Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

The Carajßs Province presents several volcano-sedimentary sequences that comprise the Itacai·nas Supergroup. The rocks represent bimodal volcanism, and clastic and chemical sedimentation in relatively unstable basins subject to recurrent structural events with subsidence and volcanism. The Grpo Parß Group represents one of these sequences with mafic volcanic rocks that enclose discontinuous jaspilite lenses, with development of large high-grade orebodies (Fe >65 per cent). This unit is named the Carajßs Formation and presents peculiar characteristics compared to other iron districts in the world, thereby departing from the classic Lake Superior or Algoma iron formation types. Owing to the dense vegetation, lack of outcrops and harsh landscape, the structural analysis of the district can only be accomplished by combination of regional field work, detailed structural work on the open pits, and remotely sensed image interpretation, in this case Landsat ETM7, JERS-1 images and the SRTM digital terrane model. The regional trend of the several sequences of the area is approximately N-S and the structure is dominated by a flattened flexural fold system with axes moderately dipping WNW, intersected by several strike-slip faults subparallel to their axial plane. The Serra dos Carajßs represents an s-shaped synform-antiform pair, herein named the Carajßs Fold. This regional structure is partially disrupted by the Carajßs Shear Zone that divides it in the northern (Serra Norte) and the southern (Serra Sul) Ranges and also probably prepared the terrane with the development of pathways for mineralising hydrothermal fluids forming large high-grade massive iron bodies. Syntectonic granitic bodies played an important role in the structural evolution of the area as well. They caused localised ductile flattening deformation and thermal contact metamorphism in surrounding terranes. The Estrela pluton, for instance, was responsible for the discontinuity of the regional trend between the Serras do Rabo and Leste. The Carajßs Province is regionally the upper crustal product of a very shallowly eroded dome-and-keel geometry of Neo-Archaean volcano- sedimentary units intruded by syntectonic calc-alkaline intrusives and overlying pre-existing infracrustal rocks. The lithostructural data suggest continental-margin back-arc basin development and closure in an oblique collision belt, with N-S shallow crustal shortening, parallel to the inferred pre-existing strike of the stratigraphy.

Classification of mineral resource estimates is one of the most important responsibilities of the Competent Person. In recent years, classification decisions have been driven more by the detailed block-by-block attributes generated by the now widely applied geostatistical estimation methods, and less by a general geological overview. This is increasingly resulting in æspotted dogÆ outputs, in which blocks of Inferred Resources or unclassified material separate blocks of Measured and/or Indicated Resources, or individual drill holes are surrounded by annuli of Measured and Indicated Resource blocks. Not only are such outputs potentially misleading, since they ignore fundamentals such as continuity of geology and mineralisation between drill holes and the imprecise nature of resource estimation, they can also cause substantial problems for engineers undertaking mine designs and estimating ore reserves, particularly for underground mines. Competent Persons for mineral resources must keep in mind the purpose of their work, and should use their experience and judgement to avoid or smooth out æspotted dogÆ classifications, providing a result commensurate with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence. For their part, ore reserve Competent Persons must understand the resource estimation and classification process, and should question resource classifications that are not consistent with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence.

In the mid-1970s, trucking ore from 400 m depth to the surface was perceived to be the practical and economic limit for metalliferous underground mines. Improvements in truck design and decline development resulted in the economic depth of haul exceeding 600 m by the mid-1990s. Today, mine operators and contractors are planning to use trucks for ore haulage from depths in excess of 1000 m. The authors of this paper estimate that there are in excess of 300 diesel-powered trucks operating in mines in Australia, and that by the year 2005 more than five per cent of these trucks will be æroad trainsÆ (ie trucks towing powered trailers or truck-trailer combinations). This paper examines the road train concept, presents cost and performance data and describes the advantages and disadvantages of the road train system as well as proposing the types of applications for use of road trains in Australian metalliferous underground mines. Truck performance is based on payload and average speed (expressed as tonnes x kilometres per engine hour (t km/h)). A road train with a powered trailer has a large payload capacity and two engines to provide a high ratio of power to gross weight. Thus it is possible to exceed 300 t km/h per cycle for an average haulage gradient of 1:9 compared to 250 t km/h for conventional articulated dump trucks (ADTs). It is likely that road trains in excess of 100 t capacity will have application for level ore haulage at large mines in Australia.

