"This study investigated calcination behavior of one of the Turkish laterite deposits, which was recently found in Sivrihisar region. Representative limonitic laterite samples (1.26% Ni) taken from Yunusemre Karasivritepe and Kucuksivritepe location were first subjected to drying. Removal of chemically bound water and other volatiles were then studied, in detail. In the calcination experiments, temperature and time were the main experimental variables. Thermal treatment was conducted at the specific temperatures in 250 °C - 800 °C range. The weight losses due to elimination of chemically bound water and other volatiles were reported to be approximately 10 per cent of the weight of the ore. For the particle size used in the current work, 700 °C and 40 minutes were determined to be the optimum calcination temperature and time, respectively.IntroductionThe nickel ores that are economically valuable can be grouped into two categories: sulphide type nickel ores and oxide type nickel ores, namely laterites. Over all reserves in the world, 40% are sulphide nickel ores and the remaining 60% are laterites [1]. Pyrometallurgical nickel extraction from sulphide type nickel ores is conducted via matte smelting. More recently, laterite ore bodies have been subjected to nickel extraction. Depending mainly on the chemical composition of the laterite and the process economics, various extraction techniques have been implemented: pyrometallurgical route involves ferronickel smelting. High pressure acid leaching (HPAL) is the commercial method for hydrometallurgical nickel extraction, while ammonia leaching (CARON Process) is a combination of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes [2]. With the improvements in these processes, it is predicted that laterite’s share in the world nickel production will rise to 50% in 2012, while it was reported to be 42% in 1,200,000 tons of annual production in 2003 [3]."

Mexicana de Cananea, S.A de C.V. is a major copper producer mining a large deposit of the disseminated porphyry type considered one of the largest copper resources of the world with 2.7 billion tons of 0.60% copper for the mill plus 4.1 billion tons of averaging 0.26% copper for leaching. Mining of low grade sulfide leach ore, has been an important part of the overall production of the open pit mine which started in 1944. Before this time all the mining in Cananea was by underground methods. The leaching process in Cananea began on the 1920's with in situ operations in the underground mine and small dumps up to the 1950's. Large scale leaching operations began in 1960 and the copper solutions produced were treated in precipitation plants until 1,980 when the first SX/EW Plant was put in operation in Cananea. Leaching action is essentially ferric-bacterial, with no fiesh acid added to the leaching solutions. Traditionally, 5540% copper extraction is recovered fiom ROM, 70- 120 meter high leach dumps in 80 months of leaching. Cananea has successfully improved copper recoveries by implementing several actions that include: 1. Stripping of old dumps. 2. Leaching of old dumps through slotted casing. 3. Crushing conveying leach ore to minus 8 inch and stacking it in 30 meter lifts. As result of these actions, copper recovery has been increased' to about 70% of total copper with actions 1 and 2 and up to 85% in half the time by crushing-conveying the leach ore, based on the same solubility index of the run-of-mine ore. This paper describes the above actions that were implemented to enhance the leaching recoveries from. sulfide leach dumps and the economics of such actions.

"The separation of nickel from the aluminum present in spent catalysts and different metallic industrial residues, is proposed in the following systems: alloy Al2Ni and the mixtures 50 wt% Ni + 50 wt% Al, 10 wt% Ni + 90 wt% Al2O3 and 12 wt% NiO + 88 wt% Al2O3. The experiments were carried out in a tubular reactor with a flow of 2 l/h of gaseous chlorine and from 200 ° to 800 °C. The final products of the reaction, extracted from the hottest zones of the reactor where characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, AA and XRF, as NiCl2 y NiCl2.6H2O while in the coldest regions AlCl3 was deposited in the first two cases and in the other there was a residue of ?, a- Al2O3, sometimes mixed with some remainder of Ni and NiO. The procedure attained different separation factors which showed the optimun conditions for the recovery of both metals. Introduction Some studies of nickel corrosion were carried out in chlorine gas at temperatures above 950ºC, and suggested that nickel is not corroded below 538ºC. [1] However, in a previous work it was shown that the chlorination allows the separation of nickel from aluminum and the formation of NiCl2 was detected from 200ºC in binary mixtures Ni-Al 50 wt%, for isothermal conditions in chlorine flux. [2] Other researchers obtained selective chlorination above 650ºC of a fly ash containing 1.4 wt% of Ni and other metals (V, Mg, Al and Fe). The Ni was separated from the Mg and NiCl2 started to vaporize at 550ºC and was after condensed in a zone of the reactor above 380ºC with 90% of purity. [3]"

