Based on the characteristics of overburden rock strata movement, surface ground subsidence and casing deformation and failure, a tension-shear combination failure model of surface borehole was set up. The main controlling factors of the mining-induced deformation and failure of surface borehole were researched with this failure model and the limit analysis method. The mining methods and geology conditions mechanics action mechanism to surface borehole and its time ?space evaluation rule was found. The surface borehole deformation and fracture rule were advanced. It provides theoretical support to optimizing layout, structure type, security measure and local casing protection of surface borehole.

Surf Point and Edye Pass mines are on the northwestern part of Porcher island; 25 miles southwest of Prince Rupert. During the 1930's they produced about $750; 000 in gold from ore averaging better than one-half ounce a ton. The deposits are quartz veins; containing auriferous pyrite; concentrates average about 8 oz. gold a ton. The veins occur in a quartz diorite; stock. Their distribution shows an apparent control by primary flow structures; for the principal deposits lie on the axis of an arch of flow layers. The technique used in mapping the structures in the intrusive is that known as the Cloos method and described by Balk.

This paper describes the development of an infra-red ore dryer at the Mines Branch. The dryer utilizes an infra-red heat source mounted over a stainless-steel belt to dry ores and concentrates of varying particle size and moisture content. It has been found to ?be successful in meeting Mines Branch requirements of minimum dusting loss and ease of cleaning to decrease ,contamination between various batches of dried products. It is described with the hope that it might .prove useful in other laboratories where there are similar problems. It might have an application in the drying of concentrates containing high values where dust losses would result in a considerable loss of revenue; also for small batches of material or an intermittent drying problem.

Cigar Lake is one of the world’s largest high-grade uranium mines. The ore mined at Cigar Lake is milled at Orano Canada Inc’s (Orano) McClean Lake mill. The average Cigar Lake ore uranium grade since the start of mining activities in 2014 is 17.8% U (range 8– 28%). To achieve budgeted production of 18 M lbs U3O8/yr the required average feed tonnage to the mill is about 45 kt/yr. Arsenic, occurring as arsenides and sulpharsenides, is one of the major elements of concern associated with Cigar Lake ore. The leaching process is a sulphuric acid leach under oxidizing conditions at near atmospheric pressure. The presence of arsenic in the ore consumes oxidant in leaching as well as ferric sulphate in tailings preparation for arsenic sequestration. The average arsenic grade since the start of mining at Cigar Lake is 0.57% As. Further, the ore is hosted in a matrix of sandstone and clay, which results in poor settling in CCD. The average uranium grade for the balance of Cigar Lake Phase 1 ore is expected to drop to 12.5% U and the average arsenic grade is expected to increase to 1.6 % As, with an annual average peak of 2.5%. Therefore the tonnage throughput required to sustainably meet the production target will increase to 55 kt per year. Orano partnered with Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) to perform a gap analysis study to identify key circuits and equipment in the mill that would require debottlenecking. A METSIM mass balance model of the McClean Lake mill was generated and validated with actual mill operating data. Various feed scenarios were then studied, and the outcome was a traffic light table, which highlighted feed scenarios that exceeded installed capacity of major equipment and circuits. The results provided the basis for the PDC for the pre-feasibility study. This paper will outline the results of the gap analysis, the mass balance model, the feed scenarios and the study undertaken to prepare the McClean Lake mill for the change in ore quality from Cigar Lake.

Air is the gaseous substance that envelopes the earth and forms its atmosphere. It is remarkable in the constancy of its composition; for while this is being continually changed as the result of the respiration of men and animals, and by addition of gases arising from organic changes and the products of combustion, it is ever being brought back to normal and the proper balance restored by the processes of plant and vegetable life. Nature sees to it that the air in which we live and breathe is kept purified. This does not apply to the air in a coal mine, where there are no natural forces to change and make use of the different gases formed or evolved, and where mechanical ventilation is the only effective means of keeping the air pure. The atmosphere consists of oxygen and nitrogen, not in the combined state but merely mixed. By volume, the composition is: oxygen, 21 percent, nitrogen, 79 percent, there being included with the latter small quantities of such substances as water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitric acid, ammonia, ozone, argon, neon, and organic gases. Of the two principal gases which form air, oxygen alone supports life. When air is inhaled into the lungs the oxygen is absorbed by the blood, which carries it through the body to nourish and energize it. Exhaled air consists of water vapour and about 4 per cent carbon dioxide, with from 16 1/2 to 17 per cent oxygen and 79 per cent nitrogen; the oxygen alone having been drawn on to any considerable extent.

