"Hydraulic transportation efficiency and production optimization are considerations in the surface extraction of Athabasca oil sand deposits. To reduce the dependence on haul trucks, it is possible to extend the hydraulic transport system to production faces using a mobile at-face slurry system (AFSS). The flexible arrangement of connected pipelines transports slurried minerals from the mining face to the processing plant. An experimentally verified mathematical model indicates the friction loss of oil sand slurry associated with the AFSS. Laboratory-scale testing enables extended analyses for examining pipeline slurry transport in an oil sands environment.RÉSUMÉ L’optimisation de l’efficacité du transport hydraulique et de la production sont des considérations importantes dans le domaine de l’exploitation à ciel ouvert des gisements de sables bitumineux de l’Athabasca. Afin de réduire la dépendance envers les camions de transport, on envisage d’étendre le système de transport hydraulique aux fronts de taille à l’aide d’un système mobile de transport des matériaux sous forme de boue à partir du front de taille (AFSS, de l’anglais at-face slurry system). L’organisation flexible des conduites reliées permet le transport de minéraux à l’état de boue du front d’exploitation jusqu’à l’usine de traitement. Un modèle mathématique vérifié de manière expérimentale indique la perte de charge par frottement des schlamms provenant du traitement des sables bitumineux associée à l’utilisation de l’AFSS. Des essais en laboratoire permettent de mener des analyses approfondies portant sur le transport de boues dans des conduites dans un environnement de sables bitumineux. INTRODUCTIONObjectives and scope of studyThe at-face slurry system (AFSS) concept has become a competitive means for materials handling to optimize haulage system efficiency and cost. The mobile and flexible arrangement of the AFSS introduces a unique set of hydraulic transport problems. This paper will focus on developing the mathematical models governing the friction and head losses within the AFSS concept.Background of the problemLarge-capacity shovels and dump trucks are increasingly used for excavation, loading, and hauling in the operation of surface mining. Production cost and efficiency optimization are demanded during the Athabasca oil sands (Alberta, Canada) mining process to secure North America’s energy supply. Increasing haulage distances, rugged terrain, and a constrained mine environment are conditions that will reduce the effectiveness of the shovel-truck haulage system (Frimpong, Szymanski, & Changirwa, 2003). In such conditions, the tire heat index and weight, distance, and time limits for truck haulage can be exceeded, simultaneously creating extreme tire wear and high maintenance costs. In addition to low production cost and equipment effectiveness, a mining environment also requires efficient waste-material recycling and distribution. Waste materials need to be recycled from the processing plant to a new destination such as a tailings dam, or replaced in mined-out areas such as backfill. The Athabasca oil sands configuration and location characteristics result in a mining environment that would benefit from flexible pipelines for constant production and an efficient waste-material recycling process."

