THIS note gives comments on the paper by Kitaev et al on p. 68 of this book and compares results with those obtained by ourselves. We wish to say that the authors are to be congratulated on their sophisticated approach to an important problem and that it complements our efforts on flow maldistribution.1-5 It is our view that Eqs. (1)-(5) on p. 69 are impressive, but unfortunately with present day computers and computational facilities, it would be quite impractical to contemplate the numerical solution of these. Eq. (8) in the authors' paper, on p. 70, does provide the logical starting point for tackling flow maldistribution problems and strictly speaking this equation is more accurate than Eq. (1) in our paper in this book. We note in passing that there is direct experimental evidence to support the contention that our Eq. (1) is at least a reasonable approximation and one may question in a practical sense whether the refinement afforded by Eq. (8) in the paper by Kitaev et a/ is justified. While one must readily accept the appropriateness of Eq. (8) of Kitaev et al as a starting point, the subsequent mathematical manipulation by the authors is open to serious criticism. In order to solve this complex, non-linear equation Kitaev et al postulated irrotational flow, which afforded considerable simplification. One can argue simply on physical grounds that the assumption of irrotational flow is inappropriate, a fact which should be readily apparent on inspection of the flow fields shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of Kitaev's paper. It follows that while the starting point through the use of Eq. (8) is correct the results derived from this starting point may be suspect because of the erroneous nature of the irrotational flow assumption.

The thermal decomposition of sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) adsorbed onto activated carbon was studied by coupled thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). Two discrete mass losses were observed, in the temperature ranges 100 - 230¦C and 200 - 340¦C. The same two gases, carbonyl sulphide (COS) and carbon disulphide (CS2), were the main gases evolved in each of the mass losses. Samples of activated carbon from two industrial plants were obtained and analysed by TG-FTIR. COS and CS2 were not detected in one of the samples. The other sample did show evidence of COS and CS2, which indicated that fouling of the carbon by SEX was still present. Other organic compounds were detected in the evolved gas stream of both samples, indicating the presence of organic reagents other than SEX.

To the layman or the casual in- vestor, the critical problems in the mining industry appear to rest on the questions of finding and developing an orebody. The high cost of finding a major orebody suggests that the search is the only matter of real concern. However, the resulting operations which hopefully will provide a profit- able return, depend very heavily on the quality of the servicing that the particular industry receives. Once the mining venture has been established with the necessary plant, equipment and infrastructure, the routine servicing becomes an important function of the operations.

The Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator has an extensive history of reagent trials, with different reagents coming in and out of favour over the years. The research and use of carbon depressants is particularly prevalent, as carbonaceous pyrite is a major source of concentrate dilution. Years of research led to the use of naphthalene sulphonate due to its excellent carbon depression properties. However, due to rising reagent costs carbon depression ceased in the late 1990s. This led to the loss of knowledge about the use and value of naphthalene sulphonate. Cyanide is used at the Copper Concentrator for the sole purpose of pyrite depression and over the years multiple projects have been devoted to finding alternatives to it. In 2012 the neighbouring MIM Lead-Zinc Concentrator replaced cyanide with naphthalene sulphonate which resulted in cost savings and the elimination of a hazardous reagent. In 2013, plant trials were conducted at the Copper Concentrator in hopes to replicate the outcomes obtained at the Lead-Zinc Concentrator. The results of the trials conducted at the Copper Concentrator showed that naphthalene sulphonate could not replace cyanide and this work was set aside to pursue more promising projects. Further research conducted in 2014 found that mineralogy and a better understanding of the depressing mechanism of naphthalene sulphonate held the key to improved pyrite depression at the Copper Concentrator. The findings showed that Mount Isa copper ore contains two forms of pyrite; euhedral pyrite (cubic pyrite) and framboidal pyrite (carbon rimmed spheres of pyrite), both of which require different reagents to sufficiently depress them. Naphthalene sulphonate was found to be an excellent carbon depressant, suitable for depressing graphite and framboidal pyrite, whilst cyanide specifically targets euhedral pyrite.In 2015 laboratory test work was conducted to examine the use of naphthalene sulphonate in conjunction with cyanide to selectively target both forms of pyrite. This work led to a full plant trial, the results of which showed a significant increase in plant performance, with higher copper concentrate grades and recoveries being achieved. This paper aims to focus on the benefits and importance of understanding past work and linking a detailed knowledge of feed mineralogy to reagent selection for improved plant outcomes.CITATION:O’Donnell, A R and Muller, M L, 2018. The Paddington I and proposed Paddington II Pits are both located in what is, by Eastern Goldfields standards, a large tonnage-low grade orebody. The Pits have been designed to supply ore to a substantial Treatment Plant at the designed rate of 875,000 tpa. (This throughput is currently being increased to 1,200,000 tpa).Generally the orebody lends itself to large tonnage mining techniques, relying on only a relatively small amount of sampling. The surface enrichment zone and depleted zone are reasonably complex and require more intensive grade control and sampling techniques as typically utilised in many surface mines in the Eastern Goldfields, although as experience and understanding of the nature of the orebody was gained, less sampling became necessary.

One method of forecasting prices of metals is based on analysis of historic relationships between prices, inventories and consumption. The first, but generally overlooked step in this analysis should be to remove from the inventory and consumption figures the effects of seasonal variations. The next step is to construct diagrams which show prices plotted against ratios of inventories to consumption. These diagrams indicate that, when inventories are high, prices show little response to changes in inventories. Below a critical level of inventories, however, the psychology of the market changes and small changes in inventories lead to large moves in prices. The critical level of inventories is termed the "pinch-point"; the diagram which shows prices in relation to ratios of inventories and consumption may be called a "pinch-point diagram".

Tube bundle gas monitoring systems have been used in the mining industry for over 50 years. The initial design was based on four individual gas analysers along with a series of solenoid valves, gas sample conditioning and flow control mechanisms to ensure the correct gas flow stream volume to the analyser. Simtars staff have identified flow control issues when providing operational support to coalmines on numerous occasions. The accuracy of the oxygen analysis is dependent on control of the gas flow to the analyser. Oxygen is one of the parameters used in calculating Graham’s ratio which is used for the detection of spontaneous combustion activity in coalmines. This paper will provide data which identifies the flow control issues by comparing mine site records for the two surface sample lines in the analyser room and the gas cage. Mine sites will be deidentified within the paper. The paper will discuss some of the changes that have been made in modern tube bundle systems and compare the change to the initial design specification developed by the UK National Coal Board, investigate possible operational impacts and provide a technical fix to solve the current flow issues being experienced at some mines.

A relationship is predicted between oxidic nickel in slag, oxygen in matte and Ni/Fe ratio in matte after the examination of thirty sets of contiguous matte and slag samples taken from industrial nickel smelters. Oxidic nickel in slag is found to increase with increase in oxygen content of matte of constant Ni/Fe ratio, and it is proposed that the relationship may be used to predict nickel solubility in slag from a knowledge of matte composition alone.

The steeply dipping Mammoth orebody is mined by Gunpowder Copper Limited using a sub- level uphole bench stoping method at a mining rate of 350 000 tonnes per year. of three per cent copper ore. Access to the mine, is provided by 1 in 9 decline which spirals in the footwall connect-, ing all the sublevels, thus maximising mobility and accessibility of trackless mining equipment Sublevels are driven in ore off cross- cuts from the decline every 15 metres vertic- ally. Sublevel drives are stripped out to widths up to 18 metres before cutoff slots are mined at each end. A two boom fan drilling jumbo is used to drill inclined rows of holes to the floor of the sublevel above. Two or three rows are fired at a time which allows broken ore and remnants from the level above to be mucked out by rubber tyred LHD equipment to the brow. Ore widths of up to 80 metres are en- countered at lower levels where ring drilling from longitudinal drill drives will break ore to a draw point system below. Development is carried out with three boom rubber tyred jumbos. All haulage from the mine is in 20 and 35 tonne rear dump trucks. All aspects of the mining operation are discussed including ventilation, pumping and drainage, services and future planning.

A major component of Sydney’s new South West Rail Link project is the Hume Highway Underpass (HHU), an 80 m long twin track mined tunnel excavated at a depth of just 5 m below the pavement of the Hume Highway; one of Australia’s busiest road corridors.In order to ensure a safe and efficient construction of the underpass without disruption to the Hume Highway traffic, design of the HHU required specific focus on the prediction and control of ground movements. This paper describes the design and construction solutions adopted in response to these challenging constraints. The relevant characteristic of the evolution of the Pacific continental margin of South America during the Mesozoic-Early Cenozoic has been tectonic segmentation. This has controlled suc-cesive episodes of sedimentary accumula-tion, extrusive and intrusive magmatism and deformation that ocurred at conver-vergent plate edges. During this inter-val, at least three main transverse boundaries played an important role conditioning the existence of paleo-segments of different longitudinal extent at various Periods. These probably correspond to deep-seated faults in the Huancabamba Deflection and at the Arica-Santa Cruz Line; the third boundary projects westward to the Chile Ridge. Tectonic activity appears to have been continous at the Huancabamba Deflection at least since the Triassic. The Arica-Santa Cruz Line was probably an active boundary during the Triassic and Cretaceous; the southernmost boundary may have started to be active at the end of the Jurassic. This tectonic activity has determined the subsidence - uplift and paleogeographic conditions of the paleosegments.

