The main potash deposit at Taquari-Vassouras is contained in cycle VII, and consists of several sylvinite bodies. Cycle VII belongs to a sequence of nine cycles defined by Szatmari (1974) in the Sergipe-Alagoas basin. The sylvinite layers are separated by halite beds. They are seated on or may be laterally in discordant contact with other lithologies such as the tachyhydrites at the base, and the limestone breccia at the top. The main structural features in the deposit include numerous synclines and anticlines, salt dissolution phenomena, and open fractures associated with the axes of the anticlines.

The worldwide talc industry has experienced significant changes since the 1980's. Consolidation of companies and operations in Europe, Australia, and North America has altered the face of supply and distribution. Imports of Chinese and Australian crude have increased competition and product options. The number of processing operations without local mines has moved competition closer to the market area. Quality controls related to ISO certification and tighter specifications demanded by the customers have altered the way our mines and mills operate. Ceramics, coatings, and paper applications continue to consume the majority of processed talc.

Although explosives constitute only a small portion of a mine's total cost, the relative success of each blast has a tremendous effect on subsequent activities such as excavation, crushing, and equipment maintenance. Beginning in January of 1993, tests were carried out to determine whether productivity could be improved by replacing standard ammonium nitrate fuel oil mixtures (ANFO) with a high density, high performance blasting agent. The study was carried out at gold mines, coal mines, and cement quarries in Nevada, California, Colorado, and New Mexico. A wide variety of rock types and blasting conditions were encountered. Results showed that at most operations productivity was sufficiently improved to more than offset the increase in explosives cost. This resulted in a net reduction in mining cost. This paper presents a summary of these results.

The microtunneling project for the State of Hawaii's Natural Energy Laboratory (NELH) facility in Kona, Hawaii, was awarded to Nova Group Inc., Napa, California. Nova has developed both microtunnel and deep pile cofferdam experience. Both of which would be required for this project. The project was designed by Makai Ocean Engineering of Honolulu as a continuation of the Ocean Thermal Energy Project (OTEC). The world's first OTEC plant has been successfully operational at NELH since 1982 netting approx 50 kw of usable electric power from a gross generation of 210 kw. A second plant designed to draw 39°F cold water from 3,000 ft below sea level and produce a gross output of 1 mw with a net 500 kw of usable power required 2 - 54 in. finished diameter pipelines. An ongoing problem with earlier offshore pipelines has been the damage to the near-shore pipes within the surf zone. The necessity for a deeper connection between the land based pipe and submerged sea pipeline was obvious. Earlier pipelines had been drilled and shot through the shoreline. This process was only practical at shallow depths. Makai Ocean Engineering and the NELH scientists looked at different methods to get the pipeline through the shoreline at a depth of 80 ft below sea level. Initially, the direction drilling method was proposed as the most potentially practical method. A contract was awarded and various attempts were made to complete a successful

Autogenous grinding, defined as grinding with like material, while quite an old art has recently been revitalized. Two phases of autogenous grinding, primary and secondary, have been the subject of recent papers, technical articles and discussions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a third phase of autogenous grinding - Intermediate Autogenous Grinding - comparing it to and indicating advantages over the other two phases. Autogenous grinding can also be called ?Rock grinding?1; that is, grinding using ore or rock from the same deposit as the mill feed as grinding media contrasted with using as grinding media steel rods, steel or ironballs, natural or manufactured iron, free pebbles, or other shapes and materials foreign to the mill feed.

"The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Heap leach operations provide a low-cost method for recovering gold, silver, and copper metals from low grade ore materials. The processed ore materials are stacked in controlled lifts on a lined pad facility for heap leaching. A controlled barren solution is applied to the heap ore surface by sprinkler or drip emitter irrigation, and ore metals are leached into the solution for collection and extraction in plant process facilities. The leach pad and solution collection facilities are lined with impervious materials for containment of all process solutions. The liner system typically includes a composite geomembrane and clayey soil liner with a protective drain cover fill to maximize solution recovery and protect the underlying groundwater conditions. This paper discusses the types of pad liner systems currently used by the mining industry and the "good, bad, and ugly" lessons learned in engineering practice over the last 10 years in the design and construction of heap leach pads.

