that can be placed. Leading specialist contractors have developed instrumentation to monitor the construction of the pile (in terms of time, depth, torque, concrete pressure and flow) and keep a record for checking. A further significant development of this monitoring by means of sensors at various levels in the auger stem is described. The results obtained from this monitoring are reviewed and future developments discussed.

"Geo5 Software is gaining popularity worldwide due to its expediency in analysis and design of pile foundation. The analysis is based on various theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical methods available in existing literature and various country standards. Moreover, the ultimate resistance of pile in the software is based CSN 73 1002, Fellenius method, NAVFAC DM 7.2 and Tomlinson method. Due to the specificity in calculation of ultimate resistance, it becomes necessary to validate the results arrived using the software for better accuracy. Furthermore, the above-mentioned methods are not necessarily popular in every design offices. Therefore, an attempt has been made to predict the efficiency of Geo5-v15 software to analyze the pile foundation by comparing it with the results obtained using the analysis based on Indian Standard IS 2911:2010, performed with spreadsheet specifically designed for the same purpose. The accompanying outcome of the comparison and several shortcomings found in the design part associated with the software has been highlighted in the later part of the paper. Besides, the optimization tool present in the software is also described for the more efficient and economic design of pile foundation, hence contributing as practical aid to structural engineers.INTRODUCTIONThe analysis of individual pile foundation and pile in groups can be said to include the three main important parameters – Ultimate bearing capacity, Settlement and Structural Design. The first two parameters are to be evaluated to check the reliability of foundation against ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state. The third parameter includes the analysis of pile against both horizontal and vertical load. This parameter mainly intends to evaluate the size of foundation and the amount of reinforcement. Geo5 is a software which can expediently compute the above mentioned three parameters just by the mere input of the necessary factors. The ultimate bearing capacity analysis in Geo5 is based on various theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical methods available in existing literature and various country standards depending upon the drained and undrained condition of soil (Bowles, 1968; CSN 73 1002,1987; Felenius,1991; NAVFAC DM 7.2,1984; Tomlinson,1977). However, the method mentioned in IS 2911 (2010) is not the same and have slight variations in way of evaluating the parameters which affect ultimate bearing capacity. Therefore, it becomes necessary to evaluate the efficiency of Geo5 with respect to the value of ultimate bearing capacity and therefore, asserting the confidence in the software based method for the convenience of the designs in Indian Scenario. The present study aims to evaluate the efficiency of Geo5 v-15 software in predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of pile foundation. The results of the software are compared with the bearing capacity calculated using IS 2911 (2010) with the help of excel sheet. Moreover, as the software is frequently put under revision, therefore a comparison of this version has also been made with the latest version of Geo5 (2017) to check whether the latest revision has accounted for the discovered shortcomings. The design steps performed in the software is also shown. As Geo5 make use of IS 456 (2000) for the design purpose, hence it can be considered as reliable with respect to the estimate of the third parameter. Furthermore, the optimization process is also shown in the later part of the paper to emphasize the simplicity of the software in economizing the design cost."

Ground Modification construction is rapidly evolving in the United States. An assessment of the construction status of Ground Modification methods with their dates of introduction and general acceptance in the United States is summarized. Seven of these techniques are discussed in depth with short case histories; namely, Dynamic Deep Compaction, vibro-compaction, vibro-Replacement, chemical grouting, compaction grouting, slurry grouting and jet grouting. Additional case histories are presented to illustrate the trend of combining Ground Modification techniques to solve specific site problems.

In general cast-in place piles will have an irregular pile shape. However, it is possible that these irregularities are so large that they may lead to pile deficiencies. It is very rarely possible to examine the pile foundations visually. Also the performance of a static or dynamic load test on each individual pile is not practical and much too expensive. This is the reason why pile integrity tests have been developed: to reduce the risk of inadequate pile foundations by performing a simple test. Pile integrity tests are non destructive tests which are carried out after a pile has been installed. Over the years a number of techniques have been developed of which the most important techniques are briefly described in this paper. Of all pile integrity testing methods, Sonic Integrity Testing is the most widely used method in western Europe. This method has been developed by TNO some 15 years ago. Since then the method has been improved, largely due to advances in micro-processing. A major improvement was made by the introduction of digital signal processing techniques. This made the Sonic Integrity Testing method more accurate (smaller defects can be detected), faster (more than 200 piles can be tested on a single working-day) and more reliable (the results are easier to interprete). A few cases will be presented which will show the usefulness of the Sonic Integrity Testing method. In one of these cases, a helpful tool for interpretation of the results is explained: the Sonic Integrity Testing Simulation program TNOWAVE. Notwithstanding the fact that Sonic Integrity Testing is a powerful method, it has also some strict limitations. These will be discussed at the end of the paper.

