The Bureau of Mines is investigating the leaching of phosphate values from Florida phosphatic clay wastes using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as the leaching agent and methanol as the solvent. Acid-alcohol leaching studies were done using pure crystalline apatite to investigate potential causes for low extractions. It was found that a barrier layer formed on the surface of the apatite. Initial discovery of the barrier layer was made by analyzing pure apatite samples before and after leaching using an optical microscope. Subsequent Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) analyses proved the coating was calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O) and that unreacted apatite existed beneath the coating. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs depict the CaSO4-1/2H2O morphology as long slender crystals adhering to the apatite surface. It was also shown that grinding the leached tailings and leaching again in the H2SO4-methanol system resulted in additional phosphate extraction.

Activities in offshore mineral exploration In Australia are increasing almost daily, at such a rate that this report will rapidly become out of date. At the time of writing, February 1967, there were no commercial discoveries of offshore minerals reported in Australia, although there has been definite encouragement in many fields. While this initial encouragement has not revealed any commercial mineral deposits offshore hopes are running high in Australia for success in 1967. Why should mineral deposits be expected offshore in Australia in the first place? The reasons are many. The minerals to be discovered also are many. The reasons are based on the history of alluvial and beach mining activities in Australia's past and at the present time, and on the physical environment of the vast Continental Shelf which surrounds the continent. A brief examination of the two primary features which are necessary before offshore mineral exploration can be contemplated should be, undertaken. Two favourable environments are necessary; firstly a Continental- Shelf to form a physical environment for the accumulation of the mineral deposits, and secondly a favourable political-legal environment to give the exploration companies adequate protection during exploration, and suitable long term arrangements for the exploitation of the deposits after discoveries have been made. Australia is well endowed with both of these.

The Blocked Iron Corporation has been active for many years in the development of mineral agglomeration processes by cold chemical induration. Millions of tons of iron ore fines agglomerated by their methods have been consumed in open hearth steel making furnaces. Some of you may remember these open hearth agglomerates as the carbonate-bonded cylindrical block shown in figure 1. With the realization that iron making would create the greatest demand for agglomerates our research efforts were directed to the production of carbonate- bonded (C-B) pellets containing iron ore, flux and carbon, shown in figure 2.

The City of Toronto plans to construct a 1,350 mm consolidation sewer along the East Don Roadway (EDR). The project includes installation of approximately 260 meter of 1,350 mm diameter concrete pressure pipe through microtunneling methods. The sewer alignment crosses underneath a busy 5-lane arterial road and then follows the very narrow East Don Roadway road allowance. This paper discusses the significant challenges overcome to design the Don Roadway sewer using slurry microtunneling methods through mixed face conditions below the groundwater table in a congested road allowance. A curved microtunnel was ultimately required to avoid conflicts with existing utilities, condominium tiebacks and a bridge structure.

In operations that use the sublevel stoping mining method, production scheduling takes into account factors — including ore reserve envelopes, ore grade averages, equipment capacity, feed controls to the mill, and geotechnical restrictions — across the scheduling horizon. Mathematical programming is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the decision-making process in regard to the most viable production schedule in light of a given set of limitations. The majority of research on sublevel stope mining focuses primarily on a single objective of optimization, which is to maximize the net present value (NPV). Environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations are becoming more prevalent in the mining industry. This includes aspects relating to deforestation, land disturbances, gas emissions, community relations and water usage, among many others. Institutional and other kinds of investors are becoming more interested in the work that resource companies do regarding their ESG obligations. This review article identifies the gap in the existing literature and proposes to simultaneously optimize the production schedule around three objectives. Two of these relate directly to ESG aspects

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modi tying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identity and quantity operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

This paper describes research and development efforts leading to a wet process for the beneficiation of Western talc ores in which the values are primarily present as soft, platy talc mineral. The mineralogy of the ore, as it relates to the logic of utilizing an uncomplicated, attrition-scrubbing sedimentation process is described. Bench-scale laboratory testwork and a pilot-plant test program are described. The pilot-plant program included production of several tons of products. The thickened talc slurries were very difficult to dewater prior to the drying step. Dewatering difficulties were overcome by use of a high-speed centrifuge. The centrifuge cake was dried either by tray, flash or spray drying. The successful use of one high-grade talc product as titanium dioxide extender in paper is discussed. The talc product has extremely low abrasion values, an important characteristic for minerals used in paper manufacture. It is concluded that this wet process for soft talc ores is capable of producing high-purity talc products for paint, paper, cosmetics and other industrial uses re-quiring very pure soft talc.

