In the mining and minerals industry, development, introduction and construction of new plant designs, to meet sustainability objectives, face a series of major hurdles. Typical are the long investment cycle times, the designer does not normally control the spending (the owner does), and the industry is inherently technologically conservative or risk adverse while accepting the often more significant geological, market and political risks.æSustainable Plant DesignÆ is an approach to plant and facility design that drives the necessary culture change and acceptance by minimising technical risk and maximising potential returns. A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

Australia has been slow in adopting the use of underground space as a part of our urban planning process. Australia has one of the highest levels of tunnel advance per capita per annum in the world, yet the use of underground space in our cities appears difficult for our planners and politicians to comprehend, not withstanding the general availability of good quality rock and contractor expertise in Australia. However, the lack of space in our urban areas is being highlighted as our major cities expand outwards and people and businesses gravitate towards city centres. Typical potential underground space uses include car parking, self-storage and archiving facilities, water storage, underground quarrying, small industrial facilities and another layer of traffic (electric and fuel cell) and services network. Historically, blasting in high density population areas has resulted in blast vibrations and blast overpressures exceeding the limits, which in some case have been set extremely low in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). This makes conventional blasting difficult, often requiring low charge weights per delay and associated small blast sizes and slow advance rates. However, the introduction of new technologies, such as computer aided drilling, electronic delays and low-energy explosives has made this task considerably easier. Although more expensive than conventional blasting, excavation by blasting using these products and technologies in relatively good quality ground is believed, in most cases, to be less than the cost of mechanical excavation. In this paper, the authors look at innovative trends in underground quarrying, underground commercial space and tunnelling and put forward their concept of future excavation demand, future product requirements and technical specifications to the drill and blast community.

The paper describes a system for providing mine management with a continuous indication of the effectivness of longwall coalface powered supports in controlling roof-to-floor convergence. The system comprises on-face instrumentation monitoring convergence and support leg circuit pressures, a means of transmitting the output of that instrumentation to the surface for collection, and software which presents both a condensed analysis for rapid review of the current state, and extended analyses from which remedial action can be recommended if a problem is identified. The results of a field trial are presented showing that meaningful results can be obtained.

This paper will examine the prospects for Queensland's non-fuel mineral industries as we approach the 21st century. The opportunity for growth is unprecedented. Exploitation of recent discoveries, proposals and developments in downstream processing are predicted to contribute to a doubling of the State's mineral exports to around $10 billion by the year 2000. In 1995 - 96 the value of Queensland's mineral production was $6 billion, comprising $1892 million metallic minerals, $127 million non-metallic minerals and $4 025 million total fuel minerals. For many years Queensland has been among the world's major producers of copper, silver, lead, zinc, bauxite and mineral sands. Recently Queensland has become an important producer of magnesia. Queensland's ability to compete results from its location close to rapidly developing Asian markets, the diversity of its major minerals and an increasing ability to add value to the resources base using competitively priced energy. Northwest Queensland is one of the richest base metal provinces on earth following the recent discovery of five world-class orebodies. Of these deposits, Osborne (copper-gold) has commenced production and Cannington (silver-lead-zinc) and Ernest Henry (copper-gold) are scheduled to be developed by 1997. Century Zinc Limited and the Queensland Government are negotiating with native title claimants on the development of Century (zinc-lead-silver). Expansion is in progress at the Mount Isa copper mine (renamed the Enterprise) and copper smelter and a high analysis fertiliser project may be developed based on Phosphate Hill. Korea Zinc Company Limited has reached agreement to construct and operate a 350 000 Mtpa zinc smelter/refinery near Townsville. There are future expansion prospects for the vertically integrated major industrial mineral operations based on Weipa bauxite and Kunwarara magnesite. Upgrading of the Boyne Island aluminium smelter will require a doubling of alumina consumption. Downstream processing options for Kunwarara magnesite are being investigated and are expected to lead to increases in production and the manufacture of a range of value-added products. At the Yabulu refinery near Townsville, nickel and cobalt production using imported ore is to be increased and a commercial cobalt plant is to be built. Additional opportunities for further processing and manufacturing are associated with proposed new mines at Ely (bauxite), Skardon River (kaolin) and Goondicum (ilmenite). Recently discovered resources of zeolite and perlite also offer exciting development possibilities. Other manufacturing opportunities such as glass and ceramics based on local and plentiful clay and silica sand could replace imports. Silica sand at Cape Flattery is currently exported and production is expected to double.

