"No true conception of the Park City mining district can be obtained without first giving consideration to the part it has played as a consistent producer of mineral wealth. Its position in this regard is almost unique in the annals of a lead silver camp. For over fifty years it has been a continuous producer of lead and silver and for twenty years it has added to the world's supply of zinc. Few camps with its productive history are so little known to the mining fraternity for the reason that its life has never been punctuated by periods of ""boom"" which serve to attract general attention, neither has it been the field of operation for promoters who temporarily focus attention upon their scene of action. Its history is one of legitimate mining operations. These were at first carried on by a number of smaller companies. A period of consolidation followed and at the present time the entire production of the camp is in the hands of two major companies and one smaller company. These are flanked by a number of prospecting properties, which are at this time actively engaged in the search for ores and later events will doubtless put some of them in the producing class.A technical discussion of the ore occurrence and mining operations in the camp will be the subject of a paper to be read before this meeting of the Institute. The mission of this article is to supply a ""Baedeker"" where Baedeker is lacking.The town of Park City is a typical, up-to-date, western mining camp which owes its existence as a town of 4,500 inhabitants solely to the mining industry. The camp is located 7,000 feet above sea level, thirty-two miles east of Salt Lake City. It is situated on the Victory Highway seven miles from its junction with the Lincoln Highway and has the benefit of excellent automobile communication with the metropolis of the state. Both the Denver and Rio Grande and the Union Pacific Railroads give daily train service to the camp and effectively solve the transportation problems of the mining companies."

Thin foils made from the gold-rich region of- short (0.15 mm)Au-Ag diffusion couples annealed at 880°C for 1 hr were examined in ax electron microscope and the structures were compared with that of pure gold subjected to identical heat treatments. The couples underwent Plastic deformation (bending) during the diffusional anneal. The foils prepared from the diffusion zone have a higher dislocation density and incidence of subboundaries than pure gold. The plastic bending of the couple can be interpreted in terms of the climb of edge dislocations, which are pavallel to the bend axis, along the direction of diffusion. THE interaction of lattice defects during interdiffu-sion between two metals has been considered by several investigators. In particular, da Silva and Mehl,1 Barnes,' and Bardeen and Herring3 have proposed models based on interactions between point and line defects to account for the Kirkendall effect (marker movement). Each of these models is based on dislocation climb, which can either add or remove lattice planes, induced by an under- or supersaturation of vacancies. A theoretical treatment of the nucleation and growth of voids by the condensation of vacancies has been presented by Seitz.4 Stresses can arise in a binary diffusion couple as a result of the vacancy flux and the gradient in the lattice parameter. rinkmman' has investigated the effects of diffusion-induced stresses on void formation; the results of his analysis suggest that voids can form and grow under the influence of these stresses in the absence of an excess vacancy concentration. The relationships between vacancy supersaturation and diffusion-induced stresses and void formation have been elucidated also by Balluffi and seigle6 who concluded that the stress generated by a vacancy supersaturation aids the growth of voids. Experimental evidence which indirectly shows that stresses are produced by chemical diffusion has been obtained by several researchers.2,7-9 This evidence consists in part of the observation by light microscopy of the