"The Eagle East project, accessed from the existing and operating Eagle Mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is an underground base metal project currently in execution by Lundin. This paper will provide an update on several aspects of ventilation including use of a twin-decline access, innovative airflow crossover arrangement and construction ventilation methodology. Integration into existing mine ventilation systems including construction methodology will also be covered. Performance benchmarks and lessons learned are discussed across these topics.INTRODUCTIONLundin has owned and operated the Eagle Mine since 2013. This hard rock underground mine is located in the upper peninsula of Michigan, USA. High-grade nickel ore is mined using sublevel open stoping mining methods and trucked to surface via haul ramp. The mine, having been in production for four years, is nearing the completion of the initial orebody. A satellite orebody 2,000 meters East of the current workings and approximately 900 meters below surface, was identified that could extend operations until 2023. In 2016, Lundin approved the Eagle East project and construction began in 2017 (Lundin Mining Corporation, 2017).Due to proximity to the existing mine, Eagle East will be both accessed and serviced from the existing Eagle Mine. Ventilation at the Eagle Mine uses two fresh air intakes with direct fired combustion heaters; one at the mine portal feeding fresh air into the ramp and one at a fresh air raise located near the Eagle deposit. The primary ventilation circuit is powered on the exhaust air side, with two 700 hp exhaust fans located at a single return air raise. Underground, fresh air is distributed through the main access decline and fresh air raise (FAR) to the production levels and controlled with mechanical regulators on the exhaust side. The exhaust air is collected through return air raises with a collector/transfer drift on 250 Level and then to the surface through a return air raise (RAR)."

"Many of the rare earth elements, the lanthanide series on the periodic table, are on the U.S. Department of Defense Strategic and Critical Materials list. In this regard, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) has funded several projects at Montana Tech focusing on rare earth element recovery from natural resources. Current froth flotation operations utilize octyl hydroxamate for rare earth mineral extraction, however recovery is not ideal and flotation performance can be improved. Salicylhydroxamic acid (C7H7NO3) was identified as a novel collector due to similarities with n-octyl hydroxamate, notably the amine head group. Salicylhydroxamic acid is primarily used in the medical industry but due to the amine head group is ideally suited as a collector for rare earth mineral flotation.Parametric studies were performed for the flotation of rare earth minerals by modifying a wide range of variables. Mechanical variables of a 6L bench scale flotation cell, such as air inlet flow, rotor speed, and milling time for liberation were modified to elucidate energy input parameters for the desired minerals. Chemical parameters such as collector concentration and pH were varied to understand solution chemistry considerations of the salicylhydroxamic-rare earth mineral system. The study obtained a statistically significant experimental model for the flotation of rare earth minerals. A two stage compartmental model was also utilized for the determination of the first order flotation rate constants for each mineral. Optimized recovery of rare earth minerals was found to occur at near neutral pH ranges using salicylhydroxamic acid with maximum recoveries approaching ideal industrial standards although rare earth mineral grades were still not sufficient.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) are found in minerals that contain several REE which makes costeffective separation of the rare earths difficult. Significant scientific challenges have hindered mineral separation. The molecular similarity of rare earth elements results in minerals containing several REEs, such as bastnaesite [(Ce, La) CO3F]. This prevents efficient separation during concentration steps, for instance flotation, and has a direct impact on successive metallurgical processes. Consequently, concentration during flotation is of rare earth minerals (REM) as opposed to REE."

Roadway development rates in Australian underground coal mines are failing to keep pace with modern longwall systems and are unlikely to sustain further improvements in longwall productivity into the future unless step change improvements to roadway development equipment and practices are made. Bottlenecks which limit and constrain improved production and impact the safety of operators have been identified through a series of industry surveys, with the manual installation of strata support materials, consumables delivery, coal haulage and monorail installation being highlighted as major areas to improve development performance. This paper looks at research being carried out at the University of Wollongong in designing an integrated system approach for the fully automated handling and installing of development consumables, and the systems required to support these activities. A series of hard automation manipulation devices have been demonstrated in surface trials and the results indicate that rapid roadway development can be achieved.

