The growth of networks of shear fractures is explored in a series of experiments with samples of wet clay. The samples are subjected to plane strain deformation in a rigid apparatus. The individual fractures observed on the upper surface of the clay samples grow longer by three mechanisms: in-plane propagation, off-plane propagation and coalescence. New, active fractures cut and displace older, less active ones. The lengths of individual fractures display lognormal distribution in most cases and power distribution in fewer. The calculated length parameters in the experiments, as well as in three field cases discussed here, suggest that the fundamental parameters in fracture analysis are the normalized cumulative length and the length of the shortest fracture measured.

Pioneering work with pilot scale autogenous grinding started in Boliden 1956. From 1961 to 1991 eleven fully autogenous grinding (AG) circuits have been installed at various concentrators within the Boliden company. A compact two-stage grinding system was de- signed in the beginning of 1970s. The system included a pebble extractor which feed the secondary grinding stage with grinding media. The APC grinding system (Autogenous/Pebble/Crusher) is a further development of the AG concept. A new design of the Boliden pebble extractor together with improved control strategy make the performance of the APC system suitable to almost any ore quality. The Boliden AG concept is probably the most cost efficient grinding system of today.

The fundamentals of flotation are reviewed with an objective to understand the limitations in predicting the performance of a sulfide mineral flotation system and in its scale-up from laboratory studies to plant practice. The difficulties can often be traced back to complex interactions between chemical and physical parameters and nonequilibrium effects. The physical and chemical changes that occur during the long sojourn of sulfide minerals that begins with mining, continues through crushing and grinding, and ends when they emerge from the flotation cell as a concentrate, are reviewed. The benefits of new techniques that have become available in recent years to identify and estimate the amount of surface species are discussed.

Olivine was first described and named by Warner in 1790. It is an olive green to greenish gray colored magnesium-iron silicate containing a mixture, in solid solution, of fosterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4). Ratios between fosterite and fayalite in olivine are somewhat variable, but in general olivine contains at least 85% fosterite. Specific gravity is variable also, depending on the ratios of fosterite to fayalite. As a rule it is in the 3.2 - 3.4 range. All commercial olivine is obtained from the rock dunite, the most basic member of the peridotite group. Dunites, in addition to being composed primarily of olivine, generally contain assessory pyroxenes and spinels (chromite and magnetite). Dunites', when altered by hydrothermal solutions or metamorphism, often contain alteration minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite, vermiculite and amphiboles. In the 1930's and 40's considerable research was conducted on olivine for use as a refractory, plant food raw material, magnesium source for metal, and a source for magnesium chemicals. This research met with only limited success.

The plant Is then built to the detailed criteria and performance acceptance tested by the owner to see if the as-built mill meets the criteria, This performance testing is critical to the owner; the test must be systematic with sample collection coordinated throughout the plant. Despite the availability of systematic approaches to plant development, the new plants often fall short of design criteria. Surface mine equipment operators in the Campbell County region of Wyoming's Powder River Basin have found new ways of solving old problems. Technology, experience, competitive pressures and an increasing grasp of economies of scale have driven mine operators, equipment manufacturers and suppliers to specialization of applications. In economic terms, today's coal price of $4.95/t ($4.50/st) equates to $2.53/t ($2.30/st) in 1980 terms - an incomprehensible value at that time. This article describes some examples of change and adaptation made by Powder River Basin coal operators in overburden stripping equipment and techniques. It focuses on the evolution of the design and use draglines, shovels, trucks, scrapers and dozers.

A mineral rights holding can ultimately only be turned to account by the profitable mining of ore on that property. The evaluation of South African gold mineral rights properties must therefore be carried out by assuming that they have potential to form part or all of a future gold mine. Such analysis involves the simulation of many of the estimation procedures that are normally carried out in a full feasibility study of a new mining venture but using far less data. This paper describes in detail the evaluation procedures that may be applied to an individual property and then indicates how these techniques can be applied to a whole mineral rights portfolio.