"Abstract Although one can think that it is very low the probability of a seism occurrence during the execution of an excavation in an urban lot protected by a diaphragm wall curtain, reality shows that whenever a seism occurs in an urban area several diaphragm walls will be affected by it. So it is advisable to consider the seismic action when designing a diaphragm wall curtain. The paper refers the main information about the seismic design of diaphragm walls according to the Eurocodes 7 and 8 and to the Portuguese Norms related to them (respectively NP EN 1997-1 2010 and NP EN 1998-5 2010), as the Eurocodes consider the possibility of each European country to adopt their own seismic parameters as the seismic risk is different in each country. Start Date: April 4, 1988 Completion Date: Dec. 29, 1989 Contractor: SCI Contractors Past and present transportation centers will come together at International District Station, located at the south entrance to the tunnel next to the turn-of-the-century Union Station train depot. The area will bustle once again with activity as commuters and visitors converge on the modern transit station at the edge of Seattle's International District. Buses coming from south Interstate 5 and Interstate 90 will enter the tunnel through this station. [ ] International District Station is an open-air station, 1,060 feet long and 82 feet wide (about 15,400 cubic yards of concrete were used to build the station). A concrete lid over the southern portion of the station staging area is held in place by 131 support piles. The station will include entrances on Jackson Street and King Street. Union Pacific Realty is planning to build an office and retail complex upon the lid. The station also has an international flair. Symbols of the Chinese zodiac will be etched into the station plaza floor. The station platform walls will be lined with large steel panels embellished with designs in origami?a Japanese folded paper art form. [ ]

After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) initiated an overview of the Caltrans Bridge Design Specifications (BDS) and bridge seismic design practice in California. This overview is continuing under the direction of the Applied Technologies Council (ATC-32), to review and revise as necessary existing standards, performance criteria, specifications, and practices for design and construction of new bridge structures within California. The ATC-32 project began in August 1991 and is expected to be completed in 1995. Since 1990, Caltrans project-specific seismic criteria have been developed and implemented on the I-280 and I-480 projects in San Francisco. Caltrans and an independent seismic safety review panel continue to develop and implement these criteria on other projects. In 1991 and 1992, project-specific seismic criteria were used on the I-880 reconstruction project in Oakland. The seismic safety review panel considered the I-880 seismic design criteria a state-of-the-art methodology to ensure seismic safety against collapse of bridge structures subjected to a maximum credible seismic event. This paper highlights the 1992 "I-880 Reconstruction Project Seismic Design Criteria Review" report prepared by the Seismic Safety Review Panel and Caltrans Division of Structures and will compare pre-1989 BDS and AASHTO methodologies to the I-880 criteria.

THIS PAPER deals with the analysis of results from axial testing of vertical single piles, i.e. the most common field test per-formed. Despite the numerous tests which have been carried out and the many Papers which have reported on such tests and the analysis thereof, the understanding of pile test loading in current engineering practice leaves much to be de-sired. The reason for this is that the engineers have concerned themselves with mainly only one question: "Does the pile have a certain least capacity?", finding little of practical value in analysing the actual capacity and the pile-soil interaction. This Paper aims to show that engineering value can be gained from elaborating on a pile test ? during the actual testing in the Held, as well as in the analysis of the results. The first portion of the notes make use of an earlier Paper by the author (Fellenius. 1975). However, additional views and recent literature have been incorporated.

The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shaft (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons, ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

Augered-Cast-in-Place piles have been used successfully for many deep foundation applications. The four case studies discussed herein describe ACIP pile projects where problems developed during ACIP pile installation requiring changes to the method or sequence of installation. The case studies illustrate the importance of understanding existing subsurface conditions and project constraints when considering the use of this pile type. Ground loosening and over-excavation of soil during the augering process, a significant concern for fine to medium sands and non-plastic silts below the water table, can significantly impact adjacent structures. This risk needs to be evaluated during the pile selection process and generally can be mitigated, but not eliminated, by requiring the use of piling equipment with high torque and slow auger rotation speed to advance the auger with minimum amount of rotation. In some applications where high lateral stresses in the soil are present such as at the base of retaining structures, the use of ACIP piles may not be appropriate if structure movement is unacceptable. On the other hand, ACIP piles have been successfully used to support deep foundations in preconsolidated varved deposits where the new structure was designed to accommodate recompression settlement.

Nondestructive testing of deep foundations for integrity problems made great strides in the late 1980's. Inexpensive portable computers have allowed the immediate and rapid processing of field measured acceleration records which can provide insight into the relative structural integrity of a previously installed foundation member. Although the gathering, processing and displaying of the data is now straightforward, interpretation remains at times rather challenging. This paper provides a brief introduction into the theoretical basis for data interpretation and the hardware necessary for data acquisition. Five case studies are discussed which demonstrate the varied applications of low strain integrity testing of deep foundations and the efficiency at which they are completed. BACKGROUND One dimensional wave mechanics, when applied to a linear elastic pile with a length that is an order of magnitude greater than its width, provides a straightforward basis for the interpretation of motion measurements made at a pile top. When impacted, a stress wave travels through the pile at a wave speed, c, which is a function of the elastic modulus, E, and mass density p (i.e., E=pc2). The applied load F, and particle velocity v, at a point are related by the equation F=Zv. For a cross-sectional area A, the proportionality constant Z is equal to EA/c. Because Z is a measure of the pile's resistance to change in velocity it is called the pile impedance.
