The purpose of this paper is to cover in a general way the extent, geology, quality of product, working methods and trials of the coal mining industry. of New South Wales from 1946 to the present day, with particular reference to the Western field.It must be clearly understood that any opinions expressed are those of the author and not necessarily those of the Joint Coal Board.The extent of the Western coal field at the present stage of investigation may be said to be from a few miles east of Katoomha to a few miles north-west of the township of Ulan, the total distance being 150 miles.To the west of a line from the Western Highway from Lithgow through Wallerawang, PortIand, Tyldesley, Ben Bullen, Kandos and Rylstone, there are no signs of coal except for one or two outiiers in the neighbourhood of Portland. To the east of this line the coal-bearing areas extend to the seaboard approximately 80 miles to the east.GEOLOGY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COAL SEAMSThe Western coal measures belong to the Upper or Newcastle series, which have been correlated with the Sciritheru or lllawarra, and the North-western or Gunnedah measures. Being close to the margin of the coal basin the Western measures have an average thickness of only 200 ft. to 500 ft., or approximately one-half of the maximum development of the Newcastle measures. They are underlain by Upper Marine beds which in turn rest directly on Devonian rocks.

The reconstruction of the world after the present war must inevitably be profoundly influenced by the rise and progress of New China.The principle of Chinese mathrity has been admitted by Great Britain and the United States by their abjuration of extra-territorial tights, and by the withdrawal of the Maritime Customs Administration. The United States admits equality by her declaration that Chinese are eligible for American citizenship, and the reaction to this will be swift enmity to such peoples as may impose humiliating restrictions upon Chinese citizens.Finally, the decisions of the Moscow Conference and the recent meeting of National leaders in Cairo give partnership rights to this new State in post-war reconstruction, and open the way for a rapid realization of her destiny.It seems certain that China, if so she wills, can become, within a generation or so, one of the considerable forces of the world. The toad she wiII follow will be lighted by her own inherent and intrinsic genius. Her speed of progress can no longer be forcibly influenced by other nations and the attitude towards her of somewhat contemptuous patronage hitherto adopted by the European communities bordering the Pacific Ocean must be radically modified.It is doubtful whether the European will ever reach full understanding of Chinese mentality. The Chinese "way of life" since the dawn of her civilization has been totally divergent from that of the European, but the enormous potential strength, due to the simplicity of their requirements and their steadfast industry, is a function of that "way of life." On the other hand the trend of reorganization must obviously be towards Western standards; and a wide knowledge of the potential strength of the Chinese is possible and will be essential in our post-war world. The following, necessarily inadequate, notes are therefore offered, as an indication of the obstacles to be overcome and the capacity of the Chinese executives and operatives to overcome them.For 'thirteen centuries the political and social structure of China proper (ie, excluding Mongolia, Manchuria and Tibet) has been rigidly shaped by the philosophy of Lao Tze and the ethics' of Confucius. This Taoism, which is described as the "way of harmony" with its three jewels of character, gentleness, economy and humility, advocates the minimum of social, economic and political organization and still gives the key to the Chinese character.The Mongol and Manchu conquests of the 12th and 17th centuries, respectively, could hardly be dignified with the name of war, but the superior intelligence and harder mentality of the unwarlike Chinese finally absorbed...

The Newmont Tanami Operations (NTO), formerly the Granites Gold Mine, commenced operation in the mid-1980s with tailings deposition evolving over the past three decades as production has increased and the operation has expanded. Paddock-style tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and in-pit tailings deposition have fulfilled the tailings requirements for NTO over its lifetime with the technical specifications of these facilities improving over time in line with the positive development of standards, guidelines and best practice.This paper reviews the options for tailings storage facilities at NTO and the many considerations that have been analysed and deliberated upon before settling on specific TSF types and designs. It also explains the operating philosophies of the tailings deposition and how the facilities have always strongly maintained the optimum capture and retrieval of water. The current TSF design and criteria is presented, along with the introduction of dry tails harvesting for use in paste production as a backfill product for the underground mine. A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).

The effect of conditioning energy input on the metallurgical results of an emulsion flotation process has beenattributed by previous authors to a detergency process.This paper shows that such a process does not explain the data and that an attrition mechanism is more appropriate.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. Urban development to the south of Sydney is approaching areas of current and proposed coal mining. Already some structures and residential areas are affected by mining subsidence.Subsidence resulting from either conventional pillar extraction methods or longwall mining has been monitored for 15 years to enable the characteristics of the surface deformation to be determined.The vertical and horizontal displacements of survey stations on the surface are monitored and the results arc used to calculate subsidence, changes in slope of the surface, curvatures along the subsidence profile, and the ensile and compressive strains. These features are in turn related to the underground extraction to give a description of surface subsidence and the development of subsidence with time.Subsidence investigations have been carried out over all or part of the workings of six collieries in the Southern Coalfield.Two case histories illustrate the procedure in the investigation of subsidence phenomena. The first example is the study of the subsidence over a series of longwall panels in one seam and the second is a study of subsidence over pillar extraction in two seams one above the other. From the results of the investigations the effects of panel widths on subsidence are determined.This and other information assists mine planning in areas where surface movement and deformation are important considerations.

