"INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

Considerable effort is currently directed towards the development of potential non-explosive mining methods with the potential to allow continuous mining in narrow reef conditions. Besides improving productivity, continuous mining results in concentrated mining which has a significant impact on reducing infrastructural costs. Impact Ripping and Water Pulse Rock Breaking have been tried on gold mines, whereas Activation, Mini-Disc? cutting and the Plasma Holemaker are currently being tested on platinum mines. The organisation?s many years of experience in novel rockbreaking, together with its world-wide collaborator network, has placed it in a unique position to assist the mining industry and manufacturers in developing and/or adapting existing technologies for application underground. Currently a range of technologies are being investigated, which have reached different stages of maturity. "This paper compares the behaviour of gold and ore in the grinding circuit of Hemlo Gold Ltd. Particular attention is given to grinding kinetics, classification behaviour, and liberation. For grinding kinetics, laboratory grinding of gold flakes and silica, 840-1200 um in size (14/20 mesh), was also performed to provide a standard for comparison and to study in a controlled environment the mechanisms of breakage, folding, smearing and impacting.Grinding kinetics were characterized at laboratory scale with breakage and selection functions. The breakage function showed that 75% of gold disappearing from the 840-1200 um class reported to the 600-840 um; this figure is much higher than for silica ( 46%) or most other minerals, and implies that comparatively fewer fine fragments are produced from the breakage of gold flakes, on account of gold's malleability. The selection function of silica was four times that of gold. At plant scale, the ratio of the selection function of ore and gold increased from 6 for at 50-100 um to 20 at 500-1000 um.Observation of original flakes and their fragments with the scanning electron microscope showed that the main mechanism of ""grinding"" from the 840-1200 um to the 600-840 um class was folding rather than actual breakage. This was confirmed by a measure of individual flake weight. The postulated breakage cycle is that relatively globular flakes become increasingly serrated through grinding; they can then regain their original shape through folding and reflattening into cylindrical and spherical shapes, as the majority does; however, some fragments will at this point undergo actual breakage. Photographic evidence is presented to support the proposed mechanisms.Smearing of gold unto silica was observed when silica was ground after a gold, and embedding of silica into gold flakes when gold was ground after a silica. Both mechanisms occur whenever gold and harder minerals are jointly ground, and result in ""unliberation"" of gold. It is postulated that smearing of gold onto other minerals plays an important role in explaining how gravity recovery can increase overall gold metallurgy, especially when used ahead of flotation.Classification of gold in the primary hydrocyclones takes place at a much finer cut-size than ore, 20 vs. 57 um. This and the slower grinding kinetics result in high gold circulating loads in the primary loop, 6700%, and a gold content in the primary cyclone underflow (PCUF) is twenty four times that of the ore. The gold size distribution for primary cyclone overflow is much finer than that of the ore, although they are essentially similar in the PCUF.Liberation, or more accurately ""gravity recoverability"", was assessed with a 7.5 cm (3"") Knelson concentrator. It varied between the thirties for the primary mill discharge and two cyclone overflows, to highs of 89 to 92% for the PCUF and secondary mill discharge, 89 and 92%, respectfully."

L 'objectif principal de SIDBEC-NORMINES est de produire six millions de tonnes de boulettes d'oxyde de fer par année, dont trois millions auront une faible teneur en silice afin de répondre aux exigences de la réduction directe. Les installations de SIDBEC-NORMINES sont adjacentes aux installations portuaires de la Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier, à l'est de la ville de Port-Cartier. L 'ensemble est conçu pour produire les deux types de boulettes avec deux circuits d'agglomération installes en parallèle. La production de concentré enrichi (68% Fe et plus) est obtenue dans une usine d'enrichissement utilisant le precédé de séparation magnétique hum ide ahaute intensite (separateurs Jones). À l'usine de bouletage proprement dite, on effectue Ie broyage du concentré et sa mise en boulettes sur disques; l'in duration des deux types de boulettes est obtenue sur deux chaînes d'agglomération Dravo dont chacune a une capacité annuelle nominale de trois millions de tonnes.

