Two outstanding features of the world's young orogenic belts are their very consistently developed suites of volcanic rocks and, it is now recognized, the rather distinctive types of mineralization they contain. Further,it is now known that these volcanic suites exhibit evolutionary patterns, and it is beginning to appear that this evolution in style of igneous activity is accompanied by a parallel evolution in style of mineralization. Specifically,podiform chromite and stratiform pyritic copper ores of Alpine ultramafic/submarine tholeiite association progressively give way to more zincian stratiform ores associated with andesites and dacites, "porphyry copper"deposits developed in quartz dioritic to dacitic plugs, and lead-zinc stratiform ores related to increasingly pyroclastic, rbyodacitic volcanism.This "coupling" is exhibited well in the volcanic arcs - the young orogenic zones-of the SW Pacific which, with tbeir abundance of youthful and commonly unmetamorphosed materials provide an opportunity for investigating, through a petrochemical approach, the possible significance of ores in the elucidation of mechanisms of lava formation. It is suggested as a working hypothesis that in the orogenic (voleanic arc) regime ores are associated with the cale-alkaline rocks because these cale-alkaline rocks are in part generated by exhalative loss, and the ores are among the manifestations of tbat loss.

Treatment of Gold-Bearing Oxide High-Clayish Ores The analysis of modern state of treatment technologies of gold-bearing oxide high-clayish ores showed that the main method applied both in Russia and abroad is sorption leaching and heap leaching with preliminary granulating. The use of any of these processes depends on many factors including average gold grade, site and area of a deposit, clay content and etc. The two processes are often used at the same deposit. In this case, rich ores are treated according to a plant technology, poor ores and ores with cut-off grade are treated with heap leaching. Both technologies possess their own advantages and disadvantages. A plant technology is characterised by high recovery with higher capital and operating costs at the same time. Lower recovery during heap leaching can be attributed to an unstable quality of ore granulating due to both technological and weather conditions. In case of poor high-clayish ores, the use of a combined ore treatment is possible and profitable. It includes the ore disintegration and a clayish fraction treatment by using a heap leaching. In this case, capital and operating costs reduce in comparison with a plant technology and the recovery increases in comparison with heap leaching. Sometimes it reaches a plant recovery. These ores possess special features. As a rule, gold is associated with ore fraction, so it liberates readily from the association with ore ore-forming minerals even with relatively coarse grinding explain their high solution velocity in a hydrometallurgical cycle. Clayish ores are characterised by high sorption activity to gold cyanide complexes as well as extremely low velocity of filtration and thickening of slimic pulps at the same time. The paper describes the options of oxidised high-clayish ores treatment, such as, a plant technology (PIP and CIP process), heap leaching and a combined technology (disintegration, heap leaching of a crystalline fraction and sorption cyanidation). The obtained results were used when selecting a treatment technology and during construction of a plant for oxidised high-clayish ores treatment.

The effect of polyelectrolyte flocculants on the de-watering of a tailing suspension of very fine clay was investigated.Sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out in the labqratory to characterise the de-watering properties of the tailing. The results were used to calculate the effect of flocculant additions on the drainage and vaporation components of the de-watering of a clay suspension ponded on to a sand drainage bed.A flocculant increased the drainage rate, but decreased the volume of water that could be removed by drainage leaving more water to be lost by evaporation.The sorptivity values measured in the laboratory were used in the de-watering equation previously established for the tailing to estimate the effect of flocculant additions on the time required to de-water the suspension from 18.2 to 60 per cent solids w/w. The calculated de-watering times were found to increase or decrease depending on the volume of water removed by drainage and the prevailing evaporation rate.