For the purpose of reservoir-performance calculations a balance can be made between the materials with-in the reservoir and the production from the reservoir. The material balance equation, a relationship which holds under or near equilibrium conditions, has been used in many forms by the Petroleum Engineer for the determination of initial oil-in-place in the reservoir and the calculation of performance into the future. One of the more recent methods developed by Tracy, utilizes a modified form of the Schilthuis material balance. In the latter case, values of incremental production are assumed for a particular pressure drop, a value of the gas-oil ratio found and a check of this estimate made by calculation"' the initial oil-in-place. Insights into uranium mining projects of the future can be gained by a careful statistical analysis of past and present deposits, as well as an examination of recent trends for uranium resource evaluation and primary uranium production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provides the necessary data and corresponding mechanisms as inputs for methodologies that enable strategic and scientific evaluations of long-term security of supply uranium required to sustain the demand for nuclear fuel. Sustainability of the uranium mining industry and subsequently new uranium mines of the future requires innovation and expertise to lower operating costs, maintain or improve uranium recovery while meeting the requirements of stakeholders in regard to protection of the environment and safety of the workers and general public.

Based on the commercial steel 42CrMo (4140, SCM440), a new generation of CrMo steel was developed by increasing the content of Mo, adding the alloy element of V and Nb, and decreasing the content of P and S. This new CrMo steel has higher strength of 1500MPa and better delayed failure property. TEM and EDS were used to study the distribution and function of the alloying elements in this steel. A new EELS technique was developed to study the bonding strength of the grain boundary in the steel. The mechanism of strengthening of the new steel has been studied.

This work addresses the need of new refractories for copper converters. Technological improvements and environmental regulations for chromium containing refractories have generated this need. Chemical interactions, mechanism of penetration and the effect of oxygen potential and temperature in the system Cu2S-FeS-SiO2-O2 are presented for two refractories: a burned magnesite chrome brick (typically used by the copper industry) and a chrome-free spinel direct bonded brick. The main difference determined in the refractory performance was the blister copper penetration resistance; burned magnesite chrome brick is penetrated while direct bonded brick is not. These results are very promising since blister copper penetration has been reported as the major cause of refractory wear. The results are explained in terms of refractory porosity and wetting characteristics.

"Oil has been discovered off Newfoundland in a number of locations on the Grand Banks, the most notable and exciting being in 1979 when Hibernia was discovered. This discovery has brought new challenges to the province as well as to all of Canada. During the seven years"" since its discovery, both industry and governments have attempted to define its parameters and to find the most efficient and economical way to develop the field.A number of studies have been completed during the interval and in 1985, Mobil Canada Ltd. and partners stated that they would prefer to develop the field by using a concrete Gravity-Based Structure (GBS). IntroductionHibernia is located in an environmental climate much more severe than that of any previously developed oil field. The wind and wave conditions are similar to those of the North Sea, but unlike the North Sea, any structure on the Grand Banks would have to contend with ice floes and icebergs. Decisions had to be made on whether fixed structures could be put in place that would withstand the pressures of the ice and the impact of an iceberg, or whether structures that could be removed when such impacts were imminent would be used.Early studies in 1981, determined that it was possible to build a concrete Gravity-Based Structure which could withstand the impact of the largest icebergs that are anticipated to float in that area of the banks.Additional studies increased the knowledge of icebergs: their patterns and size, and verified the original conclusions that Concrete Gravity-Based platforms would provide a practical solution."