"The easy accessibility and power of the PC, as well as the education of our engineering students in the use of these tools, are compelling reasons for developing computer aided instructional (CAI) tools. There are a wide range of areas in the engineering curriculum where students must learn the steps and the process of applying judgement in problem solving. In the typical course instruction, · an instructor introduces theory to students; the application of the theory to solving problems is often demonstrated in the abstract. Students therefore spend a significant amount of time learning how to apply the theory to problem solving. Additional time and effort must then be spent to get students to the point of learning concepts and integrating this knowledge. A number of computer aided packages have therefore been developed for use in several courses in the materials science and engineering curriculum that encompass both calculational and instructional capabilities. This paper presents an overview of some of these packages which include the solution of a non-linear equation, the instruction of binary diffusion couples, an introduction of crystallography, an introduction to heat transfer and the solution of thermodynamic stability diagrams. The context in which these CAI Tutorials were developed and are being used will be discussed. The pitfalls in the development of these packages will also be discussed. The use of the tutorials has important implications on the expectations from an engineering education of both instructor and student.IntroductionTraditionally, it is quite routine to teach engineering students how to use a computer (the PC today for undergraduates) as a tool in performing engineering calculations or in simulating a process or a unit operation. This often takes the form of one course in computer programming, whether it is Fortran, Visual basic or a spreadsheet, and another course in numerical computation. However, the materials and electronic revolution have brought about considerable advances in computer power and speed, and accessibility. Today, the manipulation of digital images, movies, and speech are commonplace on a desktop PC.' Many mathematical models that were executed only on workstations can now be readily handled on a PC. Concurrently, more of our students own a PC even if their curriculum does not require them to purchase one. Today, virtually every university student has been introduced to the PC in either their elementary or high school education. Hence, the increased capabilities and accessibility of the PC and the familiarity of students with this tool make it compelling to explore its use as an educational tool for our engineering students. This is not a traditional role of a computer in our engineering curriculum."

A crystalline polyferric sulfate (PFS) adsorbent was synthesized by oxidizing and precipitating ferrous ions under atmospheric conditions. The morphology, structure, composition and specific surface area (SSA) and adsorptive efficacy to As (III) of the adsorbent were characterized by SEM/EDS and TEM images, XRD patterns, FT-IR spectra, BET SSA analyses and adsorption experiments. The adsorbent presents as morphology of near-spherical aggregate and good crystallinity. A small amount of goethite co-precipitated with PFS in the case of the initial ferrous concentration of 1 mol/L and increased the SSA of the aggregates. The absorbent with co-precipitation of goethite showed good adsorption to As(III) and good filtering performance in the high As(III)-content solution of 10–100 mg/L under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions (pH 2.09–9.01), and its maximal adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency were 7911 μg/g and 96% separately. After Adsorption, the stability of the absorbents adsorbing As(III) were evaluated by TCLP tests, and the results indicated that the absorbents adsorbing As(III) were extremely stable, and the concentration of arsenic in all leaching solutions were less than 0.01 mg/L.

