Obtaining a representative sample of bulk materials in process industries is critical to providing valid data for process control and custody transfer (valuation). The accuracy of a sample, that is to say how well the sample represents the material in the process, is directly related to how well the process can be controlled and to how much a product may be worth. Sampling accuracy then is in fact related to bottom line profitability.Sampling theory offers information and equations on how to take a representative sample from a process, however, the actual practice of extracting a sample from the process can be more of an art.Key sampling variables include product specifications such as bulk density, particle distribution, material conveyance, practical sampler location, sampler type and sample frequency and volume/mass.This paper discusses basic sampling theory, sampling methods, types of samplers, how to develop a ‘real world’ sampling system and current manual and automated samplers.Key points include ‘practical precision and variance’, material properties, flow properties, direct sampling versus indirect sampling, sampler types and applications.CITATION:Powalisz, J E, 2014. Otago Schist and Klondike Schist are two Paleozoic-Mesozoic metamorphic belts on the circum-Pacific margin in which there has been a long history of abundant alluvial gold mining, but only minor hard-rock gold mining.   Modern exploration for hard-rock gold is ongoing in both belts, and the active Macraes mine in Otago (>2 Moz production) highlights the hard-rock potential of the geological setting of these belts. Hard-rock gold mineralisation in both belts formed in the latter stages of schist exhumation, after rocks were subjected to major regional ductile folding and then uplifted through the brittle-ductile transition. The majority of known hard-rock gold-bearing systems in both belts consist of well-defined, but generally discontinuous, vein swarms. Most Otago veins are hosted in steeply dipping post-metamorphic normal faults and fractures. However, the Macraes mine is hosted by a late-metamorphic shear zone, and much ore is sulphide-impregnated auriferous schist. Goldbearing veins in the Klondike schist are hosted primarily in extensional sites associated with post-metamorphic compressional structures. Some disseminated sulphide mineralisation is associated with Klondike veins and this is important as it extends the exploration target for these veins. No foliation-parallel late metamorphic mineralisation has been identified in the Klondike but exposure is relatively poor compared with Otago and both schist belts are highly prospective for deposits of this type.

"Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach, which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c. 0.28 m' s'. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera- forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust, that precludes the development of long- term magmatic cycles at Taupo.Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

"Ore is the economic portion of a mineral deposit that can be extracted economically. Hence an ore type is a classification of the ore based on one or more dominant characteristics in order to enable communication between unit operations and/or technical disciplines.In project evaluation, ore types are often defined early based on geological observations by geologists and initial metallurgical testing is based around this classification even though a number of processing options can be under evaluation. However, the geological drivers of performance for each of these processes can be very different and the ore type classification for one process may not be relevant for another. In operations an ore type, as either defined in the project evaluation phase or those that evolve with additional knowledge, is unlikely to provide the knowledge required across all the unit operations. The ore type has a meaning to someone but does not necessarily for all unit operations across the value chain.Geometallurgical or orebody knowledge has evolved through the consideration of multiple processes within the value chain, the improved understanding of variability of process performance within ore types and the effect on the complexity of the mineral extraction processes. Furthermore orebody knowledge has been moving from personal based knowledge and understanding to a more process oriented approach where measurement and spatial and process performance modelling is playing a greater role. Advances in mine planning and scheduling allow for both detailed analysis of the block model and the expected extraction processing attributes across various time scales. This capability of analysing and describing the complexity still requires to be communicated to the various unit operations, which may be beyond the traditional classification of an ore type.The limitations of an ore type and potential alternatives to enable the relevant information to be communicated to the relevant groups are outlined through a number of case examples across the value chain.CITATION:Jackson, J and Young, M F, 2016. Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