The Grants uranium region of northwest New Mexico is the largest uranium district in the United States (approximately 50% of U.S. production plus reserves) and one of the largest In the world, with approximately 900 million pounds U308 production plus reserves. Deposits of the region are unusual among sandstone deposits for their high content of epigenetic carbonaceous material, generally interpreted but not proved to be of humic origin--that is, co-extensive with uranium in the primary deposits. Virtually all production in the region has been from the Jackpile Sandstone and Westwater Canyon Member of the Jurassic Morrison Formation. The tabular uranium deposits contain, in addition to humate and uranium, significant authigenic phyllosilicates, quartz overgrowths, humate-replaced detrital silicates, and a trace-metal assemblage typical of other sandstone uranium deposit types. Surrounding the deposits in the two sandstone units of the Morrison Formation is an alteration zone within which iron leaching has altered detrital ilmenite-magnetite to residual masses of titanium oxides. Feldspar alteration is locally present within this zone, below deposits in the Jackpile Sandstone, and above those in the Westwater Canyon Member. The feldspar alteration increases in inten¬sity toward the Brushy Basin Member which separates the two sandstone units, ranging from partial replacement to replacement and dissolution of plagioclase and sanidine. Spatial relations among the epigenetic humate, authigenic silicates, and the broad alteration zones that extend from the Brushy Basin Member to and including the uranium deposits suggest that (a) the organic material was involved in the unusual silicate alteration, transport, and authigenesis, and (b) that the humates originated in shales of the Brushy Basin Member. Stratigraphic relations among the Brushy Basin Member and the overlying Jackpile Sandstone and underlying Westwater Canyon Member suggest [in turn] that there was continuous, interfingering deposition controlled in part by contemporaneous basement subsidence along northwest- and northeast-trending zones. Following minor erosion of upper Jackpile Sandstone and deposition of basal organic-rich Cretaceous sediments, the silicates of the Jackpile Sandstone were once again altered by organic-bearing fluids, this time permeating down from Cretaceous sediments and partly obliterated ore-stage alteration.

This paper briefly reviews the historical development of the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace Process, which was first applied commercially to the treatment of qarnieritic ores in New Caledonia in the mid-fifties. It describes various technological improvements introduced, since, in industrial plants or developed in pilot facilities where a wide variety of nickel oxide ores has been treated success- fully over the years. Major categories of ores are characterized. The effect of their physical and chemical properties on their performance in the electric furnace is discussed. The relationships between ore composition, ferronickel grade and slag composition are analyzed and their effect on slag and metal tapping temperatures, nickel recovery, and electrode voltage are discussed.

Mathematical and expert system models are being used extensively for mineral process engineering. There exist no standardized methodologies for their computer implementation. In meeting this need, this paper introduces the concept of a process software model, or simply a software model and presents a two-step methodology for its development involving software model specification and development. The software model specification is to be performed after extensive discussions with the ultimate users of process software based on which the software model is developed. These software models provide a formal basis for the design and construction of software objects corresponding to the real world process objects.

Innovative hard rock narrow-vein, longwall, and stope leach mining systems concepts are described and evaluated economically. The principal tool proposed for use in these systems for both mine development and production is the U.S. Bureau of Mines radial-axial splitter. The mining systems concepts are prefeasibility level costed and projected to be cost competitive for steeply dipping veins, 0.6-1.2 m wide, for horizontal tabular ores 2 m -5 m thick, and for leachable ores with greater than a 1.7:1 stripping ratio. In all of the systems the orebody, less swell, is retained underground for use as backfill.

In the solvent extraction -electrowinning recovery of copper from oxide or sulfide ores there is a continuous transfer of iron and other impurities from the primary leach solution to the copper electrowinning electrolyte via chemical transfer or mechanical entrainment. Iron is the principal impurity that has to be controlled in the electrolyte by a "bleeding" of the electrowinning solution. This bleeding transfers copper and sulfuric acid back to the primary leach circuit along with the iron. Copper is recovered via the solvent extraction process and generally the sulfuric acid is used as a reagent in leaching. Unfortunately, cobalt, which is added to the electrowinning solution to modify the anodic process, is irreversibly lost through the bleeding operation. This cobalt loss represents a significant operating cost to SX-EW copper producers. DiphonixTM ion exchange resin contains diphosphonic acid and sulfonic acid functional groups on a polystyrene-divinyl benzene matrix. This resin has been found to strongly and selectively extract ferric ion from copper sulfate -sulfuric acid solutions containing cobalt. Thus, an ion exchange process using DiphonixTM resin for the control of iron has been developed to replace the conventional bleed stream process. The new process minimizes the loss of cobalt from the electrowinning circuit and strips the iron into a sulfate based solution suitable for leach solution makeup. In addition, this process can effect a lowering of the total iron concentration in the electrolyte circuit with an associated increase in current efficiency. In this paper, data on the loading and elution of iron are presented. Laboratory and pilot scale data will be discussed along with information on process design and comparative economics.