Gold is an important byproduct and, locally, coproduct of porphyry copper deposits, and possesses potential for discovery as the major metal in porphyry deposits in either island arcs or Cordilleran belts. Tungsten and tin occur as major components of several potentially bulk-minable porphyry deposits, as well as being byproducts from the Climax porphyry molybdenum deposit. Whereas porphyry tin systems are localized in Cordilleran back-arc settings, their tungsten counterparts appear to span a range of geotectonic settings, from Cordilleran principal arcs through back-arcs to rifts. Although silver is a common byproduct of porphyry copper deposits, it tends to be preferentially concentrated with lead and zinc on the fringes of all types of porphyry deposits and/or as late-stage superpositions; the latter situation could be of some interest in the higher parts of porphyry systems. As byproducts, rhenium, uranium, platinoids and magnetite are exploited occasionally, and rutile and the rare metals, such as tantalum and niobium, have merited consideration.

The structure of an exploration model reflects a number of design considerations, one of which is the question or issue-to be investigated by the model. Thus, a model designed to evaluate the magnitude of risk and its economic implication to optimal decision making at each decision juncture of a multistage exploration architecture differs considerably from one designed to evaluate, say, the long run average cost of discovery, in which the architecture of exploration is suppressed and risk is simply an element of average cost. The perspective of the model examined in this paper is that exploration is investment in (purchase of) information and that the next stage of an exploration program is undertaken only when the expected value of information to be acquired in that stage exceeds its cost. The degree to which this perspective is honored influences considerably model design. Consider two design objectives:

Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. Based on the classical definition of optimization, flotation plants of today are far from being perfect, effective, or functional as possible. Though considerable efforts have been expanded in the optimization endeavor during the last decade, much more needs to be done in the future to optimize our flotation plants and operations. The major problem in designing an optimum flotation circuit is that the flotation process depends on the interaction of several physical and chemical parameters. In the past, there has been a tendency to only consider the effects of chemical factors such as flotation reagents: collectors, frothers, conditioning reagents, pH, etc. On the physical side, the emphasis has been limited to the liberation characteristics, grinding time, percent, solids in the pulp and flotation time. Its only recently that we are employing particle size analyses, on-stream analysis, oxidation reduction potential and the like, as operating controls. The design, operation and control of a mineral processing plant depends on costs incurred at all stages, from inception (testing for flowsheet development) through plant closure and beyond. To ensure that micro- and macro- engineering technology is transferred to operational levels, the academia, testing engineers, designers, operators, consultants and management must all get involved in the transformation process. Historically, in the 1950’s engineering empiricism was strengthened through micro-engineering based on fundamental and mechanism. Unique scientific apparatus such as zeta meter and infrasizer were used to test new hypotheses. With the advent of computers in the 60s and 70s, complex differential equations were solved to study and understand unit processes and to assess mechanism assumptions. Such efforts contributed to improved understanding of the unit operations such as comminution, flotation, thickening, filtration and the like. In the 80s and 90s with the availability of more sophisticated computer technology involving modeling procedures, advanced numerical methods, image analysis, nonlinear-curve-fitting and data adjustments, it was possible to test newly developed models under the production environments. These innovations are now available to develop simulator and sensors (such as particle size analyses) for macro-engineering purposes including plant design, automatic controls and optimization. Accordingly, it behooves the mining companies and plant operators to take advantage of these new developments to control a large number of physical and chemical parameters involved in the plant operation and optimization. This is especially important in light of declining head grades and increasing operating costs in the U.S. minerals industry if it wishes to maintain a competitive edge in the international marketplace. In regard to the future R & D activities in the field, in order to arrive at useful correlations in micro- engineering research, it is essential to consider a plant operation as an interactive engineering system representing the combined effects of physics and chemistry, equipment and operation. or more than 50 years the Portland Cement Association has represented the United States cement industry in matters relating to the technology and use of cement and concrete. Interestingly enough, PCA?s emphasis has been on concrete and its uses rather than on Portland cement. The cement industry realized long ago that cement is basic and serves its fundamental purpose as an ingredient in concrete. Cement could never be successful if concrete were not. Work with the users and specifiers of concrete had to be done at its end point of application--in a building, bridge, dam, highway or home. PCA, over its half century of existence, has been dedicated to this job. I should like to talk to you today on the less technical side of concrete--what it has been--what it is today--and what it can offer in future construction. Concrete, in many forms, has a long background extending from such notable historic times as the Roman Empire. Here, concrete made from pozzolanic cement from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius was used to construct the Coliseum, home of the Roman circus; for the Appian Way, the ancient forerunner of the Interstate system; and the miles of aqueducts throughout Europe, many of which still carry water. Silicon dioxide, silica, is the most common oxide in the earth&apos; s crust. The health effects of silicon dioxide dust have been known since Biblical times. Agricola&apos;s book, published in the mid 1500&apos;s on occupational medicine, described a lung disease that afflicted miners. He observed a disease in miners that caused shortness of breath, coughing and wasting. Add fever, chest pains and fatigue and we have the current symptom complex of silicosis. As we approached the 21stcentury, the Labor Department began an aggressive campaign to combat silicosis-a preventable disease. Unfortunately, many publications do not clearly differentiate the polymorphs of silica known to mineralogists. Crystalline silica, i.e., alpha quartz, tridymite and cristobalite need to be considered differently from the amorphous forms of silica. Freshly fractured surfaces of the silica and host specific responses will be examined. Recent research focuses on the biologic interactions of free radicals generated by mineral particles. This results in cell injury and DNA damage, in turn leading to fibrogenesis and possibly carcinogenesis. In addition to particle-cell interactions, emphasis is given to lung defense mechanisms.

