In the United States the performance characteristics of permissible explosives are controlled by routine tests, which include firing the explosive into a gallery filled with a methane-air mixture. These tests are made by the staff of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines and, are similar, in general, to those employed in other countries. This control has helped to reduce the frequency of accidents involving the ignition of firedamp by explosives but has not clarified the basic causes, of the ignition. To advance this control and to minimize potential hazards further, this fundamental knowledge is needed. Some of the results of recent research on the causes of the ignition are described herein. NATURE OF THE PROBLEM When an explosive ignites firedamp in the gallery tests, the source of the ignition must be one or more of the emissions from the steel borehole. It has been accepted generally that these emissions are (1) particles, (2) the shock wave, and (3) hot gases and flames. Photographs show that the shock wave emerges from the borehole first, followed closely by hot gases. At first the velocities of these are high and approximately equal, but the velocity of the gases decreases more' rapidly than that of the shock wave, and by the time the reactions causing the flame are complete the shock wave travels in an otherwise undisturbed medium. The particles are originally enveloped in the hot gases but some soon begin to break through and eventually out-distance the shock wave. The Los Angeles Metro Gold Line Eastside Extension (MGLEE) extends Metro’s light rail system to the densely populated and growing East Los Angeles communities. Much of the 6 mile alignment consists of at-grade track, but the project also features a1.7 mile underground segment in cut-and-cover and twin-bored tunnel structures. In light of past experiences with open shield construction, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) specified, for the first time, use of Pressure Face Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM’s) to advance tunnels through soft ground. This paper describes the history of the tunnel design, construction management, and construction methods adopted that resulted in successfully completing the tunneling segment.

This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.

Subsurface disposal of oil-field brines was practiced in Oklahoma on a limited scale as early as 1925. The technique of subsurface injection has been improved immensely and has been applied with varying success in many oil-producing areas in Oklahoma, and elsewhere. This method of disposal, however, is only one of several methods available to operators of oil-producing properties, but, in contrast with usual methods of handling brines on the surface it eliminates the damaging effect of mineralized water on fresh-water supplies, vegetation, and aquatic and other animal life. Other methods of brine disposal approved by regulatory agencies in some States include (1) impounding in impervious ponds and solar evaporation, (2) controlled diversion into surface waters, and (3) recovery of the mineral salts of the brine. In most, States where oil is produced regulatory bodies authorize the use of one or more of these methods of brine disposal. In Oklahoma, for example, the Oklahoma Planning and Resources Board of the Conservation Commission has been authorized to adopt whatever methods or means may be necessary to prevent contamination by mineralization of all potable waters within the State.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the cost of mine permitting and compliance with environmental regulations in Alaska. It discusses permitting requirements and procedures for placer and lode mines. Placer miners must comply with recently established (1988) water quality regulations and effluent treatment requirements. To estimate the impact differing treatment options (no recycle, 100% recycling, and flocculation) have on a placer mine's rate of return, three models (1,500, 1,000, and 500 yd3/d) were simulated. Rates of return for these models show a marked decrease as effluent treatment is increased. The incremental increase in operating cost from one treatment option to the next is relatively small; however the opportunity cost of lost production if' significant and accounts for the decreasing rate of return with increased effluent treatment. Lode mines face greater costs for permitting and compliance than similarly sized placer mines as a result of the impact of the operation. Direct permitting costs for lode mines range from 2 to 6% of total project cost, with 4% the most common figure cited by industry. Total costs for permitting and compliance are approximately double those for permitting. Indirect costs associated with compliance include mitigation, monitoring, and reclamation.

Ground control problems at surface mining operations can occur for a variety of reasons. Stress, gravity loading, rock strength, geology, pore pressure, weather effects, underground workings, and many other factors contribute to slope instabilities that range from small rock falls to massive slides of material. While some of these failures can be predicted or controlled by preventive measures, each year many completely unexpected failures occur. Current methods for monitoring generally involve measuring displacements at a few, selected points in and around the suspected area of instability. While most of the displacements along these points will be in a downslope direction, freeze-thaw cycles of water-filled joints, horizontal stresses or pressure, buoyancy in saturated soils, human measurement errors, or other situations can produce deformation in almost any direction, even without any instability in the slope. Determination of which, if any of the observed movements represents a potential hazard is essential. Because of the enormous surface area of many large open-pit mines, several varieties and scales of instability can occur. Small, unexpected rock falls may indeed be more hazardous than a massive failure that involves slow displacement of material over a longer period of time. Complete vigilance to detect all small potential falling blocks is neither feasible nor economical and certainly is not attainable using today's most common point displacement monitoring techniques. As part of an on-going study at the Spokane Research Laboratory, several new methods for monitoring slope instabilities are being investigated. This paper describes the potential adaptation of systems such as interferometric synthetic aperture radar, imaging spectroscopy, and time-domain reflectometry, to slope monitoring and design.

