IN the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

It is well known that plastic deformation alters many of the properties of a metal and subsequent heat-treatment partially or completely restores these properties.l In the deformed or strained state, the metal is unstable and tends to change toward a condition called a "strain-free state." The transformation occurs through recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth—processes that may take place singly or in combination. The distortion of the lattice of an individual grain of a metal in a state of strain may be rather complex in nature, because plastic deformation produces: (I) dislocations within mosaic blocks; (2) elastic variations of the lattice spacings; and (3) gross alterations throughout the lattice, especially along slip planes, along composition planes between a grain and its mechanical twins, and along boundaries of deformation bands. These gross alterations are of the nature of bent planes or rotated regions of the crystal lattice and are revealed by a spread in the orientation of the grain. Although we cannot describe these strains and their formation accurately because of insuffcient knowledge, we can, nevertheless, use the information as well as possible to obtain a better understanding of recovery processes. In recovery, the lattice of a grain is not made anew as it is in recrystallization, but is improved or mended in such a way that the basic structure remains unaltered: Until recatly observations were .that recovery produced no marked changes in the shapes of spots in Laue diffraction patterns, whereas recrystallization did, but now it is known for silicon ferrite2 that Laue spots may become quite sharp entirely through recovery. Consequently, the shape of Laue spots alone would not be a suitable test to distinguish between recovery and recrystallization. There is considerable evidence that the micro-structure usually does not change visibly during recovery. Absence of a visible change in the microstructure, therefore, provides a sufficient test of recovery in many cases. However, including this observation in a definition of recovery as a necessary condition (this is usually done) is unfortunate, because recovery may, as will become evident later, produce new grain boundaries that are visible not only in the microstructure but also in the macrostructure. For the present, therefore, let us say that a necessary condition for a process to be one of recovery is that the principal orientation or orientations of a deformed grain be essentially unchanged throughout the transformation toward the strain-free state. Several transformations may occur that fulfill this condition, and the nature of the distortion in a grain indicates what these must be if the lattice is to be mended in part or fully. The first attempts at direct utilization of blast-furnace gas in engines were made in 1895. For a considerable time the gas had been burnt in Cowper stoves for heating the blast for the furnace, and under the boilers which supplied steam to the blowing-engines, and others serving the furnaces. It was natural, therefore, that the idea of directly employing it in gas-engines should have occurred simultaneously to several engineers, notably to Lurmann and to Lencauchez, who had pointed out the blast-furnace as a powerful gas-producer. Nevertheless, nowhere had any attempt been made to apply it to this purpose up to the end of 1894, when Thwaite proposed it to Mr. James Riley, of the Glasgom Iron & Steel Company. About the same time investigations were being made in Belgium and in Germany, independently of Thwaite's experiments, which were not generally known on the Continent. The industrial world, which up to that time had hardly favored the idea, had thus been gradually prepared to receive it. The gas-engine, long restricted to small sizes and dependent upon the use of an expensive fuel obtainable only in large centers, now began to make headway. At the Paris Exhibition of 1889 two engines of 100 h.p. were shown and excited much interest among engineers. One had four cylinders, and was made at the celebrated works of the Deutz Company, and the other was a single-cylinder engine, exhibited by two French designers, Messrs. IN this critical age, people are not content .with the judgments passed on men and things long ago, but must needs revise them. It is an excellent spirit, so long as we do not start out with the idea that old opinions must necessarily be wrong, and that all ancient malefactors must therefore be whitewashed. That interesting ogre, Gilles de Retz, to whom the process has recently been applied, is no longer with us, so no one will be the worse for it, but the old bugbear8 of the steelmaker, sulfur and phosphorus, still are, and now Mr. McIntosh, in a recent article in these pages, asks us to regard one of them in a new light.' This article is a most interesting one, with much of which one must agree. One of his -statements, how- ever, although correct, is somewhat' misleading, and he rather discounts the fundamental objection of the steelmaker to phosphorus, its dangerous propensity to segregate and the secondary effect on the carbon distribution and therefore on the homogeneity of the steel that is produced thereby. Further, the evidence on which he bases his claim that phosphorus does not lower the impact strength of steel is rather slight. The writer views with the utmost misgiving any proposal to increase the amount of phosphorus in steel, and cannot regard it in any other light than as a prejudicial impurity, to be kept down to as low a proportion as possible. As a result of using copper-containing scrap in the steelmaking process, the copper content of steels has been steadily increasing for years. Consequently the possible role copper may play in the steelmaking process and in the finished product begins to attract the metallurgists' attention. Some time ago one of the present authors forwarded the idea—based on the results of the analysis of nonmetallic inclusions extracted electrolytically from steels—that sulphur in plain carbon steels is distributed mainly between copper and manganese, the amount of iron sulphide being very small; and that, consequently, the problem of copper and that of sulphur in steel cannot be treated separately.' At the time of the publication of the quoted paper little was known about the relative affinities of copper and manganese for sulphur at high temperatures except that at moderate temperatures (below 1000°C) the affinity of manganese for sulphur is much greater. To gather more experimental data on this subject, the present authors undertook the investigation of the equilibrium constants of the reactions: 2Mn(8 or 1) + S2(g) = 2MnS(s) 4Cu(s or 1) + S2(g) = 2Cu2S (S or I)* 2Fe(s) + S2(g) = 2FeS (s or 1) over a range of temperatures wide enough to establish the dependence of these equilibrium constants on temperature. From the equilibrium constants (K = l/Ps2) the free energy of formation (affinity) can be calculated from F° = -RTln 1/PSt (1) where the standard conditions chosen are: 1 atm of sulphur pressure and the activities of condensed components equal one. The decomposition pressure, Ps2, of sulphur over the respective sulphides is too small to be measured directly, but there is a way of eliminating this difficulty by measuring the equilibrium constant of the reaction between the sulphide and hydrogen. From the latter and from the equilibrium constant of the thermal dissociation of H2S we then calculate Ps2 for the respective sulphide. 2Mn + 2H2S = 2MnS + 2H, 2H2 + S2 = 2H2S_________ 2Mn + S2 = 2MnS The numerical values of the equilibrium constant of the thermal dissociation of H2S at different temperatures were taken from Kelley's paper, "The Thermodynamic Properties of Sulfur and its Inorganic Compounds."² In previous experimental work published by Jellinek and Zakowski3 and by Britzke and Kapustinsky4 the equilibrium constants of the reactions Metal sulphide + H2 = H2S + metal were determined by passing hydrogen, at different rates of flow, over the sulphide, analyzing the resulting H2S + H2 mixture and then extrapolating the H2S/H2 ratio (which is a function of the rate of flow) to the zero speed of flow, a method necessarily involving considerable uncertainty. In the present work the equilibrium ratio was actually measured instead of being extrapolated. The apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Experimental Procedure The sulphides were prepared by the following methods: FeS Powdered iron which had been reduced with hydrogen (ferrum reduc-tum) was mixed in stoichiometric ratio with sublimed sulphur and carefully ground. The mixture was put into an alundum crucible, covered with pure sulphur, and the reaction started by touching the mixture with a glowing iron rod. After the reaction was completed the product (still containing some metallic iron) was again ground with sulphur, put into a Rose crucible, covered with sulphur, and heated in a strong current of pure hydrogen. Analysis of the final product showed 62.46 pct Fe and 36.59 pct S. Theoretical for FeS: 63.53 pct Fe and 36.47 pct S. MnS Manganese sulphide (precipitated and carefully washed with distilled water containing H2S) was dried in a Rose crucible in an atmosphere of H2S and heated in a current of hydrogen for 2 hr at red heat. The product was then ground and ignited for several hours at 1000°C in a current of hydrogen sulphide. Analysis showed 64.53 pct Mn and 36.63 pct S. Theoretical: 63.15 pct Mn and 36.85 pct S. Some MnS samples were prepared from metallic manganese and sublimed sulphur by mixing and grinding them and then heating in a current of hydrogen sulphide in an alundum tube.