"The better the information on the rock mass and its fracture system, the better is the basis for any rock mechanical decision that is required during the excavation process. While in conventional tunnelling free view to the tunnel face is available, possibilities are limited for mechanised tunnelling using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). An approach, already formulated in 2005, is used that produces digital photographs through openings in the cutting wheel of a TBM and merges them into a circular three-dimensional image. The 3D image is then used for geometric rock mass characterisation purposes including geological mapping, for example to measure spatial orientations or determine joint spacing. In the paper the basic concept is described together with first results from a pilot test.INTRODUCTIONA three-dimensional image unites digital photographs with spatial information on the objects/surfaces it shows. Since they combine geometric and visual information they are a straightforward source for geometric rock mass analysis and geological mapping. Their obvious benefits among others are: (i) they allow spatial measurements even in inaccessible regions, (ii) they provide objective and reproducible records of the rock mass conditions, and (iii) they increase working safety (Gaich et al. 2004).Pre-requisite for the generation of 3D images is the acquisition of at least two photographs from the region of interest. From the photographs the imaged object surfaces are reconstructed by means of image analysis using methods from photogrammetry (Slama, 1980) and computer vision (Hartley & Zisserman, 2001). Possibly the most complex fatigue problem associated with the development of the axial-flow 'gas turbine is discussed in its broader aspects from the metallurgical viewpoint. Reference is made to nodal patterns, interference diagrams, etc. The use of such data in analysis of a turbine :blade failure is illustrated. Special attention is given to the influence of some metallurgical variables affecting fatigue strength and, in particular, heat treatment is shown to have a pronounced effect on .the relative fatigue and creep strength properties of a nickel-chromium-cobalt base alloy suitable for turbine blade applications.

Introductory The Alberta Provincial Government has contemplated a revision of the Mines Act for some time past, and it is understood that a definite decision has now been made to do this at the next session of the Legislature. The Operators' and Miners' organizations of the Province have been asked, or at least have been given the opportunity, to submit their views and ideas relative to the proposed changes. The operators have already drafted out a number of changes which they feel would improve the Act from the standpoint of safety and practicability, and this paper has been prepared so that the general membership of the Rocky Mountain Branch of the Institute, which is composed largely of the operating and certificated officials of the mines, might have an opportunity to discuss, criticize, and improve upon the suggested changes which the operators are putting forward.

"The successful commissioning and ramp up of the Albion Process™ at the GPM Gold Project relied on the successful scaling up of the process from batch and continuous pilot plant campaigns (Voigt et al., 2015). Critical information about reaction kinetics and residence time, grind size and pulp density were determined at the laboratory scale and successfully applied to the commercial scale. A limitation of small scale testwork, is that some parameters cannot be measured reliably and scaling up is a function of the physical size of the equipment which isn’t possible to test with laboratory scale equipment. Oxygen mass transfer rate is one such parameter since this is a complex interaction of many factors including slurry temperature, solution and slurry chemistry, slurry viscosity, agitator type, dimensions and power, oxygen bubble residence time, oxygen purity, tank geometry and oxygen injection technique. Oxygen generation represents an important operating cost for the Albion Process™. Pivotal to the Albion Process™ operating economically at atmospheric pressure is the capability to efficiently transfer oxygen while utilising as much oxygen injected to the process as possible. To respond to this Glencore Technology developed the HyperSpargeTM supersonic gas injector. This paper compares the HyperSparge™ against other sparging techniques to quantify the benefits of oxygen injection via a supersonic gas jet on scale up of the oxygen mass transfer system. The paper then examines plant survey data from the GPM Gold Project to demonstrate the very high oxygen utilisation that can be achieved with a correctly designed oxygen mass transfer system.INTRODUCTION One of the main challenges in chemical reactor design is the scale-up of processes from the laboratory to industrial scale. Processes which cannot be faithfully simulated with an experiment at the laboratory scale face challenges due to the physical dimensions and complexity of full scale operation. One example of this is the design of oxygen mass transfer systems in atmospheric oxidative leaching circuits such as the Albion Process™. A number of constraints associated with the use of laboratory scale equipment to design full scale circuits are involved in gas mass transfer processes in agitated slurries such as the Albion Process. Chiefly, typical laboratory and pilot size equipment lacks the required volume to provide useful design data without relying on empirical correlations: the specific agitator power input is artificially high, the bubble residence time in the vessel is artificially low, the oxygen partial pressure at the base of the vessel is artificially low and the oxygen delivery method may differ significantly to the industrial process. Further, the dynamic nature of the process introduces additional impacts on gas mass transfer, including the presence of solids, recycle streams and minor elements, plus the variances within the reality of a process plant such as disruptions or variance of feed quality."