My paper presents a discussion of the legislative and departmental requirements in connection with the acquisition of exploration rights for minerals (other than petroleum and coal) in the Independant State of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Queensland and he practical problems associated with land entry and land ownership associated therewith. In general there are many similarities in the methodology and philosophy behind the legislation in each country and the contractual requirements established thereby between the exploration company (the explorer) and the government and the mines department or equivalent in each place. There are also a number of differences. I have prepared the paper on the basis that my audience will largely consist of -experienced explorers and the paper is intended to act as a brief refresher and a guide to the philosophy and the practicalities behind the legislation and practices in ground entry in each case. I will deal in turn with New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and then Queensland.

It is a great privilege to be invited to give this address at this centenary conference. A centenary is a time for recollection, for celebration and for looking ahead. The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. I hope in this address to make some useful comments about Australia's future (and mindful of but not forgetting New Zealand), looking ahead for 25 years or so, and the mining industry's role in that future.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330-p.s.i. tension to 3,750 p.s.i. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock mo.odel mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a. borehole oxtensumeter and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a. vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face waa.s advanced the roofmovement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The ma.j ority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a. radioactive isotope and a. scintillation counter in a. pair of parallel bcreholes promises to be sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.

Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. The Charters Towers 1:250 000 Gravity Data Set represents a new initiative of the Department of Resource Industries (DRI, formerly Queensland Department of Mines) to provide high quality regional gravity data over areas of the State that have high potential for new mineral discoveries. The Department has adopted a strategy to upgrade geophysical data to complement the ongoing Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) of this Department and in areas where the data would be of most benefit to the mineral exploration industry. Part of this strategy is to ensure that these data are released within 6 months of data collection.The 1989 Charters Towers survey was completed as a joint project with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR), and is the first regional geophysical data acquisition project undertaken by the DRI. Prior to this survey, the only gravity data in this area dates from the B MR regional surveys carried out between 1960 and 1967.

This paper summarises the results of a study carried out for the Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland, aimed at identifying the major water-related issues facing the minerals industry internationally and the research required to support the development of practicable solutions. An overview is given of the sources and uses of the worldÆs water resources and of the regional and global sustainability of water supply and management. Agriculture is the worldÆs major user of water; it wastes more water than the minerals industry uses. Water reform and its potential impact on the minerals industry are discussed with particular reference to Australia and South Africa. The sources, uses and management of water on mine and processing sites are outlined. Particular attention is paid to the importance of groundwater as a source of often saline water that can be used in mineral processing and for other purposes. Aquifer storage and recovery has the potential to help conserve water resources. Generally, the major uses of water on mining and processing sites are for mineral processing and refining and for the associated tailings disposal. Water consumption for these purposes may be reduced by recycling process water, using saline water, paying close attention to water management, thickening tailings and using techniques such as dry stacking and paste. A change in the minerals processing paradigm in respect of water use could come through research into new, improved and less costly dry processing techniques. The treatment of mine and processing water will be required increasingly before water is reused, stored, discharged or sold, and before sites are decommissioned. Research and development are required to reduce costs and develop new treatment methods. Mine closure and decommissioning raise a number of long-term water issues requiring continuing generic and site-specific research and development.