"The Apex Mine is currently scheduled to be brought back into production by Hecla in the first quarter of1990. Its projected productivity rate will be exceptionally high for a small underhand cut and fill mine.The ore mined at the Apex Mine occurs within a pipe-like structure as a series of iron oxides containing both gallium and germanium, plus significant amounts of silver, zinc, lead, and copper.Ground conditions in and around the ore zone have dictated that unique approaches be utilized. To date, these have included a prototype 0.5 cu. yd diesel LHD, and the use of fibrous shotcrete in 4ft by 7ft headings, and the first pneumatically-placed cemented backfill in North America. Above all else, it is the combination of new technologies with a small and dedicated workforce which has allowed for the successful development of this ore body.IntroductionThe Apex Mine is an example of the typical small underground project. It has high grade, but low tonnage and is deposited in poor ground. In such cases, conventional planning and thinking generally results in an uneconomical evaluation and negative production decision. Fortunately, some unconventional thinking was allowed to take place during the planning and evolution of the Apex Mine development. The result now serves as an example of how such unconventional thinking can lead to the type of innovations described below.The job necessitated the development and use of new equipment and materials to execute a highly flexible underhand cut and fill mine design/pneumatic backfill concept, that must be constantly modified as different than assumed conditions become evident in and around the ore zone."

The PQ Deeps (PQD) is a production zone located at Newmont’s Musselwhite Mine in northern Ontario. Development started for the PQD in late 2017, and the first stopes were mined starting in early 2021. Unlike most historic longitudinal stoping of narrower orebodies at Musselwhite, the PQD is a wider orebody following the plunge of a fold hinge and is extracted primarily by transverse stoping. Some geotechnical challenges were experienced during early stoping efforts, necessitating design changes throughout late 2021 and early 2022 to optimize the stope design. This work describes the mining methods and design changes to transverse PQD stoping based on geotechnical lessons learned during early stoping efforts.

In the decade 2002 to 2012 some 6.7 million tonnes of new copper concentrate production capacity was brought on line, corresponding to 2 million tonnes of contained copper. This increase in concentrate supply necessitated the commissioning of a number of new copper smelters as well as the modernization and/or expansion of existing plants to meet the demand. This paper gives an overview of the copper extractive industry, reviews recent copper production trends and changes in the copper industry, including an examination of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical technology developments. WorleyParsons has supported a number of the projects involved in these developments and this role is briefly discussed. The paper introduces a number of ideas related to possible future directions of the copper industry.

The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). A thermodynamic description of the equilibrium in liquid and gas phases under specific conditions of refractory gold pressure oxidation was generated using the HKF theory. The gold behavior was considered at 190-225°C in the presence of 1-100 mg/L of chloride ion, and under oxidationreduction potential (ORP) of +700 to +1030 mV. The calculations show that the predominant form of gold(I) occurrence is [AuOH]° compared to [AuCl2]?. High ORP favors the formation of [AuCl4]? as a predominant form of gold(III). It is noted that this complex is responsible for the gold losses buildup during POX. Laboratory test results for double refractory concentrate POX are shown. The combined negative effect of (i) organic carbon of the concentrate and (ii) dissolved chlorides in POX slurry on gold recovery is demonstrated. The effects of carbonate blending to the POX feed concentrate and incomplete oxidation of sulfides on POX performance were studied. The pilot tests results of continuous pressure oxidation are also shown and generally confirm the laboratory results and theoretic dependencies. A comparison of the experimental data with the results of thermodynamic calculations is made. As a result of current research, an effective process for POX treatment of carbonaceous sulfide concentrates in the presence of chlorides was developed.