Twenty-sixth Sir Julius Wernher memorial lecture, presented at the Tunnelling '94 symposium held in London, 5-7 July 1994. In describing 18 projects with which he has been involved over a period of 36 years, the author aims to illustrate how technological change and an increase in scientific knowledge have influenced tunnelling practice, which he nevertheless maintains does continue to be an art. Tunnels discussed are: the Silver Street, Blackfriars, Whitechapel, St. Paul's and Waterloo Post Office tunnels, 1958-1969; metro tunnels on the Victoria Line, London, 1962-1970; the introduction of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), 1971-1978, in the Empingham reservoir diversion tunnels in Rutland, the bentonite tunnelling machine experiment at New Cross, the Southern tunnel water main section of the London Ring Main and the Warrington sewer in Cheshire; tunnels in rock 1975-1981, for the Lune Wyre and Megget Manor aquaducts, Weymouth sea outfall and Bristol interceptor sewer; Priestley TBM tunnels 1969-1982; the Greater Cairo wastewater project 1983-1987; Anacostia River crossing, Washington DC 1985-1987; the Channel Tunnel 1987-1992; and the Storebaelt eastern tunnel in Denmark, 1992-1994.

"SynopsisAlthough women all over the world have been involved in mining activities for centuries, mining has always been considered a very masculine industry due to its heavily male-dominated workforce as well as the physicality of mining work. The mining industry has not been an obvious career choice and preferred place of employment for women; women were mainly employed in administrative and advisory positions. Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from being employed in underground operations in South Africa, but the Mines Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996, removed these restrictions. In addition, new mining legislation (the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, No. 28 of 2002) and the accompanying Mining Charter make specific provisions for the inclusion of women in core mining activities and require 10% of core positions to be filled by women.This article voices perceptions of the physical ability of women employed in core mining positions. Findings are drawn from empirical work undertaken at platinum, phosphate, and copper mines. Quantitative and qualitative research paradigms are used. It is evident that women find it extremely difficult to perform mine work that requires physical strength and stamina. Practical recommendations, informed by the literature review and empirical findings, are made with the objective of contributing to the sustainable deployment of women in the mining industry.IntroductionFor many years, mining has been considered the foundation of the South African economy. Although the mining industry in South Africa is currently under considerable pressure and experiences various challenges, including escalating operational costs, electricity tariff increases, safety-related issues and associated production stoppages, poor productivity, labour unrest, and reduced demand both globally and domestically, it remains a key contributor to the national economy and development of the country (IDC, 2013, p. 9).Until 1994, women were legislatively prohibited from meaningful participation in the mining industry and were denied access to skills and jobs, self-employment, and entrepreneurship. The newly elected democratic government in 1994 initiated substantial socio-political and economic transformation in South Africa. Nearly every sector in the country was transformed and re-shaped, primarily through sector-specific legislation, but also through negotiations between government, industry, and labour unions to create and refine the so-called sector charters, which included the Mining Charter. The vision of the new regime, the African National Congress (ANC), was to ‘transfer power to the people and transform society into a non-racial, non-sexist, united, democratic one, and change the manner in which wealth is shared, in order to benefit all the people’ (ANC, 2007)."

A study at the Idaho mine revealed that, despite the apparent randomness of seismic events, common characteristics defined five recurring types. These characteristics included the geological structure that slipped, the first-motion pattern and the location and intensity of damage. Many large events caused little or no damage, and where it did occur it was concentrated at intersections between slipping structures and mine openings. Of 39 events between 1989 and 1994 with local magnitudes of 2.5 or more, 10 were caused by slip on bedding planes in the southern limb of the mine, 6 occurred near the vein along a set of near-vertical faults that form the central shear zone, 8 were strike-slip events on the Southern Control Fault, 4 were by slip on the vein itself and 10 involved strike-slip and/or dip-slip movement along the North Control Fault. Electricity supply constraints in SA are increasingly challenging mines to operate more energy efficiently without reducing production output. Mining compressed air systems are well known to be operated inefficiently and are also a major power consumer. Two available and proven technologies can be applied on new and existing mines to replace or and optimise available compressed air facilities and achieve meaningful reductions in electrical power consumption; ? Hydro powered drilling and mining is significantly more energy efficient than compressed air and provides drilling rates that are twice as fast. ? Stope drilling systems using compressed-air or water drills allow further energy savings. The technologies are discussed and a broad strategy to selectively apply these them together is presented.

