A new high intensity flotation process 'FASTFLOT' is explained and its theoretical advantages compared with other flotation systems are discussed. The results of initial FASTFLOT testing on the zinc roughing circuit at Pasminco Mining, Broken Hill South concentrator are presented and compared to recent plant data. The comparison suggests that on roughing duties, the FASTFLOT process yields superior concentrate grade while requiring less than one third the residence time of a conventional mechanical cell plant. Strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also presented.

Following the recent tailings tragedy in Brumadinho, the Investor Mining and Tailings Safety Initiative was formed representing institutional investors in the mining industry. This Initiative, led by The Church of England (CoE), requested data from 726 mining companies on each of their Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). What this exercise confirmed was that there was no public database of TSFs, and that there was a clear gap in tailings management systems within the disclosing companies. We present an approach using technology to support best practice TSF management, governance and disclosure which was originally submitted as part of University of Cambridge Post-graduate studies in Sustainability Leadership in January 2020. The aim of the paper is to discuss how technology could be used to deliver a Tailings Management Solution (TMS) that is aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), and supports rigorous governance leading to disclosure. Subsequently the goals of the plan are aligned with that of the co-conveners of the GISTM (the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)) which is to facilitate operators’ trajectory towards zero harm to people and the environment. Most of the focus to date around tailings management post Brumadinho has been on monitoring technologies, of which there are many. It is obviously important to acknowledge the critical role of monitoring technologies; however, our approach is agnostic to monitoring technologies and assumes that all of them are relevant. Our focus is on the data management, reporting and governance leading to disclosure of the information. Critical components of developing the TMS include adapting existing software products and solutions, recognising a system thinking approach is needed, strategic partnerships to deliver an accessible solution faster and more cost effectively, and, new ways of collaborating. The TMS should also accommodate relevant regional geotechnical codes and standards. The industry need for a TMS is well established and urgent, with significant pressure from regulators and civil society for the industry to address this significant issue.

Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

Black Rock Cave (BRC) is a sublevel cave which was developed in 2018–2020 and has been in production since November 2020. BRC is part of the Mount Isa Mines complex and extracts a leached orebody comprising of high-grade chalcocite ore, situated below the historic Black Rock Open Cut workings. The mine is owned by Mount Isa Mines and operated under contract with PYBAR Mining Services. In 2021 a number of rockfalls occurred throughout the mine and were increasing in frequency. This culminated in a major rockfall on the decline in June 2021, after which the decision was made to withdraw all persons from the mine, initiate rehabilitation and conduct further investigations to deduce a safe method to provide long-term support. The rockfall investigations have shown that the corrosive nature of the highly leached rock mass can consume a split set in less than 18 months. A review of potential corrosion resistant ground support methods concluded that steel split sets have a safe lifespan of six months at BRC, and that all workings must have corrosion resistant support installed prior to exceeding the safe life of the friction bolts. The review recommended the use of 4 m cable bolts as the most suitable method of corrosion resistant support. This new support system, and the requirement to rehabilitate all mine workings within the leached orebody, had an impact to the schedule and an effect on both equipment and manning levels at BRC. Accelerated jumbo rehab allowed access to the production levels within two months of the rockfall. Cable bolting then followed the jumbo bolting in all leached areas. The direct impact has been ten months of reduced production, due to night shift closures of the decline to enable cable bolting. The impact to the mine has been minimised by the small flexible team that enabled the mine plan to change rapidly and often to accommodate the challenging conditions. In less than two months from the rockfall event, production had resumed. Within ten months of concluding that the mine required; full rehabilitation, a new support system and a full re-schedule, normal mining operations had restarted, with pre-event productions rates being achieved.

For too long we, as an industry, have borne the brunt of irrational claims, poor science and even worse, journalism with regards to our affect on the environment. To some of us, the overwhelming media attention on greenhouse warming, the polluting outputs of mineral processing or unthinkable depletion of natural resources has left us embarrassed and more unfortunately has turned bright young people away from a career in the minerals industry.This paper shows the hypocrisy associated with an element of the green movement and dispels some general myths on mining disseminated by radical environmentalists.The fallacy of the greenhouse warming effect will be scrutinised by common sense and the mining industryÆs use of land will be discussed and put in proper perspective.Problems associated with safety and emissions and the means to overcome such are discussed briefly.