Samples of the reacting suspension particles were taken from the reaction shaft of a commercial flash furnace at different heights. The processes of matte and slag formation and morphology of the samples in the shaft were observed and analyzed. Variations of matte and slag composition in the shaft were investigated. By analyzing the samples taken from the settler at different locations, settler processes were studied such as slag formation, agglomeration and separation of matte-slag phases, Fe3O4 reduction, copper-in-slag reduction etc. In accordance with the characteristic of matte and slag formation the flash furnace can be divided into 6 functional regions, and a mechanism model called as “Micro bath process” is proposed for matte and slag formation in a commercial flash furnace. INTRODUCTION During flash smelting, concentrate particles scattered in the reaction shaft complete their oxidation reactions in suspension. The droplets produced fall into the settler beneath with a small amount of un-melted solid particles, agglomerate and separate into matte and slag layers which are tapped out from their tap holes separately. With respect to the extent of slagging reaction in the reaction shaft, there isn’t any commonly accepted understanding in literature (Kimura, Ojima, Mori & Ishii, 1986; Kemori & Kondo et al.,1988; Kemori, Denholm & Kurokawa, 1989; Fagerlund &Jalkanen, 2000). Some assume that the slagging reaction in the shaft can be ignored and some propose that all slag is produced in the shaft. With regards to the characteristics of the physical-chemical changes of concentrate particle in the reaction shaft, although there are some research results reported from pilot scale and commercial scale experiments (Kemori, Ojima & Kondo, 1988; Hagni, Vierrether & Sohn, 1988; Jorgensen, Taylor, Dickinson & Stevenson, 1992; Swinbourne, Simak & Yazawa, 2002; Kivinen & Tuominen, 2005), they are generally limited themselves to theoretical analysis and calculations. No studies are published concerned with the processes of matte and slag generation in the shaft, quantitative analysis of the processes, variations of matte and slag composition and morphologies of the melts along the axis of the shaft, etc.

There are presently several issues that the mining industry is facing, such as underground air quality, deep mining and green house gas emissions, which could be addressed by the application of alternate energies. Several aspects must be considered by the industry in any drive to introduce new technologies within the context of a producing underground mine. This article presents several operational and support aspects that will evaluate the relevance of alternate energies, with emphasis on hydrogen power systems: operational drivers, commercial supply of technology, site supply system requirements, health and safety, capital and operating costs, mine production, corporate philosophy, and role of government. It is concluded that introduction of alternate energy technology requires a step-wise progression: Applicability to the industry, proof of concept testing, development of generic infrastructure, power systems and regulations, whole system studies and detailed studies of cost and risk versus benefits. The current initiative to apply fuel cells is at the proof of concept stage, entering the generic infrastructure stage.

"In 1997 when Royal Oak Mines Inc. went into receivership, the mineral processing technicians (mill operators) who had been working at Giant Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories for most of their career walked out with no credentials to serve as testimony of their knowledge and skills.As a result of new diamond mining activity and the establishment of socio-economic agreements, mining industry representatives approached the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Government of the Northwest Territories, in 1999. They requested support and direction to promote training and recognition for mineral processing technicians at BHP’s (BHP Diamonds Inc.) Ekati mine. ECE recommended the development of occupational standards and certification.This paper describes the development process and end products that resulted from this collaborative project between industry, government and education. In addition, industry representatives involved in the project share their views on the development process and the benefits of standards and certification.The conclusion invites industry members to support national occupational standards and certification with their associated benefits: standardized training in the workplace and institutions, proof of competence for hiring, recognition of prior learning, and a nationally and internationally recognized credential.INTRODUCTIONSwiftly changing labour market demands are nothing new in the North. The fur trade and mineral discoveries have brought employment to workers in a feast and famine cycle for decades. In the late 1990s, the Giant, Con, Lupin, Polaris and Nanasivik mines were nearing the end of productive runs. Many experienced workers found that without credentials, they had no proof of their abilities to offer prospective employers."