IN discussing stope filling, or backfilling, at the Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., a brief description of the problem will first be presented. The Sullivan orebody is a replacement in quartzite, with the ore con-forming, for the most part, with the bedding. The dip of the vein, apart from local irregularities, averages about 15 degrees near the outcrop in the southwest section of the mine, and steepens to almost 40 degrees at the northeast end of the mine. The thickness varies from a few feet to over 200 feet at the widest sections. The mineable length along the strike has averaged about 4,000 feet between the 4,600 and 3,900 levels-the section under discussion in this paper. To date, 28,000,000 tons of ore have been mined by the room-and-pillar method. Prior to 1930, all ground opened up had been supported by ore pillars, left during mining operations. From that time, the recovery of the ore from these pillars has been given serious consideration. Backfilling, as being carried on today, is the result of this study and is being done for two reasons: (1) to allow extraction of the ore pillars, and (2) to minimize subsidence of the hanging-wall rock, except where forced caving is found desirable. PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENTS LEADING TO BACKFILLING When the Sullivan orebody was first opened up, early in the century, there appeared to be low-grade sections of the vein sufficient in extent to serve as permanent support for the roof. However, as mining extended into sections of the vein that showed continuous ore over greater areas, wooden cribs, filled with waste and low-grade ore, were erected. In some stopes, these cribs were as large as 40 ft. by 100 ft. in plan and from 50 ft. to 60 ft. in height, but it was soon realized that this method of support was inadequate. As mining progressed, it was found necessary to leave ore pillars, which eventually became the sole system of support. At first, these pillars were left at irregular intervals, but later they were laid out at definite locations on the mine plans, and these locations were adhered to as closely as mining would permit.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Inca process for continuous cyanide removal from industrial wastewaters was patented in 1984 by G.J. Borbely, et.al. (1). The process requires SO2, air, lime and a copper catalyst. Both free and complexed cyanide are oxidized to cyanate in the pH range 8 to 10. Cyanide bound to iron is removed by precipitation as a ferrocyanide insoluble salt and other base metals are removed as hydroxides.The process was piloted in 1982 on barren bleed solution at Campbell Red Lake Mines Ltd., Ontario (2). Since 1982, the Inca SO2-air cyanide removal technology has been applied in twelve commercial installations. The process has significant advantages over other commercial processes in the completeness of cyanide removal and lower reagent requirements and costs.COMMERCIAL INSTALLATIONSBy the end of 1988 Inca will have applied its patented cyanide removal technology to twelve commercial operations. Three of these, namely Scottie Gold Mines, Dupont of Canada Expl. Baker mill and Carolin, all in British Columbia, Canada, have ceased cyanidation operations but SO2-air cyanide destruction results were good for all mills, particularly so for over two years for the Scottie mill.Removal of cyanide from CIL slurry tailings is applied at Equity Silver (9,500 tpd) and Inca's new 1,200 tpd mill at Inca/Golden Knight. Detoxification of CIP tailings is carried out by Colosseum California (3,600 tpd) and Canamax's Ketza River operation (360 tpd). Repulped tailings from Merril-Crowe flowsheets are treated at Total Erickson's Mount Skukum mill (300 tpd) and Skyline's Johnny Mountain mill (200 tpd) and barren bleed at Inco/Queenston's McBean mill (500 tpd). Lynngold's MacLellan mill (1,800 tpd) treats pond supernatant water. Plating shop cyanide effluents are decyanized at Kuntz Electroplating in Kitchener, Ontario. Many of the above commercial operations were described in some detail in previous publications (3,4). Typical installations are described in this paper. A summary of operating results is given in Table 1."

"Ontario and Quebec taxpayers will have to dig deeper into their pockets to pay more tax, according to budget papers tabled in these provinces in May 1993. Individuals will be hardest hit, but corporations will also have to ante up in the face of higher rates, reduced deductions, and new taxes.Up, up, and away...Somewhere in the bleak picture of the 1993 Quebec and Ontario budgets, there is a bit of good news for the mining industry.Careful scrutiny reveals:• Ontario will correct a capital tax provision which inadvertently penalizes flow through share issuers;• Quebec's flow-through incentives will be extended to December 31, 1995; and • both Quebec and Ontario will allow deductions for mine site reclamation payments.The industry may also find some comfort in the fact that Ontario's new corporate minimum tax will be profit-based (unlike the federal minimum tax), so that non-producers should not face a liability for this tax. There is some concern though, about Quebec's announcement that the refundable credit mechanism in the Mining Duties Act will be reviewed."

THE war, like all destructive agencies, has focused attention on salvage and conservation, and to such an extent that a decade of normal progress has been crowded into a few months. This is particularly true as regards the repair of cutting tools. As a consequence, there has arisen a wide demand for comparable data by those engaged in such work, and for basic information by others who wish to repair tools. These repairs may be grouped in three classes: (1) The repair of broken tools of relatively slender cross-section, such as broaches, reamers, drills, etc., of a type that could be returned to service if a means to join the broken surfaces were available, as fortunately it is in the low-temperature silver solder process; (2) the repair of tools that possess shanks, tangs, and other non-cutting portions that may be broken or damaged to the extent that only the addition of metal will permit their return to service; and (3) the repair of special rotating tools, such as end-mills and milling cutters, that may have portions broken from the cutting edges or have their edges so worn in service as to require building up.