Recent data contributions to New Zealand Mesozoic terrane geology confirm the consensus interpretation thatNew Zealand grew by the progressive addition of material by plutonic and accretionary processes along the Gondwana margin. The data also: 1. emphasise the discontinuous but inter-related nature of these processes of continental growth, 2. better establish a direct Gondwana correlation of the Western Province and probable Gondwana provenance of at least some of the Eastern Province, 3. suggest specific times and places when passive or strike-slip rather than subduction regimes are recorded along the south Gondwana margin, and 4. potentially lead to interpretations emphasising parautochthonous rather than far travelled relationships between many New Zealand terranes.

Alluvial gold mining is thriving in the Yukon Territory and Alaska. The scale of many operations is similar to those in New Zealand but there is greater government support for research and test work. As a result a great deal of information on equipment for the recovery of alluvial gold has been obtained. This paper is a review of the information with the aim of making relevant data available in New Zealand.

I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. THE following really forms the second part of, or a sequel to, a paper, " Ventilating Metalliferous Mines: a Method of Attack," read before the Broken Hill Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in May, 1920. In that paper the writer advocated a consideration of the question of ventilation in metal mines from a different aspect to that 'which had hitherto prevailed locally. Various factors regarded as having an important bearing on the subject were set forth, together with the results of observations made during ventilation tests carried out at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation.During the subsequent discussion the question was raised of the possibility of any practical application of the method of attack described, and also whether the theoretical considerations mentioned were likely to be of any real utility to the mining engineer engaged in ventilation work in a metalliferous mine.

The Torington Lodes.This paper describes investigations into mineralogical, petrological and structural associations of cassiterite in occurrences of economic value. The work was carried out in three mines, during a number of years, in the hope that the, data collected might be helpfulin the search for occurrences of cassiterite in stanniferous zones and reduce unproductive exploratory work. Tin-bearing lodes at Torington, in the New England district, New South Wales, have been worked since 1880, and the locality is the most important centre of lode tin occurrence in the, State. The township of Torington is 18 miles westerly from Deepwater, a station on the Great Northern Railway, 446 miles from Sydney.The tinfield forms part of the Mole Tableland, which has an altitude between 3,000 ft. and 4,000 ft. above sea level. The country rock, in which the stanniferous lodes occur, is granite of Permian age, which has been intruded into Carboniferous claystone. An inlierof claystone is exposed to the west of the stanniferous area, 'and in it, close to' its contact with the enclosing granite, are occurrences of wolfram and bismuth. These minerals, together with chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, zinc blende, galena and molybdenite, in very small quantity, are associated with cassiterite in lodes traversing the granite, particularly near the claystone, but decrease in amount with distance from the contact. Their occurrence is sporadic and usually causes no trouble in dressing the cassiterite concentrate, the final product containing less than 1% of total penalisable impurity. In Curnow's mine, pyrite, galena and molybdenite have been observed at 700 ft. from surface.The granite is of the biotite type and its structure may be divided into four groups, or classifications, arising from segregation processes during cooling and consolidation. The four classes, in order of extent of distribution, are:1. Granite of normal type, in which the constituent quartz felspar and mica, have a particle size approximately 14, in.2. Porphyritic granite, in which the felspar particles are from % in. to lin. in size, that of the quartz and mica approximately % in.3. A fine-grained granite, in which the particles of all constituent minerals are % in. or less in size;4. A rock of highly siliceous ground mass containing very small particles of felspar and almost negligible biotite.Type 1 is the general type of granite in all mines of the field; types 2 and 3 may occur as large masses, or all three classes may merge rapidly one into the other, and all be disclosed in 20 ft. of driving. Usually, however, the segregations are massive, but are not associated with any special horizon. For instance, a mass of porphyiiticgranite extends from surface to a depth of 440 ft., for a distance of 350 ft. south from the New England main shaft. The upper levels of Curnow's mine, 14" mile south-east, are in normal granite, but a restricted mass 'of porphyritic granite occurred between Nos. 5 and 6 levels, or 400-500 ft. below the collar of the shaft...