The Smackover oil and gas field lies in Ouachita and Union Counties, Ark., in the south-central part of the state, in T.15 and 16S., R.15, 16, and 17W. It is 10 miles north of El Dorado, the principal business and railroad center in the south-central part of the state, and extends from the town of Smackover in all directions. Productive territory having an aggregate area of nearly 55 sq. mi. has been developed. It extends 6 miles from north to south and 12 miles from east to west. The field may be divided into two parts: the east district, which includes the area east of the town of Smackover, and the west district, which includes the area west of the town of Smackover. In relation to the neighboring productive fields of Arkansas, the Smackover field is 9 miles north of the El Dorado oil and gas field, 8 miles slightly west of north of the East El Dorado oil and gas field, and 16 miles east of the Stephens oil field. Smackover was discovered in May, 1922, when the Oil Operators Tnist drilled well No. 1 on the J. T. Murphy farm, in the southeast quarter of sec. 8, T.16S., R.15W. This well is located almost on the top of the Norphlet dome and was drilled to the Nacatoch sand. It had an initial open flow volume of 30,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, and a rock pressure of 950 lb. per sq. in. In July, 1922, the V. K. F. Co. completed the first oil well in sec. 29, T.l5S., R.l5W., on the north side of the Norphlet dome, and 3 miles north of the first gas well. This well started the active development of the north and northwest sides of the dome.] The field was extended westwards, when oil was discovered in the Nacatoch sand, during October, 1922, in sec. 4, T.l6S., R.l6W., 51/2 miles west of the original gas well. A MEMORABLE year has just passed in the field of coal utilization. Because of the war, oil conversions in industrial, commercial, and domestic installations have been made to the equivalent of 20,000,000 tons of coal. The war emergency has resulted in a great shifting of various types of coals to various markets. Huge tonnages of metallurgical-quality coals have been withdrawn from steam and domestic business and sent into the iron and steel industries. Marginal coals have replaced these coals in the steam and domestic field.