Control of the quenching capacity of the cooling water is of primary importance for maintaining the quality and recovery rate of ingots produced by direct chill casting. Industrially, this can be done using a cylindrical metallic probe undergoing rapid quenching by direct immersion in a reservoir filled with casting water. Such a test rig originally developed at Alcan Arvida Research and development Centre was modified and used to assess the role of key parameters affecting the boiling heat transfer. During the tests, the probe of the instrument undergoes the effects of different heat transfer mechanisms. An experimental study was performed in order to clarify the details of the probe-water heat transfer during rapid quenching. The heat flux along the surface was determined by mathematical modeling using the measured temperature signals, while the corresponding heat transfer regimes like stable and unstable film boiling, nucleate boiling and natural convection were identified by the analysis of high-speed video recordings. The application of rock bolts for the stabilisation of underground openings needs a good understanding of the response of the bolts during rock excavation. The pull-and-shear performance of two types of rock bolts—that is, the fully encapsulated rebar and the D-Bolt—has been studied both experimentally and numerically. The rock bolts were tested under a pull-and-shear load at five displacing angles (i.e., 0°, 20°, 40°, 60°, and 90°), and at the same time, the strains on the bolts were monitored during testing. The two types of rock bolts have similar loading capacities, while the loading angle has obvious influence on the deformation capacity of the D-Bolt. The ultimate total displacement of the D-Bolt decreases from 140 mm under pure pull loading to 70 mm under shearing. The displacement capacity of the rebar is not significantly influenced by the loading angle but remains at a quite low level from 29 to 53 mm. The D-Bolt yielded in a longer section the rebar bolt under pure shear. A trilinear material model was used to simulate the strain hardening behaviour of the bolt steels in the numerical code FLAC3D. The numerical results show that the axial load in the bolt decreases exponentially with the distance from the loading position for the rebar bolts, but it remains constant in the bolt sections between the anchor positions for the D-Bolts. When the bolt is subjected to a lateral load, shear stresses are created on the D-Bolt surface within a short distance from the loading position.

"PREFACEAt the CIM Annual General Meeting in Quebec City, R.E. Pike of The Toronto-Dominion Bank described how the Canadian banking industry worked with the minerals industry to assemble the large capital requirements for resource projects in Canada and overseas. He developed a profile of the mining industry and Canadian banking, both being important sectors of the Canadian economy and global in context. He also outlined the banking and financing partnership that existed in the past. In looking to the future and challenge that lies ahead f or each industry, Mr. Pike questioned whether the financing practices of the 1970s will be acceptable over the next decade. In that regard, he highlighted the risks that impact on each industry and illustrated how that financing partnership might evolve in response to those forces. The folio wing is a synopsis of his paper.IntroductionThe Canadian mining and metals industry is prominent in the domestic economy and respected internationally. Any measure of its performance illustrates that status-percentage of GNP, employment, exports, capital investment, size relative to other producing nations, etc.Energy, Mines and Resources Canada has forecast that the non-fuel minerals industry will grow in real terms by an average annual rate of 3.0% over the period 1981 to 1991. Using the GNP as reference, that growth in non-fuel mineral production will represent 7.7% of GNP. In translating that growth to capital expenditure, the EMR Canada estimates the aggregate amount at $43.8 billion ('79 dollars) or approximately 12% of total business investment in Canada during the 10-year period.About half of the $43.8 billion will be devoted to the ferrous sector-$8.4 billion in iron ore mining and $12.4 billion in the steel industry. Capital investment in nonferrous s projects is estimated at $13.3 billion, and it is projected at $6.7 billion for industrial minerals. The residual $3.0 .billion is exploration spending."