The substantial growth in world demand for Queensland coking coal has seen a number of new coal mine developments in the Bowen Basin in recent times. The Bowen-Broken Water Supply Scheme (BBWSS) is presently based on water supplied from Eungella Dam and storages at Collinsville to two major pipelines. In early 2004, three successive years of well-below average rainfall had left Eungella Dam at critical levels, threatening the regionÆs mines, which rely on it for their essential water supply. SunWater noted that without significant inflows into Eungella Dam, or the development of a new water supply to the region, existing mines would be severely restricted in water supply, and downstream economic impacts to the region would follow. SunWater investigated the opportunities for additional supply capabilities, including combinations of off-stream storages, additional pipelines, and raising Eungella Dam. An off-stream storage (OSS) was selected as being the preferred option to improve the reliability of the system and head off impending falls in announced allocation for the system. The integrated quantity quality model (IQQM) is the Queensland GovernmentÆs preferred model to define and assess total catchment performance against water security and environmental objectives. Modelling of the performance of the water supply system, with and without the proposed OSS, was required to provide justification to the customers of the system that the OSS was in fact required, and also to optimise the configuration of the OSS within time and budgetary constraints. In the case of the BBWSS, no environmental base flows are dictated by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water (NRM&W) at present and the primary reason for applying IQQM was therefore to investigate the trade-offs between supply options and reliability. SunWater produced IQQM outputs for a range of scenarios for the proposed off-stream storage, and these IQQM outputs were then used as input to a decision-support tool based on the GoldSim modelling package. The GoldSim model was then applied to investigate the water supply reliability for high priority users resulting from various existing and/or proposed water supply infrastructure configurations coupled to the hydrologic system. The GoldSim model included the ability to assess the long-term water supply reliability impacts for each of the water supply end-users for a wide range of user-defined scenarios. Non-technical model users were able to change the size of the off-stream storage, pipeline capacities and assumed climatic conditions and test for themselves the relative benefits (in terms of water supply reliability) of different infrastructure configurations under consideration. The decision tool was of significant benefit in assisting the decision process to SunWaterÆs mining customers. These customers needed to decide if they felt that the increased reliability in their water supplies from the system that would be created warranted the estimated increased charges that would require to be levied to recover costs of the new infrastructure with appropriate profit margins. The conjunctive use of IQQM and GoldSim was successful in demonstrating the impact of both hydrological and non-hydrological issues on the future water supply reliability in the BBWSS and resulted in a decision to proceed with the construction of a new OSS.

The global goal of Sustainable Development is not achievable without major changes in the way goods and services are delivered and material needs are satisfied, which requires tremendous innovation in the supply chains and life cycles in which minerals and energy processing take part. Values derived from minerals and metals processing need to be delivered with a fraction of current ecological impacts, which means removing technical obstacles to eliminating waste and emissions in the minerals cycle. The challenge is to find economically attractive ways to get there, through eco-efficiency gains in existing operations, capturing regional synergies, streamlining and greening the materials supply chain, and commercialising new process technology and new products. This paper summarises the outcomes of the Sustainable Resource Processing project, which was designed to provide a strategic analysis of what sustainability means for minerals and metals processing and how that can be effectively translated into technical and business innovation.

The explosion of a charge in a drillhole sets the surrounding rock mass into vibrating stress wave motion. Except in the immediate vicinity of the drillhole, the dynamic stresses associated with this motion do damage only to pre-existing joints, cracks, or other weak planes, not to the rock material in between these. The joints are weak in tension, therefore the damage occurs as a result of tensile stresses. The initial damage process in the rock mass that ultimately breaks loose in front of the hole is similar to that in the remaining rock behind the drillhole. Recorded or calculated values of the vibration velocity and frequency contain a wealth of information about the combination of stress and strain that causes the damage. This paper outlines a new technique by which the peak strain energy derived from measured or calculated vibration velocity records is used to determine the local fragment size distribution. It combines two previously known and well tested techniques, namely the Holmberg-Persson calculation of the peak vibration velocity generated by an extended charge and King's calculations of the fragment size distribution as a function of the strain energy in rock crushing. Both of these calculations are based on experimental data and have been tested and found to agree well with actual conditions in their respective fields. Holmberg-Persson's calculated peak vibration velocities have been used successfully to predict and control damage to the remaining rock in cautious blasting, while King's calculation successfully describes the comminution of rock in mechanical crushing. Preliminary predictions of fragmentation in two types of rock blasting, a large hole open pit mining blast and a tunnel round, indicate that the new technique for fragmentation prediction has the potential for predicting fragment size distributions within the rock removed by the Blast.

The paper will review the fundamental policy issues and options that have been considered in the determination of the proposed allocation and pricing (ie royalty) regime for minerals under the Crown Minerals Act 1991. It will consider such influences on the new disposal, allocation, pricing and management arrangements for the Crown's mineral estate as the existence of prior ownership claims, exclusivity in access, the requirement for cost recovery and the treatment of contingent liabilities.