To address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the Narragansett Bay Commission completed a comprehensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities Plan in 1993 which included a series of deep rock tunnels. Since completion of preliminary design of the program in 1994, the program has been reconfigured in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new CSO policy. The currently proposed system consists of a deep rock tunnel with two tunnel stubs which will provide230,000 cu m (62 million gallons) of storage at depths of up to 90 m (300 ft). This paper discusses the revised 5 km (3 mile) long deep tunnel system.

An interceptor sewer, 2103 linear meters (6900 Ft), 1.52 meter (5 ft) in nominal diameter, is installed by a direct pipe jacking system utilizing a remotely controlled fully automatic slurry shield machine called "Unclemole". The system involves placement of custom designed fiberglass pipe with Unclemole. The sewer alignment is along a heavily travelled thoroughfare in Staten Island, New York with invert varying from 20 meters (65 ft) to 28 meters (92 ft) beneath the road surface, and passes through soils of Glacial and Cretaceous origin. Dewatering was carried out at the jacking and receiving pits. Details of ground conditions, the pipe jacking system and method, and tunneling experiences are herein described.

The global mining industry is in the process of redefining its activity and purpose in terms of sustainable development. This process is impelling a growing number of companies to engage their stakeholders on environmental and social issues. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have customarily acted as critics of the mining industry's performance. A new relationship between mining companies and NGOs is emerging in the context of sustainable development, ranging from dialogue to joint action. If positive interaction among mining companies and NGOs is to succeed, clear terms of engagement must be articulated, and measurable progress toward achieving both corporate and NW objectives must be demonstrated. The experience of Placer Dome is illustrative of the rewards and challenges of engaging with NGOs.

These encompass all adverse effects of oil shale mining, processing, and ancillary developments on the environment. Specific problems concern: land, vegetation, wildlife, water, air, population growth, aesthetics and public emotion; and fall into four categories of: land, water, air and emotion. Land includes excavations, spent shale disposal, loss of vegetation and impact on wildlife and domestic grazing, plant sites, buildings and roads, necessary urbanization and the total aesthetic or visual Impact. Water considerations are: requirements for Industrial and domestic supplies, adverse effect of underground water on mining, avoidance of pollution or adverse effect on surface or near-surface water, and the utilization or safe disposal of liquids. Air problems include dust, smoke and stack gas, Public emotional problems include reaction to the above problems, and misconceptions of oil shale country and an oil shale Industry. Government and industry are aware of the problems, and are seeking solutions. Last year, the three affected states studied oil shale environmental problems and solution costs. Colorado estimated environmental costs would add approximately 7% to construction and 7% to operation. The report suggested research in: (1) Water availability and impact; (2) Disturbed lands revegetation and rehabilitation, including spent shale; (3) Environmental inventory and impact; and (4) Regional development and land use planning. Governor Love appointed a 47-person committee representing Industry, government and environmentalists to attack the problems. Research pro-posals were prepared to focus on each problem. $715,000 state, federal and industry money is being committed. Results should provide data for industrial solutions and equitable agency administration.

This is the case history of how two nearby plants in Southwest Virginia solved their water clarification problems. While the solutions should not be considered applicable industry-wide, the methods used in arriving at the answers deserve consideration. When Clinchfield's Moss No. 2 Preparation Plant, the first ever built in Tiller Seam coal, was started in the fall of 1956, the clays in the raw coal soon posed a flocculation problem, Laboratory sedimentation tests were initiated; and as a result, lime was adopted as the flocculant for the clays, With lime, a pH of 11.2 was required. As the plant tonnage increased, it became evident that the amount of coal fines produced in the mining and preparation was greater than had been estimated and that the 90-foot thickener was inadequate in providing sufficient settling time to effect a clarified overflow for reuse. Testing showed that Separan 26105 (NP10)1/, when used with lime, was the most satisfactory coal flocculant available,

A fluid mining process has been developed by the writer whereby phosphate deposits are leached in place through the injection of a weak and recoverable acid solution much in the same manner as in the recovery of oil by water-flooding. The phosphate mineralization is dissolved In place, selectively treated in a surface plant and a high grade diacalcium phosphate substatially free of fluorine (hence of feed grade quality) is recovered. Because of its finely divided and powdery state, the plant product is highly desirable as stock material for the manufacture of triple-superphosphate and of high grade phosphatic chemicals. Details of well completion, fluid injection, areal sweep and solution efficiency, plant design and economics are presented The rate of return on investment is particularly attractive under conditions of shallow occurrence of the phosphate mineralization such as in the Bone Valley formation of Florida. The process may also be applied economically to the Phosphoria formation of wide- spread occurrence in the Northwest United States through the application of selective formation fracturing (or Hydrofrac) previous to fluid mining operations.