During the past few years, synthetic efforts have been addressed to the synthesis of polymeric materials with optical or semiconducting properties or even with capabilities to act as sensors for volatile organic compounds (1). The most recent studies have been concerned with the synthesis of heterometallic systems with short metal-metal interactions and the determination of their optical properties. These complexes are undoubtly interesting from a theoretical viewpoint and include an emerging class of luminescent materials, in which the observed luminescence results mainly from the interactions among the different metal centers, as well as the environments of these atoms. The understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of these products could permit the design of complexes with appropriate metals and ligands chosen for individual applications. Following a synthetic strategy consisting on reactions between acid heterometal complexes and basic gold precursors we have succeded in synthesizing supramolecular assemblies formed via acid-base stacking, which display tunable luminescence or selective and reversible sensitivity to Vapour Organic Compounds (VOC?s) (2-5). In this sense, in accord with previous Mössbauer studies carried out in the gold precursor complex [AuR2]- (R = C6F5), the basic properties of this and related materials have been employed as building blocks of supramolecular assemblies in their reactions with complexes in wich the metallic centers act as lewis acids as, for instance, Tl(I) or Ag(I) (6). For instance, in the case of silver, by reacting equimolecular quantities of [NBu4][Au(C6F5)2] with AgClO4, in acetone, a solid of stoichiometry [Au2Ag2(C6F5)4(OCMe2)2]n is obtained. The polymeric nature of this material in solid state is confirmed through X-ray analyses (figure 1). It consists of polymeric chains formed by repetition of Au2Ag2 moieties linked through short gold-gold interactions. Nevertheless, in solution, the nature of this polymeric materials was still a matter of controversy and, in this case, the optical properties have been shown as useful tools in order to obtain information. Thus, while dilute acetone solutions of this complex give a emission coming from pentafluorphenyl localized ??* excited states, in accord with the presence of isolated tetranuclear Au2Ag2 units, when the measurements are done at different and higher concentrations, a band that does not obey the Lambert-Beer law appears. This deviation is consistent with molecular aggregation in solution of these units through gold-gold interactions, and a clear correlation between the emssion wavelength and the structure in the solid state and in solution is shown (figure 2). DFT calculations accord with the observed experimental behaviour and show the nature of the orbitals involved in each transition.

Development of the Eldorado Mine THE pitchblende-silver deposits of Great Bear lake, Northwest Territories, were discovered by Gilbert LaBine in 1930. The property owned by Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, consists of 53 claims situated, for the most part, on LaBine point, on the northeast shore of the lake. The Company also holds a group of 10 claims on Dowdell point, 7 miles to the southeast of the main group and across Echo bay. The fractures traversing the ridge on LaBine point can be readily seen from the air. Lack of overburden and the scantiness of vegetation leave rock exposures which are visible for miles. The years 1931 and 1932 were spent largely in staking, prospecting, and examination of the outcrops. A small Diesel plant was shipped to the property in 1932 and underground operations were started. Entry was made into the ore-body by means of an adit. A 20-ton mill was completed in the winter of 1933-34, and since then operations have been continuous, except for temporary shut-downs for additions to the mill. TRANSPORTATION The mine is situated 28 miles south of the Arctic Circle and is reached by an air route of 1,140 miles from Edmonton. The water route follows the course of the Mackenzie River system from Waterways, Alberta, the end of steel, and is approximately 1,450 miles in length. Two portages, at Fort Smith and on the Bear river, respectively, are necessitated by the occurrence of fast water. Transportation was one of the major problems to be solved, and Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, found it necessary to embark upon both water and air freighting on its own account. The Company now operates a Bellanca 'plane with a payload of 4,400 pounds, and a complete water transportation system. The latter was established some years ago by the Northern Transportation Company and it is still operated under that name, but the Company is now a subsidiary of Eldorado. Modern steel boats, oil tankers, and barges were added to the fleet this season. The greater part of the ore shipments are made by water, aircraft being used for this purpose only when occasion demands. Freight rates have been greatly reduced by direct ownership of carriers. For example, water-borne freight is now quoted 'to the mine at $ll0 per ton, as compared with $240 per tan four years ago.

