The scope of work for the fast track construction of the Weeks Island Replacement Facility, Weeks Island, Louisiana included the design and construction of two salt mines. Mine #1 - An interim underground mining level consisting of a 975 m (3200 ft) incline and 3520 m of 5.5 m x 7.3 m (11560 ft of 18 ft x 24 ft) drill and blast excavation; raise boring; core drilling; roadheader excavation; complete bulk material handling facilities utilizing an existing production shaft. Mine #2 - Simultaneous with the interim mine construction a new one million ton per year underground salt mine was constructed consisting of: two 5.5 m diameter x 381 m (18 ft diameter x 1250 ft) deep shafts; 76450 cu m (100,000 cu yd) of drill and blast bottom excavation; surface and undergound bulk material handling systems (conveyors, skip loaders, shaft equipment, hoisting); ground freezing for water control for both the production and service shafts; the design of the first underground doublewall slipform installation of a dynamic bitumen shaft lining system; the emergency grouting of both the existing production shaft and the interim mining level in the salt dome; 227 mt x 64 m (250 ton x 210 ft) high structural steel production headframe; 2.2 MW (3000 hp) double drum mine hoist; service shaft headframe; and service buildings.

Central system of ventilation, adopted almost universally in coal mines of India and elsewhere in the world, has often proved deficent in providing a cost effective solution to the acute ventilation problems of remote workings in many mines. Loss of air due to leakage through a number of stoppings, doors etc. and accumulation of heat and moisture by intake air on its way to a working through long and circuitous route are the main unavoidable reasons for low efficiency of the system, sluggish and oppressive ventilation of workings. Multi-zonal ventilation system using large diameter bore holes for feeding fresh air in the mine close to a working has been proposed as a viable economic alternative. The method promises to provide congenial environment at working faces without resorting to air conditioning or use of booster fan. Optimum location and diameter of bore holes as well as general design procedure have been dealt in the paper. Finally, the technical as well as economic advantages of the method over the conventional design have been highlighted with the help of a case study where ventilation system of an extensive shallow mine in Central India has been redesigned according to the old and the new concepts. The methodology is general enough for adoption elsewhere in other mines under similar circumstances.

The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) assigns the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) the responsibi1it.y of locating, constructing. operating, closing and decommissioning a nuclear waste repository. Prior to submittal of a licensee application to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the DOE is required by 10 CFR part 60 to conduct a program of site characterization for the site to be described in such application. Site characterization includes an exploration and research program in the field and laboratory to determine the geologic conditions and ranges of those parameters which are necessary for determining the suitabi1it.y of the site as a geologic repository. The information thus collected should be able to establish with reasonable assurance that the public and environment will be adequately protected from the hazards associated with a repository at the site. This paper demonstrates by example a geostatistical approach which, on the basis of the existing limited data base, can be used to evaluate (1) whether existing information on a certain parameter is adequate to be considered representative. (2) if additional information is required, where should the additional sampling or testing be performed, and (3) whether the new1.y acquired data along with the existing information constitute representative data.

U. S. Steel's coal mining research activities are directed toward providing new or improved hardware and techniques to increase productivity or reduce cost. Because more than 80 percent of U. S. Steel's coal production is obtained from continuous miner sections, most of our research efforts are focused upon that mining system. Current and historical time study data show that our continuous miners only operate about 30 percent of the available face time. This limited equipment utilization is the result of the delays or interferences imposed by the non-coal-cutting phases of the continuous mining cycle. The most time consuming of these delays are: waiting-on-roof-support, tramming between alternate work locations, waiting-on-haulage-capacity, and in some mines waiting for excessive methane concentrations to clear. Because waiting on roof support is our most time consuming delay, several programs are underway simultaneously to address this problem. In one of these we are developing a patented microprocessor-based control method and apparatus to improve roof drilling performance. This increase is attained by using the microprocessor to adjust electrohydraulic valves which control drill thrust and rotation speed. The microprocessor is designed to continuously search for an optimum combination of thrust and drill rpm to maximize penetration rate at all times.

Several small mines are producing refractory gold concentrates in Zimbabwe and, owing to the small scale of most of these operations, their output is processed in a central custom roaster in Kwekwe. Owing to the wide variations in the feed to the roaster, the efficiency of the old Edwards roaster is deemed unsatisfactory with gold recovery from concentrate as low as 70%, and alternative processes were evaluated to improve this situation. Various processes for oxidizing refractory arsenopyrite/pyrite concentrates to liberate gold prior to cyanidation are known. In practice, only two have to date met with wide industrial acceptance, pressure oxidation and roasting. Owing to the ·high arsenic and antimony levels of some concentrates in Zimbabwe, the only viable roasting alternative would be two-stage air-roasting of concentrates in two reactors, as practiced at Giant Yellowknife, Campbell Red Lake and New Consort. This process, however, creates an arsenic disposal problem, and produces gas of fairly low SO2 content, requiring a large gas handling system for acid production. On the other hand, there are currently four commercial pressure oxidation plants treating refractory gold ores (McLaughlin, Mercur, Getchell and Goldstrike) and three treating concentrates (Sao Bento, Porgera, Campbell). One other concentrate oxidation plant is being constructed (Con), and several more are being considered.