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Murrin Murrin Operations has not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues many of which are the result of design decisions have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. The decision to install, the installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedw ell dilution system are discussed in this paper. The installation was justified on improved operational robustness and an increase in the in the underflow density of 1% (per cent w/w). At approximately the same time process modifications in the solution neutralisation circuit were implemented and these changes altered the rheology of the slurry reporting to CCD1. Since the modifications to CCD1 and the solution neutralisation circuit, the CCD circuit has averaged a 2% improvement in the circuit underflow density. The CCD1 modification was completed on time and mechanically has performed well. From a risk point of view, the central rake-lift and Turbodil® dilution system add a degree of freedom and robustness to CCD1 operation that has extended the range of operational confidence. In this respect, the modification has been a success and is complementary to solution neutralisation improvements.

The study of leached outcrops as an aid in determining the character of mineralization beneath the surface is in its infancy. Practically all the work on this subject up to the present has been applied to the 'porphyry' copper deposits of the southwestern United States. Some work has been done also on the zinc-lead solid sulphide deposits of the western United States. The question has been asked, "Can this study be applied, and would it have any practical application, in northern Manitoba?" When one realizes the size of the unprospected territory in this Province and the consequent need for a cheap and rapid method of interpreting the countless outcrops which occur in order to discriminate between valueless iron sulphides and valuable sulphides of the base metals, it is readily seen that the study is of great value if it can be applied with a reasonable degree of surety. Augustus Locke, well known economic geologist of the southwestern United States and a pioneer in the study of leached outcrops of disseminated copper ore, has written much on the subject. Messrs. Blanchard and Boswell in a series of articles have dealt with the leached outcrops derived from lead and zinc sulphides in the western United States. Since this paper is essentially a comparison between the leached outcrops of the southwestern United States and those of northern Manitoba with the purpose of testing the adaptability of the study in this Province, an outline of the criteria used in the southwest will be of value to the reader.

One of the greatest threats of mining in hard coal mines are underground fires, which in the past often resulted in the mining disasters. Implementation of scientific principles of fire fighting into practice contributed to a significant reduction of fire hazard in coal mines. However, despite numerous achievements of science in the fight against the underground fires, they still occur creating a potential hazard for the miners and contributing to generate significant costs of fire-fighting operations, the temporary suspension of production or loss of longwalls. This concerns both spontaneous fires and exogenous ones. A significant decrease in the number of spontaneous fires was the result of cooperation between Polish scientists with experts in the field of new methods of fire hazard prediction and selection of new fire prevention and fire hazard monitoring methods. A significant part played here researchers from the Central Mining Institute. The original method of endogenous fire risk assessment based on calorimetric tests of coal and developed mathematical model of the process of coal self-heating allow to predict the risk of spontaneous fires and select proper fire prevention measures adequate to the involved risk. The frequency of exogenous fires is in the last few years is low, but their share in the total number of fires is relatively high and constitutes about 30%. This results from the prevention activities, carried out regularly in mines which are aimed at reducing the fire hazard connected with the use of fire-resistant conveyor belts and other non-metallic materials. Further directions to reduce the hazards connected with underground fires should focus on improving the methods for monitoring hazards together with automation of fire fighting operations.

The bioleaching of fine low grade copper sulfide ore is described. A sample of ground (> 1 mm) copper ore from Sarcheshmeh, Iran, was subjected to a series of agglomeration procedures and subsequently leached. The best agglomerate was obtained by using lime and sulfuric acid as binders. A column bioleaching test of agglomerated ore was then run for 105 days along with a non-inoculated control column having thymol as bactericide. The results show that about 77.5% of copper was extracted in the bioleaching, whereas the control column achieved only 57% copper leaching.

"The Hollinger gold mine is in the Porcupine area, Cochrane district, in northern Ontario. The adjacent town of Timmins, which has a population of 25,856, lies 490 miles by railway north of the city of Toronto.The property was staked in the late summer of 1909. The original four claims were staked by Benjamin Hollinger, after whom the mine was named. Development commenced in the autumn of 1909 and mill construction in the winter of 1910. A catastrophic forest fire swept the district in 19ll, destroying the surface plant, so that the original 300-ton mill was not completed until June 1912. From that date up to December 31, 1945, 44,280,750 tons of ore have yielded 13,636,796 oz. gold and 2,613,354 oz. silver. The total value of the production has been $363,638,315.0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies consist of quartz veins, stringer lodes, and scockworks, with associated pyritized wall-rocks. The width of individual orebodies, as exposed by mining operations, ranges from 1 to 70 feet and averaged approximately 10 feet in 1942. The vein system forms a complex pattern in a favourable zone, which in places is 6,000 feet long and 4,000 feet wide. The deepest level being developed is 5,150 feet below the surface. Few veins are persistent for long distances, although some are continuous for more than 1,000 feet longitudinally and vertically.The host rocks consist of a closely folded series of Precambrian lava flows of Keewatin age. These are schistose and hydrothermally altered, but are believed to have originally been of intermediate to basic composition. The schistosity strikes N.70°E. and dips to the south at 75° to 80°. The structure of the formations is complex, but in the principal ore-bearing zone the general dip of the flows is to the south at a slightly flatter attitude than the schistosity."