"The Sarcheshmeh mine processes 40,000 t/d of ore grading 0.9% Cu and 0.035% Mo. Grinding is effected in single stage ball mills using 80 mm forged steel balls, with an average consumption of 850 g/t. One of its 5 m diameter, 8 m length ball mills was emptied to measure the ball size distribution. The broken balls were first separated from the total charge, and the remaining balls classified into five size intervals of +7O mm, -70 +60 mm, -60+50 mm, -50+40 mm, -40 mm.The charge was composed of 280,534 balls (excluding broken balls) with a total mass of 305,180 kg. It was found that 4.0 % of the balls were broken; the size distribution of the charge was also markedly different from the desired one, in particular for the small-sized balls. For instance, 9% of the balls were expected to measure 2.54 to 3.18 cm in diameter, but none was found. On the other hand, the amount of top size balls was 30% higher than expected. The radial hardness of balls, which was determined by cutting the balls in halves, showed that the hardness sharply drops when the balls become smaller than 65 mm. The unexpected ball size distribution was attributed to the rapid change in the balls radial hardness. Based on the measured ball size distribution, a new ball make-up charge which uses 80% of 80 mm and 20% of 60 mm balls instead of 100% of 80 mm was proposed and implemented. The effect of the new ball make-up procedure in terms of ball consumption and grinding efficiency is being investigated."

"Competitive pressures dictate that the mining industry moves to larger mobile underground haulage equipment with more advanced equipment mechanization, higher levels of autonomous operation of machines, and longer periods between access by maintenance personnel. Since such new machines will of necessity be more complex than existing designs, machine reliability has become a key issue in progressing toward advanced mobile underground haulage equipment. Reliability and maintainability models of such equipment are practically non-existent in the literature. This paper addresses the issue of reliability and maintainability of mobile underground haulage equipment on two fronts: reliability modelling to enhance decision making for maintenance planning; and reliability simulation to enable evaluation of more rigorous production planning scenarios. A case study from a gold mine in the Chilean Andes is presented, for which reliability models of mobile underground haulage equipment, specifically load-hauldump vehicles and underground haul trucks, are developed, and a reliability-based simulation implemented. IntroductionMaintenance accounts for 20% to 35% of the overall operating budget for a typical underground operation, and hence represents the largest portion of the mine’s controllable operating costs (Cutifani et al., 1996; Campbell, 1997; Goddard, 1998). This paper presents a study conducted to assess sillmat behaviour during undercut mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of arching and sillmat thickness on stability. The design study investigated the effects of such parameters as stope width and height, closure strains, orebody geometry and inclination, wall roughness, fill properties and cure time on the stability of cemented sillmat during undercut mining. Arching effects have been quantified based on centrifuge modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Observations have indicated that the degree of arching is a function of stope geometry, wall roughness, fill cohesion, and wall closure. Arching effects increased with decreasing stope width, increasing backfill cohesion and frictional resistance, increasing wall roughness and with wall closure.

"The metallurgical performance of the column flotation process is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a model-based automatic control strategy using froth depth and bias measurements obtained from virtual sensors developed at Laval University. Preliminary pilot plant results on two-phase (water– air) and three-phase system (water – minerals – air) will be presented and eventual industrial implementation of such a strategy as well as the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns have been widely studied and used in mineral processing for about twenty years. Although a great deal of work has been accomplished to understand the influence of different variables such as froth depth (H), bubble surface area flux (Sb) and bias (Jb) on the metallurgical performance, the measurement of some of these variables is still difficult to be performed – except at the laboratory level – because in most cases, no commercial device yet exists.As a result of this, it is almost impossible to achieve neither efficient control nor optimization of the process at the industrial level, even in open-loop operation. This paper aims at presenting a simple control strategy of froth depth and bias. Description of the sensors used to achieved measurements, preliminary pilot plant results for froth depth control, eventual industrial applications and possibilities for process optimization are also treated."

