Establishing a robust geotechnical instrumentation and construction monitoring plan is one of the keys to the successful delivery of the world’s largest soft-ground bored tunnel in Seattle, Washington. The paper describes and provides a return of experience on current and best practice for monitoring tunnelling projects in urban areas. The owner’s contractual approach is discussed to highlight the flexibility of the design-built contract in achieving equal or better solutions by allowing for the use of innovative technics. Special attention is given to the management and involvement of third parties (building owners, utility owners), including the public, to overcome all challenges faced during the installation of the monitoring system in downtown Seattle for over 1000 instruments. Companies all over the world are very sensitive concerning their IT and network security. In most network connected technical installations and machines however, network security is not taken into account to a significant extent: insecure protocols are run, unencrypted information is exchanged freely and even broadcasted wirelessly and networked machines are accessible via insecure file transfer protocol (FTP).What happens in case of malfunctions of such technical installations? Who is responsible? Who can be held liable in case of accidents? The first computer worm for automation systems (æSTUXNETÆ) (Symantec, 2010) was discovered during 2010.The paper is intended to create sensitivity among decision makers for potential security and resulting safety leaks and points out the current status quo in technical network security. It outlines best practices for secure networking and procedures for remote access and remote software updates on stationary equipment and mobile mining machinery. It describes how to ensure authentic and genuine configurations and software targets and how to ensure secure communication for autonomous and remote controlled equipment. For such equipment in particular, the following statement should apply: æThere is no safety without network securityÆ.

The Bottle Creek mine, when opened next month, will consist of three open cuts, Emu, VB and Boags, feeding ore to a central mill. The open cuts cover a strike length of 4.5 kilometres which forms part of a linear structure, which can be traced geochemically for 26.0 kilometres. With the exception of a few small gossanous outcrops at Emu, the deposits are completely covered with insitu laterite and alluvial overburden. Since its discovery in 1984, the deposit has been subjected to three major reverse circulation (RC) drilling programmes which have successively closed up the drill spacing on the main mineralized zone to 25m horizontally and less than 25m vertically. All resource calculations have been based primarily on samples of RC drill cuttings from these programmes. Ore reserve calculations have been completed after each drilling phase. They began with a simple polygonal technique, progressed through two sectional half-distance calculations and are now being completed with a 3-D geostatistical technique. Because of the style of mineralization, Norgold personnel paid particular attention to assessing the variability of the mineralization by using repeat samples, repeat analysis and diamond drill vs RC comparisons. In addition, close attention has been paid to obtaining an accurate estimate of the global SG of the ore bodies. Particular care has been taken to obtain complete drill intersections of the orebody and to maximize wet sample recoveries. Extensive re-sampling and re-analysis of samples has confirmed that Bottle Creek is unusual for an oxidized gold deposit in that all the gold appears to be very fine grained, and evenly distributed within the mineralized zone.

Samples have been taken from a two-stage industrial gold roaster treating a pyrite/pyrthotite/arsenopyrite concentrate, in order to describe the mineral- ogy, composition and surface area of the calcines. Sulfides oxidised to produce a porous magnetite in the first stage and a porous hematite in the second, pyrite predominantly roasted via a pyrrhotite intermediate. Sulfur was eliminated in both the first and second stages whereas arsenic was eliminated in the first but retained in the second, partly as rims on hematite particles. The finer sized particles from the cyclones and electrostatic precipitator, whilst having the greatest surface area, were the most refractory with respect to gold solubilization, probably as a result of incomplete decomposition (through short-circuiting) in the first stage, and through a combination of factors such as overheating and entrapment of sub-micro- scopic gold in the second stage.

A reliable laboratory method to characterise the response of free gold particles when subjected to flash flotation conditions has been developed by AMIRA P420 researchers at Curtin University. This test has been applied to assess the flotation recovery of gravity recoverable gold from free milling ores as well as synthetic ores featuring either a gravity concentrate or gold powder. Hamersley Iron's pellet plant at Dampier involves ore drying, dry grind- ing in ball mills, disc balling and, indurating by use of the straight grate system. After five years of operation, the plant's output has been increased from the design capacity level of 2 M.T.P.Y. to 2.5 M.T.P.Y. Steps taken in equipment modifica- tion, improvements in process control, and changes in maintenance procedures are described.

