Considering the really short time that has elapsed since hydro-metallurgical processes of extracting copper from ores have been extensively developed, and the large scale on which this method is practised at Ajo, the successful operation of the plant must excite the admiration of every visitor. The application of the mechanical unloader to the purpose for which it is employed at Ajo is but an extension of the use for which it was originally designed, some 20 years ago, for unloading iron-ore vessels at the lower lake ports. At a time when the maximum output of a single machine, with men shoveling the ore into buckets, did not exceed 40 tons per hour, G. H. Hulett invented and constructed a mechanical unloader with a bucket of 10-ton capacity. This machine was of the steam hydrauIic type, and it is still in operation after nearly 20 years of service. Several more machines of the same type were built, but the difficulties of power transmission, and the rapid development of electrical machinery, soon led to the adoption of electrically operated machines, and practically all of the later installations have been thus equipped. This electrically operated unloader has proved so well fitted for the work that the design of the lake boats has been practically revolutionized, with special view to the ease and rapidity of unloading. It is now possible to unload a 12,000-ton vessel with four machines in a little over 2 hr. This has necessitated an increase in the capacity of the machine, and the largest yet built handles an average load of 17 tons, with a possible maximum of 20 to 21 tons. The Ajo excavator is somewhat simpler in design than the iron-ore unloader, in that it is not provided with a larry. In the unloader, the iron ore, picked up by the bucket, is delivered to a larry or transfer car which runs in the lower chord of the bridge; the larry then delivers the ore either into railroad cars, standing on several parallel tracks, or into the stock pile, thereby saving the time that would be required for the bucket to make the trip. The practical study of corrosion requires consideration of its economic aspects. It must be based on sound scientific principles, but it should be borne in mind that probably the most important object of a corrosion test is to determine what metal in corrosion-resisting construction will produce the greatest operating profit. Thus the corrosion test must be directly connected with money values or it is not a practical corrosion test. This, perhaps unusual, connection between corrosion and economics is partially due to the fact that corrosion deals only with the time factor or duration of equipment, and it is almost the only test which deals with this feature. In these statements a departure is made from the academic definition of the word corrosion and it is done deliberately. The use of the term corrosion is unusual. It is as though we spoke of a tensile test as a "breaking" test. We are not interested primarily in the break but in the strength of the metal. There is no English word which expresses our main interest in corrosion-testing, but let us have clearly in mind that we make corrosion tests to prevent corrosion. Our real interest is in this corrosion-prevention, not in the corrosion. Previous to 1922, it was common comment that "it is impossible to determine the course of corrosion by laboratory testing.'' This statement was true at that time in that the technique of laboratory testing for corrosion resistance was so vague that tests in the laboratory gave untrue results almost as often as true ones. This was so, even in the simple case of determining which one of two metals better resists a given solution. While this is no longer true the number of misleading "corrosion tests" still being ground out by laboratories is too large in the light of our present knowledge. There are two important features of corrosion testing whose neglect is a large contributing factor to misleading results: (1) The economic relations of the corrosion tests to other tests; (2) testing technique. Granduc lies near the Alaskan border in British Columbia, about 600 miles (960 km) north of Vancouver. Prospecting in the area must take place in the short summer months of fog and rain because the winter is bitter cold, with snowfall up to 960 inches (24.4 m) accompanied by avalanches. Despite these difficulties, the mineral ized area was discovered in the 1920's. By 1956, Newmont Mining Corporation had developed mineable ore reserves estimated at 32,500,000 tons of 1.93% copper. Newmont and ASARCO, in a joint venture, then began development of the ore body, which was partially covered by glaciers. It was apparent a concentrator could not be built at the mine site where overland access was impossible due to the weather conditions and the terrain. Years of engineering studies of all possible access routes finally dictated the driving of an 11 mi long (17.6 km) tunnel passing under three glaciers and three mountain ranges to the nearest feasible concentrator site at Tide Lake. Even then, a mountain road subject to an average snowfall of 800 in. (20. 