A rough simulated borehole has been developed for the installation and dynamic testing of rock bolts a the WASM Dynamic Test Facility. The rough simulated borehole is used for rock bolts that are sensitive to equipment installation technique or borehole geometry (particularly friction rock stabilisers and resin encapsulated bolts). An extensive axial test program has quantified a difference between the static and dynamic capacity (kN/m of embedment) for friction rock stabilisers once sliding starts. The 47mm split tube bolt has a 50% reduction in embedment capacity (but with significant variation) dissipating 2.7kJ/100mm of sliding per meter of embedment, and the Omega (inflatable) bolt had a 70% reduction in embedment capacity dissipating 6.2kJ/100mm of sliding per meter of embedment. The Omega bolt dynamic capacity remainder at least equivalent to the split tube bolt static capacity.

Solid fuel, usually coke or anthracite, is commonly added to ground iron ore fines in the pelletising process to reduce the amount of burner fuel required and the maximum firing temperature, while maintaining pellet strength and the productivity of the pelletising plant. However, the use of coke and coal contribute to the production of greenhouse gases (eg carbon dioxide) and are a source of NOx and SOx emissions. Utilising wood biomass / wood char is one methodology CSIRO Minerals is investigating as an alternative to coke and coal, as it is a renewable energy source that is very reactive, has a low ash content and the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from the iron and steel-making process. Previous work has established that charcoal can effectively replace coke in the sintering process (Lovel et al, 2005), and the following experimental work aims to demonstrate that it can also provide an adequate replacement for coke and coal in the pelletising process. The paper presents the results of an experimental testwork program comparing the behaviour of fired pellets containing traditional solid fuels and charcoal. The physical properties of the pellets are compared in terms of their compressive strength, tumble and abrasion indices and the reduction properties. A qualitative assessment of the pellet microstructures is also presented.

"Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on. Presently the global gold production surpasses any estimated expectations.Present efforts are directed towards showing the evaluation and optimization of the different parameters that govern the performance of the Knelson concentrator, as well as illustrating the difficulties and successes throughout the operating period.In the first year of operation 200 tons of gold concentrate have been produced with an average concentrate grade of 320 gramdton, having paid back in full the cost of the automated KC-XD- 48 Knelson Concentrator, the peripheral equipment, and the cost of the installation."

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10,000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in threes individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream x-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8%, zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.INTRODUCTIONSEcstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's major base metal producers, near the old gold mining centre of Timmins, Ontario. Discovered in 1964, the property was brought into production in November, 1966. Originally designed for 9,000 tons per day, the operation now treats 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types mined from a single open pit. In the near future, open pit ore will be supplemented by ore from an underground operation now being readied for productionAt the Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. The whole plant is highly automated and control is coordinated from a central control room. The treatment process follows conventional practices although fine grinding is required for optimum flotation recoveries. Normally, two circuits treat copper-zinc ore at a combined rate of 6,500 tons per day while the third circuit treats 3,500 tons per day of silver-lead-zinc ore. Special production averages 2,400 tons per day."