Contract mining is now attracting interest in the underground coal sector.

Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

In 1965, Peter Flawn author of the famous text-book on Mineral Resources (1966) published a paper in Economic Geology with the delightful title `Who took the `Economic' out of Economic Geology?'. He opened this most interesting article with the following paragraph:If one were called upon to cite an example of a fish out-of-water he could hardly pick a better one than a recent graduate of geology of an America university who is suddenly faced with the responsibility of evaluating or appraising a mineral property. And I venture to say that the 'ftsh' with a doctorate - even in economic geology - is not much better equipped than one holding a lesser degree. The new graduate with a major in economic geology probably knows the significance of the various sulphur isotopes, he surely knows a great deal about the chemistry of the ore forming fluids and he recites with ease the arguments which prove deposits are epigenetic rather than syngenetic. However he is a rare bird indeed if he knows anything about the economics of the mineral industry. The truth is that geologists who are engaged in evaluation work are largely self taught. I ask my more distinguished and experienced colleagues - `Has it always been this way? Who took the `economic' out of economic geology?

Prior to resource modelling, sample scale data is normally grouped into spatial domains that reflect zones of homogenous properties. These domains are usually based on a combination of grade and other variables that reflect, for example, geology and alteration, or variables known to correlate with properties of the samples that affect downstream processing. Domaining and wire-framing sample scale data is a time intensive task and it is difficult to track more than a few variables simultaneously while establishing domain boundaries. This is especially the case in operations with complex data, for example, a combination of multi-element assaying of total element concentrations, and/or phase specific assaying such as sulfide sulfur, carbonate carbon, cyanide available gold, and/or downhole geophysical measurements. To minimise unintentionally grouping samples of contrasting properties within the same domain, unsupervised statistical methods are available that can automatically identify samples atypical of the domain, both as univariate tests, and as tests that take correlation within the domain into account. Unsupervised methods in this context means methods of identifying atypical samples that require just the selection of the domain and input variables. Thresholds are derived robustly from the data itself, and the results are therefore repeatable and operator independent. Atypical samples may be thought of as outliers, ie, samples that are separated from the ‘majority’ of the data. If these atypical samples are themselves spatially associated, they may be allocated to an alternative existing domain or allocated to a new domain. Care should always be taken to ensure that identified outliers are due to meaningful causes and not due to data coding and storage errors, although the identification of the latter is still valuable. *This is an abstract only. The first step in the mining and processing of nearly any mineral ore is comminution. Since the oil embargo of 1979, the mining companies have been striving to reduce energy consumption and costs. The first serious step was the introduction of in-pit crushing in the early 1980s. With in-pit crushing accepted as a standard design mode, the energy saving emphasis turned to comminution practices. A great deal of attention has been focused on blasting and grinding. The one step that has not been addressed is the primary crusher. This paper will address the opportunities for comminution improvement through optimisation of the primary crusher.