Imported products and materials have been in the news over the last several years in a wide variety of industries. Certainly the mining and industrial minerals industry has not been exempt from this. Cement imports have received considerable attention in the press and a number of written articles. We are also seeing imported aggregates particularly along the gulf coast and east coast of the United states. We are now hearing increasing talk of bringing high brightness calcium carbonate from offshore sources into the U.s. domestic markets. This paper takes a look at the location of these sources, factors affecting their acceptance by U.S. industry and presents a general cost comparison of offshore and domestic calcium carbonate. In addition, the market response of U.S. suppliers and the impact of imports is also discussed.

With the advent of the Clean Air Act and the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (scrubbers) on coal fired power plants, the management of solid wastes has taken on added importance. Aside from the large amounts of fly ash and bottom ash usually generated, large quantities of liquids in the form of scrubber sludge are also produced. These wastes must be disposed of within the constraints of land and water quality regulations. This paper describes the practices adopted by the electric utility industry in denting with this problem, including methods of generation and treatment, quantities and characteristics of the materials, and transportation and disposal practices. The paper also briefly describes final product characteristics and several applications for commercial utilization and land reclamation.

"In March 2013, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County began final design of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel project. The new, approximately 7-mile, 18-ft internal diameter tunnel will provide additional capacity and redundancy for the existing 8- and 12-foot diameter tunnels, which were built in 1937 and 1958, respectively. Connections to an existing, active 14-foot arch force main and four existing ocean outfalls ranging from 5- to 10-foot diameter are required. This paper will present geological features for the project, and details of the proposed post-tensioned tunnel liner and associated structures. INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are 23 independent special districts serving approximately 5.3 million residents in Los Angeles County. Seventeen of the districts that furnish sewerage services to the metropolitan Los Angeles area are signatory to a Joint Outfall Agreement that provides for a regional, interconnected system of facilities known as the Joint Outfall System (JOS). The JOS service area is shown in Figure 1. The JOS serves an area that encompasses 73 cities as well as unincorporated territory and parts of the City of Los Angeles. The JOS provides wastewater collection, treatment, reuse, and disposal for residential, commercial, and industrial users, and it includes seven treatment plants, the largest of which is the JWPCP, located in the City of Carson. Currently, secondary treated effluent is conveyed through two 6-mile long parallel tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter, from the JWPCP to a manifold structure located at Royal Palms Beach, near White Point on the Palos Verdes (PV) Peninsula, from which four seafloor outfalls extend offshore. The two main outfalls, 90- and 120-inches in diameter, extend approximately 1.5 miles offshore and discharge at a depth of approximately 200 feet below sea level. The other two outfalls, 60- and 72-inches in diameter, are used for additional capacity during heavy rain events and extend a shorter distance offshore and discharge at shallower depths. A schematic of the existing system with the proposed tunnel and structures is shown in Figure 2, and the proposed 18-ft diameter tunnel alignment is shown in Figure 3. Both existing tunnels and main outfalls are required to be in service at all times."