The Alligator Ridge mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 113 km (70 miles) northwest of Ely, NV. The deposit was discovered in 1976 by a lone prospector working under a grubstake contract for Amselco Minerals Inc. Evaluation of mine potential proceeded quickly. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility and mine design studies by the end of 1978. Mine construction began in early 1980. By September of that year, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold was poured a few months later. Alligator Ridge is designed to produce 1.9 t (60,000 oz) of gold each year. The projected mine life, based on proven reserves, is to mid-1988. However, Amselco is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. Amselco, a subsidiary of the British Petroleum Co., is based in Denver, CO. The company is mine operator and jointly owns the project with Nerco Minerals Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pacific Power and Light. Alligator Ridge is Amselco's first US mining operation. Geology Alligator Ridge, so named because it appears in outline to be an alligator at rest, contains disseminated micron gold embedded in iron-streaked siltstones. Although definitive conclusions have not been drawn on age and origin, the gold ore bodies are probably young by geological standards. They were formed in a recent volcanic period still evidenced in parts of Nevada by geysers and hot springs. As these superheated solutions rose through the permeable siltstones, they deposited minerals in the rock and formed the present gold ore bodies. During 1977, an extensive soil geochemical sampling program with additional geologic mapping and outcrop sampling were conducted. The results generated several drill targets. Initial drilling was performed in November and December 1977, and ore grade mineralization was encountered in the first drill hole. The Alligator Ridge mine is unusual in relation to other and more recent western US mineral discoveries in that it occupies an area that had no previous mining history. The ore deposits are hosted in upper Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that consist predominantly of a thick carbonate sequence. The main ore host is the Devonian-Mississippian Pilot shale, which occurs locally as a sequence of thin bedded calcareous, carbonaceous siltstones and claystones. The maximum observed thickness of the Pilot section in the mine area is about 140 m (460 ft). Rocks in the Alligator Ridge area have been folded into a series of low amplitude anticlines and synclines that strike north-south and plunge to the south at about 20°, with limbs that dip nearly 20°. The folds have been truncated and deformed by later high-angle faults that generally strike northwest. Although multiple stages of movement are evident on the fault systems, the youngest period of activity is along the major northeast trend. The predominant structural pattern in the area is of the basin- and range-type high angle normal faults. Alligator Ridge is actually a horst block between two basin and range faults. Vantage Ore Deposits There are three principal ore deposits within the Vantage Basin and several smaller satellite mineralized areas. The three Vantage deposits are encompassed in a mineralized zone that covers an area 915 m (3,000 ft) long and 305 m (1,000 ft) wide. All mineralized zones have been outlined by more than 600 rotary drill holes, with an average depth of 150 m (500 ft). Mineralization occurs in both carbonaceous and oxidized rocks. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is not amenable to current heap leaching practice. Therefore, only oxidized ores are now treated. The carbonaceous gold-bearing material is segregated and stockpiled as it is encountered during mining. The emphasis in this paper is focussed on dry bulk car go or the same cargo converted to slurry form for ease of handling. It is this type of cargo which is of primary interest to the mining industry whose products it represents to a large extent. The design problems associated with the handling of liquid bulk and of unitized cargo are sufficiently different to be treated separately. This paper then will consider the port handling facilities of dry bulk commodities as part of a system consisting of (1) the movement of products to the port area, (2) the movement of products out of the port area and (3) the handling of products within the port area itself. Expanding within these three components of the total transportation system, the paper will discuss the various difficulties encountered concerning the mode of transport into the port area and the method of handling product from transport to stockpile. Secondly, and before discussing the port area itself and in order to complete the conditions under which the port must operate, the movement of products out of the port area will be covered dealing with such items as the accommodation of the ship, problem associated with the very large ships, optimum berthing arrangements and the need to consider the various costs associated with the vessel. Finally the paper will review within the port or interface area such items as stockpiles, method of recovery, inventory control and an outline of the common design difficulties encountered. In all cases the relative influence on the total transportation costs of each of these dry bulk transportation system components will be considered.