"This paper presents the result of the research done on the effect of temperature on the dilatancy of rocks from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC), where the South African Platinum mines are located. The BIC has higher virgin rock temperature (VRT) than the gold mines of the ‘Witwatersrand Basin Complex’. If the platinum mines advance to ultra-deep levels as the gold mines, since the Merensky Reef has been reported to extend beyond 5km, then the virgin rock temperature at 5 km below surface would be approximately 140oC. Hence, there is a need for the investigation of rock behaviour at high temperatures. Five different rock types (norite, leuconorite, mottled anorthosite, pyroxenite and chromitite) were tested in a 2600 kN servo-controlled multi-purpose triaxial testing machine. The tests were done at a constant strain rate of 5 x 10-1 S-1 and a confining pressure of 10 MPa within temperature range of 20 °C (ambient temperature) to 140 °C. The results show a general strength reduction and increasing dilation angles with increasing temperatures. The results also demonstrate that dilation angle is close to the internal friction angle at lower temperatures; however, they are greater at higher temperatures.INTRODUCTIONMany challenges are faced with increasing depth of mining in underground mines. The most obvious are heat, in-situ stresses and those associated with logistics. Issues related to underground heat have mainly focused on the side effect of heat on workers' health, increasing production costs as a result of higher cost of ventilation. The effect of increasing temperature with increasing depth on the behavior of rock has not been given much consideration. Generally, gold mines in South Africa are deeper than the platinum mines but the latter have higher temperature gradient, which makes the platinum mines to be warmer at similar mining depths. Although the study of the effect temperature on the behaviour of rock can be beneficial to both gold and platinum mines, the focus of the research is limited to the platinum mines because of their higher temperature gradient. Donoghue (2004) stated that the virgin rock temperatures (VRT) and air temperatures increase with depth, due to the geothermal gradient and auto-compression, that is, compression of air by its own weight."

"Most of the lode and placer gold production in the Canadian Cordillera has been derived from mines and placers in the Intermontane and Omineca belts. Gold has been produced from rocks of Precambrian to Eocene age, but the preferred host environment contains Upper Paleozoic to Upper Jurassic eugeosynclinal or arc-type sedimentary and volcanic rocks adjacent to plutonic complexes which have a wide variety in both size and composition. Auriferous quartz lodes occur in fissures and shear zones which are commonly subsidiary to strong fault zones. In common with most vein-type deposits, structural complexities are an essential part of the mine environment.Gold production from the Canadian Cordillera to the end of 1978 totals 35.0 million ounces, of which 47 per cent has been produced from placer mining, principally in the Klondike and Cariboo districts. The balance has been derived from lode gold (80 per cent) and base metal (20 per cent) mines.Gold reserves in producing mines and deposits committed for production as of January 1, 1978 were 87.4 tons, or 21.6 per cent of total Canadian gold reserves contained in all types of deposits. Although more than 100 lode mines have operated in the Canadian Cordillera since the turn of the last century, over 75 per cent of the lode gold produced by 1978 was recovered from five mining camps, namely the Rossland, Hedley, Bridge River, Premier and Barkerville.The average grade of the principal producers in these camps was about 0.45 ounce of gold per ton. Individual camps yielded from 3 to 8 million tons during their operating lives, which varied from 28 to 43 years. The last of these mines ceased operating in 1971.Most of the total lode gold production has been derived from quartz veins, frequently with associated carbonate and ankerite, occupying fractured and faulted zones in Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks closely associated with a variety of intrusions. A review of the literature suggests that several deposits may have evolved by remobilization of ore constituents from earlier concordant gold-bearing formations. The principal metallic minerals in the deposits are native gold, electrum, tellurides, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite.As the mineralogy suggests, many of the Cordilleran lode gold deposits have yielded important co-products or byproducts, including silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and tungsten. Significant by-product gold production has also been derived from porphyry copper, volcanogenic, replacement and pyrometasomatic deposits, particularly in recent years.No major lode gold discovery has been made in the past 67 years, although little exploration activity for gold has taken place during the last 30 years. Several relatively small lode gold and gold replacement deposits have been discovered in recent years, either serendipitously (Chappelle) or on very low initial budgets (Northair and Carolin). Based on well-established precedents, one or more of these may eventually be developed into a large mine.A detailed study of the Canadian Cordillera gold deposits based on recent genetic models could prove rewarding, not only in up-dating information on their origin and depositional characteristics, but in stimulating the search for undiscovered gold deposits, in the Cordillera and other parts of Canada."