Future developments in the mining sector will be driven by the need to increase safety, ecological sustainability and efficiency. Autonomous systems represent a huge step towards achieving these goals. This paper describes the basic infrastructure of an autonomous system – essentially a network of distributed sensors. Although the sensors are distributed, the overarching communication network with its related middleware offers a transparent and uniform layer. This middleware acts as an abstraction layer which priorities information and provides information to other platforms on request. This permits higher-level autonomous functionality to utilise all information available in the system regardless of where data has been generated or via which physical communication link it has been processed.The Personnel Proximity Detection (PDD) system is described in detail as an example, with details not only of the system itself, but also of the essential full integration and how the abstraction layer allows this technology to be plugged in at any location of the network. The paper ends with a summary of the content and a conclusion.

The Engel Model search simulator is described with particular emphasis on preparation of input parameters. The computer has a "black box" role in the same way a telephone or radio is a "black box" in communications. A search technique (sensor) is selected and applied in two stages of'search, namely, reconnaissance and detailed. The model relies on knowing and quantifying the parameters of the target sought and the search technique; this is usually done by analogy studies from available literature and experience. The parameters are then balanced by feasibility studies on the search area. Case histories show that the study makes the user aware of what he is likely to find rather than what he wants or needs to find to be viable. Two case histories are presented: one for Mississippi Valley type lead- zinc deposits and another for stratiform copper. The first study showed particular benefits in the input stage and highlighted the fact that one could expect a lot of encouragement by way of interesting results but with little chance of finding the high-grade,

The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

Designing for early access to deep orebodies is an essential driver for improved project payback. Vertical shaft sinking techniques have been developed to allow concurrent mine level excavation while continuing to sink. Project cash flows can also be improved when simultaneously deepening existing shafts beneath operating hoisting systems. Further economic advantage has been realised through creative sinking sequencing in twin ventilation/service shaft projects. A fourth technique to reduce project schedules involves partial shaft barrel equipping allowing unrestricted access to construct stations and continue with level installations. This approach reduces interference with barrel sinking activities to insignificant proportions. This paper reviews how these approaches have added significant value to actual shaft sinking projects, as assessed from a contractorÆs perspective, and discusses some of the practical issues to be addressed when planning future projects. Designers need to take cognisance throughout all project engineering phases of the adage that you are only sinking when cleaning the face. Cleaning can only be sustained when there is sufficient hoisting capacity.

The importance of the accurate determination and interpretation of the bulk density and porosity of a given iron ore deposit is very often disregarded or neglected. Large amounts of time and money are spent on delineating and testing orebodies, and yet one of the most important factors in resource evaluation is sometimes estimated or, at best, determined from existing data from similar deposits. The Thabazimbi and Sishen South iron ore deposits are two well-known economical occurrences of high-grade iron ore in South Africa. Both these deposits formed as secondary enrichment of banded iron formation lithologies. Ongoing density studies on both these deposits are underway and results thus far proved very effective and necessary. Small-scale methods are used to determine average values for different ore types on both deposits. These values are used in resource estimation and geophysical interpretation.

Although mining, particularly of gold and coal, played a significant role in the development of New Zealand, from the time of the spectacular gold rushes of the 1860s its economic importance to the country as a whole has decreased substantially since that time. Gold, coal and non-metallic agricultural and industrial minerals have been found in economically significant quantities, however, the search for base metals has not been successful.

The pilot scale testing of Australian coals for their NO, emissions was carried out at the ACTC to investigate the influence of coal properties, furnace conditions and different NO,, control strategies on NO,, emissions. The NOx emissions for the Australian coals tested were found to vary over a wide range and primarily depended on combustion temperature and excess oxygen conditions. These coals did not exhibit any fundamental difference in NOx levels to other world coals. Under similar combustion conditions, the conversion of coal nitrogen to NO. was found to be best correlated with coal rank parameter, R, max per centage. The use of staged combustion as a control strategy was shown to reduce their NOx levels by 56 - 77 per cent.