From the chemical, metallurgical, and mineralogical points of view, the importance of thermodynamic data for metal-sulphides and sulphur dissolved in molten metal has long been realized. Such data will give a basis for thermo-dynamic calculations of processes such as roasting and the distribution of sulphur between molten metal and slags. Furthermore, it will help us understand the chemical forces which tie sulphur to the metal and to the melt. Thermodynamic studies of solid sulphides and the equilibria between solid sulphides and metals have been carried out in a rather large number of cases by several investigators. An excellent review of this work is given by Kelley.1 On the other hand, very little is known about the thermodynamic properties of molten sulphides and of sulphur dissolved in molten metal. The only system which previously has been investigated in this respect is the iron/sulphur system. The purpose of the present investigation was primarily to obtain further data for metalisulphur melts and the system silver/sulphur was chosen, not because this system was expected to be of special interest in itself, but because the silver/sulphur system is a typical example of a metal/sulphur system. Because of the low melting temperatures, the work could be carried out without appreciable furnace and refractory difficulties. The sulphur in this system possesses a rather high escaping tendency compared to most other metal/sulphur systems. By the method employed (reaction with hydrogen to form hydrogen sulphide) this gives ratios Ph2s/Ph2 up to 0.30, which may be determined accurately. 'rhermodynamic investigations of the heterogeneous reaction Ag2S +H2 —+ 2Ag + H2S have previously been carried out by Pelabon,2 Keyes and Felsing,3 Jellineb and Zakowski,4 Wat-anabe,6 and Britzke and Kapustinsky.6 Their results are in rather poor agreement. Experimental Part PRINCIPLE In the present invehgation the escaping tendency of sulphur from the condensed phase was determined by the reaction: S + H2 = H2S The ratio Ph2s/Ph2 is at constant temperature, directly proportional to the escaping tendency of sulphur and to its chemical activity in the condensed phase. (This ratio will subsequently be denoted by H2S/H2.) From this ratio and its variation with temperature and with change in the com- position of the condensed phase, thermodyrlamic quantities such as free energy and heat of reaction can be derived. The apparatus used is shown in Fig 1. The silver/sulphur alloy was placed in a crucible inside a refractory tube and mounted inside the furnace to the left. The tube was a part of a closed, gas-tight system in which the gas mixture could circulate until equilibrium was established. Circulation was maintained by the glass propeller to the right, driven by an external magnet, and promoted by the chimney action of the furnace. The gas passed up through the furnace, down into the crucible where it came in contact with the alloy, passed rapidly up through a narrow tube and out of the hot zone. After equilibrium was established between the gas and the condensed phase, the composition of the gas mixture was determined from its density. In its circulation, the gas mixture passed through a chamber (lower right on Fig 1) containing a buoyancy-balance, where the density of the gas was determined by magnetic balancing. A process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is under development at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The new procedure includes a two-stage fluid-bed treatment in which the pelletized concentrate with 33% Cu and 7% S is first desulfurized to about 0.5% S in an oxidizing atmosphere, and then metallized by reduction with hydrogen. The reduced product is melted with flux to separate metallic copper from the gangue. The metal must be refined to remove residual sulfur and iron. The pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment is an important feature of the process, because it permits shorter reaction time, decreases dusting, and facilitates subsequent processing.