"This paper briefly outlines the characteristics which should be considered in assessing the economics of mineral exploration, and illustrates such an assessment by using data from the Canadian base metal sector. Implications for the sector are found to include the following:(1) base metal exploration has the potential to create a substantial amount of new wealth;(2) investment incentive for exploration under current conditions is not unattractive over-all;(3) because of existing taxation policies, there is much more incentive for large companies to explore than for smaller enterprises;(4) succesful exploration is sensitive to the size, financial resources and organizational structure of the exploration entity;(5) the general level of recent exploration expenditures should be adequate to maintain the current rate of production and perhaps to support very modest growth; and(6) there is an important opportunity for growth in the sector.The findings of the study suggest that government policies should be made more flexible, in order to take into account the risks associated with exploration and with price fluctuations in the base metal sector. Recommendations are also made concerning improvements in provincial regulations for disclosure of exploration information."

Des quartzites très pars ont été dêcouverts au cours de la cartographie de la region du lac des Martres, étape de l'étude géologique de la region de Charlevoix. On distingue quatre groupes métasédimentaires, tons con tenant des niveaux de quartzite dans an moins deux domaines géologiques différents, c'est à l'ouest, clans le domaine gneisso-charnockitique que se situent les quartzites du groupe des Martres. Quartzite et gneiss à grenat et sillimanite, en banes épais, constituent la formation de La Galette. A Pest, dans un environnement gneisso-granitique, les deux groupes métasédimentaires de Saint-Siméon, et de La Malbaie comprennent, par contraste, des bancs pen épais et de compositions variées. Les niveaux de quartzite dépassent rarement 50 m d'épaisseur. L'autre groupe metasédimentaire, celui de Saint-Tite des Caps, recoupé de nombreuses intrusions charnockitiques et granitiques, ne possède que de minces niveaux de quartzite. La pureté et la grande épaisseur des quartzites de La Galette suppose une histoire complexe qui se termine par des depots continentaux de climat aride, par opposition aux depots marins des autres groupes. D'autre part, la presence de ces quartzites an sein de roches Presque anhy¬dres et de haute temperature que sont les charnockites leur confère des caractéristiques de fusion sans decrepitation. Parmi la multitude de depots de quartzite qui existe clans le monde, peu sont de qualité supérieure. Or, de par sa composition chimique, le quartzite de La Galette se compare avantageusement à ceux des meilleurs gisements des Etats-Unis, de l'Europe de l'Ouest et de l'Afrique du Sud. D'accès facile pour l'exploitation, les gisements ne sont qu'à une trentaine de milles de Baie Saint-Paul ou de La Malbaie, sur le Saint-Laurent. L'utilisation en metallurgic prévue pour le quartzite de La Galette comprend la production de silicium, de ferro¬silicium et d'autres alliages de silicium. La composition du quartzite est en outre appropriée pour la production de carbure de silicium et de silicate de sodium.