formation of subgrains, a process characteristic of the high-temperature deformation of some metals during creep.'0 More striking, however, is the plastic bending of short (0.2 mm) Cu-Ni couples observed by Barnes2 and of boron-doped silicon crystals reported by Queisser.9 Diffusion-induced dislocations in iron and silicon have been investigated by Ainslie et a1.11and Schwutte and Queisser,12 respectively, the former using transmission electron microscopy and the latter an X-ray transmission technique. Matthews and Crawford13 observed the formation of boundaries by the climb of interfacial misfit dislocations in thin, vapor-deposited Au-Pd couples diffused in situ in an electron microscope. In order to obtain additional information on the phenomena associated with defect interaction and diffusion-induced stresses in binary couples, an electron transmission study of foils prepared from the diffusion zone of short Au-Ag couples was undertaken. The initial objective was to investigate the processes occurring at various points of the diffusion zone. Subsequent research demonstrated that foils could be prepared only from the gold-rich region of the diffusion zone using the technique described herein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation and Annealing of the Diffusion Couples. The couples were made from annealed, high-purity (99.999 pct). polycrvstalline gold and silver sheets (0.075 mm thick). Shall (0.075 by 5 by 17 mm) elec-tropolished coupons of gold and silver were pressure-bonded by heating the two metals in a graphite device to 770°C and holding at this temperature for approximately 30 min. MINING occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, but its relative contribution has increased greatly during the post- war period. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value I of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, but by 1936 the pro- portion had risen steadily to 12.76 per cent. Mining felt the depression, hut unlike agriculture, which is still ' sorely stricken, it has passed from early convalescence to complete recovery. For each of the last two years new high records were established for the industry as a whole and for the quantity of most metals produced. Mining has had a notable effect on - the growth of the power industry in Canada. Water power has been developed in the same or adjacent areas wherever mining camps have been 1 established, with few exceptions. Consumption of electrical energy by the mining industry gained 72 per cent within a decade, rising from 1604 million kw.-hr. in 1926 to 2754 in 1935. Tunnelling today is a lot more than drilling and blasting. The developments in drilling and blasting technique have made it pos¬sible to save costs both by increasing the advance per round and optimizing the demands on the final contour. Increasing the hole depth by using longer feeds and bigger dril¬ling rigs make the drilling time shorter compared to the set up time. It is important that the deeper holes are followed up by using a suitable cut. The most common cut in Sweden today is a parallel hole cut with one or more large holes; with a diameter corresponding to the hole depth and wanted advance per round. It is often specified that smooth blasting is to be carried out with a specific drill hole spacing. It is extremely rare, however, for specifications to be issued concerning the alignment of the raw of holes closest to the contour holes. It is very easy to ruin the effect of smooth blasting altogether by firing the rest of the round carelessly with an excessively high charge distribution. The drilling and blasting of the contour holes and the line of holes closest to the contour holes is therefore an extremely important part of any underground work. Accuracy and care in connection with the drilling of contour holes is also extremely important since it is possible to reduce the amount of overbreak, the result being more rapid mucking out, smoother and more durable surfaces and also less consumption of concrete for lining purposes.

