Western Australia (WA) is currently the world’s largest iron ore producer, and mining of its huge reserves and resources of iron ore has become a critical part of the state’s economy and regional development. Iron ore exports from WA have reached 760 Mt/a, corresponding to shipping more than one Mt per turn-of-the-tide from the state’s ports. The iron ore sector dominates all commodities produced in WA, and in 2016 accounted for 77 per cent of the state’s royalty receipts, 56 per cent of mineral and petroleum exports (by value) and 50 per cent of mining industry employment. Expenditure on exploration for iron ore (including that for resource estimation and conversion to ore reserves) has declined markedly, from its record peak of $1100 M in 2012 to $280 M in 2016, placing it second after gold. Mercury is precipitated from weakly acidic sulphuric acid plant waste liquor at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited. Factors determining the choice of process and reagent, as well as details of process development including scale- up, and the time scale of implementation are outlined. The plant is designed for a maximum flow of 120 m3/h.of liquor containing mercury and saturated with sulphur dioxide. Mercury is precipitated by fluidised beds of aluminium pellets contained in lead columns. Liquor is then clarified with plate and frame presses. Experimental work on the mercury precip- itation reaction was conducted in three phases involving a scale-up of 100 times in equipment size. Extensive pilot filtration work was carried out on a 1 m2 press. Scale-up of 120 times was required for specification of plant filters. The basis of scale-up is outlined.

Extensive reserves of kaolin of the type suitable for use as a high quality paper coating exist on the Weipa Peninsula. In 1986 a commercial processing plant was constructed to produce 100 000 tonnes per annum of coating quality kaolin targetted principally for export. A number of processing difficulties have limited the production capability of the plant. The prime area being the pressure filtration operation with achieved cycle times being around 50-60% of design. The rate determining steps being press filling, press unloading and filter cloth washing. This paper details and summarises testwork and results from our attempts at decreasing the filtration cycle time.

The basic flowsheet for the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter and Kwinana Nickel Refinery are discussed in relation to the mineral components of Kambalda produced nickel concentrates. Both processes handle violarite and pentlandite satisfactorily but the smelter has limitations where high copper recovery is required and in its ability to handle magnesia containing minerals. While the latter can be more economically handled at Kwinana the limitations of this tolerance are discussed together with problems arising from treating pyrrhotite, pyrite and precious metals by the Sherritt Gordon process.