INTEREST in the use of graphite as a high-temperature engineering structural material has recently increased markedly. However, actual use of this material has been limited, in part because information about its high-temperature mechanical properties has been lacking. The information needed includes not only reliable values for the properties, but also how to control these properties. Malmstrom, Keen, and Greenl have reported on the tensile and creep properties of some graphites above 2700° F (1500°C). They observed measurable creep under tensile loading at 4000 OF (2200 °C) and higher, with elongations of about 7 pct at 4500°F. Their typical elongation-vs-time curve showed the normal three stages of creep found for many metals at elevated temperatures. The specimens used were heated by passing an electric current through them. This method of heating caused a significant difference between the surface and axis temperatures, and may have affected the results. More recent work by kattus, in which the specfinens were also heated by their own resistance, showed very little plastic deformation for either slow or fast tensile testing or for creep testing. Work at this Laboratory, already reported,3 showed that for temperatures above 4500 "F and under conditions of slow tensile loading some commercial graphites exhibited elongations up to 20 pct. The work reported here is the continuation of a study of the tensile creep behavior of some commercially available synthetic graphites at temperatures up to 5300°F, and is preliminary to a more systematic investigation of the variables governing the high-temperature mechanical properties of graphite. MATERIALS TESTED The tests were conducted on six blocks from four lots of synthetic graphite bearing four different commercial-grade designations. These blocks were selected because their tensile stress—strain properties had been determined in previous work.3 Table I pre- sents the available information, supplied by the producers, on the processing of these materials. Also included in this Table are the densities and the tensile strengths at room temperature and 4500°F determined by the authors. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The furnace used to heat the specimens for testing is shown in Fig. 1. The heating element was a graphite tube, 3-in. OD by 2 1/2 in. ID by 24 in. length. In the earlier period of anthracite-mining, much coal was wasted, both underground and in the culm-banks on the surface. Such waste is common in the development of new mining-districts, in which, as a rule, only the richest material can be profitably treated. In the anthracite-region, special causes operated to increase this evil. The mines were generally worked under 20-year leases, and royalties were paid upon such coal only as was actually marketed. The lessees consequently cared for immediate profit solely. They were not bound to win all the coal they exposed, or to leave it in such condition that their successors could win it. Nor was it their interest or duty to educate consumers in the use of their product. The market called for coal of large sizes; and such coal they furnished, throwing away the rest. Any pains taken by them to bring about a more rational use of coal by their consumers would have borne fruit, after their leases had expired, to the benefit of somebody else. A full statement of the situation was given in 1893, in the report of the State Commission, appointed in 1889 to investigate the subject.' That body included the names of Heber S. Thompson, William Griffith and the late Eckley B. Coxe.2 Its report gives special attention to the utilization of the old culm-banks.

Compania de Acero del Pacifico, S.A., the sole Chilean steel producer, is adding to the expanding Chilean economy with development of the El Algarrobo mine. Expected to go on stream early in 1962, Algarrobo is a conventional open pit mine that will include facilities for ore extraction, crushing and screening, rail transport to the harbor at Huasco, modern ship-loading equipment and maintenance shops. CAP anticipates producing 1.38 mil- lion tons annually of high-grade ore for national and world market consumption. Chilean and North American management and engineering teams combined more than a decade ago in the financing and building of CAP'S Huachipato integrated steel plant. A similar performance is being achieved in northern Chile near the town of Vallenar with the opening of a 50-year supply of iron ore from the Algarrobo deposit. This successful intra-American undertaking deserves special mention in these times when some U.S. foreign assistance programs must be defended, particularly with respect to Latin America. North American financial participation in Algarrobo, through the Export-Import Bank of Washington, represents the greatest portion of the $24 million being invested.