About 75% of the market economy countries's supply of cobalt is produced in Central Africa by Zafre and Zambia. Zafre alone accounts for more than 55% and has the resources and capacity to increase output significantly at any time so its dominant position is unlikely to be challenged in the foreseeable future. Other producers from domestic resources are Canada, Australia and South Africa; and Cuba, probably the most important producer outside of the Market Economy countries. Belgium, Norway, France, Japan and Finland produce cobalt from imported materials. While there are "cobalt ores", inMorocco, USA, Canada and the USSR, the mineralisation is complex and cobalt extraction is costly. In ZaPre and Zambia cobalt is a by-product of copper; in Canada, Australia, France, and Cuba it is a by-product of nickel; and in South Africa it is a by-product from the production of Platinum Group Metals. Thus the levels of cobalt production are inevitably related to the production of other primary metals. While some cobalt is produced by predominantly pyrometallurgical methods most of the world's cobalt is produced hydrometallurgically. The existence of large hydro-electric power plants and the mineralogy of the copper and cobalt concentrates encouraged research and development in Zafre of the recovery of copper and cobalt by electrowinning from sulfate solutions; much pioneering work was carried out, which lead to construction of the two largest copperlcobalt hydrometallurgical plants in the world, at Shituru and Luilu. Similar systems were adopted in Zambia. In Canada high pressure hydrometallurgical processes based on the sulfate system were developed and adopted in Australia, the Philippines, Finland and South Africa. Meanwhile developments in chloride hydrometallurgical extraction of nickel and cobalt lead to its use in the extraction of cobalt in Norway, France and Japan.

Manganese is one of the main impurities in the recovery of base metals from their ores. This is especially true when laterite ores are processed using the pressure acid leach (PAL) process. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three Western Australian nickel laterite plants to separate nickel and cobalt from manganese and other impurities makes these processes complicated and costly in capital and operation. The research work carried out by the solvent extraction (SX) group at the A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy (CSIRO Minerals) has led to the development of direct solvent extraction processes to separate nickel and cobalt from manganese and other impurities. The simplicity of the process flowsheets and the expected savings in capital and operating costs are the major advantages of the new direct solvent extraction processes over the existing processes. By using a new synergistic organic system, Versatic 10 / dccyl-4-pyridinccarboxylatc ester, with a pilot plant leach solution from BHP¬Billiton (after iron precipitation), the metal values (Ni and Co) together with zinc and copper were separated from manganese and other major impurities (Mg, Ca and Cl) in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted manganese, magnesium and calcium were easily scrubbed out. The extraction and stripping kinetics of the metals with the new synergistic organic system were very fast and the synergistic system was found to be chemically stable. pH-extraction isotherms of metals with D2EHPA showed that the extraction order as a function of pH50 was Zn2+ > Ca2+ > Mn2+ > Cu2+ > Co2+> Ni2+> Mg2+. Semi-continuous test work with a cobalt pilot plant leach solution from Peko Rehabilitation Project Pty Ltd and a synthetic solution to simulate a concentrated laterite leach solution from BHP-Billiton showed that manganese, together with calcium, copper and zinc can be separated from nickel, cobalt and magnesium. This led to the development of another direct solvent extraction process to separate manganese and other impurities from nickel and cobalt and to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions. A project was initiated by HiTec Energy Ltd to recover manganese from waste laterite leach solutions using SX technology and to further purify it to produce high purity electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) for the high quality alkaline battery industry. Batch tests were conducted to select a suitable organic system for the extraction of manganese in terms of selectivity and extraction and stripping kinetics. A total of eight organic systems were tested using waste laterite processing solutions. A Versatie 10 / synergist system showed very promising results. By using the synergistic system, high manganese recovery would be obtained, fewer SX stages would be required and a higher A:O ratio could be used in extraction, resulting in a smaller organic inventory and lower capital costs. "In this paper, the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry was conducted based on the data from typical electrolytic aluminum plants of a China’s northwest province. The results show that under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.16 times/(cell• day) and anode duration as 5 minutes per day, equivalent emissions of CO2 reached 1.23 ton per ton of aluminum, in which PFC emissions accounted for about 71%. Compared with foreign advanced level, which is 0.87 ton per ton of aluminum under the conditions of average anode effect coefficient as 0.01 times/(cell•day) and anode duration as 0.46 minutes per day, there is much room for China’s aluminum industry to reduce GHG emissions. Since anode effect plays an important role on PFCs generation in electrolytic aluminum process, how to control anode effect strictly becomes the key factor for remarkable reduction of GHG emissions in China’s aluminum industry.IntroductionTechnology of aluminum electrolysis is a mature and efficient process of aluminum production. Due to the huge demand on aluminum worldwide, so resource consumption, energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the process of aluminum production are still large. The global output of aluminum reached 45193 kt in 2012. A large amount of CO2 and PFCs are produced in the process of aluminum production, and the greenhouse effect and environmental pollution caused by emissions of them is a concern. PFCs belong to a powerful greenhouse gas, thus emission reduction of PFCs is very important for aluminum electrolysis industry. At present, China's aluminum production accounts for about 33% of the world's aluminum production, and controlling PFCs emission has become the key point of pollution control of aluminum electrolysis industry in China [1].Taking the case of a typical electrolytic aluminum plant of a China’s northwest province, this paper studies the list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum industry in China. GHG emissions of a China’s northwest province were calculated through investigating existing situation of aluminum electrolysis industry in the province, knowing capacity, output, main production technology and equipment level of aluminum electrolysis industry, and using the calculation framework and methods of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry, which were put forward by the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), the international aluminum association and other organizations at home and abroad. The list analysis of GHG emissions of aluminum electrolysis industry will offer useful information in promoting emission reduction of GHG in aluminum electrolysis industry, improve the efficiency of energy utilization."