Static tests give a measure of the balance between acid-producing and acid-neutralising mineral components in a material, while kinetic tests determine acid generation and neutralisation over a long period. Drill-core samples from the amphibolite and gneiss host rocks of the Stratoni lead-zinc sulphide deposit in Greece and mine/mill waste samples from Stratoni and Olympias were examined by the standard acid base accounting, BCR and net acid production tests. Mineralogical data on the materials and resulting residues were used to illustrate the differences between the methods and establish their ranges of applicability. BCR seems to simulate most closely the conditions prevailing during generation of acid mine drainage but is time-consuming and requires elaborate equipment. This paper investigates the use of backfill zones and yielding pillars for subsidence control. The investigation begins by choosing an appropriate subsidence predictive technique to simulate the proposed subsidence-control schemes. Two case studies are performed in order to delineate the accuracy and utlility of the chosen predictive technique and then the results of these case studies are used to establish appropriate sets of regional site parameters. Next, a detailed analysis of the major variables affecting the outcome of the subsidence-control simulations is conducted and graphical displays of the exact sensitivity of the surface subsidence to these variables are given. Finally, alterations to the surface subsidence that are expected from using two major subsidence-control techniques are presented. The first technique to be assessed is a backfilled pillar centered longitudinally in a panel. With this arrangement, a minimal amount of backfill material can produce substantial decreases in vertical displacements. The second technique to be assessed is the use of yielding gate pillars to reduce the sinuosity of the transverse subsidence over adjacent panels. With proper design, this technique can greatly curtail surface strains and help minimize remedial drainage control.

The Bureau of Mines compared longitudinal strain energy output of a percussive drill to energy determined by measuring maximum piston velocity. Strain gages were used to determine the strain-time waveform and its amplitude at seven levels of operating pressure and eight levels of thrust. The longitudinal strain energy was found to be approximately 14 ft lb less than the maximum piston energy at comparable operating conditions.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to investigate methods for desilicating sodium aluminate solution derived from leaching a limestone-anorthosite sinter with 10-pct Na2C03 solution. Desilication tests were made at atmospheric pressure to determine the effects of time and additions of lime and desilication residues. A two-stage, countercurrent desilication procedure was developed to reduce the Si02 content sufficiently to meet specifications for cell-grade A1203. Both stages were conducted at boiling temperatures at atmospheric pressure. Reagent lime was charged as desilication seed to the partially desilicated solution in the second stage, and a product (desilication residue) precipitated by the lime addition was charged to the freshly leached solution in the first stage. Average A1203 loss in the desilication circuit was 5.8 pct, and the product solution contained less than 0.04 g/l Si02. Complete precipitation of A1203 by carbonation resulted in a hydrate containing less than 0.01 pct Si02. Calcination of this hydrate would produce A1203 meeting the 0.015 pct Si02 specification for cell-grade material.

Nuclear gauging is used world-wide in almost every industry. From mining and ore-grading to finished product, the metallurgical industry is one of the biggest users of nuclear sensors for inventory, process control, and quality assurance. This paper will discuss the basic theory of gamma transmission gauging techniques found useful in mining, milling and metal production. Techniques to be discussed are gamma transmission for level and density. A major new technique will also be discussed. This technique is called gamma backscatter. The uniqueness of this technology, how to apply and the differences between transmission and backscatter will be accentuated.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Knowledge-based condition monitoring of cone crushers). A large proportion of the electricity used by the quarrying industry is consumed in the comminution and sizing process. In most cases aggregate processing plants operate with minimum control features resulting in limited operational efficiency. Improved control is required to increase operational efficiency with concomitant savings associated with reduction in re-circulating load and improved resource utilisation. Development work has suggested that a combination of adaptive control and process condition monitoring could improve control of comminution plants. Many commercial process control and condition monitoring systems are available, but none were deemed suitable due to the domain specific characteristics of the application. An assessment of the particular characteristics of cone crushing concluded that the application was best suited to the use of small domain specific process control combined with bespoke condition monitoring. The processing power of the control system for the project is a function not of the academic requirement, but rather the economic and practical constraints imposed by the application. As a result of the constraints a high-end PC system has been designed in preference to a workstation. Within the research project work packages are sub-divided into novel wear sensor development, knowledge based control/condition monitoring and the investigation and mathematical modelling of the wear mechanisms inherent in cone crushing. Numerous strategies were considered to implement the control system outlined. The system currently under development is a modular design which utilises intelligent novel sensors to provide a variety of data inputs

A dynamic testing program was performed to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity of 610-mm (24-inch) diameter open ended steel pipe to evaluate set-up and provide minimum pile tip elevation based on the dynamic testing results. The program was performed for a marine terminal project consisting of a 570-meter (1900-foot) long, overwater railroad trestle. The project location is Santa Marta, Colombia, South America. The subsurface profile generally consisted of 4m (12 ft.) of water and soft to hard silty clays. The piles were installed to an approximate tip elevation of -22 meters (MSL). Three piles were initially dynamically monitored during installation and then later monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". Knowledge of change in pile capacity with time after end of initial driving is important for design of pile foundations.

This Bureau of Mines report describes floor heave ground control problems that have been encountered in a new underground coal mine in West Virginia. Previous experience in the coal seam, the results of physical property investigations, and in situ rock stress determinations are discussed. The apparent cause of the ground control problems is the existence of a high, biaxial, horizontal stress field coupled with a floor member that has time-dependent deformation characteristics, A theoretical analysis of the failure process is developed. The analysis is assisted by finite element techniques. Mine design recommendations based on this analysis are presented.