The Black Star Open Cut is located immediately adjacent to the township of Mt Isa and is situated in the middle of extensive pre-existing infrastructure including two concentrators, two smelters, a wet fill plant and two shafts. At any one time there are in excess of 500 people working on the surface within an industry-accepted 600 m exclusion zone from Black Star blasts. Apart from the surface operations there are also the underground operations including the lead mine (closed in December 2005) and the Enterprise and X-41 mines that must clear for all Black Star blasts. The application of industry standard blasting exclusion zones (600 m) was risk assessed as imposing operationally prohibitive constraints which could cause significant business interruption due to the logistical challenges required to ensure that all personnel from surface plants were evacuated for each blast and potential for lost production whilst these personnel were not operating the plant. In was therefore an imperative for the blast exclusion zone to be reduced. This was achieved by the: use of a QA/QC team to ensure that relevant drill and blast implementation is within an acceptable tolerance (KPIs) from design; use of high-quality stemming material called HMR, which is a by- product of the concentrating process and is generally sized at -14 mm with very little fines; implementation of appropriate training and support to Black StarÆs own blast crews, reinforcing the need to achieve the designed amount of stemming in every hole; and provision of appropriate support from Black StarÆs management for additional resources to ensure that every blast achieves design within the KPIs but especially in high-risk areas. The blast exclusion zone was successfully reduced after monitoring the flyrock results from more than 176 blasts. Black Star Open Cut now maintains a minimum blast exclusion of 200 m in critical areas; however, general blasting currently uses a 250 m exclusion as this provides additional risk management whilst still minimising the logistics associated with clearing and securing the slightly increased area.

The development of Western Australian magnetite deposits has lead to the design of some of the largest grinding mills and plants in the world. One of the projects demonstrates the efficiency gains possible by developing a simple yet thorough test program for circuit design. By drawing on the experience of current magnetite operations in Australia and the Mesabi and Marquette iron ranges in the United States, a basic flowsheet was developed. Through comprehensive testwork with AG, ball and stirred milling the flowsheet was optimized to take full advantage of each grinding mill’s strengths to reach the required final grind size. Laboratory work was verified in the pilot plant to optimize the energy efficiency of each grinding step while ensuring adequate liberation at each step for sufficient gangue rejection. By using three stages of grinding, the ball mill can best be employed in ensuring all top size gangue material is liberated and removed in the second magnetic separation step. The inclusion of the IsaMill, with its inherent steep product size distribution, as the tertiary grinding stage ensured that maximum grade was achieved and simplified the downstream process while giving further improvements in total grinding capital and operating costs. In this way the combination of the two technologies downstream from the AG mill is far more efficient than either would be on its own by reducing the total installed power by 1/3 and annual grinding media cost by 2/3.

Fluorine is a penalty element due to its reactive nature. In acidic environments many fluorine minerals dissolve to form hydrofluoric acid (HF), changing processing conditions. When smelted HF can be released, causing negative effects to nearby people and the environment, as well as potentially damaging the smelter. Sale of ore with high fluorine levels elicit a financial penalty or are banned outright. Real-time sensors create the opportunity for instantaneous decisions on ore processing due to changing conditions. A fluorine sensor would allow rises in fluorine concentration in a processing stream to be flagged, and decisions on processing conditions or diversion to stockpile before processing could be undertaken. As fluorine is a light element, it is difficult to detect with in-field XRF devices and does not work well with PGNAA. There are currently no existing sensors to quantify the presence of fluorine in real-time, and thus decisions based on fluorine grade cannot be made at minute- or even hour-scales. Sensors designed to measure the presence of minerals that contain fluorine are a possible avenue to enable the real-time detection of this element. Mineral-based sensing may also give an added advantage of additional information about how the fluorine will react under different processing steps. The authors were given a grant under CRC ORE II (project number P1–005) to search for mineralspecific signatures suitable for real-time analysis. The work focused on novel regimes and applications of fluorescence as a means to detect specific minerals. The aim was to exploit fluorescence responses unique to minerals of interest in mining systems in order to produce sensors that address gaps in existing capability. After the successful discovery of signatures specific to two major fluorine minerals an additional grant (P1–014) was funded to develop the research into a prototype on-belt sensor, in partnership with Scantech International Pty Ltd. This paper details the development of a sensor package through multiple Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) through collaboration with government/industry grant schemes, academics from university, and a sensor-focused Mining Equipment and Technology Services (METS) company. We give a brief description of the new sensor technique and provide a case study of multi-disciplinary collaboration.