VERY few studies of the aluminum-sodium system have been reported. Heycock and Neville1 were unable to detect any solubility of sodium in liquid aluminum. Mathewson2 prepared an equilibrium diagram consisting of two horizontal lines at the melting points of the two metals. He was unable to detect solubility at either end of the system. Scheuer3 first developed a method for the chemical determination of sodium in aluminum and then studied the solubility of sodium in liquid aluminum. His method involved heating aluminum with excess sodium under hydrogen until the two liquids were at equilibrium, chilling the melt, and analyzing the aluminum-rich layer. He reported the solubility to be 0.l0 pct sodium at 700°C, 0.115 pct at 750°C, and 0.128 pct at 800°C. This paper on the aluminum-sodium system is the twenty-first in a series from the Aluminum Research Laboratories describing equilibrium relations in aluminum alloy systems. MATERIALS The alloys for this investigation were prepared from electrolytically refined aluminum (99.99 pct) and sodium of reagent quality conforming to specifications of the American Chemical Society.4 Chemical analysis of the aluminum showed the following impurities: 0.002 pct Si, 0.002 pct Fe, 0.002 pct Cu, <0.001 pct Mn, 0.002 pct Mg and 0.001 pct Na. The sodium content of all alloys was determined by either chemical or spectrographic standard procedures5 No. IIA and No. SII respectively. DETERMINATION OF LIQUIDUS The boundary of the miscibility gap was determined by a modification of the method of Scheuer3 and of that used by Henry and Cordiano.6 As finally developed the method was as follows: A fused alumina crucible 25 mm id with 75 mm depth and 1.5 mm wall thickness was placed on the bottom of a container made from a 4-in. length of 1 ½ -in. iron pipe and pipe caps. The space around the sides of the crucible was filled with 40 mesh crystalline alundum. A charge of 60 g of aluminum and 10 to 15 g of sodium was placed in the crucible, the sodium first being trimmed and rinsed with iso-pentane to remove kerosene. The container was tightly capped, filled with argon (99.6 pct pure), and heated to the desired temperature (between 670 and 800°C). A positive pressure of argon (about 8 mm of mercury) was maintained through a small pipe to the upper cap. After soaking for from 2 to 5 hr, the container was quenched by directing a stream of water onto the base, so that solidification of the aluminum-rich layer was rapid and essentially unidirectional. The portion of the Nb-Sn phase diagram between 75 and 79 at. pct Nb at temperatures near the liquidus has been investigated by melting alloys of known composition and examining the microstmc-tzlres resulting when these melts were quenched. The Nb-Sn samples were contained in magnesia sleeves, and were mounted in a high-pressure apparatus. It was shown that Nb3Sn me1ts by a peri-tectic decomposition and that the composition of the compound Nb3Sn at the peritectic horizontal lies between 77 and 78 at. pct Nb. Analysis of the phases present in the samples was accomplished by anodic staining techniques and an electron-microbeam analyzer. DURING the past several years a great deal of work has been devoted to the Nb-Sn system, and the bulk of this work has been primarily concerned with the intermetallic phase Nb3Sn. However, the melting characteristics of Nb3Sn have not been investigated because of the difficulty in maintaining known compositions due to tin losses by vaporization, and the added difficulty of containing Nb-Sn alloys without sample-container reaction at the high temperatures involved. This paper reports on the development of a technique for containing Nb-Sn alloys under pressure high enough to prevent tin losses at temperatures in excess of the liquidus. Using this technique, melts of known composition were made and a phase diagram near the liquidus is proposed based on the microstructures resulting when these melts were quenched. EXPERIMENTAL The Nb-Sn alloys weighing 0.7 g each were prepared in the form of cylinders. Niobium powder, -200, +325 mesh, and tin shavings with a minute amount of tin powder for a binder were mixed in the desired proportions and cold-pressed at 50,000 psi in a 0.150-in. die. This cylinder was then enclosed as shown in Fig. 1, and the entire arrangement mounted in a 2.6-in. pyrophyllite tetrahedron.&apos; The desired temperatures (-2500°C) presented several problems in high-pressure container materials. Boron nitride, the usual sample holder, was found to react with niobium to form the nitride. However, MgO cans and plugs machined from refractory rods did not melt nor react with the sample. Thick tantalum contact disks were used to carry the large currents (~450 amps) to the graphite heater, since tantalum did not melt and had enough strength to prevent extrusion of the sample. It was further observed that the graphite heater and tantalum disks could not be in direct contact with the pyrophyllite because it melts and decomposes at these temperatures to kyanite and coesite (SiO2),2 the former reacting with graphite and the latter with tantalum to form the silicide. Data on mining applications of geophysical activity in the Free World in 1964 have been made available to SME again this year by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Worldwide data were collected as part of an annual service to the mining industry by the Committee for Geophysical Activity of SEG. Data are taken from 245 voluntary responses (53%) to questionnaires circulated to 463 company, government and university organizations engaged in mining geophysical operations and research all over the world. WORLD ACTIVITY Worldwide manpower utilization totalled 9323 professional man-months and $14.5 million was reported spent in mining geophysical activity in 1964. This is up from 9078 man-months and $12.6 million in 1963 and 8065 man-months and $12.8 million in 1962. Worldwide geophysical activity in terms of manpower utilization and expenditures is presented in the accompanying table.