Chalcopyrite concentrate was combusted in oxygen-nitrogen atmospheres, the composition of which ranged from 1-100 per cent oxygen. Factors studied included particle size, experimental temperature and oxygen concentration. The study was assisted by chemical and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and temperature measurements of single particles. Size reduction occurring after melting was found to have a major effect on the overall reaction time. Thus time to attain ignition was largely determined by the original particle size, whereas combustion time was independent of this factor. For particles larger than 40 I'm in air the time to attain ignition predominated. The maximum temperatures measured for single particles were the result of pyrite present in the concentrate. Chalcopyrite did not attain thesame temperatures. Vaporization, either as CU(g) or CuO(g) lImited the temperature. Maximum temperatures measured for single particles of pyrite ranged from 1610°C in 14 per cent oxygen to 2360°C in 100 per cent oxygen (both at 700°C). Measured temperatures were compared with those calculated from a diffusion-based model.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. For example, although about 60% of the seam (18 to 20 ft. thick) was left in the workings in the form of rectangular pillars under the city of Newcastle, this was not sufficient to 1?revent'the subsidence which took place about twelve years ago.Again, large quantities of coal in the Borehole seam have been left to protect the shipping arrangements at the Dyke, and other...

Copper, sulphur, nickel, cobalt, palladium, silver, and gold can be recovered from the copper sulphide precipitated from the "copper boil" of the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process used at Western Mining Corporation's Kwinana nickel <refinery. The method is based on an oxidative ammonia leach of copper, nickel, and the precious metals at temperatures below 40°C to produce, in part, elemental sulphur, in the residue. This is followed by heating to decompose thiosulphate and remove some ammonia with precipitation of some of the copper, palladium, gold, and silver. Addition of sulphur dioxide to pregnant liquor precipitates copper, as either Chevreul's salt or copper(I) ammonium sulphite, together with the remaining gold and silver. Less than 10 per cent of the dissolved palladium and less than 1 per cent of nickel and cobalt precipitate to this stage.In one option, the Chevreul's salt is dissolved in a solution of copper(II) sulphate, acetonitrile, and water to generate a solution of copper(I) sulphate. Gold and silver do not dissolve. The solution of copper(I) sulphate is thermally disproportionated by distilling acetonitrile to give exceptionally pure copper powder, with desirable characteristics for powder metallUrgy. Nickel, cobalt, and ammonium sulphate are recovered from the motherliquor of the Chevreul's salt precipitation by return to the Sherritt-Gordon process, where recovery procedures already exist. Palladium is recycled for eventual removal as a sulphide with the gold and silver.In the other option, solid copper(I) ammonium-sulphite is <thermally disproportionated in water at 150°C to copper powder.

Magnetic anomalies in the Southern Coalfields have been subdivided into two characteristic types. Each type is attributed to a separate cause, one being basement structure, and the other near-surface igneous intrusions.Detailed geological mapping of the area and the ability to sample throughout the coalmines greatly assisted in this subdivision.The Triassic sequence contributes no magnetic effect of its own except to diminish the effect of sources within the underlying formations by raising the level of observation.Detecting the presence of igneous intrusions ahead of colliery working faces by magnetic observations within the coal mines may be of value in preventing accidents caused by gas outbursts and in planning the workings so as to avoid loss of production time.

In 1801, Hatchett discovered the oxide of a new element while he was examining a heavy black mineral from Haddam, America, which had been presented to the British Museum. He named the mineral Columbite and the metal Columbium. A year later a Swedish investigator, Eckeberg, while working with a new mineral resembling columbite-yttrotantalite discovered a new element, to which he gave the name of tantalum.In 1844, Rose announced the existence of two new elements in a sample of columbite from Bodenmais. One was similar to Eckeberg's tantalum and the other was called Niobium. Wollaston, in 1909, attempted to show experimentally that columbium and the tantalum were identical, but it was soon proved that they were two separate elements. Subsequently a number of investigatiors found other "new elements" in tantalum and columbium bearing ores, but these were shown to be mixtures of the twin metals.Since Hatchett's Columbium and Rose's Niobium are identical, it is more fitting to use the name assigned to this element by the earlier investigator. However, the term niobium is still retained in Germany and England.The separation of tantalum and columbium has been one of the major problems for analytical chemists since the discovery of the two elements and it is only in recent years that tantalum of a high degree of purity has been produced. High purity columbium metal is probably still to be obtained.Until 1903 tantalum was merely a laboratory curiosity, but about this time its use in incandescent electric light bulb filaments was discovered. Eight years later it was replaced by tungsten, which was better and cheaper. For a time the electrolytic valve action of tantalum was used in the charging of storage batteries, but the chief uses of the metals' to-day are for corrosion resistant apparatus, in vacuum tubes and as carbides in the manufacture of hard cutting and shaping tools.Most of the recent work on the metals has been done by C. W. Balke, in America. Tantalum has been studied more than columbium. OCCURRENCE OF TANTALUM AND COLUMBIUMI. NATURE OF ORESTantalum and columbium occur, nearly always together, as the oxides in combination with other metallic oxides.