Thank you for your introduction, and thank you to the CIM for inviting me to make a presentation to you today. This is my first opportunity to report to you on the status of the Canadian uranium industry and I am pleased to tell you that the industry is in good shape, and well positioned for the future. As you will no doubt be aware, Saskatchewan benefits from the world?s largest known highgrade deposits of uranium as well as from a high level of provincial, public and northern community support. It is within this unique combination of geology and community that our industry operates. Uranium markets have been extremely competitive for a number of years for several reasons. First, deregulation in the nuclear electric power industry has tended to encourage fuel buyers to use up their large inventories built up at a time when rapidly increasing demand was anticipated. Second, alternate sources from surplus commercial stocks, military materials and reprocessed fuel have presented a major additional source of uranium supply. Today, these secondary supplies are meeting about half of uranium reactor feed requirements. Canada (that is, Saskatchewan) is the world?s largest ?natural? uranium producer with about a third of the global production. Saskatchewan?s mines produced more than 30 million pounds of yellowcake in 2002. Despite low prices, steady demand for uranium will continue. In fact, an increase in world uranium production in 2002 helped feed a more than 3 per cent increase in reactor fuel demand. Low cost production is important for surviving low market prices, but investments are based on longer-term strategies rather than simply responding to market cycles. Cost is not the only issue. In these times of increasing regulatory and public scrutiny we must continue to earn the trust of our stakeholders by adopting the highest standards and staying on the leading edge of technical, social and environmental developments. Managing these issues is as important as traditional concerns of ore grade and cost of production. The last two decades of the 20th century saw the Province of Saskatchewan rise to prominence as the leader in uranium production from facilities, which were at the time deemed world class. These facilities are now either at - or nearing - the end of their production years. We are now bringing on new facilities that will position Saskatchewan to remain the world leader in uranium production for many years to come.

ABSTRACT One-twentieth-scale field trials for conventional and concept dipper designs were compared to mid- and ultra-class-sized conventional dipper performance. Digging effort was used as the performance indicator for comparison. It was shown that linear relationships exist between dipper capacity, suspended hoist load, and peak hoist load. A ratio of conventional and concept dipper performance at the 1/20th scale was then evaluated to allow prediction of the performance of an ultra-class concept design using an independent ultra-class conventional dipper dataset. The outcome indicated a peak hoist requirement of 15.5% less to achieve the same production as the conventional design.

Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.

A considerable amount of waste slag from the pyrite roasting process is discharged every year. Recovery of iron from the waste slag is of great interest for comprehensive use of mineral resource, reduction of environment impact and improvement of economical benefit to related companies. The objectives of the present work are focused on: (1) Compare various procedures for recovery of iron from the waste slag and select a best procedure for industrial trial which is roasting of the waste slag under reducing condition followed by magnetic separation; (2) Investigate the optimum conditions for maximum recovery of iron from the waste slag. The experimental result shows that under the treatment condition found in this work about 36 to 40% of the iron oxide was recovered from the waste slag, where the iron content in the concentrate is 57%. The total recovery ratio of iron, up to 70%, from the waste slag was achieved. After the treatment, sulphur content in the waste slag was reduced significantly and gangue materials, such as SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2, were reduced effectively.