A preliminary study of silver ion adsorption by sphalerite in ion exchange column with influent electrolyte marked with radiosilver is described. Rapid ion exchange occurs at first followed by slow reaction controlled perhaps by solid state diffusion. One experiment with radiocopper instead of radiosilver is reported briefly. IT has been known for many years that sphalerite is floated after it has been activated by a metallic cation, particularly copper.&apos; The activation of sphalerite by copper is known to be an exchange of an atom of copper for an atom of zinc at the surface of the sphalerite.2,3 It has been estimated from various guesses of the available mineral surface that the depth of the copper-bearing coating is of the order of thickness of one atom. However, the exact mechanism of the activation process is unknown. A number of metals other than copper act in the same general manner."&apos; " In particular, it has been known that silver replaces zinc at the surface of sphalerite. As copper is usually divalent, whereas silver is monovalent, it may well be assumed that there are differences, perhaps major differences, in the detailed scheme of activation by these two cations. Furthermore, since silver has unusual photoelectric properties and may be a contributor to the fluorescence of sphalerite, a study of its activating mechanism might open up some interesting avenues for exploring these other phenomena. The choice of silver as an activator of sphalerite was suggested also by the fact that its radioactive tracer, silver 110, is particularly convenient in that it has a long half-life and is energetic enough to permit counting through a counter window. The experimental technique selected, therefore, included the preparation of solutions of silver nitrate con- taining a proportion of active silver nitrate sufficient to give convenient counting data. In further considering the method to be used, a desirable choice seemed the use of batch experimentation in which a given solution was allowed to act on a certain lot of mineral for a given length of time at a given temperature, this period of mutual reaction being followed by analyses of the separated solid and solution. But an alternative method seemed more attractive. This is the method now so familiar to the users of ion-exchange resins, which was first made famous by the Russian chromatographer, Tswett.6-8 It consists in forming the mineral into a porous column through which the solution is allowed to flow at a constant rate. The usual method of allowing a batch of solid to react with solution is the equivalent of a single plate distillation operation while the chromatographic or ion-exchange column is a multiple-plate method—the multiplicity of the plates being represented by the reciprocal of the rate of flow of solution through the column. Dimitri Kececioglu (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—The idea of applying metal cutting theory to comminution and vice versa is very impressive. Among others, the demarcation of wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely Kick&apos;s and Rittinger&apos;s, draws attention here. A study of Figs. 6 to 9 shows the following: In Fig. 6, 1 point out of 8; in Fig. 7, 4 points out of 26; in Fig. 8 only 1 point out of 13; and in Fig. 9 practically none out of 13 points fall out of curve No. 2. Also when grinding particles smaller than 5x10." in. it is difficult to measure very accurately the grinding forces, chip geometry, and particle size. In view of the above it would be difficult to make a positive and distinct demarcation of the Wheel-grinding data into two regions, namely, Kick&apos;s and Rittinger&apos;s. The idea of using machine grinding to determine the comminution properties of materials is indeed unique. The following cautions come to mind, however, regarding applicability of machine grinding data to comminution: 1—Grinding gives uniform particle size, whereas comminution gives a variety of particle sizes in the same process. The fact that grinding gives uniform particle size is not necessarily an advantage because in comminution the overall energy under actual comminution is desired and comminution invariably results in the production of a variety of particle sizes. 2—In grinding, a small particle is ground off a comparatively large surface. In comminution small bodies are broken down to smaller bodies. This makes it difficult to establish a concept of reduction ratio in machine grinding. 3—The mechanics of machine grinding involve direct shearing action under very high strain and comparatively high compression at the shear zone, whereas: comminution involves direct dynamic compression and surface friction with comparatively little strain and shear. Consequently the mechanics of machine grinding appear to be different from those involved in comminution. Hence one might arrive at erroneous con- clusions when comminution characteristics are eval-uated from machine grinding results. It is noticed also that functions other &apos;than Eq. 16 which do not involve the concept of direct proportionality of useful energy input to new surface area created (Eq. 2 and particularly Eq. 12) may be derived to fit the, data of curve No. 2. One such relationship may be u = ct-", where c is a positive constant and n is a positive constant less than unity. This, of course, is made possible because data of a very small range. of particle size are being fitted by the curves of No. 2 and the hereby suggested relationship. A sound comminution theory should be applicable to a relatively large range of particle size. George B. Clark (Department of Mining Engineering, University of Illinois)—While the experimental work of Walker and Shawin this article is of intrinsic value in revealing certain fundamental aspects of machine grinding, milling, and related processes and in adding to the store of information concerning the comminution of solid materials by this particular process, it appears doubtful that the results of their research can be employed to verify either Kick&apos;s or Rittinger&apos;s theories. Both these laws were originally developed and proposed on the basis of very simple, idealized hypotheses. The creation of parallel idealized physical laboratory conditions which would be required for either their proof or disproof appear to be well beyond the scope of human ingenuity, at least at present. One great weakness of the imputed verification is that the spread of the points plotted on the graphs is not sufficient to permit accurate &apos;curve fitting. The range of particle sizes included in the belt and wheel grinding is not extensive enough to show any general trends, particularly for the horizontal portion of the curves, said to represent Kick&apos;s laws. That the milling; grinding, and turning data obtained by Walker and Shaw for both metals and minerals happen to comply with. certain interpretations of these two theories under certain specialized conditions