Being the first time such technology has been used in Australia, a large commitment to technical design and logistics planning was given by Callide Coalfields Pty Ltd. This commitment included technical and operations management and supervision, mine services, and the retention of consultants to undertake geotechnical analysis, instrument preparation and instrument installation.

Historical exploration of the Ballarat East goldfield defined two primary quartz vein lode types. Tracking the intersection of these lodes with vertical lines of enrichment (or so-called æindicatorsÆ) was the basic practice for historical mining. This strategy proved highly successful in terms of identifying quartz veins associated with mineralisation. However, it provides little understanding of the timing or processes involved in the formation of these veins, or the associated emplacement of gold. Current underground mapping shows the Ballarat East gold deposit can be subdivided into four stages of vein formation. The earliest veins (V1 and V2) strike north-south and formed during bedding flexural slip and limb thrust fault propagation in parasitic chevron folds. V3 veins are subhorizontal and relate to further fold tightening involving a transition from east-west compression to north-south extension that initiated re-shear of bedded slip surfaces and additional strike-slip faults. Sporadic V4 veins overprint the shallow-dipping sections of V2 and V3 veins and are associated with weak north-south compression. The V4 veins mineralogy is distinguished by a high carbonate content and sphalerite-galena sulfide assemblage. Vein sampling indicates a significant increase in gold mineralisation where overprinting by the later deformation/veining has occurred. As a result of these observations, a new model is emerging that identifies the chronology, structural control and spatial distribution of respective quartz vein types. This is a major advance in terms of exploration targeting, resource modelling and mine planning.

Consumable materials used in mines are often transported to the working areas down shallow angle decline shafts, typically at anywhere between 10¦ and 30¦ to the horizontal. The winding equipment is usually a relatively small single-drum winder and the material is transported in one or more cars, running on rails in the decline. The winding rope is attached directly to the cars, which are mechanically coupled together. For small rock hoisting declines, the cars are replaced with hoppers or skips. The winder is normally of basic design, fitted with only the minimum required safety devices and very elementary brake control. Since these winders are not ælicensedÆ and are usually located in remote areas, the standard of maintenance on the installations is often poor, leading to frequent accidents, resulting in runaways, derailments and broken ropes. These problems can be overcome easily with the application of the rope haulage principle. When large volumes of ore have to be transported to surface, belt conveyors are used on shallow angle inclines, or high-capacity friction winders are used in vertical shafts. Conveyors are limited to inclines no steeper than 14¦ and vertical shafts with large friction or drum type winders are extremely capital-intensive. Rope haulage systems can be used on decline shafts where the inclination is too steep for belt conveyors and too shallow for conventional drum winders. Rope haulage systems also offer a variety of safety, technical and cost advantages over other winding and transport systems. This paper describes the adaptation of the rope haulage principle to modern requirements and, combined with 21st century electronic technology, explains how the principle can be used as an efficient, safe and practical solution to some problems associated with the transport of materials, personnel and ore in mines. The authors describe the designs, methods of operation, safety aspects, automated control, loading and unloading facilities of modern rope haulage systems used for transporting personnel, material and ore. This paper considers a variety of systems already designed for different applications, from small material-only installations to multi-purpose and large rock-hoisting systems with payloads as much as 180 t. It also describes in more detail, a material transporting system recently commissioned in South Africa.

Sticking and breakage of iron ore pellets during high temperature reduction can result in several operational challenges during shaft furnace ironmaking. With the shift to H2-based DRI processes and decreasing iron ore quality, this issue becomes more prominent. It is therefore important to understand how the iron ore chemistry and mineralogy affects the sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. This study provides a review of the mechanisms that lead to sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. The sticking index of pellets is related to the rate of metallic iron production as well as the precipitation morphology of product iron. Sticking of pellets is also enhanced by the formation of low-melting slag phases. The breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace is often associated with the mechanical load of burden and pellet swelling, which is caused due to iron whisker or protruded iron formation. This paper investigates how the composition of iron ore, particularly the presence of different impurity oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and alkali oxides in the pellets, influences the sticking and swelling indices. The effect of ore mineralogy on these adverse behaviours is also discussed.

Structural geological information is widely used at the Mt Whaleback Mine, Newman, WA. Recent improvements in the structural understanding of Mt Whaleback are providing a very cost-effective way of reducing geological risk, improving the economics of mining, optimising pit design and addressing safety problems. The structure of the Mt Whaleback orebody is highly complex and has a significant influence not only on iron ore genesis but also on pit wall stability. A team approach between the Structural Geology and Geomechanics Groups has been providing excellent results to reduce geological risk at Mt Whaleback.
