For all mineral resource-based companies, it is important to reach the right balance of investment between acquisition and exploration to allow the best chance of achieving long-term corporate goals. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) provides an excellent example of success from generative exploration and supports the belief that exploration can be justified, not only in terms of investment criteria, but also because it is essential to a company wishing to build a dynamic profitable growth path based on world-class deposits as cheaply as possible. BHP was incorporated in 1885 to mine a lead/zinc/silver discovery at Broken Hill. The Company has since gone through a steel development phase (1911-1965) and is now in a major phase of growth partly based on exploration success. This third phase was marked by decisions taken in the 1950's to search actively for mineral and energy resources above and beyond the requirements of the steel industry. The commercial successes of this period have been Bass Strait oil and gas, Groote Eylandt manganese, Deepdale iron ore, Gregory coal and Carnilya East nickel. In total at least 22 new resource discoveries have been made in the last 25 years, of which 11 have been developed and several are undergoing feasibility studies. A financial analysis shows that the real value of the returns seeded by discovery covers the real exploration cost many times over. Moreover, the major discoveries have had a spectacular impact on the growth and development of the Company. BHP's present exploration effort is directed towards geological targets which most frequently meet attractive financial criteria and also promote diversification from steel-related earnings.

SIROFRAG is a computer-based imaging system that quantifies the post-blast rock fragment size distribution in a muckpile in a mine environment. Improvements in blast performance and blast modelling are being hampered by a lack of a quick and objective method to evaluate the major result of the blast: the fragment size distribution. This is usually done by hand digitising muckpile photographs: a labour intensive and tedious process. SIROFRAG is being developed to quickly, cheaply and objectively provide this information. SIROFRAG is based on active stereo image analysis. It uses a light stripe to illuminate a muckpile and a pair of video cameras to determine the 3D nature of the scanned objects. The imaging system is based on a novel prototype scanning projector that allows images to he captured in full daylight. The Microsoft Windows based software controls the projector and interprets the captured images to provide a size distribution of exposed rock fragments.

The underwriting of professional negligence has proved to be an evolving science. As with most insurance products coverage offered in the past was very broad but as legal precedent demonstrated to Insurers areas of unforeseen exposure policy documents per se have become more restrictive until today the insurance market through attrition have produced a basic policy structure with various purchasable extensions which together provide insuring professionals with coverage that has proved to be adequate for their needs. The basic policy provides indemnity and protection for fortuitous negligence. In a practical sense, however, professional indemnity policies are really a defence document in so far as policy holders are relying upon the expertise of Insurers to protect them in the event that a claim is made upon them. Whether damages are awarded is in many respects a secondary consideration, the most important factor is to ensure that policy holders are protected in terms of the legal defence mechanism. By way of illustration we are currently in the process of defending a large professional firm which purchased from us a policy with a limit of indemnity of $10M. The case has been running in a Supreme Court now for 14 months and the defence costs which we have incurred on their behalf are rising close to $8M as I put pen to paper. Defence costs of that magnitude would in effect terminally cripple all but the very largest professional operations in Australia. In more recent times coverage has been provided in Australia for breaches of the Trade Practices Act and similar legislation enacted in various States. No-one really appreciated the comprehensive impact which the Trade Practices Act would have on commerce in Australia. Most professionals thought that indeed they would be exempt from prosecution under this Act. The passage of time has clearly indicated that this is not the case and we have found that it is much more difficult to defend a claim involving breaches of the Trade Practices Act than it would be to defend a claim for breach of tortuous liability.