The solubilities and distributions of molybdenum and iridium in iron silicate slag and copper-iron mattes were studied using an equilibration-quenching technique and subsequent direct phase composition analyses by EPMA (Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry). The equilibrations were carried out on a wide matte grade interval, ranging from 55 wt-% Cu to 75 wt-% Cu, in pSO2 = 0.1 atm at 1300°C. The results in equilibrium with a solid iridium-molybdenum alloy indicated an iridium solubility of 150–500 ppmw in the sulphide matte, depending on the matte grade, and a molybdenum solubility of 100–600 ppmw. Iridium was distributing predominantly in the sulphide matte with the distribution coefficient of 10+3 - +4 but molybdenum deported predominantly in the slag with Lm/s(Mo) = 0.02–0.1. The effects of alumina and lime additions in the smelting slag were also examined. INTRODUCTION Iridium is a highly siderophile element (HSE), which means that it is incompatible with the sulphide forming elements and possesses a small solubility in mattes, such as copper- and nickel-iron sulphide melts. Molybdenum behaves only modestly in that way (Walker & Li, 2008; Righter et al., 2017). They both are known to be trace elements accompanying copper and nickel sulphide ores. No solubility data, however, are available for them in copper-rich sulphide mattes. Geochemical data on the behaviour of Ir and Mo deal mostly with low-iron silicate systems, e.g. basaltic melts, and high-sulphur sulphide solutions and mattes (Ertel et al., 2008; Fonseca et al., 2007). They also indicate that Ir and Mo dissolve in silicate melts primarily as oxides and not as electrically neutral metal species. Most geological data of iridium focus on high-sulphur systems of the monosulphide composition and typically Fe-Ni mattes where copper is a trace element (Fleet et al., 1996; Sattari et al., 2002). Direct solubility measurements for mattes and iron-lean silicates have also been made using pure Ir or an Ir alloy as the saturation phase (Borisov & Palme, 2000; O’Neill & Eggins, 2002; Makovicky & Karup-Møller, 1999; Ertel et al., 2008; Mungall & Brenan, 2014). A recent summary about the solubilities of HSE’s in iron- and sulphur free silicates is available in Laurenz (2012). The thermodynamics of molybdenum partitioning between oxides and Fe-S-O melts was studied by Mengason et al. (2011). Their results indicate strong accumulation in the iron-rich sulphide in reducing conditions (pO2 = 10-9.6 atm in Ni-NiO equilibrium at 1050°C). Molybdenum dissolves in iron-lean silicate melts as MoO3 species in oxygen pressures above the Fe-FeO equilibrium and as MoO2 in more reducing conditions (Farges et al., 2006; Righter et al., 2017).

In this study, the effect of silicon on the microstructure, mechanical properties and hot tearing susceptibility of permanent mould cast AZ91E magnesium alloy was investigated. Varying amounts of silicon (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt.%) were added to AZ91E in the form of an Al-53 wt.% Si master alloy. The phase formation, grain size and solidification behavior of each alloy were characterized and related to their tensile properties and hot tearing susceptibility. The results showed that the addition of silicon resulted in the formation of Mg2Si particles. The presence of these particles led to an increase of the hardness, but was detrimental to the tensile strength and elongation of AZ91E. However, silicon significantly reduced the hot tearing susceptibility of AZ91E. This was attributed to the reduction of the grain size and the decreased freezing range of AZ91E, which contributed to improve the interdendritic feeding during the last stage of solidification.