The Apeketon Business Hub in Lihir, Papua New Guinea, emerged in 2019 through a partnership between Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) and Lihir Gold Limited (LGL), a subsidiary of Newmont Corporation. This development was driven by a shared vision for the Lihir gold mining operation to further enhance opportunities for the local community and strengthen the economy’s resilience post-mine. At its core, the business hub serves as the epicentre of ABV’s operations in the region. It includes a drop-in resource centre which provides the community with mentoring and consulting services, and access to a range of impactful workshops facilitated by ABV’s local staff and skilled volunteers. These workshops focus on local Lihirians but are open to the entire community, including Newmont employees. We design and continually refine Apeketon Business Hub support programs and offerings driven by community priorities, building trust through long-term relationships, and working side-by-side on real-time challenges. We offer three core programs to different levels of the community, from individuals and families to start-ups, large corporations, and landowner groups. There is significant demand for the support services provided by ABV, with over 350 Lihirians participating in our workshops over the 2023 calendar year. One of the hub’s core offerings is the Family Money Management Program, which addresses crucial challenges faced by Lihir households, particularly in terms of financial resilience. The program takes a comprehensive approach, assisting families in long-term planning and developing skills to effectively manage the income they derive from their employment with LGL and other enterprises. Significantly, the program also addresses financial stress, a factor often associated with domestic violence (Fox et al, 2002). By empowering women and promoting joint financial decision-making, the Family Money Management Program fosters a culture of savings and improved financial management, ultimately enhancing economic resilience within the community.

The Fimiston reserve is being depleted at the rate of one million ounces per year; most of which is processed by the Fimiston plant, with the remainder being stockpiled. As for most other large open cut mines around the world, Fimiston has an excellent dispatch and tracking system. Reconciliation is used to determine how the various models used in mine planning (such as a reserve, budget and schedule models) are tracking against production. It is also used to gauge the performance of grade control estimation against production; however, analysing the results of this can be complicated and, at times, misleading. The reconciliation process involves adjusting the monthly production data to equal the mill reported tonnes and grade, plus the change in stockpiles. This adjusted number is then compared to the grade control reported tonnes and grade, the scheduled model (monthly planning model) tonnes and grade and against budget (Reserve) tonnes and grade. This paper includes explanations of all assumptions made in the reconciliation process, including the end of month closing stocks balance, the application of adjustment factors to the dispatch data to create a new balanced set of production data and the monthly sign off to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements of the North American owners. The reserve is reconciled by proved and probable classification. This tool is used to assess the robustness of the classification scheme utilised and identify any reconciliation issues as they arise. Within the Fimiston deposit there are still issues that are clouded by the assumptions made concerning the scale of observation, poor data support and the mining of the narrow lode areas of the deposit. The declared ore mined (DOM) number (which is defined in the paper) can be significantly affected by these assumptions, and these need to be clearly stated and understood when looking at the reconciliation data. The DOM tonnes and grade is a good indicator of real mine performance as it adjusts mined tonnes and grade to take into account the milled tonnes and grade each month, and prevents cumulative errors from building up in mine predicted dispatch numbers or end of period stockpiles. This number allows monthly monitoring of the mine to mill performance and allows valid comparisons to be made back to budgets and reserves over a period of time. KCGM uses three month rolling averages to monitor performance against reserve and budget models. This ensures that monthly distortions in the figures due to stockpiling issues or over mining in a particular period do not lead to false conclusions. Reconciliation performance over a longer period (12 - 18 months) is used to adjust reserve models should significant variance be observed. By closely monitoring the reconciliation performance at the Fimiston operation, fine tuning of all aspects of the grade estimation process from reserve through to grade control can be made. This allows the most accurate data to be used when planning from reserve data for the Life of Mine Plan through to grade control data for short-term mill feed.

The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. Current production,. is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Limited at Wittenoom Gorge. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. Output has been increased steadily to an' average of 12,000 to 14.,000.. long tons; per annum over the past six years. The total Western Australian output to the end of 1962 is reported by the Mines Department as 110,013 long tons valued at úAl2,403,728..

The Ok Tedi open pit mine will have final wall heights in excess of 750m. The behaviour of these excavated slopes will be influenced by the presence of numerous defects. This paper discusses the identification of possible failure mechanisms within the pit walls based on mapped fault and joint data. Results from analyses using these data have formed the basis for the ultimate pit design.

As a result of the globally increasing consumer use of electronic devices, it is expected that pressure will increase on the supply chain of precious metals. Hence, recycling of these electronics becomes increasingly important, as well as optimising the current processes. One major issue in metallurgical processes is the amount of metal that is lost into the slag. This metal loss is inherent to the production process and therefore, additional processing steps such as slag cleaning may be required. Slag cleaning can be done in electrical resistance furnaces where heat is produced using the Joule effect, making the slag’s electrical conductivity an important operating parameter. Since slags are ionic liquids, the electrical conduction happens via the movement of ions which is called ionic conductivity. However, within the presence of transition metal oxides, a second mechanism of conductivity occurs as electrons are able to hop from one transition state to another, which is known as electronic conductivity. As ‘FeO’ is a common slag component in the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry, both mechanisms are present, but their proportions vary with the respective amounts of the two forms of the multi-valent ions and hence, with the oxygen partial pressure. The goal of the present study is to develop an experimental set-up and methodology for measuring the electrical conductivity of synthetic SiO2 – CaO – AlO1.5 – ‘FeO’ slags at various oxygen partial pressures.