INTRODUCTION Man is exposed to many agents which induce mutations in germ cells and/or cancer at work, at play, and at home. In this total mix of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents, how important are radon and its daughters? Before man moved into caves and other permanent dwellings, the principal mutagenic and carcinogenic agent to which he was exposed was natural background radiation--cosmic rays, radium and potassium-40 in his food, plus gamma rays and radon from the soil and rocks. When man moved into caves, captured fire, and began to preserve and store foods, his exposure to carcinogens and mutagens took a quantum leap. Carcinogens and mutagens appear to act in the same way, that is, by altering the DNA or nuclear proteins of cells. Most mutagens are carcinogens, and vice versa, so when I say mutagens from here on, I will be referring to both. The relationship of the two is emphasized by the fact that administration of a carcinogen to a group of animals not only increases cancer rates among the exposed animals, but also among their progeny (Tomatis 1979). Environmental Mutagens Smoke from man's fires, overheated foods, and foods preserved by smoking, resulted in ingestion and inhalation of many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons--many of which are mutagens. Caves and houses with tight windows and doors tend to collect the radon which is constantly emanating out of soil, rocks and concrete, so man's exposure to the radon daughter component of background radiation increased several fold. Preserving food by salting or pickling with material that contained nitrites and nitrates led to increased ingestion of nitrosamines, which are potent mutagens. When his grains and other foods were stored in slightly damp rooms, fungi or mold would grow on them. Several of these fungi are now known to produce very potent mutagens. The best known of these is aflatoxin B (Ramachandra 1979). It may seem strange that a living organism would produce a mutagen. One might think that it would scramble its own genetic heritage. The reason it does not is that it produces the mutagen in an inactive form. It can be activated only by an animal's enzyme systems after being eaten. When man moved into cities, the collective smoke from wood and coal fires further increased his exposure. That particular smoke has now mostly disappeared, but has been replaced by smoke from automobiles and industry. When man moved into the age of technology, his exposure to mutagens again increased dramatically. Many mutagenic chemicals, from benzene and beta naphthylamine to a long array of pesticides and tobacco products have been added to our environment. Excess deaths from cancer are now being observed among chemists in most industrialized nations. Mutagens are even found in much of our wine, beer, and whiskey (Keller 1980). Some of the chemical mutagens were widely used in food or in other commercial products before their potential was discovered. Striking examples of this is the original butter coloring agent and the polychlorinated biphenyls that have been widely used in brake fluids and electrical transformers. Large quantities of them have been discarded or disposed of in a careless manner--in such a way that many of them have contaminated our food, our ground water and air (Landrigan 1981). In this nation, with the help of several recent laws, we were just beginning to get control of the industrial chemical mutagens. With the relaxing of these laws that is currently going on, it appears that it will be many more years before we really bring chemical mutagens under control. Many nations have yet to come to grips with this problem. On top of this massive array of chemical mutagens we have now added radiation from many artificial sources. For most of us this means medical X-ray and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Ionizing radiation is one of the most potent mutagens, so it has caught the public eye, and its contribution cannot be ignored. Fortunately, by the time we started using radioactive materials in quantity with the Manhattan Project, we had experience with radium and X-ray (some of it bad); we knew enough radiobiology and enough about methods of radiation protection so that most nuclear laboratories have had a phenomenal record of radiation safety. Radiation is one new technology with great potential for harm that has not exhibited that potential except for a few isolated situations like that of radium dial painters, uranium miners and atomic bomb victims. Uranium miners slipped into this list almost by accident. We could have protected our uranium miners just as well as we did the workers in nuclear laboratories; but we failed to do so. Why didn't we? The reason is simple. The Atomic Energy Commission was charged with protecting the health of their workers. They did not wait for a pile of bodies before they introduced controls. Congress appropriated the money, and taxpayers were willing to pay for the protection against radiation. Miners unfortunately did not work for the Atomic Energy Commission. Although mine operators were ignorant about radiation, the key item was that in the 1950s nobody was willing to pay the extra costs of adequate ventilation to control the high levels of radon and radon daughters in uranium mines. Control was not achieved until new laws and regulations were passed which made it compulsory. BIRTH DEFECTS AND CANCER

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

Bituminous coal dust was repeatedly placed into one lung lobe of anesthetized Macaca nemestrina monkeys using a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope. Radiographs taken at 15 day intervals showed a focal radiographic density after 90 days time when a total of 1 gram of dust had been instilled. The radiographic density progressed slightly in size until 12 months by which time 3 grams of dust had been instilled and the animals were euthanized. At necropsy, the only significant gross lesion detected was the focal black pulmonary lesion located at the dust instillation site. Histologically, the lesion was composed of coal dust laden macrophages located primarily within interstitial tissue and interspersed with a slight amount of reticulum and connective tissue fibers. The distribution of coal dust was limited to the instillation site in the right caudal lung lobe based on radiographic, gross and histologic examination. Bronchoalveolar lavage of both right and left caudal lung lobes was performed 8 times during the 12 month long experiments without significant complications. More macrophages were found in lavage fluid from the right lung than the left, and most macrophages from right lung contained coal dust particles. Based upon a limited physical examination and complete blood count at 15 day intervals the animals remained normal during the experiment. We conclude that the primate lung's response to focal experimental bituminous coal dust resulted in a marked focal increase in pulmonary alveolar macrophages, which can be recovered regularly in high numbers by bronchoalveolar lavage. The model described has significant potential for investigating the pathogenesis of various respirable dust-induced pneumoconioses, for evaluation of new therapeutic approaches, and for refining experimental and clinical diagnostic applications of bronchoalveolar lavage. The geostatistical estimation of the reserves of an ore deposit is highly dependent on the quality and stability of the variograms of the sample grades. Gold deposits commonly show a skewed grade distribution. The few high grades at the tail end of the distribution produce unstable variograms that are difficult to model. If these grades are cut to a lower grade value or removed, more stable variograms are obtained. However, outlier grades may make a deposit economically viable, and their cutting or removal should be treated with caution. To reduce (but not to eliminate) the effect of high grades, a transformation of the raw data can be performed. Most commonly used transformations are: logarithm, gaussian anamorphosis, rank and indicator. Variograms of the transformed grades are resistant to high grades and present a clear structure. The weak point of data transformation appears when grades are estimated by kriging; the estimates are very sensitive to slight variations in the parameters of the back-transformation. More robust variogram estimation procedures can also be used, but often these procedures are not suitable for skewed grade distributions as they are based on an assumption of a contaminated normal distribution. The Porgera gold deposit in Papua New Guinea has a highly skewed grade distribution, with grades ranging from 0.01 to 3500 g/t and a coefficient of variation greater than 5. For the geostatistical estimation of the high grade zone of the deposit, the influence of the high grades was quantified by calculating and comparing the following variograms: raw grades, raw grades with the highest grades removed and transformed grades. The study confirmed that there is no general method for handling high grades in a geostatistical reserve study. Several methods should be tried to quantify the influence of high grades.