The Effect of Using Different Comminution Procedures on the Flotation of Platinum Group Minerals The use of High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) has been widely reported to have major benefits in the treatment of minerals such as iron ore and diamonds. To date there have been few investigations into its use in the treatment of ores containing Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs). HPGRs are known to reduce energy consumption and wear costs and improve the throughput in the circuit. In the present investigation the effect of the comparative use of HPGR and conventional crushing in combination with either dry or wet rod milling on the flotation of PGMs was studied using batch flotation. Previous studies of a base metal sulfide ores had shown that either HPGR or conventional crushing followed by dry milling produced the highest grades and recoveries. However in the present study it was observed that a similar treatment produced the worst results and the highest grades and recoveries were obtained for the case of conventional crushing in combination with wet milling. The HPGR showed no advantages in terms of flotation performance and dry milling produced particularly poor flotation results. The results were investigated further using various surface characterisation techniques in order to determine the reason for the decrease in grades and recoveries of platinum when using dry milling and HPGR as opposed to the case for base metal sulfides. The feed and product samples were analysed using ToF-SIMS, XPS and MLA. The paper will propose reasons to explain the different flotation behaviour of the two ore types following the various comminution processes focusing on the surface characteristics of the ores, the particle size distribution and the pulp chemistry.

The Reefton Goldfield on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand was a significant gold producing area between 1860 and 1951. During this period it produced approximately 2.1 million ounces (67 tonnes) of gold. The largest single producer on the goldfield and the deepest mine in New Zealand, was the Blackwater Mine at Waiuta which produced 21 tonnes of gold. The Prolubition Shaft reached a depth of 878 metres (317 metres below sea level). The mine closed suddenly in 1951 with about 66 000 tonnes of are remaining in the stapes. Since closure there has been no attempt to determine the ore potential of the mine at depth. This paper summarises the geology, history and resource potential of the mine and sets out two options for evaluating the remaining resource. The options are either deep drilling from surface or recovery of the Prohibition Shaft and underground development and drilling. A schedule for each option is presented and discussed.

THE machine from which the following results were obtained makes one of a row of seven at work in the Junction North, Concentration Mill at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It consists essentially of a belt for dressing purposes, which travels round two 12-in drums situated at either end of a wooden frame. This frame is supported on wooden legs, and the whole is affixed to two iron castings, one on either side of the frame. A to-and-fro motion is obtained from an eccentric shaft, which, together with the stationary end of the supporting legs, is carried by the iron castings. A belt drive to the forward drum provides a constant rate of travel to the dressing belt.The top half of the dressing belt is supported on 3-in rollers spaced about 12-in centres along the frame of the vanner. A fairly thick dressing belt is used, and no trouble whatever is experienced from the formation of gutters between the rollers.These belts are 28 ft 4 in long, 4 ft wide, 3-16 in thick, and are made of two-ply 32-oz duck, with a coating of rubber on either side. The surface available for dressing is about 10 ft 6 in x 3 ft 8 in- ie, about 38'5 square feet. One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. The Mine granite at the Ardlethan tinfield is dated by Rb-Sr on a muscovite concentrate at not less than 417 ± 2.5 Ma (2s), consistent with the intrusion of this granitic body into folded Late Ordovician sediments. A combination of Rb-Sr and K-Ar evidence suggests a slightly younger age, 41O ± 2.5 Ma, both for the neighbouring Ardlethan Granite and for the hydrothermal alteration of the Mine granite, with which the tin is associated.On this basis, the somewhat high 206Pb/204Pb of two galena samples from within the hydrothermal alteration zone is best explained by an increase in U/Pb of order 10 per cent during a geochemical event in the Late Precambrian, in the rocks which eventually yielded the Pb to the mineralising fluid. This earlier event probably increased Th/U in these rocks as well, by as much as 5 per cent. If these reconstructions are valid, the lower-than-average U/Pb implied for the original Precambrian source rock bespeaks a mantle component of marginally greater proportion than for "average orogene".