Mass mining methods have become the mining industry’s preferred way of extracting most of the world’s most important metal and mineral commodities. Given the rapidly increasing global demand for commodities, the requirement to increase the contribution of some of these (eg copper and gold) from underground sources also continues to grow. In the case of copper this contribution is needed by a number of major producers to supplement production from their ageing deep open pits. Satisfying this increased demand will require the design, construction and operation of more effective, higher capacity and larger scale mines which, in turn, will require enhanced mass underground mining techniques such as block caving (BC), panel caving (PC) and sublevel caving (SLC).It is now widely accepted that future discoveries of orebodies, which will be developed using these methods, are almost certainly to be much deeper than the deposits presently being mined in this way and made more challenging because of the likelihood that the associated grades may be much lower than currently mined. The design and mining of future large-scale cave mines (supercaves) will become crucial in order to extract full value from such deposits. An essential prerequisite of this will be a much improved knowledge of the deposit, ie Total Deposit Knowledge. In this context, Total Deposit Knowledge is the characterisation of the ore deposit and its surrounds at all scales and includes; rock type (lithology), the spatial orientation of a range of geological features or discontinuities, rock mass fabric knowledge, metal grade and distribution data, geometallurgical data (including alteration), geo-hydrology, permeability and porosity. This is the information that will be used, as now, to delineate geological and geotechnical domains and construct models, but with outcomes superior to those presently available. From this information better-informed feasibility study design decisions and performance predictions must be made. In summary more geological information and analysis is required and this needs to be aligned to potential mining and processing requirements much earlier in the project than commonly occurs.

AT Broken Hill, N.S.W., where flotation is tbe final stage in concentration, the gangue minerals are discharged as an aqueous pulp, and water recovery from the pulp being essential, provision must be made for the clisposal of the solids and for the return of the clear water to the cemcentrating mill circuit. This water also contains an appreciable quantity of flotation reagents, and is more effective for flotation than supply water.In the development of a scheme for the disposal of large quantities of residues, several of the more important factors for consideration are:(a) Tonnage to be handled.(b) Grain size of residues and pulp density.(c) Dewatering of residues and return of clear water to mill circuit.(d) Possible uses of residues.-A varying proportion of sand residues is used for underground filling, and to a limited extent for yoncrete making and other engineering work.(e) Choice of a suitable dumping area. - Before deciding upon this area consideration will be given to possible future operations so that the dump will not be likely to interfere with any development which may be necessary. This paper is an outgrowth of a continuing compilation of the geology of Chilean ore deposits by Carlos Ruiz who was the author in 1965 of Geologia y Yacimientos Metaliferos de Chile which was the definitive compilation of the ore deposits of Chile. A new version was written by him in 1988, with the co-operation of Federico Peebles L, published in Geologia, Distribucion y Genesis de los Yacimientos Metaliferos Chilenos. Over the past eight years J David Lowell studied the geology of the Chilean mineral belts in connection with planning mineral exploration for copper and gold.

As the search for major orebodies continues, the regolith dominated areas of the Broken Hill region remain one of the major exploration frontiers. The past exploration philosophies emphasising bedrock related characteristics have been limited in their ability to effectively explore in the regolith dominated areas, that are a feature of most of the Broken Hill region (Figure 1). If mineral exploration is to be more effective across all of the Broken Hill region, particularly in the regolith dominated areas, an appreciation and increased understanding of the regolith and landscape features are a necessity. Ironically, there have been very few studies of the regional regolith and landscape features of this region. Owing to the previous lack of an established regolith-landform framework, this study initially concentrated on the general characterisation and variation in regolith types corresponding to the area of the Broken Hill Block, within NSW (Willis, 1989; Stevens, 1986). The approach has been to produce a regional regolith-landform map at 1:100 000 scale and conduct a complimentary program of regolith sampling and site descriptions. This was a basis to identify areas for more detailed regolith-landform mapping (1:25 000 scale) and for producing a regional stratigraphic framework and models for landscape and regolith evolution. This information can then be used to provide a basis for regional mineral exploration models and strategies. This paper highlights some of the regionally significant regolith-landform features and their general significance to mineral exploration. More detailed information on specific regolith-landform features and study sites may be found in Hill et al (1994; 1996; in press) and Hill (in prep).