Catalytic purifiers are widely used as exhaust treatment devices on diesel equipment in confined spaces. The paper summarizes some studies carried out at the University of Lulea on diesel exhaust purifiers. The main purpose has been to elucidate important chemical activities of catalysts useful for the improvement of their effect. The effects of platinum catalysts on exhaust constituents such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned gaseous hydrocarbons, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are discussed. Also pointed out are the great differences in catalyst activity and advantages/disadvantages associated with the catalysts.

The surface mining operations of the Simplot Fertilizer Co. are on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation approximately 16 miles east of Fort Hall, Idaho (Fig 1). The Phosphoria formation outcrops in sec. 2, 3, 11, 14, 15, 22 and 27, T 4 S, R 37 E, Boise Meridian. The ownership of these phosphate-bearing lands is divided between individual Indians and the Bannock-Shoshone Tribe, and the royalties are paid to the respective owners on a tonnage basis, as the rock is mined. The geology and mineral resources of the Fort Hall Reservation were studied by the U. S. Geological Survey in 1913 and reported on in 1920. † However, it was not until the winter of 1945 that exploratory work was undertaken by private enterprise. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A. M. to 10 P. M. except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library; through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention: The Library is prepared, to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general Information on the geology and mineral resources of-all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The slags derived from the smelting of lead and copper ores are composed essentially of silicates. The problems arising from the smelting of these ores consequently involve the study of silicate fusions. In the absence of specific knowledge concerning the compounds occurring in slags, it has been the practice of metallurgists to treat them in terms of their total chemical composition. Slags have been classified as monosilicates, bisilicates, sesquisilicates, and subsilicates according to the relative amounts of oxygen in the acid and basic radicles of the hypothetical salt produced. While this has been a useful guide to metallurgists in computing the furnace charges, it falls far short of a basis for the scientific investigation of slags. In order to understand the nature of a slag as a whole it is necessary to learn the physical and chemical properties of the mineral compounds which go to make up that slag. The efficiency with which an ore is smelted in a furnace depends primarily on the physical properties of the compounds formed during the operation. When the melting points and fields of stability of each of the mineral compounds in slags have been established, it will be possible to determine the properties of any given slag by examining the nature and amounts of its mineral constituents. Earlier Investigations In 1884 and succeeding years an extensive survey of lead and copper furnace slags was made in Europe by Vogt, and a large part of the present knowledge of the subject is due to his publications.&apos; Vogt&apos;s interest in artificial fusions was directed primarily towards the explanation of problems in igneous and economic geology and his subsequent works have been confined wholly to that subject.

It is common practice, and certainly good business as all of us know, to take care of plant operating equipment. Machinery of any type requires periodic inspection and planned maintenance. With this thought in mind a plant operator should at the end of every shutdown period make regular belt inspections and plan for later appropriate care and maintenance. The points mentioned below are understood well by all of us but are sometimes forgotten because belt conveyors are comparatively easy to operate. Maintenance of any conveyor belt is dependent upon the fundamental characteristics of the two component parts-cover and carcass.

In many metallurgical studies, it is necessary to reveal the composition and structural properties of materials. Usually this is done by etching, but some substances do not etch well or easily. Anodizing is known to provide an alternate treatment in many cases. In general, this technique is simple, often more sensitive to composition differences than etching, has excellent resolution, and provides variable contrast in those elements and alloys which anodize. Here we report the use of anodizing in diffusion studies in the TiCb system. Fig. 1 shows a cross section of the diffusion zone in a TiCb couple. The anodizing has clearly revealed both composition and crystallographic features. The maximum bulk penetration of the titanium into the columbium is marked by a sharp line because of the steep concentration gradient. The titanium grain size and orientation differences are also evident. Variation in the grain size reflects the gradually decreasing columbium concentration.

The United States has never been a large coal exporting nation, and normally such shipments, aside from those to Canada, have been relatively small. Since the first railroad was built across the Allegheny Mountains, the imports have been quite small also, although fairly large tonnages of Canadian coal have moved into the extreme northeastern and northwestern states at times. In Table 21 are shown all data available about these shipments from 1790 to 1939, inclusive.

Johnson, Jr., The innovation of a special meeting under the auspices of the Iron and Steel Committee was well justified, if we accept as a criterion the number of papers presented at the meeting held on Oct. 16 and 17 in New York and the attendance at that meeting. Twenty-four papers were read, and most of these were widely discussed orally, while doubtless the written discussions will be even larger in extent. Discussions will be received up to Dec. 1, 1913. The attendance at the meeting of 106 members and 75 guests is an evidence of the wide anti growing interest in the Institute of men interested chiefly in iron and steel. It is especially interesting to note this large attendance at a meeting where very little of a social nature was introduced into the program. An informal dinner for the men at the Engineers&apos; Club closed the meeting. At this dinner were present about 70 members and guests. One of the Vice-Chairmen and the Secretary of the new Committee on Petroleum and Gas told of the important plans in prospect of that Committee. Brief impromptu speeches by a considerable number of the members and guests were enjoyed. Professor Marburg reiterated his previous assertion that he believed that the Institute and the American Society for Testing Materials, as well as some of the other technical societies, were all fighting for one good cause; that there was room in the field for all of these societies with their various points of view; and that they should march shoulder to shoulder. The success of this dinner was due largely to the efforts of Mr. Johnson who had the affair in charge.