Four types of slope failures in waste dumps are recognized; debris flow, foundation failure, edge slump and blowout. The first three types, although at times causing considerable damage to property and interfering with mine operations, are not usually dangerous to personnel because of their slow rate of movement. The fourth type, the blowout, is considered to be the most dangerous because of its explosive mode of failure and lack of forewarning. The December failure at Verona dump is presented as an example of a blowout. Data from piezometer holes indicate that the blowout was due to perched leach solutions near the face of the dump. The level of water in this zone is very closely related to the rate of leach water application on the dump. A detailed analysis of core samples indicated that the impounded water was due to a zonal accumulation of Jarosite which is associated with a buried dump surface. Drain holes proved successful in controlling perched leach solutions in the critical zone near the face of the dump. Monitoring of the water level in the perched zone is considered essential in preventing blowouts. The use of drain and piezometer holes has allowed an increase in the rate of water application on the dump while preventing additional failure.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nevada, hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten, which cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydrometallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hr, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of NazCO3 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution- to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hr, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 pct WO3. The pregnant solution contained 11 q of W03/1.

Dense-medium circuits have been installed in many mineral treatment plants since its, original development about thirty years ago. In the intervening, period the process has been thoroughly evaluated and many innovations have been introduced. The Heavy Density. Cyclone is one of the newer systems which has extended the operating range of this process to 65 mesh size. Several different finely divided materials have been used to produce the separating bath but nearly all new plants use a ferro-magnetic medium. The, advantages of magnetic medium include: 1. Smaller recovery plant 2. Lower cost recovery plant both in initial and operating cost 3. Excellent medium stability 4. Dependable medium supply at reasonable and stable cost. Magnetic separators are used to recover this magnetic medium and the smaller plants and lower operating costs are directly related to their use.

The objective of this paper is to back-analyze the August 6th ,2007 collapse at the Crandall Canyon Mine in order to better understand the geometric and geo- mechanical factors which contributed to that collapse. In this work, the LaModel boundary-element program along with the best available information is used for the back- analysis. To initiate the analysis, a six step base model of the mining in he Main West area was developed. This base model included a step for each of the critical stages in the mining of this area. Next, calibrated values for the critical input parameters: rock mass stiffness, gob stiffness and coal strength, were developed and optimized based on the best available information. Finally, the model was used to simulate the final mining scenario. As a result of this back analysis , a number of conclusions can be made concerning the mine design and the August 6th collapse: 1) Overall, the area was primed for a massive pillar collapse because of the large area of equal size pillars, 2) The abutment stress from the active retreat sections and the adjacent longwall panels were significant contributors to the collapse, 3) From the modeling alone, it is not clear exactly what triggered the August collapse, although the active mining is a reasonable assumption.