During the response to the Moura No 4 disaster, use was made of the New South Wales Mines Rescue Service’s ‘Mineshield’ inertisation equipment. The equipment had to be transported from Newcastle, approximately 1400 kms, and the liquid nitrogen a similar distance. The time taken, and therefore availability of the liquid nitrogen, became a significant problem. Operational issues were also experienced during use. Typically the liquid nitrogen is converted to a gas (vaporised) before being injected into the mine. However, as the propane gas tanker used for the vapourising unit was delayed, an attempt was made to inject the liquid nitrogen directly down uncased boreholes. This proved unsuccessful.Following the Moura No 4 disaster and the Moura No 2 disaster, recommendations were made relating to having inertisation capacity for the Queensland coal mining industry. Today the Queensland industry has multiple options available for inertisation, including the high-volume GAG and smaller volume units such as boilers and membrane separation units. Although it ultimately aided re-entry into Moura No 4, most likely due to the issues associated with supply to Central Queensland, liquid nitrogen has not found favour within the Queensland industry as an inertisation tool.Coregas has commissioned an air separation plant in Mackay, improving the availability of liquid nitrogen to Central Queensland. Based on the availability of this nitrogen, recent sealing operations at Kestrel have trialled using liquid nitrogen and associated vapourising units. This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

The dissolution of gold in cyanide has been studied, using both chemical and electrochemical techniques. The electro-chemical studies have confirmed that gold may become passive in cyanide solution if its potential becomes more positive than -O· 5 V v. saturated calomel electrode (S.C.E.). The results of the conventional solution rate tests suggest that, although the solution rate is controlled by the rate of diffusion of oxygen at low oxygen and agitation levels, when these are increased the gold may become passive and its solution rate approach a steady value, or even decrease with increasing oxygen level. The passivity of gold has been shown to be of importance in the solution of small spheres of this metal, and in the extraction of gold from a calcined auriferous pyrite concentrate.INTRODUCTIONAlthough it has been appreciated for many years (McLaurin, 1893, 1895) that dissolved oxygen is a necessary adjunct to the solution of gold by the cyanide process, attempts to quantitatively assess its effect have led to conflicting results. For example, Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley (1934) reported that an increase in oxygen concentration improved the solution rate, but Beyers (1936) claimed that such an increase would reduce the rate at which the gold dissolved.By using an electrochemical approach Kudryk and Kellogg (1954) showed that the diffusion rate of either the cyanide or the oxygen was a controlling factor, and that, if the mole ratio of cyanide to oxygen concentration was greater than 10, the solution rate was proportional to oxygen concentration.These results, although they represent some of the most careful work available, were in direct contradiction to the findings of Mills (1951), who found that gold may become passive in cyanide solution, with a resultant decrease in solution rate.

Mine ventilation is an essential part of underground mining operations used to provide fresh and cool air, as well as to dilute and remove contaminants from the work environment. This paper presents an overview of the ventilation and gas management systems in one of the underground coalmines in Iran: Parvadeh_1 mine. The mine is located in the Tabas coalfield in the South Khorasan province. It is the only fully mechanised mine in Iran utilising the longwall retreat technique. The mine produces 1.1 to 1.3 Mt of coking coal annually. The mine ventilation system currently utilises two 630 kW exhaust surface fans. The gas management system includes surface to in seam (SIS) predrainage boreholes. The underground mine is equipped with an underground gas reticulation pipeline that is connected to a surface plant for the production of methane gas. There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

It's long been suspected that there has been an increase in the incidence of premature failure of rock bolts in underground coal mines over the past ten years. As far back as 2002 a study found a possible contributor to such premature failure in some Australian coal mines might be linked to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) (Crosky et al, 2002). That study suggested the low impact toughness could be a major influence on the susceptibility to SCC of different steel compositions. A subsequent study involving laboratory corrosion tests however failed to confirm any link with metallurgical factors (Villalba and Atrens, 2007), a finding that is at odds with field experience. Some mine sites today are still reporting prematurely failed rock bolts to the rock bolt manufacturers; the failures are being identified at SCC induced. To this end a research project has recently been commissioned at University of New South Wales (UNSW), which aims to identify the environmental factors causing SCC, through field test sites and simulating the conditions within an accelerated corrosion laboratory. This paper outlines the methodology that will be used in this study.