In the working up of the electrical arrangements touched on in this paper, the author has had the able assistance of hisfriend Mr. F. J. Mars, to whom he offers his hearty thanks. The selection of the best class of power plant for a mine is a very difficult and large problem and it is quite out of place to dogmatise that anyone of the many systems that offer isbetter than another, eg that the all electrical is better than the partly direct steam-driven and partly electrical, or that a gas plant is better than a steam plant.Such a selection is one that calls for very careful and close consideration, in each particular case, of a large number of regulating factors before it is possible to arrive at a proper decision.

Cannington Mine is an underground silver lead zinc operation located in north-west Queensland which has been in production since 1997. Ore is primarily moved through an underground material handling system comprised of a crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft. The Fowler Shaft was constructed in 1997 using a strip and line method with the intent for it to provide a means to hoist ore from the loading station 600 m below surface. The shaft also serves as the route of key services including high voltage power, mine dewatering and fresh air. Despite the adherence to a mining exclusion zone, large-scale change in geotechnical conditions around the shaft were first observed in 2015. Ongoing ground movement around the shaft lead to cracking and delamination of the concrete liner. Shaft management required the on-site team to measure deformation rates and magnitudes, forecast change, manage rockfall risk and deforming pipework, and ultimately, hoisting skip clearance. Monitoring techniques to observe and measure deformation were required to evolve with the magnitude of movement. Some techniques leveraged off modern technology while some of the most useful techniques were based on logic and first principles. All shaft deformation management strategies relied on the co-operation and alignment between Cannington’s Infrastructure Maintenance, Survey and Geotechnical Departments.

Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.

In gold processing plants, the water from the cyanidation stages is treated to detoxify cyanide species and this recycle water becomes the main part of the process water. Despite the low concentration of free and weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanides in process water, the recoveries of gold and silver is still affected during flotation, especially when gold and silver are associated with iron sulfide minerals. This is a case at the Hidden Valley (HV) Mine. In this study, the effect of free and WAD cyanides on gold and silver recoveries by flotation from the HV Mine was considered.WAD cyanide (WAD CN) was prepared by mixing sodium cyanide and copper sulfate at a cyanide to copper ratio of 3:1 dosed at different cyanide concentrations. It was found that both free and WAD CN depressed gold and silver and particularly iron sulfides in flotation. The depressed gold and silver recoveries were closely associated with the depressed recovery of iron sulfide minerals, suggesting that free and WAD CN may not depress the flotation of liberated gold and silver minerals significantly. It was also found that 10 ppm free cyanide completely depressed the flotation of iron sulfide minerals and WAD CN depression is probably through the WAD dissociation to free cyanide species (mainly aqueous HCN) during the grinding process, resulting from a decrease in pH. Thermodynamic calculation showed that 5.5 ppm free cyanide was released in the end of grinding at an initial WAD CN concentration of 50 ppm. This research provides a guideline to counteract the negative effect of WAD CN in the flotation of gold and silver minerals.CITATION:Guo, B, Peng, Y and Espinosa-Gomez, R, 2013. In August, 1975, North Broken Hill Limited announced that an intersection of 37.3 m of high grade lead-silver-zinc mineralisation, assaying 26.2 per cent Pb, 495 g/tonne Ag and 21.2 per cent Zn had been obtained at its Mine at Broken Hill, 520 m north-east of its No. 3 Shaft and slightly below the No. 36 level (1581 m). Subsequent drilling confirmed the presence of the extension of the Broken Hill Orebody on the north-western side of the Globe Vauxhall Retrograde Shear Zone and defined 1.8 million tonnes of high grade mineralisation. The area containing this mineralisation was subsequently named the Fitzpatrick Area in tribute to the late Mr. W.E. Fitzpatrick a former Member of the the Board and Manager of the Ccnpany's Broken Hill operations. This paper describes in brief the exploration programme leading up to the discovery, the general geology of the area and the proposed future exploration progranme for further extensions of the orebody within the mining leases of North Broken Hill Limited.