"Morro do Ouro Mine is a high tonnage/low-grade mine located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The mines move around 55 Mt of ore per year at an average grade of 0.4 g/t. The auriferous mineralisation of Morro do Ouro is related to hydrothermal fluids rich in arsenic (As), gold (Au), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn). These percolated along favourable structures contained within phyllites of Upper Proterozoic age and defined a mineralised megaboudin which outcropped with 4 km extension and up to 2 km in width. The litologies in the interior of this structure are typically more deformed, sericitised and sulfidised, and exhibit the development of quartz boudins in the centre of the more deformed zones where are found the higher Au grades and the coarser sulfide crystals. Gold is preferentially associated with arsenopyrite, mainly occurring in fractures or aggregations of crystals and is rarely in solid solution or refractory. Over 90 per cent of the gold contained in the sulfide ore is free or extractable by cyanidisation. The current mineral reserve is 17.9 Mt at 0.403 g/t published at the end of 2012.In order to get a good grade estimation that represents the orebody more accurately a solids methodology was used to distinguish the different orebodies. Before 2011 the orebodies were worked with two domains relating to the weathered mantle. The B1 ore, which is oxidised, is located at the top of mineralisation, and is used to feed Plant 1. Underneath B2 ore, which is fresh sulfide bearing, represents over 30 years of production in Plant 2.In order to improve the predictability of gold grade estimation in geological modelling and to get a better predicting behaviour of each domain on the deposit, studies were carried out in which it was possible to show a correlation between elements and the mineralisation. One strong correlation and spatial distribution between Au and As, As and sulfur (S), Au and Pb, Au and Zn were found.Based on geochemistry, mineral correlations, amount of sulfide, structural deformation, texture of sulfides and the daily experience of the mine, it was possible to create solids that individualised bodies with similar mineralogical and chemical characteristics using the parameters listed above.After 2011, a new modelling concept was proposed and built with 11 different domains, compared with the previous, and with two more parameters: recovery acid neutralised capacity (ANC).Each of these bodies have different behaviours in mineral processing, like flotation and metallurgy. For example, bodies with pyrrhotite bring problems in the flotation, bodies with high arsenic do not recover well, bodies with high As with coarse texture have good recovery, bodies with fine texture do not have good adherence in production.In the present state of knowledge, protocols are being developed for bench testing to predict the recovery of each geochemical domain aiming to include these in the geological model for the parameter recovery. The Mt Lyell Mine, situated in Queenstown on the west coast of Tasmania, has a production history of more than 100 years. Previous mining activities have resulted in substantial modifications to environmental conditions at Mt Lyell and disposal of sulphidic waste rock across the lease has left a legacy of on-going environmental impacts including acid drainage (AD). In 1995 Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) was granted a mining lease Irons the Tasmanian State Government for redevelopment of Mt Lyell and indemnity from actions concerning pollution from previous occupation and use of leased land. The Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Mt Lyell redevelopment committed CMT to be responsible for waste rock dumps generated from their activities and to ensure that management is in-line with best practice environmental management principles. CMT commenced commercial production in December 1995 with sulphidic material from development of the underground Prince Lyell mine reporting to a single waste rock dump constructed according to a management plan developed in July 1995 and superseded by a management plan for extension in May 1997. The CMT waste rock dump currently has a total capacity of 220 000 m- and approximately 120 000 m3 of rock have been placed to-date. Material reporting to the dump is placed in a densely compacted state to a controlled surface profile. The dump is clay capped and a final revegetated soil layer placed on top. A rock pitched drain extends down to a wetland area in order to remove stormwater and minimise possible soil erosion on the revegetated sections. An integral part of the management plan for the waste rock dump involves characterisation of waste rock to identify geochemical rock types according to acid forming potential with provision for selective placement within the dump. High-risk materials are selectively placed and covered within the core of the waste rock dump, where possible, to control sulphide oxidation. Monitoring equipment has been installed in the waste rock dump by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and an on-going monitoring program has been established to demonstrate the integrity of the dump cover as a barrier to the influx of atmospheric oxygen into the dump. The overall objectives of this program of work are to control the oxidation of sulphidic waste rock in the waste rock dump, minimise the risk of AD, prevent pollution of the aquatic environment and thereby demonstrate the integrity of the CMT waste rock dump management Strategy.

A conventional Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system with conveyor transport, mobile tripper and spreader was commissioned at the Goonyella Mine in 1982. The system was introduced to prestrip ahead of dragline excavations and was specified to remove 7.5 million cubic metres per annum in ground somewhat harder than that inwhich bucket wheel excavators are normally operated.This machine has, since 1982, moved more than 77 millionbank cubic metres of material and has been relocated twice. Extensive trials have been undertaken including digging blasted rock.

The Olympic Dam mine utilises 1.1 m to 1.4 m diameter raise bores for generating the initial slot void for most production stopes. Slot raise bores generally span two development levels ranging from 30 m to 50 m in height. Raise bores are reamed upward and typically leave a cap of rock equivalent to two times the raise bore diameter on the drill level (minimum 3 m). This provides safe access over the cap for subsequent production activities. It is therefore critical to ensure robust falling object protection for personnel accessing underneath, and in the vicinity of the raise bore void on the lower level. Recently, a number of mesh failures have occurred at Olympic Dam as a result of falling rock from the underside of the cap and raise walls. In addition, as Olympic Dam transitions to deeper and more challenging ground conditions, rockfall-off onto the raise bore protection mesh is anticipated to increase in frequency. This paper discusses the evolution of raise bore protection mesh used at Olympic Dam and presents results from recent site-based drop testing. This impact testing was carried out using a built for purpose object to replicate point loading and shear failure of mesh wires. Testing was also carried out on an improved mesh design which utilises two layers of Geobrugg high-tensile MINAX mesh. Results from the drop testing suggest an improvement in performance of the raise bore protection mesh is realised with the updated design.