Good afternoon, fellow members of the international mining community. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this special three-day, international gathering, and to join with you in honoring one of my very good friends, Doug Fuerstenau. It couldn't be more fitting to have this kind of event to mark Doug's 60th birthday. You know, in addition to his faculty position at the University of California in Berkeley, Doug is a member of the Board of Directors of our Homestake Mining Company. So it is a double pleasure for me to help pay tribute to one of the outstanding academicians of the mining industry as well as a man with whom I work closely in running Homestake. I have been asked to talk about "The Future of Precious Metals," but I will concentrate my remarks on gold. Since the theme of this Symposium is "Challenges in Mineral Processing," what I'm going to talk about is a challenge that relates especially to a major problem faced by those of us who process ores to recover gold. I noted that in the Scope of this Symposium, it stated: "the mineral industry is currently facing many challenges to improve the economics, operating efficiencies and environmental concerns of the mineral processing system." I couldn't agree more with that statement. I think that a need exists for us to address this situation as it involves gold. And who better to consider this than the worldwide leaders of mineral processing research here assembled. I start with the premise that we need a new method for cyanide use or a chemical to replace sodium cyanide entirely. The storage of energy in one form or another is a well established practice, demonstrated by the familiar sight of large oil storage steel tanks. Today, however, the problems of energy storage are taking on a new complexion. Increased emphasis on large and sometimes untried forms of energy storage is being generated by: (1) The uncertainties we face concerning future oil and gas supplies. (2) The growing need for the storage of peak-shaving energy on large utility systems. (3) The growing volume of highly toxic and energy generating wastes resulting from nuclear power plants. Concurrent with the growth of these pressures, legitimate environmental concerns now demand that the methods of storage which are utilized meet adequate criteria of safety and preservation of surface land, as well as fulfilling technical and economic functions. From these elements, increasing awareness has grown of the potential role that can be played by underground space in providing a storage medium for energy related materials. The vessels which must be built for underground energy storage will be built by the tunnel engineer, and the design requirements of such vessels will go far beyond the classical tunneling requirement to drive a stable, reasonably dry tunnel between two points. Depending on the nature of the material to be stored, the manner in which the storage is to be operated, and the specific risks to the environment which are involved, rock chambers must be designed as special purpose storage vessels. The tunnel engineer may be required to demonstrate that unusual pressure and temperature conditions can be sustained by the rock, or that containment of a toxic material can be assured. Since its passage, the Mining Law of 1872 has been modified several times to meet the changing needs of America's society and economy. Despite the fact that it continues to provide an effective framework for a robust US exploration and mining industry, the mining law continues to be criticized in some quarters as outdated. Pressure to reform the Mining Law of 1872 has reached new levels in recent years. Many proposals for reform of the law have been introduced during the 1990s. None, though, have been enacted. The issue will not likely disappear and is certain to be raised during the 105th Congress. To provide a better understanding of the status of current congressional reform proposals, this article presents an overview of the major moments in the history of mining laws in the western United States - from the days before the 1872 mining law and the days following its promulgation, to the current dilemma over mining law reform. The future of the mining law is assessed as are the interests at stake for the modern mining industry. Mining before 1872 No discussion of the Mining Law of 1872 is complete without some historical background to provide an understanding of the origins of this unique law. There was plenty of mining activity on the public lands before the mining law was enacted. At first, the federal government's policy was to allow all miners to work freely on the public lands and to resolve disputes among themselves. In this "hands off" environment, miners operated according to laws they promulgated. These were based on previous experiences in Europe and Mexico. These "frontier codes" of groups of individual miners took the form