"Excess Gibbs energy is a thermodynamic parameter which quantifies the difference between the value of the Gibbs energy for a real mixture and that for an ideal mixture. More specifically the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of a species (i) in a mixture is indicated by the change in the overall excess Gibbs energy of the solution as the number of moles of species (i) changes while keeping temperature, pressure and the number of moles of all other species in the solution constant. Generally it is obtained from the activity coefficient which in turn can be obtained for a species in a mixture using a variety of models. The most widely used method is to use UNIFAC. Flotation is probably the most important process in the concentration of minerals and requires the use of reagents such as collectors and frothers. There is abundant experimental data which illustrates that collectors of different alkyl chain lengths will change the contact angle and that frothers of different structures and molecular weights will result in changes in key flotation properties such as froth behavior, surface tension and critical coalescence concentration. In this paper it is shown that there is a strong linear relationship between measured parameters such as froth volume/height, surface tension, critical coalescence concentration and contact angle and the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of the molecules used. Proposals are made to explain these correlations.INTRODUCTIONAs is well known froth flotation is arguably the most widely used process in the separation of minerals. In broad terms the process relies on the use of reagents known as collectors to adsorb onto a mineral surface and thus render the mineral particle hydrophobic. Alkyl thiolates are very commonly used for this purpose. The hydrophobicity is induced as a result of the alkyl group’s molecular structural properties which results in it forming a non-ideal mixture with the process water. Surfactants (or frothers) are typically alcohols and are known to lower the surface tension of the system and also inhibit bubble coalescence and reduce bubble size. Since alcohols are polar they will also form a non-ideal mixture with water. The hydrophobic mineral attaches to the bubble and rises to the froth phase where the valuable mineral is recovered as a concentrate. Frothers have often been characterized using the so-called HLB (hydrophobic-lipophilic balance) number but recently it was shown that the use of activity coefficients (?) or excess Gibbs energy (G ex ), which is calculated using equation (1) is a much more appropriate way to describe the behavior of these reagents in non-ideal mixtures with water (Corin and O’Connor, 2014)."

It is the general belief that the coal deposits on Vancouver Island are extremely large, and easily available. Indeed, they are frequently described by prominent public men and by writers in the press as "illimitable" and "inexhaustible." It is well that the facts that have been established as a result of seventy years of surface prospecting, underground operations and extensive diamond-drilling in this coalfield should be disclosed. HISTORY The presence of coal on the coast of British Columbia was first made known by Dr. W. F. Tolmie in 183 5. This coal was brought to him by Indians from the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, probably from Suquash. In 1850 the existence of coal at Nanaimo was announced by Mr. ]. W. MacKay. Development was started in 1852, and coal was shipped before the close of 185 3. The first operations were carried on by the Hudson&apos;s Bay Company, who operated the mines until 1861, when they sold them to the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. Practically all of the operations in the immediate vicinity of Nanaimo have been carried on by this Company and its successors. In 1869, Mr. Robert Dunsmuir discovered coal about five miles north-west of Nanaimo, at Wellington. The Welling-ton Colliery Company was organized, and began to produce coal from the Wellington mines in 1871, the coal being shipped from Departure bay. This colliery was a large producer for several years, but was finally closed in 1900.

Commercial deposits of sodium sulphate are harvested from alkaline lakes that are widespread throughout semi-arid southern Saskatchewan and adjacent southeastern A lberta. Concentration of sodium sulphate occurs in undrained basins under semi-arid conditions. Precipitation runoff from land adjacen1 to 1hese basins leaches 1he mineral from the soils and carries it in solu1ion 10 the basins. The process may be largely subsurface, wherein spring seeps feed basins associated with buried (preg/acial) river valleys. Evapora1ion during summer concentrates salts in the brines, and chilling of water below sa/Uration poin1 during win1er resu//s in deposi1ion of sodium sulpha1e (mirabili1e) crystals on lake bo//oms. Sodium su/pha1e, commercially known as sa/1 cake, ranks second only 10 po1ash in cen1ral-wes1ern Canada's nonme1allic mineral production. // is recovered from su,face brines, directly from intermittenl salt beds, and, until recently, by solution mining of shallow subswface deposits. Sodium sulphate is extrac1ed from seven alkaline lakes and sail f/a1s in Saska1chewan and one in Alberta. Annual produc1ion is approxima1e/y a halfmillion tonnes. Manufacture of kraft paper is the mos1 significanl marke1 for salt cake, but addi1ional quantifies are used in the glass and detergent manufac1uring indus1ries.