Australia is a highly significant hub in the global minerals business. This paper will present the results of global and national studies looking at the potential 20 to 30 year future evolution of the mining and metals industry.   Globally, the World Economic Forum launched a Mining and Metals Scenarios project in January 2009 to explore the question: 'How will the environment for the global mining and metals industry look in 2030?'. As part of a structured strategic foresight process, eight workshops were held across the world over the course of a year which brought together over 200 leaders from the private sector, government, academia and non-governmental organisations. The workshops were supplemented by personal interviews and guided by an international advisory board.   Critical uncertainties for the future of the industry were identified and compare extremely well with the outcomes of a national survey of AusIMM members identifying the key issues and drivers shaping the future of their operations. Global context was one of the most significant issues identified by The AusIMM membership, which is expanded in the World Economic Forum study in terms of: geopolitics; global governance; action on climate change; and economic outlook. More specifically, this global study developed three divergent yet plausible scenarios describing potential environments for the global metals and mining industry in 2030. These scenarios are compared with ground-breaking global foresight work coordinated by the Stockholm Environment Institute in the 1990s. The scenarios will help decision makers rehearse alternative futures, anticipate potential hazards and identify business opportunities - new solutions, new markets and new connections. The presentation will present these scenarios as a way of challenging thinking, testing established wisdom, and stimulating imagination about the business case for the mine of the future. As Marcel Proust put it, 'The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes'. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY no paper was prepared for this presentation.

Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

Biologically-mediated phenomena are involved in many of the natural processes by which mineral deposits are formed and ore bodies transformed and degraded. They may facilitate the environmentally-damaging effects of mining and mineral-processing operat- ions. Under contrived and controlled conditions, however, these phenomena can form the basis for economically- attractive processes for the recovery of metals from low-grade deposits by dump, heap or in situ leaching. They have application also in processes for the regeneration of leaching reagents and some potential for'-the recovery of metals from dilute solution. The micro- organisms concerned are potential sources for the production of novel flotation and solvent-extraction reag- ents. Perhaps the greatest opportunity for biotechnological processes in min- ing and metallurgy lies in the possib- ility of the evolving of novel proced- ures for the substantially complete recovery of metals from process tail- ings by the unlocking of recalcitrant and complex mineral assemblages, and for the beneficiation of some mineral materi,hls.

Reporting Codes are not prescriptive on methodologies to report or classify Mineral Resource Estimation results, but the assessment of risk and uncertainty is required, and is likely to be increasingly important in future Code updates. The 2012 JORC Code indicates that relative confidence in tonnage-grade estimations should be considered for classification, and that there should be a discussion of relative accuracy and confidence levels in the Mineral Resource Estimate. These considerations are also relevant to the drill hole spacing required for various classification categories, along with other geological and data quality criteria. This paper summarises the theory, principles and current practice of various drill hole spacing analysis techniques for both achieving a desired level of resource categorisation and for optimising grade control or resource drill-out costs. The authors provide practitioners with a guide in their use to assess uncertainty and relative accuracy, as illustrated by a number of case studies. While all drill hole spacing studies rely on the assumption of consistency of the continuity model from current to future drilling, the range of methods available provide much more objective outcomes than previously adopted ‘rules-of-thumb’.

The action of free rolling disc cutters is well understood, relationships between disc geometry and performance having been established both in the laboratory and under field conditions. However, under severe operational conditions a malfunction of the disc bearing assembly is likely to produce a definite change of cutting action. Collapsed or siezed bearings can even prevent the disc from rolling and thereby create what is equivalent to a drag pick. This paper describes a programme of laboratory experiments using deliberately stalled discs. Their performance under such conditions is contrasted with that for a free rolling disc and also with a drag pick having a ridged front developing into a negative radiused back clearance angle. In conclusion an assessment is made of the influence stalled discs can have on the torque and thrust requirements for a tunnel boring machine.