While water represents a major proportion of the mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits, relatively little research effort has been committed to understanding and controlling the influence of water quality on this process. Historically, this probably stems from the perception of water as an inert transport medium. However, the changing attitude towards water as a valuable resource, has given impetus to increasing requirements to use relatively impure make-up water supplies such as treated effluents and a high proportion of internally recycled water. In turn, this has resulted in the need for a more detailed focus on process water quality and its control to minimise adverse effects on sulfide flotation. Along these lines, prior to commissioning of a new concentrator at their Cadia Hill Gold Mine, Newcrest Mining was proactive in examining potential water sources and the influence of water quality on flotation of their copper/gold bearing ore. An extensive water quality survey of all major potential water supplies to the concentrator was undertaken. The flotation performance of the Cadia ore in each of these waters was investigated on a laboratory scale. The results of these studies identified that water quality could indeed have a significant influence on the flotation process. Since operations at the Cadia Hill concentrator began, water quality surveys of both make-up water sources and recycled flotation circuit waters have been carried out on a regular basis. By doing this, a database of water quality has been established which can be compared with plant performance. In parallel with the water quality surveys, a series of laboratory flotation tests have been conducted using a standard ore and waters from various streams to monitor changes in flotation performance as a function of water quality. These tests have indicated that certain water types may have a significant influence on plant performance. More research is required to better understand the impact of water quality on sulfide flotation. This understanding will help operators to minimise adverse effects, while maintaining the best utilisation of available water resources.

The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. Although Western Mining Corporation has been producing high grade nickel ore at Kambalda since 1967, it has only recently become a significant gold producer.The main source of Gold ore has been the Victory Gold Mine located 17 kilometres South of Kambalda.This mine produced small tonnages of high grade gold ore from a sediment horizon within a complex sequence of mafic flows, in the 1890's, early 1900's and 1930's.Today, mining is centred around 2 com-pletely different ore bodies named Victory and Defiance, and involves several different mining methods. This paper describes the Operation's history and gives an outline of the proposed stoping methods.

Backfill in the form of mine waste tailings has inherent problems associated with attaining adequate strengths upon placement. Fines are usually removed to ensure adequate drainage, which lowers the cohesive strength of the fill, leaving the fines to he placed in a tailings darn. Electro-drainage and electro-chemical grouting is examined to investigate its effects on densification and shear strength within a silty clay tailing having low permeability and shear strength. Two separate grouting mechanisms are observed for the iron and silica grouts used. Electro- osmosis is associated with iron grout that deposits within the tailing matrix under a converging pH gradient, and increases the permeability of the tailing. This process initiates cation exchange and causes cementing of the granular contact points between the clays. Electro-phoresis causes sodium silicate solution to deposit silica grout in the voids of the tailings. The resultant effect of these mechanisms results in an increase in cohesion, leaving the void ratio of the iron grouted tailings as it was but significantly reducing the void ratio of the silica grouted tailings.

"Decision-making in mining is a challenging task. Optimal decisions regarding shovel and truck allocations, aligned with the optimal short-term production schedules, are crucial in keeping the operations in line with the company’s long-term objectives. In this paper, we present two main modelling components as the means to achieve near-optimal operational plans: a mixed integer linear goal programming model to allocate trucks and shovels to mining faces over a shift-by-shift basis so that operating costs are minimised and resource utilisations are maximised through the planning horizon a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the behaviour of a truck-and-shovel haulage system in the presence of uncertainty within mining operations. The goals integrated into the mathematical model are to: maximise production minimise deviations from the target head grade minimise deviations in tonnage feed to the processing plants from the desired feed minimise operating cost.The mathematical model provides shovel assignments and the target productions as an input to the discrete event simulation model while meeting the desired goals and constraints of the mining operation. We illustrate the applications of the discrete event simulation model by presenting a large-scale oil sands case study. BHP Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations use a suite of slope monitoring systems which are deployed to operational areas based on the ground control risk. Slope Radars are one system used within WAIO, having recently deployed and integrated a network of 22 radar systems across the operations. The integration required the development of supporting network architecture, infrastructure, virtualised hosting, security protocols and a technology support model. This has enabled data transfer between the physical radar systems located in open pits, to on-site offices, a vendor supported remote control room in Indonesia and the WAIO Integrated Remote Operations Centre for data analysis and monitoring of system and displacement alarms 24/7. The typical technical skillset of a Geotechnical Engineer does not include the knowledge and capability to understand and develop the supporting IT infrastructure required for establishing an integrated radar monitoring network. This paper will provide a discussion of the technology considerations for integrating radar systems and highlight the importance of the developed partnerships between internal geotechnical and technology teams and the external vendor team to ensure a reliable, robust and scalable slope monitoring solution.