The Emperor vein system lies on the eastern margin of the Tavua volcanic structure. This is of Miocene age and occurs in basalts(the Mba Volcanics) probably underlain at about 2 km by calcite-rich sediments (the Vatukoro Formation). The lodes are generally flatmakes, or steep fault fillings, or complex shatter zones, and consist of quartz and altered wall rock. In areas of open cavities it is possible to establish a paragenesis which involves five quartz stages and two ore mineral stages. The first ore stage contains calaverite, krennerite, sylvanite and native tellurium, the second petzite, hessite and native gold. The quartz stages are thought to have formed slowly (102 years) from boiling solutions of low salinity at temperatures varying with time from about 250¦C to 190¦C. The system was sealed, the temperature gradient near vertical and the mass flux small. The ore mineral stages probably formed relatively rapidly (101years) from boiling solutions at 250¦ to 200¦C when the system was mainly open. Gold deposition was probably largely a result of fall in aH2S due to boiling, the calculated solution concentration falling from a maximum of about 8 ppb at 250¦C to about 8.10-3ppb at 200¦C. Boiling is also probably responsible for an increase in a02 (by loss of H2) and fall in aTe2 (by loss of H2Te). The fluids are thought to have had a large component of meteoric water and to have been heated by plutons in the core of the volcanic structure. Stable isotope data indicate that they derived their carbon from the underlying Vatukoro Formation and their sulphur from sediments. Circulation may have been confined to the outside of the volcanic structure because of the relatively low permeability of the flows, pyroclastics and dykes within it.

The throughput of a HP-roller mill is determined by the acceleration of the feed material within acceleration zone and introduction into the compression zone. Both processes depend on the internal friction and the friction of the material on the roller surface which is influenced by the surface structure and adhering of material. The particle motion in the acceleration zone has been investigated with high speed videos showing the effect of the centrifugal force and the slip on the roller surface. The throughput is discussed in the term of the specific throughput which can be approximated by a linear function characterised by the throughput number and the throughput elasticity. The throughput number is a helpful measure for investigating the influence of the feed material and the surface structure. The experimental results give some guidance for chosing an optimum corrugation profile.

This paper discusses the challenges, solutions and lessons learnt as tunnelling work continues on the Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement (MMSR) project.The MMSR project is a $220 million dollar project for the Melbourne Water Corporation. It involves the construction of approximately 4.2 km of new sewer from the southern fringe of the CBD through the inner metropolitan suburbs of Port Melbourne and South Melbourne.Of the 4.2 km of sewer currently in construction approximately 2.2 km will be constructed using a 2.95 m diameter Lovat EPB tunnel boring machine (TBM) with approximately 1.9 km of small diameter (300 to 600 mm) reticulation sewers constructed using trenchless techniques.These sewers are being constructed in a dense urban environment, which means that the tunnels and shafts are often in close proximity to buildings and structures. The underground constructionof the sewer is further complicated by the variable geology of the ancient Yarra River delta which includes weathered basalts, the infamous Coode island silt formation and fine loose sands.Some of the key challenges and lessons learnt so far during construction include:· steering and alignment control of the TBM through very soft silt with little residual strength,· development and refinement of a monitoring and alarm system for leaving the machine dormant on a day works only project,· control and measurement of tunnel lining defl ection during ring build and grouting,· prediction and monitoring of surface settlements during tunnel excavation,· improved understanding of the geology and hydrogeology at this previously unchartered area of Melbourne,· consolidation settlement due to dewatering at shafts required careful construction controls, and· ground support and excavation in close proximity to the existing 110 year old sewer which requiredvery detailed risk control measures.

The design of mine openings and the assessment of their reserve are processes ihicl, require the routine manipulation of considerable amounts of data. A number of computer programs have been assembled to operate in a mini computer in order to provide some mechanical assistance for these processes. The system responds to plain language commands. which allows mining engineers to compute the reserves for a number of possible mining outlines, on an interactive basis. Methods of numerical analysis were used in preference to statistical or qeostatistical techniques.

