Today tunnel segment liners are sealed with corner-vulcanised gaskets made of extruded elastomeric compression profiles. The profile geometries and the elastomeric materials have been further developed in course of time to meet the steadily increasing water-proofing requirements. After 40 years of using such compression gaskets, a wide range of proven standard profile geometries and well-known brands can be found on the market. Even so, there is still potential for further developments and improvement, not only with regard to the water-proofing performance. Permanently increasing cost pressure in the segment production plants demands further developments and new solutions with regard to application techniques. Native seed and plants are often a core input into the rehabilitation process of mine closure. Native plant establishment rate and performance is a function of many input elements including seed quality (purity and germination percentage), processing, treatment, storage, supply chain handling, application and ongoing management. Traditionally native seed has been supplied with very limited supporting information which in some cases has led to establishment failures, repeated attempts at successful plantings, and biosecurity issues, leading to increased rehabilitation costs for mining companies. Product procurement scrutiny, and sustainability credential requirements, in all supply chains is increasing the need for transparent, accurate, verified, and certified information. This collectively continues to evolve towards a social license to operate in all industries, including mining. The Australian Seeds Authority (ASA), in partnership with native seed supplier AustraHort, traceability software company Trust Provenance and supporting partners including Transport for NSW and Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR), were recipients of a DAWE National Traceability Grant. The project team has developed a framework and traceability software platform currently being piloted within the Australian native seed industry. The framework and platform allow for all critical-tracking-events along the journey of a native seed batch to be easily captured utilising a smart phone application (APP) and the global standard for data capture. The platform provides a unique identification for each batch of seed and critical tracking event. The batch ID belongs to that batch and all supply chain stakeholders can contribute to batch traceability by providing more information/data to increase information integrity. This gives the end user, and other stakeholders, increased levels of trust in the product to support value, increase efficiency and reduce costs. For mining companies these efficiencies and cost reductions are in the form of information availability across site/company, potentially improved vegetation establishment, less rework and efficient monitoring. Ultimately this contributes to safe, stable and sustainable rehabilitation. By capturing data on harvest, logistics, storage (including temperature and humidity), aggregation/blending, treatment, application and ongoing management, the native seed industry and end utilisers of native seed have a greater level of product integrity, brand integrity and information integrity.

South Africa is a semi arid, water scarce country that has undergone recent major political and social transformation. This transformation has ensured that water management has become a primary environmental concern in the South African mining industry, raising the status of water from an ancillary service to a fundamental factor in mine planning. The coal mining industry has been involved in the development of integrated catchment management plans since the late-1980s when a series of initiatives commenced in catchments where collieries operated. The plans focused attention on water supply and water demand management, the equitable access to water supplies, and intersectoral approaches to decision making, before the promulgation of new legislative and policy frameworks. Development of an integrated watershed management plan for the Olifants River basin, located in the Mpumalanga province, commenced in 1990. The Olifants River is an international river basin of 54 570 square kilometres and shared by South Africa and Mozambique. The upper watershed, locally called the Witbank Dam catchment, will be the focus of this paper. It has an area of 3400 square kilometres and is the major coal mining, power generating, and maize-growing region of the country. The processes embodied in the integrated watershed management plan had no formal guidelines but rather developed in an ongoing fashion over time. The plan commenced with a situation analysis involving the major stakeholders that identified principal technical shortfalls. These shortfalls were investigated under the guidance of multisectoral committees. The Olifants River Forum was started to extend awareness of the initiatives on an informal level throughout the whole watershed. The results of the investigations enabled water quality guidelines to be established for the upper catchment. To achieve the guideline levels additional initiatives were developed including a scheme to manage mine water discharges into the river system, the development of a standard four-step water management process, investigation and development of innovative mine water treatment processes, specifically sulfate reduction technologies, the use of gypsiferous mine water for irrigation, river and dam hydrological models, groundwater models and biomonitoring. Significant outcomes from the process have been achieved including the improvement in water quality in the Witbank Dam catchment. Equally significant have been the development of partnerships between businesses and between businesses and the community specifically in the use of mine water for irrigation. The plan realised a number of requirements for success including, the development of trust, openness and transparency with information, the essential need for consultation and negotiation and the involvement of third parties to validate information. The future still holds the potential for disputes between upstream and downstream water users but understanding, transparency and accountability between all players have, and will in future, enable the matching of the increasing demands on a scarce water resource to the needs of all.

An integrated computer software system has been developed by Fluor Australia for modelling, mine planning and production scheduling of single or multi-strata deposits. Modelling of both quantitative and qualitative variables (e.g., thickness, basal elevation, density, grade/ash content) is performed via continuous, minimum curvature surface representations. These may be developed from inverse distance weighting or geostatistical kriging interpolation techniques in conjunction with bicubic spline surface interpolation. The modelling process, rather than being purely mathematical, incorporates facilities for reflecting structural geology interpretations (e.g., faulting, pinchouts) and geological boundary conditions (e.g., subcrop and outcrop). Volumetric programs provide the facility for continuous integration over models (at any specified integration increment) for any number of specified irregular polygonal panel areas or regular rectilinearly defined block plan areas. Multi-variable integration is available, incorporating any or all operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to provide multi-strata tonnages, etc., (e.g., Volume 1 * density 1 + Volume 2 density 2). These programs provide true three-dimensional integration with the facility for calculating results on an area by area, level by level, strata by strata as well as overall basis.

The story of the Penjom gold mine located near Kuala Lipis on the Malay Peninsular demonstrates the valuable role successful exploration companies can play in the development of the gold mining industry. Avocet Mining PLC ('Avocet') began exploration in the area on a limited budget in 1989, securing land tenure around the Penjom alluvial workings in July 1990. The lease granted, known as Block 7, formed part of a land package offered at the time by the Pahang State Government to develop the resources of the area. Until the late-1980s, the Kuala Lipis region, situated approximately 180 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, had restricted accessibility for security reasons precluding serious exploration or mining activity. The situation has changed dramatically in the 1990s, with several foreign explorers active in the Peninsular, targeting old alluvial and underground workings adjacent to the north-south trending Raub-Bentong Suture. Deeper drilling of these prospects has shown there is potential for both small- to medium-scale open pit mining and possibly underground operations, providing companies such as Avocet with an ideal mining investment opportunity.

Cleaner Production stands for a proactive and preventive approach to industrial environmental management and aims for process- and/or product-integrated solutions that are both ecologically and economically efficient (æeco-efficiencyÆ). Pioneers in the field were large manufacturing and processing industries in the USA (since the late-1970s), but it took until the early-1990s before Cleaner Production was generally recognised as a valuable approach for large and medium sized enterprises. The application of Cleaner Production in mining and minerals, metals and energy production appears to lag behind other sectors, such as manufacturing and processing. This paper starts with a discussion of the Cleaner Production concept and provides examples of its application from a few selected Australian mining and minerals processing industries. This evidences that Cleaner Production can achieve significant reductions in environmental impact, in terms of reduced waste and emission generation and in terms of conservation of materials, energy and water, while simultaneously reducing operating costs. The paper then investigates a number of key issues pertaining to the implementation of Cleaner Production; ie organisation and management of Cleaner Production activities, effective tools for mastering the Cleaner Production concept as a way of life, and performance measurement.

Chlorine as a lixiviant for gold possesses a number of significant chemical and Idnetic advantages over cyanide but because of its corrosive and vaporous nature the method of implementation needs to be significantly modified. At comparable reagent concentrations the dissolution rate for gold in the C12/Cl- systems is some 10 - 100 times that achieved in the 02/CN system. The dissolution rate in the chlorine system is largely a function of the concentration of C12, Cl- and pH. Under conditions of low Cl', (less than 50 g/1), the dissolution rate begins to drop off dramatically over the pH range from 3 - 4. Increasing the level of dissolved chloride ions shifts the pH of this rate reduction to around pH 5 at 100 g/l NaCl, and to around pH 6 at 300 g/l NaCl.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

Nickel laterite HPAL circuits are known for their complexity and have presented a large number of challenges to process engineers worldwide. An attitude commonly encountered by the author is that the beneficiation of the ore is relatively simple and that the difficult problems are in the realms of hydrometallurgy. On a number of occasions beneficiation has become the 'poor cousin' in the process design phase. Another common theme is that significant difficulties are encountered when beneficiation circuits are started up, invariably slowing the ramp-up of the remainder of the circuit. In some cases the problems impact on throughput for a long period and can require major rectification capital. The HPAL Ni laterite projects encountered each have their own set of beneficiation problems that need to be understood before an appropriate circuit can be designed. This paper will discuss a range of design issues including geometallurgy, ore characterisation through laboratory testing, the application of appropriate sizing and analytical procedures, the selection of appropriate unit operations, materials handling of plant feed and products and setting meaningful plant design requirements.