The paper describes developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the demand for higher outputs of overburden and coal under less favourable batter conditions than used hitherto in the coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of these flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use of models inthese studies. An explanation is given of how solution of these problems and surface conditions unfavourable for wheeled transport confirmed selection of the long boom rather than the compact type of bucket wheel excavator for the Latrobe Valley applications.The past decade has seen advances in the manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The history of Australian manufacture of components for major brown coal excavators is traced;and reference is made to study and application of Australian and overseas (mainly German) codes and practices in the design and construction of machines made partly here and partly in Germany.A section of the paper deals with advances in electrical engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependence with mechanical design and construction.Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator, a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in northern N.S.W.

High-water rapid-solidifying material, called æhigh-water materialÆ, is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of backfill body, environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

On the southern flank of Lihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000-1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction- modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

THE objective of the iron smelter is naturally the production of high quality iron at the lowest practicable cost. To enable this, large tonnages are put through the blast furnace, and, at the same time, the quality of the iron must be under definite control.The modern blast furnace enables these objectives to be attained. The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Following the Greeks, the Romans excelled in its extraction and uses in the manufacture of their instruments of war, and to this fact can largely be attributed the success of their many wars of conquest. "The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. One of the main factors affecting the suitability of an ore for autogenous grinding is the ore’s competency, ie providing enough critical stones for the grinding process. Several experimental test routines exist and are used for assessing the viability of the ore for autogenous grinding. However, very little attention is given to the generation of fatigue in large stones experiencing repeated shocks in the mill. To investigate this, large pebbles sampled from an industrial autogenous grinding mill running hard and soft ores were categorised based on the grinding energy. From the pebbles, small drill core samples were prepared and went through a series of fatigue cycle tests. Both hard and soft ores showed similar average resistance to failure in compression tests, but the hard ore had a consistent resistance with lower variations. The cores were scanned by XCT before and in-between fatigue tests at the highest reachable resolution, 1.5 µm voxel size. The outcome showed that a higher number of micro-cracks were visible in the soft ore compared to the hard ore. The frequency of micro-crack development in the soft ore may be the reason for its lower specific grinding energy compared to the hard ore. It is obvious that for realistic conditions in an autogenous grinding mill, stones are pre-weakened by fatigue before they fracture. Therefore, shortcut methods focusing only on running tests on fresh and small samples may operate in unrealistic conditions by ignoring the fatigue phenomenon. This is even more important for ores that are on the borderline to be considered as competent for autogenous milling.

Scheelite was floated from a low-grade (0.28 per cent W03) calcitic (96.30 per cent CaCO3) scheelite ore using oleoyl sarcosine as collector and alkylated 8-hydroxyquinoline as modifier. Compared to oleoyl sarcosine alone, the grade and the recovery of scheelite concentrate were increased from 8.07 per cent to 33.54 per cent and from 55.1 per cent to 73.4 per cent, respectively. Infrared studies with pure calcite and scheelite minerals showed that while alkyl oxine is adsorbed on the scheelite surface, it is not adsorbed on the calcite.