"In sheet metal forming process, the forming limit and strain distribution are governed by plastic instability and fracture following strain localization. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation as well as friction is one of the crucial factors to induce the strain localization in high-speed metal forming processes. In this paper, a numerical simulation of the sheet metal extrusion process has been conducted by using thermal-mechanical coupling finite element method. An improved mixed finite element method has been used to solve the large deformation elasto-plastic problem. In thermal phase, the transient heat transfer finite element method together with the Crank-Nicholson algorithm has been employed to determine the temperature field. Both the numerical results and the experimental observations reveal that the temperature gradient plays an important role in inducing the strain localization, which eventually leads to fracture failure in the sheet metal extrusion process.IntroductionSheet metal extrusion is such a process where the extrusion punch penetrates into one surface of the sheet metal material to let it extrude and flow towards the outlet of the die. This process can be used to produce protruding parts on a strip material. In engineering applications, the quality of the product is affected by many factors such as stress state, loading speed, material properties and lubrication condition. The research on failure mechanisms and improvement of formability in sheet metal forming processes by exploitation of differential thermal conditions has been of great interest recently [1-3]. It has been proved that the temperature gradient caused by plastic deformation, heat transfer, and friction between sheet and tools is one of crucial factors to affect 'the formability in high speed sheet metal forming processes [4]. In our previous study of sheet metal extrusion, it has been observed that plastic deformation is highly localized and some specimens are subjected to fracture failure in the form of crack propagation [5]. To understand this failure phenomenon, the effects of temperature gradients must not be ignored."

The mineralogy and textures of cyclone dust, sludge, and occasional build-ups in the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) direct ironmaking pilot plant at Universal, Pennsylvania have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy, and phase compositions have been determined by SEM-EDS. The cyclone dust consists of particles of carbon, metallic iron, sulfur-bearing iron, and wustite. Measurements of particles in the sludge indicates that 69% are less than 2.5 um across, 21 % are 2.5-5 um, and 10% are larger than 5 um. Mineralogically the sludge particles are mainly carbon and metallic iron, with minor wustite and sulfur-bearing iron. Build-ups that sporadically develop in the furnace consist of olivine, hercynite spinel, metallic iron, wustite, pyrrhotite, pseudobrookite, akermanite-ferroakermanite and gehlenite. The microtextures shown by the build-ups indicate that much of that material has precipitated at the build-up loci. This study has been supported by AISI and the U.S. Department of Energy.