One of the greatest practical difficulties of measuring airblast occurs when a significant wind is blowing onto the microphone. Small windscreens are usually used to mitigate the wind noise on the microphone, but in some wind conditions, sound pressure levels (SPL) of over 120 decibel (linear) are frequently recorded. There are no specific procedures to mitigate the effect of wind noise when measuring airblast in any of the standards or guidelines pertaining to the measurement of airblast from blasting operations, other than the requirement to use an effective windscreen. A search for relevant literature was undertaken and measurements were taken over a period of six months at a test site using alternative microphone measurement methods. Previous researchers’ experiments with windscreens in silenced wind tunnels showed that wind noise can be reduced through the use of large diameter windscreens, and that at low frequencies, the windscreen size and the material type makes no difference to measured SPL values. Other researchers found that wind turbulence caused significant SPL measurement problems. A comparison with field data failed to explain the extremely high SPL recorded by the field microphones at wind velocities much lower than those used in wind tunnel testing. It has been concluded that turbulent airflow over and behind the microphone is a significant contributor to extraneous noise in airblast measurements in windy conditions. This turbulence can be generated by objects upwind of the microphone or by the microphone itself if the windscreen is ineffective. Reducing the wind speed over the microphone by placing it on the ground is the approach required by the international standard for the measurement of noise from wind turbine generators (IEC 61400–11). This paper presents data that illustrates the extent of the problem, reports on the trial of three different microphone mounting locations for measuring airblast from blasting and concludes that in windy conditions, microphones placed on the ground substantially avoid wind problems and do not reduce the measured SPL of the airblast.CITATION:Henley, K, 2015. A method of selective gold recovery from black sands has been elaborated which is based on the liquid phase low temperature chlorination of materials. A liquid agent mixture of sulphur monochloride S2C12 and sulphur dichloride SC12 is used. This method ensures the gold extraction either in the state of AuC13.SC14 complex salt solution or as metal. The kinetics and main physico-chemical parameters of the process (eg density, solid: liquid ratio, temperature) have been investigated. The materials investigated were quartz-insipid ride samples with low sulphur and high iron (up to 70 per cent Fe2O3) contents. Gold recovery is 96 - 99 per cent at temperatures not exceeding 100¦C. Most of the associated minerals remain in the cake. To obtain metallic gold, the resulting solution of the AuC13.SC14 salt after leaching is reduced by hydrazine with subsequent annealing. The elaborated method is remarkable for small energy expenditures owing to low process temperature and a high gold dissolution rate. The solution of sulphur chlorides and other reagents are used in closed cycle.

Sun Metals Corporation Pty Ltd (SMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KZC) is a company formed to develop, construct and operate a zinc refinery, 11 km south of Townsville in North Queensland. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

The discovery since 1990 of four major orebodies in the Mt Isa Inlier - Century Zn-Pb, Osborne Cu-Au, Cannington Pb-Zn and Ernest Henry Cu-Au - only serves to enhance the already high stature of the Inlier in world mining importance. Currently the known mineral resources of the Inlier represent about 11 per cent of the world's Pb-Zn resources, five per cent of the world's Ag resources, and one per cent of the world's Cu resources. More can be expected to be added to these impressive figures given that two-thirds of the Inlier remains obscured by younger cover. Individually, projects such as Century and Cannington may ultimately achieve `world's best' status; Century's proposed production of 450 000 tpa of Zn metal would rank it close to number one with Cominco's expanded Red Dog project in Alaska. Cannington, with projected production of 660 tpa Ag, could become the world's biggest producer of silver. For comparison, Mt Isa produced 170 000 t of zinc metal and 335 t of silver in 1995. The apparent physical diversity of deposits in the Mt Isa Inlier is matched by a great diversity of opinion as to their origins. Because Ernest Henry is hosted by `porphyries', it is described by some as a porphyry copper deposit, despite mineralisation age possibly post-dating volcanic age by 200 Ma. Cannington Pb-Zn could be a Broken Hill-type (BHT) exhalitive deposit, or a late epigenetic replacement `regional skarn'. Mt Isa - Hilton Pb-Zn deposits appear to have experienced all deformational events and he syn-diagenetic in origin, or may have experienced little of the above and be epigenetic replacement deposits formed late in the major Isan orogeny, some 150 Ma after deposition.

Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. Trojan Nickel Mine is the largest producer of Ni, Cu and Co in Zimbabwe. The mine has operated a nickel flotation concentrator and base metal refinery continuously since 1969, creating 28 million tonnes of sulfide bearing tailings, five million tonnes of permanent waste rock and about seven million tonnes of smelter slag. Exposure of the sulfide bearing minerals renders them susceptible to oxidation in the presence of water and oxygen, resulting in acidic solutions with elevated concentrations of total dissolved solids, sulfate, metals and residual flotation chemicals in various waters draining from the mine site. These pollutants pose a direct threat to the environment and human health, and understanding their deportment and behaviour in the various waste streams is essential in the mineÆs environmental objectives to prevent or minimise adverse impacts arising from its operations. A geochemical assessment of the pollutants was carried out to compute a mass balance between the major sources of pollution and the distribution and fate of pollutants in waste streams from the mine site. Waste rock, tailings, surface water, ground water and sediments were sampled, tested and analysed. Mineral composition and water chemistry data show that geochemical reactions are responsible for the release of pollutants from waste rock, tailings and plant spills. Drainage from the mine area is near neutral due to buffering by magnesium carbonates in the fine fraction of the tailings. The natural wetlands that exist downstream of the waste rock and tailings dams are effective in reducing metal loadings to water courses. However, solutes and heavy metals are occasionally released to surface and ground water, when their concentrations peak during the dry season. The results demonstrate the necessity to understand the natural chemical processes that characterise the distribution of pollutants in nature and how such knowledge can be used to develop cost effective methods to remediate pollution in the natural environment.