"Sandfire’s DeGrussa Copper-Gold operation in West Australia is a new high grade copper sulfide mine, which includes a 1.5 Mtpa concentrator which was completed in 2013.Early after commissioning, it was identified that the flotation capacity in the all-mechanical cleaner circuit was not sufficient. In order to improve recovery, the tail from the cleaner scavenger was sent back to feed the rougher scavengers. Test-work was done on-site to evaluate the possibility of using a flotation column as a pre-cleaner. A CavTube™ sparging system was selected, which is especially effective for fine ore particle flotation. Test-work was conducted at site using a 150 mm diameter unit, and then confirmed on a 500 mm diameter unit. A 4250 mm diameter full scale unit was installed in Q4 2014 and commissioned in Q1 2015. This unit gave some significant advantages including a reduction in re-grinding requirements, elimination of a circulating load and increase in the recovery of copper in the cleaner circuit and overall circuit.In this presentation, the benefits of columns and cavitation sparging for floating fine particles and rejecting fine entrained gangue will be explained. Also, the results from a lab unit and a pilot unit will be compared against the results of the full-scale unit. The paper will demonstrate the scalability of flotation columns, and which phenomena and scale-up criteria must be considered to be successful. Finally, some general observations will be made about the importance of columns in copper cleaning circuits.IntroductionSandfire Resources’ DeGrussa copper-gold concentrator is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of Perth in Western Australia. "In gold processing plants, it is common to start gold cyanidation in the grinding circuit by simple cyanide addition or as a result of recycling residual cyanide. In such cases, advantages such as a decrease in gold lockup and reduced leach time have been noticed. The prevailing conditions in grinding circuits such as intense mixing, particle breakage and friction or high temperature are quite different from those found in tanks and so is the resulting cyanidation behaviour. To gain a better understanding of the cyanidation behaviour in mills and of the pertinence of cyanide addition in grinding circuits, lab tests were conducted using an industrial ore from Canadian Malartic mine. In this study, the effects of different parameters on cyanidation in grinding circuits were examined; parameters such as such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, cyanide concentration and pH. The results showed that the kinetic benefits of high temperature in the mill can overcome the low dissolved oxygen concentration thus leading to an overall gold dissolution kinetics improvement for temperatures up to 50°C. However, gold leach in the studied grinding circuit at lab scale caused an increase in cyanide consumption with a higher generation of iron cyanide and SCN-. These results were confirmed by tests in the Canadian Malartic plant where the cyanide addition was moved from the SAG mill to the leaching tanks resulting in a 20% savings in cyanide consumption.IntroductionCyanidation in grinding circuits can benefit gold processing by decreasing gold lockup and by reducing leach time. However, other aspects regarding gold and cyanicide dissolution come into play in the conditions prevailing in grinding circuits. Indeed, high turbulence, high temperature, recycling load, friction and particle breakage make cyanidation behaviour in grinding circuits different from in-tank cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). In several cases, cyanide in grinding is limited to a very low level or completely avoided such as in circuits with gravimetric separation, for ores requiring oxidative pretreatment or for preg-robbing ores. In other cases, water management imposes a certain recycling of residual cyanide. This problem is generally addressed by a case-by-case approach. However, the chemistry of cyanidation in mill circuits is worth investigating in order to assess the advantages and disadvantages."

A case study for the application of a novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of a narrow steeply dipping, gold-silver mineralized quartz vein deposit is presented. The technique is novel in two respects. First, mineral grades are kriged directly rather via the accumulation method more often applied to vein deposits and, second, a modified 2D ordinary kriging algorithm is used that allows the calculation of a single grade and variance for irregular shaped blocks of varying sizes. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the suitability of this novel geostatistical technique for resource estimation of the Poura mine deposit and, if appropriate, to lay a firm foundation for future geostatistical work at the mine. The reserve estimation concentrated on the remnant ore blocks and pillars in both underground and surface workings. The data, which was collected in 2D coordinates with grade and vein thickness values, was first analyzed statistically and used to compute experimental semi-variograms. Appropriate semi- variogram models were fitted and various aspects of the estimation technique were evaluated using cross-validation error analysis, with acceptable results. A block kriging computer program called Krige2D was developed to implement the modified 2D kriging algorithm and calculations. Production data were not available to evaluate the computed block resources, but they were compared with a previous resource data determined using an arithmetic approach. The geostatistical technique estimated slightly higher grades but lower overall tonnages as compared to the earlier arithmetic estimates.