"In this paper, the reduction kinetics of low grade hematite ore was calculated. Mineralogy shows that the ROM (run of mine) ore is of low grade hematite ore type, assaying 27.2 wt% Fetotal and with main valuable minerals of hematite. The reduction kinetics shows that the reduction reaction rates of pellets with additive and without additive are all controlled by diffusion through the product layer. The calculated apparent activation energy of pellets with 12 wt% complex additive is 8.55 KJ/mol, dropping 62.23% compared to that of pellets without additive.IntroductionWith the rapid development of iron and steel industry in China, there has been a soaring demand for iron ores in the past decade. The imports of iron ores have increased from 148 million ton in 2003 to 620 million ton in 2010[1]. Therefore, large quantities of low grade iron resources are necessary to utilize in China at the moment. During the past years, extensive research has been carried out on the low grade hematite ores [2-6], such as reverse floatation, gravity separation, high-gradient magnetic separation and direct reduction-magnetic separation. Direct reduction-magnetic separation is an innovation way to treat the low grade hematite [7]. However, the research of reduction kinetics of low grade hematite is few. Some research about the reduction kinetics of reducing iron oxides by CO was studied [8]. The results indicated that the apparent activation energy is 8.0-28 KJ/mol when the reducing reaction is controlled by internal diffusion. The apparent activation energy is 50-75 KJ/mol when the reducing reaction is controlled by chemical reaction. In this paper, the reduction kinetics of pellets was also been studied."

The importance of the processing of secondary resources such as solid industrial wastes and liquid effuents as well as byroducts for the recovery of the associated metal values hardly needs any elaboration. Such processing contributes in no small measure.towards the augmentation of the availability and the supply position of resources. As an added benefit, it leads to a reduction in environmental pollution caused by the undesirable waste materials. As some typical examples of secondary resources in the Indian scenario, mention' can be made of spent catalysts, metal/alloy scrap, ash, consumed batteries, flue dust, slag, sludge and slime, pickling solutions, spent acids; plating rinse solutions, spent etchants, waste water from synthetic fibre manufacture and from tanneries etc. These wastes constitute a source of a variety of non ferrous metals. In the processing of secondary resources like these, the techniques of hydrometallurgy such as solvent extraction play a pivotal role. This paper outlines the efforts made to use solvent extraction to recover (1) base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt from a number of secondary resources like cake, and sludge(2) refractory metals like molybdenum and vanadium from sulphidic, byproducts and spent catalyst and (3:) nuclear metal like uranium from phosphoric acid. In the case of base metals, process flowsheet involving the use of acidic extractants such as DEHPA and PC88A have been optimised. The problem of iron removal from the leach liquor, "which influences the metal recovery process significantly, has drawn a special emphasis. hi the case of refractory metals, basic extractants .like Alamine 336 has been pressed into service to produce kilogramme. quantities of pure salts of molybdenum and vanadium, Finally, the paper gives a brief account of plant experience in recovering uranium from phosphoric acid, using 'a solvent system comosed of DEHPA and TOPO.