Glencore Nikkelverk is operating its Chlorine Leach Process in Kristiansand, Norway, producing nickel, copper and cobalt metals by electrowinning. The copper tankhouse, with an annual capacity of 40 000 tons, is based on traditional technology with copper starting sheets and cast lead anodes. Due to the integration of this copper sulphate process in a nickel chloride refinery, operating conditions are unique. In recent years, operating costs have escalated, and health, safety and environment are top priorities. Test work on a new copper process involving permanent cathodes was therefore initiated in 2007, and a pilot plant was started up in 2012. The objective was to introduce innovative technologies and tailor these to be robust in the Nikkelverk process, to form a basis for a new sustainable copper tankhouse with a high degree of automation. Key learnings from more than 10 years of R&D work is presented, focusing on cathode materials and copper metal deposition including product quality, robotic stripping, coated titanium anodes, electrode contacts and alignment, electrode current monitoring with Hatch HELM tracker technology and acid mist capture using cell hoods with off-gas scrubbing. The new copper tankhouse project was approved in December 2018, and commissioning is planned in 2022. INTRODUCTION The Kristiansand nickel refinery was started up in 1910, processing nickel-copper matte originating from Norwegian mines. It was the first industrial plant in the world to produce nickel by electrolysis using the Hybinette electrorefining process. After roasting to burn off sulphur in the matte, copper was leached and recovered as cathodes by electrowinning with lead anodes. In the first years, the copper cathodes were fire- refined and cast into ingots for sale (Thonstad Sandvik, 2004). The Nikkelverk refinery was acquired by Falconbridge Ltd. in 1929, and since then matte from Sudbury, Canada has been the main feed source. The Hybinette process was in operation until 1975 when conversion to the newly developed Chlorine Leach Process was started (Stensholt, Zachariasen, & Lund, 1986). In this process still used today, nickel and part of the copper in the matte is leached using chlorine gas generated on dimensionally stable anodes in the nickel and cobalt electrowinning tankhouses, as illustrated in Figure 1. The presence of dissolved copper ions in the strong chloride leach solution is essential for effective chlorine absorption and nickel dissolution. To improve copper-nickel separation, slurry from the atmospheric leach is pumped to autoclaves and then to cementation tanks for precipitation of copper as copper sulphide, which is collected in filter presses. The leach residue, also containing the precious metals, goes through a 3-stage wash to remove chlorides before being introduced as a slurry to fluid-bed roasters for sulphur removal. The resulting calcine is then leached in spent electrolyte from the copper electrowinning tankhouse, to dissolve most of the copper and also some nickel, cobalt and other elements. After separation of the leach residue, elements like Bi, Te, As and Ag are removed from the strong copper sulphate solution by reaction with metallic copper in three columns in series filled with cut copper cathodes. The purified solution then passes polishing filters before being mixed with spent electrolyte and returned to the electrowinning cells.