The extraction of gold and silver from chalcopyrite concentrates has been investigated. In view of the recent interest in non-cyanide leachants for gold and silver, one such alternative reagent, namely thiourea, has been employed in the present work. Precious metal leaching was attempted from received copper concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates. Pre-oxidation of the concentrates was carried out by three different methods, namely roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. After pre-oxidation and leaching of the base metals, the leach residues were subjected to further leaching for precious metal extraction. The results obtained on the extraction of gold and silver from received concentrates as well as pre-oxidised concentrates are presented and the effectiveness of the three pre-oxidation routes employed is compared.

The Golden Mile, which has been mined continuously for the past 100 years by both underground and more recently open pit methods, occupies an area of 1.2 km by 4 km adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia (Figure 1). Large-scale open pit mining at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operations is currently extracting 7.8 million tonnes of oxide and sulphide ore for a total production of 522 000 oz per annum. The effectiveness of grade estimation techniques at KCGM has been examined with reference to existing 10 m bench sample data from all operating areas within the Eastern Lode System of the Main and North pits. The aim of the study was to recommend practical parameters for grade control estimation. The review included comprehensive variography and comparison of nonparametric estimation methods (Joumel, 1983) such as indicator kriging and probability kriging with ordinary kriging, leading to the development of improved grade control parameters and procedures for both daily quality control and short term mine planning. This paper reviews the geological, statistical, geostatistical, mining and modelling features studied in order to present KCGM's Mining Department with recommendations for improving grade control.

As a project moves through the mine life cycle, the quantity of data available increases and the understanding of the orebody matures. Incorporating new information quickly and efficiently in current 3D models, is essential for adding value across the life-of-mine value chain. At the Martabe Gold Mine, the resource development group manages 14 drill rigs on six resource projects, including three operating mines. The Martabe deposits are geologically complex and the volume of new information that becomes available each day is substantial. It is imperative that new geological and assay information is integrated into the 3D models as soon as possible, so that drill planning and targeting can be modified accordingly. Martabe uses Leapfrog<sup>®</sup> 3D software to update and interrogate the 3D models on a dynamic basis as data becomes available. This results in faster and more effective changes to drill planning and schedules. The impact of this is better drill productivity and cost savings due to optimal drill targeting, and availability of up-to-date models incorporating the most current data. The mining industry faces concurrent pressures of reducing water use, energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in coming years. However, the interactions between water and energy use, as well as GHG emissions have largely been neglected in modelling studies to date. In addition, investigations tend to focus on the unit operation scale, with little consideration of whole-of-site or regional scale effects.This paper presents an application of a hierarchical systems model (HSM) developed to represent water, energy and GHG emissions fluxes at scales ranging from the unit operation, to the site level, to the regional level. The model allows for the linkages between water use, energy use and GHG emissions to be examined in a flexible and intuitive way, so that mine sites can predict energy and emissions impacts of water use reduction schemes and vice versa. This paper examines whether this approach can also be applied to the regional scale with multiple mine sites.The model is used to conduct a case study of several coal mines in the Bowen Basin, Australia, to compare the utility of centralised and decentralised mine water treatment schemes. The case study takes into account geographical factors (such as water pumping distances and elevations), economic factors (such as capital and operating cost curves for desalination treatment plants) and regional factors (such as regionally varying climates and associated variance in mine water volumes and quality).The case study results indicate that treatment of saline mine water incurs a trade-off between water and energy use in all cases. However, significant cost differences between centralised and decentralised schemes can be observed in a simple economic analysis. Coal Mining machinery has undergone enormous changes in design and complexity of controls in the past 10 years. Specialised, high productivity equipment has been manufactured in Australia, in sufficient volume, to satisfy the local mullet needs.Local manufacturers face greater challenges from overseas competition, as well as increased customer demands to improve machine performance, productivity, quality, reliability and safety. In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.

The Indonesian province of Papua is a remote jungle-clad region covering the western half of the mountainous island of New Guinea. Despite being relatively under-explored to this day,Papua is home to the greatest mineral success story of the 20th century. The Grasberg/Ertsberg minerals district atop the central dividing range contains the worldÆs largest reserve of both copper and gold (Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, 2002). With large mines at Ok Tedi,Por gera and Lihir,and many well-delineated resources such as Frieda River,Wafi and Hidden Valley, neighbouring Papua New Guinea,the eastern half of New Guinea has enjoyed sustained exploration campaigns for gold and copper since the mid 1960s. The combined Grasberg and PNG exploration successes can be measured in terms of ounces of gold produced over the last decade versus available landmass,conf irming the island of New Guinea and surrounding islands as a world-class destination for gold explorers. Yet despite this obvious regional prospectivity and the profitability of the Grasberg operation, a sustained exploration effort in the Papua province in Indonesia has not been achieved. Periodic political constraints, poor infrastructure, high costs, operational challenges, social and environmental concerns and lack of immediate exploration success often impact exploration investment decisions. Accordingly a lesser number of mineral occurrences have been documented in Papua compared to those seen along tectonic strike in geologically similar Papua New Guinea.