"EMEC Consultants is developing a process to extract oxygen, aluminum and silicon from lunar anorthositic soil. The process will provide oxygen in space for propulsion, aluminum as a structural material, and possibly silicon for the construction of solar cells.The evolution of the process concept in the course of our present NASA-sponsored SBIR effort is discussed. A molten salt electrolysis producing aluminum and oxygen is the central step; inert anode technology is to be employed. Silicon will be produced by reducing the anorthite, CaAI2Si20S' with aluminum. In a steady-state operation, all components of the ore added have to be removed from the process, and the removal of calcium is a major topic of our experimental studies.Utilization of Lunar ResourcesUtilization of lunar resources may play an essential role in the exploration of the solar system and the conquest of space. High costs are involved in overcoming Earth's gravity to supply missions in space. Even at a low projected cost of $ 300 for transporting a pound of payload into Earth orbit -- today's costs are many times higher -- it appears attractive to use resources in space to produce needed materials. Processing of lunar resources on the lunar surface is an obvious possibility.Oxygen is a product of major interest. It is required for support of human life in space. Even greater quantities may be needed for propulsion, to conduct further missions into space. To satisfy this demand for oxygen through lunar processing requires a quite different solution than to supply oxygen on Earth, where oxygen gas is abundant and easy to extract from air or water. On the lunar surface, solid oxide materials have to be used. Hydrogen reduction of ilmenite and subsequent electrolysis of the resulting water is being studied [1]. Other suggestions include fluorination of lunar soil [2], reduction with lithium and electrolytic decomposition of the resulting lithium oxide [3], and aqueous HF leaching [4]."

In the paper, the recovery technology of gallium from zinc-leaching residue by cold-bonded coal-based direct reduction process following magnetic separation was developed. The results show that the scattered metal Ga can be concentrated obviously after the reduction of zinc-leaching residue briquette and magnetic separation of reduced product. At the same time, the volatilization of Zn in the residue is enhanced during the reduction. When the residue, bear¬ing 18.60% Zu.21.18% Fe and 527 g/t Ga, was reduced with coal at 1100°C for 150 min, the results of Zn volatilization of 9842% and Ga recovery of 89. 10% were obtained in reduction. After magnetic separation of the reduced product, the concentration of Ga in sponge iron is 2164 g/t, and the separation recovery of Ga reaches 92.42%. The enriched mechanism of Ga during reduction -separation process was studied by using electron microscope, scanning elec¬tron microscope, energy spectrum and mineralogical analysis. The investigations show that there is no formation of independent phase of Ga during reduction process. The Ga occurs mainly in metallic iron phase (the concentration of Ga in metallic iron phase is 0.04%-0,4%), in addition, there exists a little Ga in poorly crystalline sulphide (o.08%-0./5Y& Ow). But Go does not exist in most of glass and silicate phase. The affinity of Ga for metallic iron is the enrichment basis of Go in reduction, and it is also in favor of recovering Go during magnetic separation. Hydriding properties and crystal structure of a Ti-V- Mn solid solution alloy have been studied by P-C isotherm measurements and neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. The absorption P-C isotherm at 298K shows two plateau regions at 0.01MPa and 1MPa. The X-ray diffraction data have demonstrated that three phases with a BCC, a pseudo-cubic FCC and an FCC structure form subsequently with increase of the hydrogen content. Crystal structure of the latter two phases has been determined by Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction data. The FCC phase is the di-hydride of CaF2 type with hydrogen occupation in the T sites. The pseudo-cubic FCC phase is the mono-hydride of NaCl-type with hydrogen occupation in the 0 sites, which has not been reported so far. The lattice constants of the mono-hydride (Ti1.0V1.1Mn0.9)H_2.7 are a'=0.407 nm for two axes and c'=0.390 nm for the third axis. The a'axis is shorter by 4% than the c'axis. This pseudo-cubic FCC lattice is formed by contraction of 5% of the a axis and expansion of about 30% of the c axis from the original BCC lattice.

This work aims to incorporate the Bof White Clay, from Boa Vista, Paraiba State, Brazil, as natural nanofiller in Ehylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) and obtain flexible films. Nanocomposite was obtained using a twin-screw extruder, and film formed using a blow extruder machine. The flexible film nanocomposite was characterized, by tensile tests, XRD, DSC and their properties were evaluated. The results showed a good interaction between the clay and the EVOH resulting in an increase of properties of films nanocomposites as compared to films neat polymer.