It is known from earlier and recent research that mechanical properties of intact rock like uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Young's modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio (?) are influenced by shape deviations of test specimens as deviations from the ideal cylinder. That impact can be significant at certain level of inaccuracy of specimen preparing, and it should be objectively evaluated and controlled in testing. The effects of intact specimens side straightness, ends flatness, ends parallelism and perpendicularity to the specimen axis, on UCS, E, and ?, measured in several actual ways during laboratory compression tests, were determined by previous research on 90 homogeneous specimens of limestone. In this paper, we subject these new experimental results to Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to model the mentioned dependence, to identify significant connections of variables and to evaluate the conclusions obtained directly from experimental phase. This study indicates how the responses of the model (outputs) – parameters UCS/E/??of limestone rock depend on factors (inputs) – parameters of specimen shape deviations like flatness R, parallelism P and perpendicularity O, assuming modern test machines with spherically seated upper platen. Starting from general RSM model with three factors (R, P, and O), we investigated the multiple linear regression models of specific mechanical property (UCS, E, and ?). Using the NCSS program ("NCSS 2004 and PASS 2005") in several steps, final models with very high coefficients of determination were developed for properties with the most evident effects of specimen shape deviations: nine models for strength UCS and UCS50 (equivalent UCS for specimen with 50 mm diameter), and three models for ?L (Poisson's ratio calculated from axial deformations measured on the entire specimen length). These statistical models with their response surfaces further strengthen and confirm the results and conclusions from the experimental phase. The critical values of R, P, and O are established using an additional statistical analysis to determine the lower and upper engineering limits. These findings set the basis for the new eligibility criteria for specimens of limestone (and similar rock with UCS about 100-150 MPa) in further testing of strength and deformability.

For many years, it has been known that certain loud noises may, with prolonged exposure, temporarily or permanently damage a person&apos;s hearing ability. Pneumatic rock drills, al-though among the offenders, have, until recently, remained unaltered and unrestricted as to noise output. Now, there are drills available with higher rates of penetration and yet with noise levels reduced to those of previous models or less. Use of such drills, when proved to be superior in noise attenuation and of acceptable performance, should be encouraged in order to reduce future hearing losses to a minimum. People Have the Right to Hear P ERHAPS the earliest recognized indication of hearing loss due to industrial noise was the deaf-ness developed by the workmen in boiler factories. "Canadian process industry experts have often observed the strong trend for U.S. industrial safety and environmental laws to creep across the border. These experts will be interested in new United States (OSHA) regulations (29 CFR 1910.119), and anticipated new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that will require over 28 000 U.S. refineries and chemical plants employing more than three million workers, to begin a comprehensive Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) of these complex plants immediately. Impending EPA regulations are expected to expand these efforts and add process Hazard Frequency and process Hazard Consequence reviews for many additional industrial locations.These regulations were created to reduce catastrophic industrial accidents, and emergency releases of hazardous chemicals which endanger employees, the public, and the environment.Accurate, and field verified Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) are essential to permit a meaningful Process Hazard Analysis or emission release to be done. Today accurate P&IDs often do not exist. Many companies that have started to update their old P&IDs have found the process to be far more difficult, time-consuming,and expensive than they ever thought.This paper describes a new technique of computer drawn ""Intelligent"" P&IDs that can make a Process Hazard Analysis less expensive, more accurate, easier to perform, and provides lasting benefits to the plant owner long after the PHA has been completed."

ABSTRACT Gold-bearing quartz veins in the northeastern Ontario and north western Quebec mining camps are shown to have been mineralized in part by epithermal solutions. The vertical gradient of pressure during this stage of mineralization is calculated, using decrepitation temperatures of quartz and thermoelectric potentials of pyrite. The base of the Cobalt sediments, which lie uncomformably over part of the mining region, may be taken as datum level in calculating the depth of erosion into the basement below that level. The vertical extent of the epithermal gold mineralizaiton in this region is at least 9,000 feet below the datum level. INTRODUCTION IT WOULD have been difficult a few years ago to convince economic geologists that after making a series of measurements in a laboratory in Toronto, the depth of erosion which has taken place below the base of the Cobalt sediments at any place in the Ontario-Quebec mining region can be calculated to the neare.st 500 feet, or that the same series of measurements would also serve to allow a prediction of the minimum vertical depth of probable ore in a producing mine in the same region, with the same degree of certainty. Possibly it is just as difficult today, but the following description of the data and calculations may help to demonstrate the reliability of the method.