It is stated by Dr. Tuttle in a paper read before the New Jersey Historical Society, that the celebrated Dickerson mine at Succasunna, Morris Co., N. J., yielded ore, about as early as 1710, for use at the Whippany forge, on Rockaway River, between Rockaway and Boonton. The ore was, for some time, free to all who chose to dig it. The tract embracing the Dickerson mine mas taken up, on account of its minerals, in 1713 or 1714, by John Reading, who sold it in 1716 to Joseph Kirkbride. John Jackson built a forge in 1722 on the Rockaway River a mile west of Dover. The ore here worked was probably chiefly from the Dickerson mine, but a portion may have been Hibernia. Hon. E. D. Halsey, of Rockaway, K. J., writes me: It is quite possible that the ore was at first taken from the outcrop of Hibernia by anybody who wanted it. The property first had an owner, May

The leading antimony mineral is stibnite. In smelting stibnite ore two processes are available, precipitation and roasting-reduction. The former is suited only for high-grade ores. As low-grade ores are more common than high-grade, roasting-reduction is of greater importance than precipitation. In the roasting process the aim may be to leave the oxidized antimony in the ore, or it may be to volatilize as much of the antimony as possible, collect the volatilized oxide as a rich intermediary product and smelt it for antimony, leaving the gangue poor enough to be considered a waste product. Whichever way the roast is conducted certain difficulties inherent in stibnite are encountered. These are: 1. The low melting point of stibnite which, according to Pélabon,' is 550°C., according to Wagemann2 540°C., and according to Borgstroma 546°C. 2. The ignition temperature: According to Friedrich,4 stibnite, if heated in air, begins to oxidize at 290°C. if the size of a grain is 0.1 mm. in diameter; at 343", if 0.1 to 0.2 mm.; and 430" if 0.2 mm. 3. The fusibility of a mixture of Sb2S33 and Sb203 which in the form of kermesite (Sb2S3)z.Sbz03 melts at 517°C.6 4. The volatility of Sb2Ss and SbzOs, for which no numerical data appear to exist, although practical experience has shown that they are volatile at low temperatures. IRON-ORE beneficiation is becoming of vital importance to the Lake Superior region, since only a few decades will be needed to exhaust the direct shipping ores even if generous allowances are made for discoveries of new orebodies. If the region is to continue as the chief source of ore to the steel industry of the United States, it must concentrate or otherwise beneficiate the enormous tonnages of available iron formations. A beginning along this line has already been made. About one-fifth of the total shipment, even now, is the product of some sort of concentrating process, while another fifth is improved in physical structure by crushing, screening, drying, sintering, or some other similar method. The amount of material amenable to these processes is limited, however; and, in order to be able to utilize the billions of tons of iron formations that cannot be so beneficiated, an intensive study of their nature and concentration possi-bilities is necessary. As long as high-grade ores are available in ample quantities, ore dressing is economically impossible, but as soon as the supply nears exhaustion it becomes necessary. At first the products of ore dressing must meet as nearly as possible the same specifications as the rich ores in order to be adapted to the reduction processes already established. The future requirements as to quality will depend on the one hand upon the ability of the ore dresser to eliminate undesired constituents and charac-teristics in the material, and on the other upon the adaptation of the reduction processes to the product that can be economically supplied. A better understanding of the blast furnace and other reduction reactions, and improvements in the preparation of raw materials, should enable the Michigan districts to continue to supply ore for a long time to come. The study and testing of the iron formations necessary to bring a utilization of the low-grade ores, though requiring time and effort on the part of all concerned, should not be postponed, especially since the economic situation forces the use of the highest grade ore in preference to the leaner material.

Under sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines and the Department of Energy, a new type of rotary rock drill was developed by The Bendix Corp. Originally developed for the production of holes for the installation of longer than seam height roof bolts, the flexible drill is a useful tool for many drilling applications. It allows hands-off or remote production of holes for increased drilling speed and greater operator safety in any strata suitable for rotary drilling. This paper discusses various applications and experience for the flexible drill system in coal, metal/nonmetal mining, and for civil engineering uses. Manual, remote control, and automatic roof bolter modules are also discussed.

GEORGIUS AGRICOLA was not only the author of works on Mining and allied subjects, usually asso ciated with his name, but he also interested himself to some extent in political and religious subjects. For convenience in discussion we may, therefore, divide his writings on the broad lines of (1) works on mining, geology, mineralogy, and allied subjects; (2) works on other subjects, medical, religious, critical, political, and historical. In respect especially to the first division, and partially with regard to the others, we find three principal cases : (a) Works which can be authenticated in European libraries today ; (b) references to editions of these in bibliographies, catalogues, etc., which we have been unable to authenticate ; and (c) references to works either unpublished or lost.