The process metallurgy of many nickel laterite smelting operations is controlled largely by the physical chemistry of the slag system. Consequently, accurate phase diagram information and physicochemical property data are essential to interpret and predict the behaviour and optimisation of the overall process. The system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO) first described by Bowen et al. between 1914 and 1935 and the system (SiO2 - MgO - FeO - Fe2O3) determined by Muan and Osborne in 1956 are of particular relevance to the study of nickel laterite smelting slags as these systems form a reasonable approximation of many industrial slags. This paper will review the literature for these (and other relevant) phase systems. In addition data available from the ternary and (quasi)ternary phase diagrams will be compared with data obtained from industrial slags. The physico-chemical properties under consideration will include; melting and crystallisation behaviour (solidus and liquidus temperatures), viscosity - temperature relationships, heat flux considerations, electrical conductivity, surface and interfacial tension.

Valorization of slag from metallurgical industrial processes becomes ever more important as this may help optimizing and reducing the use of natural resources such as rock and sand. In view of this objective, metallurgical processes have to be analyzed in order to modify the slag composition so that it will meet the expected requirements of potential users of these resources. This paper gives the results of a thermodynamic analysis of the flash smelting process to understand the impact of operational parameters on slag chemistry and elemental partitioning in the process. It is shown that an increase of the matte grade and temperature leads to higher deportment of Pb, Zn and As to the slag. With increasing matte grade the volatilization of these elements decreases. Furthermore, the results indicate an increasing solubility of Cu and S in slag at higher temperatures.

"Um-Gheig Pb-Zn representative sample was collected from the main adite of Um-Gheig mine along Red Sea coast in Egypt. Its chemical analysis shows that, it contains 16% Zn, 2.3% Pb, 0.1% Cd and 0.1% B as elements of interest. After H2SO4 agitation leaching, the chemical composition of Um- Gheig Pb-Zn deposit ore residue assayed 2.26% Pb, 1.5% Zn, 0.085 % B and 0.01% Cd. This residue was leached with 20% HCl at S/L ratio 1/3 for 2 hours at 80o C. The chloride leach liquor was found to contain 18 g/l Pb, 13 g/l Zn, 0.1 g/l Cd and 0.75 g/l B with the corresponding leaching efficiencies 79%, 86%, 100% and 88% respectively. Lead was precipitated from the chloride leach liquor using concentrated H2SO4 to obtain PbSO4 with precipitation efficiency 96%. While boron was extracted by the selective resin Amberlite IRA743 with loading efficiency of 80%. On the other hand, Zn and Cd were precipitated using Na2S solution with 86.7% and 100% recovery efficiencies respectively.IntroductionLead-zinc ores occur in Egypt in a few localities distributed along the Red Sea coast between El Qusier and Ras Banas.. The reserve of the ore deposits has been estimated by Soviet and German Experts to be about 900,000 Ton, [1]. Onal et al., [2] recovered Pb from Pb–Zn sample containing 10.17 % Pb and 10.98 % Zn from Aladag in Turkey. El-Sherif, [3] used concentrated HCl to leach lead-zinc ore sample of Um-Sammuki area in Egypt. As had been published by Marchioretto et al. [4], the precipitation of heavy metals with lime, sulfide and caustic soda are the most commonly used economical methods for metal removal. Lead was completely removed from the anaerobically digested sludge by precipitation with NaOH and Na2S at waste water treatment plants. Mahdy et al., [5] had successfully extracted boron from the bittern solution of Qaron Lake by ion exchange resin (Amberlite IRA 743). The extraction of boron was mainly depending upon the pH value. They extracted 80% of boron at pH 5.5, while at pH 3.9 about 74% boron was extracted. Kabay et al. [6] used the column-mode to remove 1g/l of boron from geothermal waste water of the Kizildere-Geothermal Power Station by using Diaion CRB 02 Nglucamine- type chelating resins. In this regard, the removal of lead, cadmium and boron allow the residue to be reclassified as non hazardous material."