3 m) had to be built 32 mi (51 krn) from the concentrator through Alaska to Stewart, British Columbia, the nearest port. At Stewart, which is located at the head of a fjord 120 mi (192 krn) from the Pacific Odean, a fully equipped marine terminal was built. The tunnel, the lifeline between mine and mill, was to be driven from both ends; however, in 1965, an avalanche occurred at the Leduc portal, killing 26 crew members and wrecking much of the camp. The tunnel was then driven from one heading adjacent to the concentrator site at Tide Lake, a distance of 53,744 ft (16,381 m) to a point under the ore body. The remote location, type of terrain, and bad weather made supply of crews, equipment, and construction materials difficult; but in spite of these extremely adverse conditions, the tunnel crews set many world records. Mineralization throughout the ore zone is generally uniform in grade and composition and is primarily chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite associated with pyrite. Mining is mainly by sublevel caving. After blasting, rubber-tired load-and-haul equipment moves from level to level by means of an internal connecting ramp system on a 15% slope. In the metallurgical treatment of most metallic sulphides it is usually necessary to carry on a roasting-operation. In some cases the raw ore will have to be roasted; in others the intermediary product, matte, produced in smelting the ore; again, both ore and matte may have to be subjected to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Most metallic sulphides, when given an oxidizing-roast, pass through the state of sulphate before they are converted into oxides. All metallic sulphates are completely decomposed by heat, with the exception of those of lead and bismuth, but the temperatures at which decompositions take place vary with the metals. Some metallic sulphates are converted directly into oxides, others first form basic salts. Alkali-earth sulphates show a behavior similar to that of metallic sulphates, while alkali sulphates do not part with their sulphur trioxide even at elevated roasting-temperatures. The older data on the decomposition of metallic sulphates by heat are only approximations. Thus Kerl' gives the order in which metallic sulphates are decomposed with increasing temperatures as (Ag2, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Mn, Pb) SO,. More recent statenlents give definite temperatures and modify the formerly accepted order of decomposition. But the temperatures given by various observers do not agree. The reasons for this are to be found mainly in the method and manner of carrying out experiments. Four methods have been used: 1. THIS paper presents an experimental verification of some of the predictions made by one of us' concerning 'the influence of certain conditions of casting upon the size and position of the pipe', and the position of the segregate, in steel ingots. The predictions which we have been able to verify are the following A. That the pipe is shortened and the segregate raised 1. By slow casting; 2. By casting with the large end up instead of down; 3. By retarding the cooling of the top, e.g., by means of a sinking-head. B. That the pipe is shortened by slow cooling. C. That the pipe and segregate lie in the last freezing-part. Our procedure was to cast ingots of wax (commercially pure stearic acid) containing a little bright green copper oleate (usually 1.5 per cent.) under varying conditions; to saw each ingot open along a longitudinal plane passing through its axis ; and to examine the longitudinal section thus laid bare. In order to make the segregate or enriched part more distinct in color from the impoverished part, a very little red cerasine was added. An experiment which will be described later showed that the cerasine itself does not segregate markedly, if at all. Hence we may assume that the strong contrasts between the green and red shown in so many of our ingots are due, not to segregation of cerasine, but to that of the green oleate, in the wax which in itself is uniformly reddened with cerasine.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, US zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the US, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in US production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large minable ore bodies: additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the stratabound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the US is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the US, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district .

The fatigue strength, fatigue hardening, and effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent age hardening of supersaturated Al(Cu) solid solutions have been determined as functions of alloy composition and temperature. The fatigue strength/tensile strength ratios, determined at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, decreased with increase in alloy content for all temperatures, but the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at -195°C decreased much more rapidly than did the ratios for 150" and 25°C. This suggested that strain aging and/or age hardening occurred during tests at higher temperatures. Additionally, the F.S./U.T.S. ratios at 150°C exceeded those at 25°C for all compositions, indicating greater strengthening during fatigue at 150°C. The effect of fatigue or tensile deformation at 150°, 25°, and -195°C on subsequent age hardening showed that the deformatzon increased the rate of precipitation and indicated that mechanically produced vacancies were probably formed during deformation. Fatigue hardening was studied at 150°, 25°, and -195°C, and the effect of room-temperature rests after 10 and 100 cycles was examined. The results confirmed that strain aging occurred at the higher temperatures . DURING the last 15 years various mechanisms of fatigue crack nucleation and growth based on dislocation and vacancy interactions, operating singly or collectively, have been proposed. The probable consensus of present opinion is that the fatigue process in pure metals essentially involves dislocation interactions, and that vacancies formed by such interactions play a minor or inconsequential role. However, there is some evidence that age-hardened alloys tend to overage during fatigue, probably by local vacancy-enhanced diffusion, and strain aging also might be important in selected cases. Furthermore, it has been established that the behavior of quenched-in vacancies in Al(Cu) and other solid solutions is composition-sensitive. Therefore, it seemed worthwhile to investigate various aspects of the fatigue behavior of supersaturated Al(Cu) alloys and to examine the results in terms of vacancy-enhanced effects. EXPERIMENTAL The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from 99.994 wt pet A1 and OFHC copper, the latter containing 0.04 pet 0 as the principal impurity. Six alloys were made, containing, by actual analysis, 0.58, 0.96, 1.96, 2.85, 4.45, and 5.51 wt pet Cu. They were induction-melted in air in graphite crucibles, cast as 7-in. by 7/8-in.-diam rods in graphite molds, and hot-rolled to 5/8 in. diam. The experimental work was a three-part program involving the determination of a) 10' cycle fatigue stresses as a function of alloy composition and temperature; b) the effect of fatigue deformation on subsequent aging of the supersaturated alloys; and c) fatigue hardening as a function of alloy composition and temperature. For determining the 105 cycle fatigue stresses, a portion of the 5/8-in. stock was machined into Krouse rotating cantilever beam fatigue specimens, 2 in. in length by 1/4 in. minimum diameter. These were tested at +150°, 25°, and -195°C (liquid nitrogen) on a Krouse high-speed machine, with special weights to provide lower -than-normal loading ranges, this being necessitated by the small load requirements of those alloys of lower copper content. For the high-temperature tests a small resistance heater was designed to clear the collets and fit in between the chucks, while for the low-temperature tests a hollow nylon cylinder was used, having closed ends drilled to pass a fatigue specimen, and positioned similarly to the heater. A plexiglass container completely enclosed the fatigue machine; rubber gloves fixed to ports in the walls enabled the machine to be operated from outside the box. A tray of magnesium perchlorate dried the air in the container and prevented both atmospheric corrosion fatigue at room and elevated temperatures and troublesome ice build-up at low temperatures. A total of ten to fifteen specimens was used for each combination of alloy composition and temperature. The result of each test was plotted on a standard S-N diagram, and the next stress was selected on the basis of the trends indicated by previous specimens. In this manner a small portion of the S-N diagram was constructed, and the 105 cycle fatigue stress obtained. CARL HENRICH (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with much interest the discussions of my paper by Messrs. A. S. Dwight, E. P. Mathewson, Win. B. Boggs, Jos. W. Richards, and W. C. Smith. Mr. Dwight's acknowledgment that he always-in lead smelting¬obtained better results by figuring A1203 as an acid in his slags, I may take as a confirmation of my views, notwithstanding his later conversion by, the late T. S. Austin to the latter's empirical view and way of neglecting the consideration of A1203 altogether in the composition of slags-letting the slags "dissolve" in Al203. I have a strong suspicion that Mr. Austin, in a large custom smelting plant at El Paso, has been able to keep the alumina percentage of his slags sufficiently low, not to give him much trouble, although I have also a suspicion that his furnace foreman may have had a somewhat differing opinion of the practical working of the "dissolving" theory,, whenever its applicability was tested to its limits. That Austin should have conceived the notion that the Ca of CaF2 would enter into a slag as CaO, seems hardly in accord with the recognized ability of that late metallurgist. It is a well-recognized fact that even small amounts of CaF2 will reduce the viscosity of a slag; but I did not think anyone ever had an idea that CaF2, in some mysterious way, parted with its F and coupled itself with 0 to satisfy a craving for CaO on the part of 802-least of all in a lead furnace. The "dissolving" theory for CaF2 was doubtless appropriate, and an improvement on figuring the Ca of CaF2 as CaO to satisfy the demand of Si02 for RO bases. However, I cannot understand the rationality of extending this "dissolving" theory to A1203 and to ZnO. It would be interesting to have more specific data from Mr. Mathewson in regard to the actual composition-analyses-of the slags made, when he had these unusually high alumina slags in Colorado. We "old" smelters all know that within certain limits, usually found out by rather tough experience, we could safely "disregard" A1203. In fact, I believe, we never really analyzed for alumina, except in slag analyses, when we

A new pozzolanic composition has been developed for cementing oil wells where moderate to high temperatures prevail. This material is an entirely different concept to other oil well cementing materials, such as portland cements, cements containing additives, or liquid resins. Its characteristics are such that it is not, at present, recommended for use at temperatures less than 140º F. It can he either accelerated or retarded across a wide range of well conditions. This new cement is composed of a pozzolanic material, hydrated lime, and a chemical activator to give it early initial strength. This material can be used in wells from 6,000 to 18,000 or more feet where temperature conditions are similar to those along the Gulf Coast. This cement, when set, has no soluble portion subject to leaching or any compounds that should be attacked by sulfate waters or brines. For this reason, it should be permanent when placed adjacent to formations carrying any type of fluid. The compressive strengths in 24 hours are more than adequate for wells where temperatures are 140°F and higher. These values ore in excess of many other types of cementing composition presently in use in the field. This pozzolanic composition does not retrogress in strength at high temperatures as do some other types of cementing materials. The slurry weights of this material will vary slightly according to the specific gravity and water requirements of the pozzolnn itself. The materials covered herein will mix from 13.5 to 14.3 lb/gal, and will have a waiting-on-cement time comparable to other materials used under the same conditions. Economically speaking, this composition is less expensive than either portland cements or retarded cements presently being used under deep well conditions. INTRODUCTION Pozzolans are siliceous material which, though not cementitious in themselves, contain constituents which at ordinary temperatures will combine with lime in the presence of water to form compounds which have a low solubility and possess cementing properties. The use of pozzolanic materials dates back many hundreds of years and both the ancient Greeks and Romans were aware that certain volcanic deposits, if finely ground and mixed with lime and sand, yielded a mortar which possessed special properties. Generally, the early strengths of such materials were rather weak and were considered insufficient for modern commercial usages. Pozzolanic materials have been used extensively with portland cement in mass concrete to obtain special properties. In recent years, large quantities of certain pozzolanic materials have been used successfully admixed into portland cements for oil well cementing. Pozzolans, being reactive silicates, will combine with the free lime that is an inherent component of set portland cements and thereby. becomes cementitious themselves. POZZOLANS FOR OIL WELL CEMENTING There are many types of pozzolans, some of which are more reactive than others. The quality of the pozzoIan depends on the degree of reactivity, chemical composition, fineness, and other less well understood factors. J. A. RICHARDSON[t]-Mr. Stuckey's account of the geology of the kaolins of North Carolina suggests that they exhibit some features similar to those of the Malay Peninsula. About one half of British Malaya (some 26,000 square miles) is occupied at the surface by igneous rocks, of which granite and its associated derivatives constitute fully 90 pct. The average granite is a biotic variety. It is predominantly potassic but carries, in addition, notable amounts of soda and lime so that albite and albiteoligoclase are generally common constituents of the rock. The minor derivatives from granite "magma" likewise include potassic and sodi-potassic members. Decomposition of the granitic rocks has led to the formation of kaolin in many localities, but, in general, the deposits are rather small and, at present, none is exploited commercially. True primary or residual kaolins (as defined by Stuckey; p. 48 Vol. 173, p. 2 TP 2219) have been developed from feldspar veins, pegmatites and from other granitic differentiates which cut through the larger masses of granite; they are usually small and narrow. Kaolin has been derived from aplite, quartz porphyry, quartz micro-porphyry, felsites and microgranites belonging to a complex known as the Chegar Perah-Pulai intrusion in northwest Pahang and southwest Kelantan. The bulk of the component rocks has been more or less strongly sheared. Kaolin-like end products have been formed from both sheared and nonsheared varieties. Kaolin has been formed also by the complete breakdown of trondjemite flanking the northwestern and western margins of the complex Bukit Ranjut syenite intrusion in northwest Pahang. These trondjemites range in composition from essentially quartz-free albiteplagioclasites to quartz-free microcline rocks; they are, in effect, the syenitic homologues of white sodic and potassic granite-aplites. The granites in Malaya have generally undergone more or less severe surficial weathering leading to the production of a spongy and rather cellular or a soft "mealy" material (sandy clay) down to depths of about 100 ft; in places the granite is strongly decomposed down to 150 ft. There has occurred, therefore, widespread partial kaolinization, but, in general, no extensive deposits of good quality kaolin seem to have been formed by these processes of decay. Frequently, the katamorphic processes of desilicification have advanced beyond the production of kaolin towards the formation of lateritic end products. The more important Malayan kaoiins seem to be confined to the western alluvial plains, particularly in areas either where granite crops out at surface, or where it forms the bedrock of the alluvium. There are numerous excellent examples around Gopeng and elsewhere in the Kinta Valley of Perak. Such kaolins belong to Stuckey's groups of secondary deposits, and, like them, these also may be bedded. Field observations have established the existence of what for want of a better name is referred to by the Malayan Geological Survey as "granite wash." It is believed that granite, undergoing extensive deeply penetrative and probably rather rapid destruction under humid tropical weathering (temperature around 90°F; rainfall about 100 in. per annum; high humidity) "flowed," was moved by "creep" and, in addition, probably slumped in large waterlogged masses of sandy clay from topographic salients onto the adjacent flats. Either during this period of transmigration or later when the sludged granite detritus, after having more or less come to rest, was attacked by flowing water, differential sorting and erosion took place with the result that the resorted debris was moved and later deposited as bedded alluvium. Synopsis.-A description of the working of the mills of this company and the metallurgical practice in vogue, by which a remarkably. complex silver ore, averaging 54 oz. of silver per ton (run-of-mine ore), is treated to give a 95.66 per cent. extraction. The main features of the, processes are: The cyanide amalgamation of the high-grade ore. The cyanide treatment of the low-grade ore, after extremely fine grinding and close classification, in a caustic soda solution. The use of a wet desulphurizing process to break up refractory silver minerals. The substitution of aluminum dust for zinc dust as a precipitant. The recovery and shipment of over 13,000,000 oz. of silver in bullion at. 997 to 999 fine since this metallurgy was inaugurated, about 2.5 years ago. On the completion and successful operation of the mill to treat their . high-grade ore,1 the Nipissing Mining Co., under the general management of R. B. Watson, started a series of investigations of the possible treatment of the low-grade ore by the cyanide process, so that they would be in a position to market only silver bullion. These tests were run in July, 1911, on a large scale, by G. H. Clevenger, on an average mixture of Nipissing ore. The results obtained by a partial amalgamation followed by cyanide treatment gave an extraction varying from 90 to 93 per cent. and were sufficiently encouraging to warrant Charles Butters, the company's Consulting Metallurgist, in recommending that the new low-grade ore mill under contemplation should be a cyanide mill, instead of a concentrator. The cost of such a mill, capable of treating 200 tons per day, to obtain a 90 per cent. extraction at a working cost of $3 per ton of ore treated, was estimated at $250,000.

J.-I am so thoroughly convinced of the growing importance of underground work in the production of limestone that I had the author make a detailed study of limestone mining for the Bureau of Mines and prepare a report on the principles of limestone mining. Many limestone operators, long accustomed to open¬pit work, are being forced to mining. About 6 months ago I thought there were twenty-five or thirty underground limestone operations in the United States but the author has been finding new ones until his list now runs nearer sixty. Some of these are very extensive; one at least has 4 ½ miles of underground workings. There is an ever-expanding field for the engineer in the operation of limestone mines and quarries. Some of the larger companies realize the need of skilled engineering advice, but many of the companies regard the engineer as an unnecessary expense. Although almost every metal mine, even those handling only a few hundred tons of ore per month, employs a mining engineer, many limestone operations ten times as large employ no mining engineers. With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and 55.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.

Instantaneous outbursts of gas in underground workings are similar in effect to great blasts of explosives, but without heat effects. Fortunately they occur only in a few localities in exceptional coal fields of the world and under exceptional geologic conditions. Such violent outbursts should not be compared with the ordinary outflows of gas into coal mines or with explosions of gas and dust. The phenomenon is essentially one of gas held in circumscribed areas under very high pressure and as a mining face or heading approaches such a place and the mining excavation sufficiently weakens the natural surrounding dam or shell, this is burst by the pressure just as by the discharge of a mass of explosives. The outbursts, so far as known to the writer, have been confined to coal beds and have not occurred in other mineral deposits. Hence, as discussed later, he believes that it is the relation of the gases to the coal material that is a factor in conjunction with others in producing conditions which permit the phenomena to occur when mining is done. The gases in most instantaneous outbursts have been hydrocarbon gases but in two coal fields they have been definitely found to be chiefly or wholly carbon dioxide. One of these localities in which CO2 outbursts have been frequent and have caused loss of life is in the southern part of the Gard basin, near Alais, in southern France. In 1919, the writer visited the Fontaine mine in this field the day following the occurrence of an outburst by which two men were smothered by carbon dioxide and fine dust. After 24 hr. the CO2 had not been entirely removed by the ventilating current. Occasional outbursts of CO2 have also occurred in other small basins in France, causing accidents, as in Puy-de-Dome. However, mines in the Gard basin, north of those in which CO2 outbursts have occurred, have experienced hydrocarbon gas outbursts. In the Lower Silesian coal field, Germany, there is a group of mines which have been subject to many instantaneous CO2 outbursts, some causing serious accidents, but the greatest disaster occurred recently

RETURNS already received from a current survey of the enrolment of students in the mineral technology schools indicate a degree of activity and prosperity in those schools never before equalled. The returns are as yet too meager for accurate analysis, but those at hand point LO considerable increase in the metallurgical and petroleum engineering groups, and indicate that the total of 5011 two years ago in the United States schools will be substantially increased. Generally speaking, the enrolment is not only maximum in quantity but optimum in quality. Better income has sent the boys back to school, but the improved employment conditions have somewhat reduced the number of graduate students. Laboratories are commonly filled to capacity, in some instances overcrowded. Increased enrolment of foreign students from both Canada and South America is noticeable.

THIS paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. PIPES EXAMINED The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from ¾ in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often 100 to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is 100° to 160°F. WATER SUPPLIES The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table I are characterized by relatively low hardness, low alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. A characteristic of all of these waters is that they do not deposit a protective mineral coating as do waters with high bicarbonate of lime content, which would be reflected