Over the past 5 years, Bougainville Copper Limited has undertaken a number of major plant expansions to the copper concen- trate production plant at Bougainville in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea. These projects have scheduled three additional ball mills, three new banks of Outokumpu flotation cells, four additional tertiary screens, two additional tertiary crushers, and more recently four high capacity 24.5m dia. tailing thickeners. The value of the five separate projects totalled more than A$100 million. A requirement of commissioning and bringing on line of each of these projects has been to minimise both operational losses and copper concentrate production. The commissioning has been successfully implemented by detailed planning of the commissioning work in conjunction with the plant operation. Planning has been detailed for each man involved on an hourly basis, highlighting the work required on each commissioning task that is to be undertaken and the time expected to achieve activity Completion.

The New Guinea Mobile Belt is the northern zone of the Melanesian Orogeny (Dow and Sukamto, 1984), which consists of a complex zone ofupthrusted and accreted, regionally metamorphosed geosynclinal sediments and volcanics of Mesozoic to Eocene age and the overlying sediments. On the northern margin of this accreted terrane, formed an Eocene to Middle Miocene island arc. The North New Guinea Basin formed during the Upper Oligocene on the accreted margin. The depositional history of this basin is complicated by major crustal movements during the Upper Miocene to Holocene. During the Middle to Upper Miocene two magmatic arcs were emplaced. The northern magmatic arc is in part, spatically and genetically related to the Eocene to Middle Miocene island arc. The Maramuni-Utawa Magmatic Arc (southern) is a result of the Oligocene accretion and regional metamorphism. Coincident witt these magmatic arcs are belts of mineralization containing porphyry Cu-Au, epithermal/hydrothermal Au, Ag + Cu-Pb-Zn, exhalative Cu-Pb-Zn + Ag-Au, lateritic Ni-Cr-Co + PGE and alluvial Au, PGE, Cr occurrences and deposits. An intergrated tectonic model is presented for these and other data for the northern zone of the Melanesian Orogeny.

Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

The Hydrogeological Survay of the bauxite mines in Hungary was establisned 30 years ago. The goal of the HS has been to collect the all available date needed to solve the hydrogeological problems of bauxite mines. The results of activity of the HS have been summarized in the annual reports-. This report is going to present a few methods to evaluate the hydrogeological properties of fissured, karstic rock ie. the evaluation of drilling mud losses, the statistics of core samples evaluated by a special computer program for calculation the porosity and permeability of the rocks. An experimental injection test is presented together with the development of a new portable instrument to get signes of the water table change during the injection test in every two second. It can be proved that the flow around the well may be a transient one if the yield of the injection exceeds a definite one (Figure 2.). It was observed that the permeability calculated from the pumping test date may be 1.2-1.6 time higher than it coming from the injection test. A practical example is presented also how to use the results of the HS for designing the dewatering of a new mine together with an analogous computer model to forecast the yield expectable for making the drift tunnel. A suggestion based on the hydrogeological feature has been done for the dewatering without using electric energy (see Figure 3.-6.).

The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. A new elution process has been developed for the recovery of gold thiosulfate from ion exchange resins. This is a synergistic system which utilises a base eluent, such as nitrate or trithionate, along with an additive that improves the elution of gold. The use of the additive enables lower eluent concentrations to be adopted, as well as weaker eluents such as chloride. With the chloride + additive system, complete gold elution can be achieved within 12 BV when utilising an eluent flow of 5 BV/h. When the eluent flow is reduced to 2 BV/h, complete elution is achieved within 8 BV. Similar results are obtained when using nitrate or trithionate as the base eluent. A copper pre-elution process has also been developed, whereby the majority of copper can be stripped within 5 BV prior to gold elution. This method is a significant improvement on the ammonia + oxygen pre-elution previously suggested. The development of a new analytical procedure based on ion chromatography with UV detection is also described for the quantification of polythionates in leach solutions and loaded on resins. This enables analysis to be carried out for resin-in- leach type processes where the polythionates are being formed in solution and simultaneously adsorbed onto the resin.