The Golden Pig mine has embarked on a diamond drill program design philosophy that increases flexibility of the program by greatly increased drill pattern densities. The use of standard broad pattern diamond drilling at the Golden Pig mine has previously lead to operational inefficiencies and impacted significantly on the costs of the mine. The diamond drill program philosophy and its interaction with mine planning is explained. The case study of the E lode mining as used to internally justify the increased drill densities is detailed.

Many of the other 11 small island nations in the region, such as Vanuatu, Pulau and the Solomons have been the subject of considerable exploration orientated towards gold in the past few years but without any deposit found with confirmed economic viability.

Consequently they have a number of limitations. This paper describes a new dredge control concept which paves the way for improved efficiency and increased production.

The mining industry in Western Australia is a large sector of the WA economy providing $12 billion (1993) of the export income for the State. Historically, mining in WA developed from traditional prospecting in the late-1880s leading to major underground operations by the turn of the century. Large open pits were developed in WA following World War II and became increasingly common since the gold boom of the 1980s. With the development of the open pits has been concomitant evolution of mining legislation, principally the Mining Acts of 1904 and 1978, which has been also accompanied by a practical evolution of the administrative system within the Department of Minerals and Energy. The mining industry has recognised the need for sound environmental management at mine sites, taking up the challenge and becoming a world leader in rehabilitation techniques. Any environmental management program in the industry has three stages: approval by government; management by the industry; and return to the State in an environmentally acceptable condition. The WA environmental requirements, procedures and industry performance in these three stages are discussed.

The history and milestones in the evolution of support systems utilised in the mass-mined chrysotile mines of Shabanie and King are discussed in detail. The use of block caving, false footwall or sublevel caving mining methods brings with it some major support problems, which are exacerbated, in our low rock strength mining environments. The paper discusses the various support elements and systems that have been used successfully or otherwise in these operations. Some predictions for the future of rock reinforcing in our ground conditions are highlighted, in relation to geomechanics, levels of mechanisation and production risk analysis.

Geometallurgy aids the understanding of orebody variability through the integration of geological and processing information, thereby enabling spatial mapping of processing (eg comminution or separation) performance across a deposit. In order to do this, estimates of quantitative geometallurgical attributes are needed so that continuous downhole profiles can be generated for each attribute, providing vital data for the development of processing domains through geostatistical modelling. However, as traditional comminution tests are high cost and/or require large samples, current practice typically results in insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. The aim of this work was to find a method to estimate comminution indices based on data that is widely available at mine sites. This data includes mineralogy and chemistry of drill core samples, plus logging information such as lithology and alteration. Work to date indicates that comminution parameters such as semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Power Index (SPI), Bond Work Index (BWI) and A*b (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight test (DWT) Index) can be modelled using chemical and/or mineralogical data. The estimated hardness indices can then be propagated into the mine site database and used in the definition of processing domains that map inherent variability across a deposit. The estimates can thus provide geometallurgical inputs for spatial modelling, mine planning and optimisation initiatives.CITATION:Hunt, J, Kojovic, T and Berry, R, 2013. Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.

Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

Scope 3 emissions are a set of often overlooked indirect greenhouse gas emissions within a company’s value chain and represent the majority of emissions for many sectors. These emissions arise from activities conducted by entities beyond the reporting organisation’s ownership or direct control and are often challenging to calculate. Scope 3 emissions typically encompass purchasing goods and services, transportation and distribution, managing operational waste, downstream processing and utilising sold products. Within the mining sector, scope 3 emissions often constitute a significant portion of the overall carbon footprint. Therefore, these emissions are a significant aspect of the future of sustainable mining. As the journey towards a world committed to achieving Net Zero Emissions has started, the time to spark a transformative conversation in the mining industry has arrived. Consequently, a better knowledge of scope 3 footprints allows organisations to assess their emission mitigation projects against the total carbon impact of their operations and products.