This paper describes the development and implementation of an optimisation tool developed as part of the Mass Mining Technology (MMT) Project. The tool, known as the SLC Schedule Optimiser, is capable of optimising the schedule of development and production activity for a sublevel cave, given a fixed draw strategy, for the life of the mine.This paper starts by describing the development and production scheduling problem for a sublevel cave, the geotechnical constraint that a schedule of activities must adhere to, and outlines the pre-existing manual planning procedures used to produce schedules.Following this, the paper then outlines the optimisation tool developed, describes the changes to the planning process it has enabled and finally quantifies the improvement to operations this tool has brought using Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining Operations as a case study.CITATION:White, J, Perryman, A, Campbell, A D, Hollis, B and Chitombo, G, 2016. Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

This paper reviews the need for, and potential of, dry technologies in mineral processing, and considers the problems that will have to be solved for such technologies to be economic. The need for water in conventional mineral processing is reviewed, together with the advantages and disadvantages of operating wet and dry. A wide range of dry processing techniques have been developed in the past, some of which are in routine use either in mineral processing or in allied industries. However more information is needed to determine which of these is appropriate to replace conventional wet processing. It is concluded that a new paradigm is required for the design of processing flow sheets, which will need to extend to innovative ways of valuing particular process routes. Research is also required to develop current dry methods to increase throughput and overcome other disadvantages, and to develop new or refined dry separation methods, perhaps exploiting alternative mineral properties.

The seventies was a decade of intensive hydrometallurgical activity, firstly for copper recovery, then uranium, and finally gold. In comminution, semi-autogenous grinding was applied to uranium and gold ores. In leaching there were extensive investigations into pressure and in-situ systems, and into ammonia and chloride leaching processes. Solvent extraction became a major unit operation for copper recovery. New reagents and equipment were introduced. There was a resurgence of ion exchange for uranium as low grade sources were tapped and continuous ion exchange systems developed. Carbon-in-pulp technology came to the fore for gold recovery with the development of desorption and electrowinning systems. Electrowinning was widely applied for copper in conjunction with solvent extraction. There was a continued move to greater mechanisation and higher current density. There were important developments in solid-liquid separation such as high capacity thickeners, belt filters and sand filters. Many of these trends will continue in the eighties. Interesting new developments can be expected.

I know the theme of the Congress is "The 21st Century - Mining for Mankind" but I hope you will understand why my address touches upon some near-term issues as well. With the world oil market the way it is at present, "the long term" seems to be next week and no one is even sure what will happen tomorrow! So I am going to take a little licence with the theme of the Congress and talk about some fundamental issues that have much to do with the current uncertainties. The ways in which these issues are resolved and the role governments elect to play in the next few years will determine both the shape of the petroleum industry in the 1990s and beyond and the success with which we can confront a growing and inevitable future dependence on OPEC oil resources. But just in case you are not familiar with what has been happening in the petroleum industry recently and why the future seems more uncertain than ever, let me show you the gyrations in oil prices over the past 13 years, and remember that it is only another 13 years or so years to the 21st Century.

The realities of export competition require that Mine Management sig- nificantly reduce the costs associated with accidents and workplace ill-health. Newer management approaches are proving effective in reducing the Total Cost of Risk through a strucured Occupational Health and Safety Programme exhibiting the following features: ò Formal Company Policy ò Accountability for OH&S performance clearly designated to each level of management and supervision ò Effective utilisation of a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Co- Ordinator and a Mine Occupational Health and Safety Adviser ò Development of realistic OH&S Objectives ò Training of Management, Supervision and Workforce in Occupa- tional Health and Safety ò Development and adoption of Safe Work Practices and Procedures ò Effective employee selection procedures, control of Contractors ò Monitoring of the health of the workforce ò Collection, recording and distributing information on all Mine inci- dents, accidents, injuries and damage ò Ensuring that the Mine environment is healthy and safe ò Effective Emergency Procedures to deal with injury, fire, rescue and other situations of risk ò Controlling those Mine hazards which cannot be removed ò Adopting a high standard of Occupational Rehabilitation ò On-going visible Management participation in the programme to ensure that momentum is developed and maintained. This approach requires that Occupational Health and Safety be given equal status with product quality, maintenance of plant and output per- formance; its implementation is rewarded with improved morale and major cost reductions.