The flotation behaviour of the Hilton ore of Mount Isa Mines has been examined in the presence of two collectors (sodium ethyl xanthate (Ex) and sodium diisobutyldithiophosphinate (3418A)) over a range of flotation Eh values and collector additions. Tests were also conducted in the absence of collector to determine the relative contributions of natural and self-induced floatability of the major minerals in the feed. In these tests the influence of metabisulphite on the self-induced floatability of the minerals was also determined. Attention focussed on optimising the selectivity of galena flotation. It is shown that the Hilton ore sample contained lower levels of naturally hydrophobic iron sulphide minerals than are generally contained in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Furthermore, the self-induced floatability of galena was less than that exhibited by the galena in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore. Sodium metabisulphite (MBS) reduced the self-induced flotation of galena but had no effect on the natural floatability of the iron sulphide minerals.

Gunpowder Copper Limited processes 1,000 tonne/day of Mammoth ore in a conventional flot- ation concentrator. Run of mine ore is prepared for flotation by three stages of crushing and two stages of ball milling. The concentrate, in which the primary copper mineral is chalcocite, is solar dried and exported to Japan. The history of operation is summarised, and plant practice and metallurgical problems are discussed.

The Early Proterozioc Pine Creek Geosyncline hosts a large number of gold showings. Mineralisation types include stratiform, synsedimentary deposits within iron formation and carbonaceous mudstone; disseminations in granophyric intrusives; and quartz vein related concentrations in the form of shear fillings, saddle reefs and stockworks. Stratiform gold deposits preferentially formed near penecontemporareous faults during periods of basin instability. Intrusive basic magmas later assimilated some stratiform mineralisation and subsequently redeposited it within differentiated phases. Gold was again remobilized during regional deformation and metamorphism. Stratiform mineralisation was upgraded insitu in high strain zones and gold was mobilized into metamorphic fluids. Fluid induced fracturing during prograde metamorphism and later uplift caused the deposition of extensive gold rich vein systems. The genetic relationship between gold deposit types is reflected in the clustering of showings along regional anticlines, and provides a powerful exploration tool. The large volume of 'exhalative'òmaterial in the Geosyncline with elevated gold content suggests significant economic stratiform mineralisation may be present, and probably provides a source for later disseminated and vein deposits.

In Japan, geological condition do not only vary in a wide range of strata but are also extremely complex with the existence of faults and aquifers. With respect to rocks, in particular, it is very rare that homogeneous rocks are distributed uniformly. In general, geological conditions are distributed in a wide variety, ranging from earth, sand, soft and medium rocks to hard rocks. Under these geological conditions, when planning of the tunnel construction is to be made out, either blasting method or tunnel boring machines must be selected taking into consideration the geological structures along with the designed tunnel route,' possibility of encountering aquifers, hardness of rocks anticipated and also, the adjacent environ- mental conditions. In the process of select- ing an excavation method,, it is important to make a comparative investigation between the above two methods considering the advantages and disadvantages with regard to the respective operating efficiency, economical efficiency and the conditions and scope of application as well. Furthermore, in addition to these considerations, the recent environmental restriction, which does not allow the blasting in the surroundings of residential areas, must also be taken into account. Because of this, in some cases there is no alternative but to use a static excavation method or a tunneling machine even when these are less efficient than blasting.

The following engineering aspects associated with the decision to introduce electric L.H.D.'s are considered here: - Initial requirements for commissioning, including power reticulation at an adequate level to all operating areas. - Conversion of a manual system to radio remote control. - Maintenance backup requirement to ensure that the production potential is realised.

During late 1953 and early 1954, tests were carried out in Sydney metropolitan brickpits in order to determine if some improvement might not be effected in the personal shock, fly rock and possible ground displacement accompanying daily blasting occurrences in the numerous quarrying activities of the metropolitan area. As a result of this preliminary work (Reid, 1954), the Department of Mines decided to further investigate the problem with a view to placing this type of blasting on a sound economical and safe basis for both operator and nearby residents alike. To assist in the work, a Cambridge Universal vibrograph was acquired.Human safety was the first consideration followed by property damage to homes and factories in the extractive areas. Although most of the actual field work has been confined to the Sydney metropolitan area and in particular to the large clay-shale quarries, many cities and country towns have blasting problems associated with the extractive industries, engineering projects both above and below ground level, and in building excavations to which the results may apply.The following figures illustrate how much activity of this type is located around cities and towns:Sydney Metropolitan Area:
