"This paper describes the general layout of the environmental monitoring scheme at Devco 's No. 26 Colliery, including wall face ventilation, fan performance and methane drainage, and then goes on to discuss the sensors, the outstation layout, the surf ace control room and the protection of the system.IntroductionCape Breton coal mines have been pioneers in the use of the latest technology in mining coal on this continent. To mention just one example, continuous methane monitoring at the coal face was started in 1976 and the idea of automatically stopping the face conveyor during high gas levels using the face signalling system was conceived and developed by CBDC engineers.With the introduction of remote environmental monitoring, No. 26 Colliery will be the first underground coal mine in Canada and possibly in North America to have computer-based comprehensive environmental monitoring.Traditionally, surveillance of the mine environment has been based mainly on periodic checks by portable or hand-held monitors. Although this method proved adequate, it has some limitations, namely:1) restricted 'number of observations and samples;2) relatively long time between taking measurements and availability of results for assessment.With remote monitoring, the above limitations are overcome because (a) monitoring is continuous and (b) monitored data are updated quickly (typically 5-7 sec.). Remote monitoring also provides a centralized 'information center' at the surface from where the entire mine environment can be monitored. Details of modes in which data can be displayed and features available at the location will be discussed later in the paper."

"Samples with contrasting gold mineralization were studied quantitatively prior to metallurgical tests. The AD samples are coarser-grained and characterized by abundant Sb minerals (jamesonite, berthierite, stibnite). The finer-grained MW sample has abundant pyrite and pyrrhotite, with arsenopyrite and galena next in abundance. A large number of gold mineral particles were determined by SEM investigation of hydroseparation concentrates, ranging from 150 to 597 per sample. The grain-size distribution of the gold minerals shows evidence of bimodal grain-size distributions (volume %), with the coarse fraction being most significant in sample MW-1 (maximum ECD=308µm). The coarsest gold minerals in the AD samples range from 139µm to 281µm ECD.The deportment of gold minerals is as electrum, aurostibite, native gold, and a possible new mineral (AuNiSb4). Gold also occurs in nisbite. The gold minerals are dominated by electrum in three samples and aurostibite is next in abundance. The major gold minerals are probably representative of three stages of gold mineralization. The first stage is represented by electrum, which is partly to completely replaced by Sb-rich mineralization forming aurostibite, and the last stage is native gold, often occurring as rims on one or the other earlier gold mineral. The gold minerals are strongly associated with sulphides in the AD samples (55 to 60 vol.%). At the grind used for the hydroseparation the liberated gold mineral quantity (volume %) is also significant, ranging from 65% for sample MW-1 to 30 to 37% for the AD samples.INTRODUCTIONThe Clarence Stream deposit is located 70 km south-southwest of Fredericton and 25 km northnorthwest of St. George, south-western New Brunswick, near the international boundary with Maine (Fig. 1)."

Even though similar ore deposit styles (e.g. porphyry Cu, IOCG, Ni-laterites, calcrete hosted U, etc.) have many similar characteristics, each ore deposit is unique. An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. In the preparation of illustrations to accompany reports of investigations concerning particle shapes of various natural and manufactured materials proposed for use as fine aggretates in concrete structures, it was found that stereoscopic views of such materials presented the information much more effectively than the usual two-dimensional photographs. With the whole-hearted cooperation of the Photographic Section, a technique was developed in the petrographic laboratory of the Concrete Research Division, U.S. Corps of Engineers, at Clinton, Miss., for simple and rapid preparation of paired stereoscopic photographs and micrographs. The method requires only equipment which is usually part of the general stock of any laboratory, and it is adaptable for all purposes in which three-dimensional views would be found superior to ordinary photographs.

Underground or In-situ Coal Gasification (UCG or UICG), though not a new concept, is now attracting considerable global attention as a viable process to provide a "clean" and economic fuel from coal. Applying improved UICG technology to gasify deep, thin, and low-grade coal seams could vastly increase the amount of exploitable reserves. However, it is imperative that further development of this technology is based on integrating UCG practices and potential environmental impacts with accepted sustainability frameworks and processes. This paper evaluates the potential of UCG to conform to frameworks such as MMSD (Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development), Natural Step and Green Engineering, in order to define its "sustainable" potential. The paper also discusses the potential contributions of UCG to sustainability during its design, operation, closure, and post-closure phases.

"The technical and economic feasibility or re-processing hundreds of millions of tons of tailings in a number of historic gold tailings dams in the Witwatersrand area of South Africa is being investigated. The objective is to recover uranium and residual gold from the tailings, as well as to oxidize the sulphides to eliminate long term environmental liabilities associated with acid mine drainage. The tailings from the re-processing plant will be re-deposited in a new area far from urbanization, allowing for the rehabilitation of the real estate currently occupied by these historic tailings.The first step in the process involves a mild-regrind and mild acid leach of the tailings (pH 2.5 to 3.0) to dissolve up to 40% of the uranium. This uranium is recovered directly from the pulp by resin in pulp (RIP) with a strong base resin. The RIP tails are then treated by flotation to recover a rougher pyrite concentrate, and flotation tailings that are discarded. The rougher concentrate is cleaned to produce a final pyrite concentrate and cleaner scavenger tailings, and the pyrite concentrate is oxidized in an autoclave to leach uranium and generate acid. The autoclave discharge is combined with the cleaner scavenger tails, and the acid and ferric ions generated in the autoclave are used to leach more uranium and oxidize more sulphide in the cleaner tails. The product from the concentrate leach circuit is processed by resin in pulp for uranium recovery, followed by neutralization, cyanidation and carbon in pulp for gold recovery.The rougher float tails may be further treated to recover gold that was not recovered in flotation, but which had been liberated from the old dumps by natural oxidation of some of the pyrite over many decades. The float tails would be neutralized and treated by cyanidation and CIL to recover this liberated gold.All parts of the flowsheet have been extensively tested in the laboratory, and the critical elements of flotation, pressure oxidation and resin in pulp have been demonstrated in pilot plants. The results of the hydrometallurgical investigations are presented here."

The aqueous chemistry of niobium and tantalum compounds with hydrofluoric acid is a mature field of investigation. In contrast, very little attention has been paid to reactions of these compounds in non-aqueous environments. Similarly, reactions of elemental fluorine with niobium and tantalum compounds have received little more than cursory attention in literature. This work discusses the isothermal reaction kinetics derived from thermogravimetry, using a less redundant approach than is currently the standard. We also discuss the most likely kinetic models for this reaction.

While mine backfill plants are becoming increasingly more automated and instrumented, especially with paste fill operations, underground backfill distribution systems have hardly changed over the years. While fill properties are appropriately measured in the preparation plants, as backfill enters the mine borehole, the technology for control, data gathering and reporting is somewhat lacking. Mines typically experience problems with borehole and pipeline plugging, pipeline bursting, bulkhead failure and exposed fill sloughing. With adequate instrumentation of the backfill system it is possible to obtain a complete, continuous and detailed picture of the entire filling operation from preparation to post-pour. Good data will, over time, provide the basis for needed improvements of backfill systems and will be essential to safer, more efficient and less costly fill practices. This paper will review the areas of the filling operations where monitoring would prove critical to eliminate failures such as pipelines, bulkheads, fill exposures, stope walls, etc. The types of monitoring systems currently available will be reviewed and potential areas for development will be highlighted.

In-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT ?IR/IRS) has been extended to study oleate adsorption at a calcite surface. The birefringent and transmission limitations of calcite were overcome by using an appropriately designed optical setup and a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. An adsorption isotherm was determined at pH 9.2 and room temperature. Comparison with the fluorite/oleate adsorption isotherm determined by the same technique indicates that oleate abstraction by calcite can be as much as one order of magnitude larger than that by fluorite. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of the fluorite/oleate surface is greater for equivalent adsorption densities as indicated by contact angle measurements and flotation results. The monolayer region has been confirmed to be chemisorbed oleate at both calcite and fluorite surfaces. Furthermore, multichannel laser Raman spectroscopy (MLRS) showed that chemisorbed oleate at the fluorite surface undergoes a double-bond reaction with oxygen to form an epoxide/polyether complex. Such a reaction, however, could not be detected at the calcite surface. These phenomena are discussed in terms of the intrinsic surface properties of the mineral systems as well as the adsorption density and the cross-linking/polymerization reaction of the adsorbed oleate film.

A case study is presented on the optimization of cable bolting patterns in cut-and-fill stopes at the Chikla Mine, MOIL, India. Rock mass characterization, using Bieniawski’s RMR and Barton’s Q, indicated that the stopes lie in the “no supports required” to “spot bolting required” support categories. In contrast, the current practice of cable bolting in a 2.0 m by 2.0 m grid pattern for stope widths less than 12 m displays different results. Numerical modelling results are in line with the rock mass characterization study. It can be affirmed, as well, that no cable is carrying rock loads greater than 5 t. This fact is derived from observational behaviour of the crown pillar of an experimental stope with open stoping operations and hanging cables in the cut-and-fill stopes of the mine. An increase in the cable bolting grid spacing is, hence, recommended for implementation by mine management, based on the study described in subsequent sections. It is also suggested that the mine adopt the open stoping method, provided results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program in an experimental stope with a cable bolting grid of 2.5 m square are favourable.

"Une recherche debutee en 1987 tente de cerner divers éléments ayant un impact sur la productivite miniére, de facon à améliorer la planification des operations souterraines. II a été possible de recueillir jusqu'à trente variables dans sept opérations minières differentes du Nord-Ouest québécois. Cette présentation rend compte de quelques résultats préliminaires obtenus à l’une d'entre elle. Entre autres, elle montre comment une association entre une analyse de régression multiple et un logiciel d'optimisation (OPTIMUL) peut servir à une application particulière de la planification d'une opération minière du Québec. Plus spécifiquement, la présentation montre comment une quantité appropriée de ANFO et de TOVEX peut maximiser la quantilé de minerai cassé, minimiser les couts de sautage ou encore minimiser les coûts d'explosifs par tonne de roche cassée, en se basant sur une série de contraintes réalistes provenant de la mine.ABSTRACTA study, underway since 1987, tries to evaluate factors affecting mines' productivity. Information has been collected from seven underground mines in Quebec and this paper shows preliminary results from one. In particular, it shows how a combination of multiple regression analysis, mathematical programming and a set of realistic mine constraints can be used for a particular application of mine planning. More specifically, the paper shows a parallel between maximizing production of tons of broken are, minimizing explosives costs or minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are by an appropriate selection of ANFO and TOVEX quantity of explosives. Finally, the paper shows that minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are is the best alternative to follow providing a special optimization program can be set up."

The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

Alkaline leaching with sodium carbonate solution adjusted to pH 9·5 to 10·0 preferentially dissolves thorium from a mixture of rare earth and thorium hydroxides. Rare earth sodium carbonates form in the alkaline leaching stage.These are converted to rare earth oxides for use as optical and ophthalmic polishing agents. Quadrivalent cerium is extracted under similar alkaline leaching conditions.INTRODUCTIONAustralia has made significant contributions to mineral chemistry and mineral dressing. As often happens with an industrially immature country, research investigations often outstrip the ability or desire of commerce to exploit them. It is wrong to think exclusively in terms of export of raw materials. Imagination assists in developing world trends. The chemical utilization of mineral sands has interested a group of investigators, chiefly at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.) and, more recently, in the mining industry itself. From an international point of view the highlight of this work was Newnham's (1960) process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium. Earlier work at C.S.I.R.O. investigated the chlorination of rutile, zircon, and monazite. Assuming that titanium tetrachloride would be available in large quantities in the post war years, extensive work was done by Kraitzer, McTaggart, and Winter (1948) on organic compounds of titanium. This work led to the development of heat resistant paints, plastic compositions, and improved organic protective coatings that predated overseas work by up to seven years. (Post, Shiihara and Schwartz, 1961; Anon, 1955). Contributions were made to the production of refractory hard metals (Kraitzer, 1949; Kraitzer and Newnham, 1956). Pilkington and Wylie (1947) and Urie (1947) investigated the production of rare earths from monazite by an acid process.

The development of a process for upgrading offgrade titanium metal by electrorefining in molten salt led to an investigation of the electrotransfer characteristics of selected metals when alloyed with the titanium to be refined. Previous tests on seven binary titanium alloys showed that the degree of transfer of the alloying constituent depends on the constituent and on the operating procedurese.5 This report describes tests on electrorefining ternary mixtures of titanium with selected metallic elements. Ten alloys were prepared from high purity titanium and 2-1/2 percent of each of the metal pairs selected from the same elements used in the binary study; manganese, vanadium, chromium, zirconium, tin, molybdenum, aluminum. Operating variables were similar to those investigated in the binary alloy study that gave minimum alloy metal transfer. The data presented indicate the transfer characteristics of the various metals and combinations tested relative to each other.