Nautilus is completing the world's first environmental impact assessment (EIA) of seafloor mineral extraction and Nautilus has gained extensive experience conducting environmental studies in subsea environments. Nautilus is currently working on the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea, where high grade seafloor massive sulfide deposits lie at ~1600 m water depth. Conducting an EIA in the deep sea presents some interesting and exciting challenges. Seafloor studies commenced in December 2005 using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) fitted out with highly specialized scientific equipment to conduct water quality, sediment, biological and oceanographic studies. During 2007 and 2008, Nautilus launched two two 30-day ROV programs dedicated to environmental baseline studies and during this campaign, over 550 biological, sediment and water samples were collected and over 20,000 seafloor observations were logged. On board specialists included an international team of experts in the field of deep sea marine science. Collaboration between industry and scientific research institutions allows data to be collected for the EIA but also provides an extraordinary opportunity for researchers to access sites that might otherwise remain unobtainable to science. Denison Mines Limited, Canada's largest uranium producer located in Northern Ontario recently embarked upon an extensive development program that would allow them to substantially increase production and also meet the more stringent air quality standards established by the ministry of Natural Resources. To proceed with this program it was essential that the fresh air supply be greatly increased to the underground workings. A major portion of the mining area is located under Quirke Lake on the north limb of a syncline termed the Quirke Lake trough. The Denison engineers determined the most practical size and location for a proposed new fresh air shaft, eventually deciding to drive a 25 foot diameter shaft, 490 square feet in section for 1,800 feet long vertically. The shaft collar would be located on Roman Island, an island in Quirke Lake. A test hole was drilled from Roman Island to determine the ground through which the ventilation shaft would pass. This drill hole confirmed the location of the Quirke Lake over-thrust fault, a highly fractured water bearing zone 165 feet thick, approximately 800 feet below surface. Plans were made by Denison Mines Limited to seal and consolidate this ground when it was encountered by the shaft.

Ground pillar control in soil and weak rock often represents a critical and sometimes a determining factor for mined underground civil structures. A concept is desirable that minimizes the restrictions possibly imposed by pillar control requirements on geometrical tunnel characteristics and on the mining operation itself. Conventional concepts are discussed and an alternative concept is introduced. This concept reduces pillar control requirements to ground control measures required with "regular" tunnels. The conventional model of pillar mechanics with potential yielding of a ground body in more than one direction, is then avoided. Due to the complexity of pillar mechanics, the level of engineered design furnished to the contractor is crucial to optimizing ground pillar control. Conventional versus alternative contractual arrangements for pillar control are described and their important role is illustrated. The concept introduced relates to principles inherent to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). However, tunnel projects using other mining concepts can employ alternative ground pillar control principles as well, if certain criteria are observed. Case histories in the United States and abroad are presented and the impacts from different concepts of ground pillar control are illustrated. The paper concludes by analyzing concept characteristics that can infer monetary impacts on both the owner and the contractor.

Gold plant performance during the start-up period, which extends until capacity production is sustained, has a major impact on the internal rate of return and the net present value of gold projects regardless of mining and processing configurations. The start-up period experiences substandard production, extra expenses, and sometimes reduced recovery. This results in lost profits, a portion of which are recouped at the end of the life of the mine. Poor start-up performance can put projects into financial jeopardy. The gold mining industry regularly experiences start-ups ranging from good to poor. Problem areas, which affect start-up performance, include shortcomings in ore reserve sampling and testing, equipment design and installation, untrained plant operators, inability to cope with problems which arise, and organization of the maintenance program. An investment, equal to 0.5% to 1.0% of plant capital cost, in programs to prepare for start-up, in advance, is recommended. Investment in such a program will make a good start-up possible. Without it the best result which can normally be expected is a fair start-up. Developers of new gold mines are urged to compare the cost of this investment with the anticipated increase in project net present value. Funds for this investment should be included in feasibility studies.

Rare-earth elements have some unique properties that are used in many common applications, such as TV screens and lighters. In the 1970's, rare-earths began to be used in a new generation of magnetic materials that have very unique characteristics. Not only were these stronger in the sense of attraction force between a magnet and mild steel (high induction, B), the coercivity (He) is extremely high. This property makes the magnetization of the magnet body composed of a rare-earth element alloy very stable, i.e., it cannot easily be demagnetized.

Two types of hydrothermal massive sulfide fields were discovered in the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) in the last twenty years. The first type associates with basalts and includes the TAG, Snakepit, Broken Spur, Lucky Strike and Krasnov hydrothermal fields. The second type is related to ultramafic rocks and represented by the Logatchev, Rainbow and Ashadze hydrothermal fields. In 2007 a new, probably, the largest cluster of hydrothermal massive sulfide field on the MAR (Fig. 1), related both to basaltic and ultramafic rocks, was discovered at 13°31'N of the MAR (Beltenev et al., 2007). The effectiveness of coal mine face ventilation and the ability of air flow to maintain satisfactory methane and respirable dust levels in the working face area has been studied through the use of scale modeling techniques and underground testing procedures. In particular, consideration has been given to examination of the effects of operation of a high air flow machine mounted dust scrubber unit on face air patterns. Results obtained through a cooperative study with the Peabody Coal Company demonstrate that new mining cycles can be considered which increase production efficiency while maintaining satisfactory ventilation conditions.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. This paper documents an effort to explain cutterhead torque behavior observed during slurry pressure balance TBM tunneling through soft ground on the Los Angeles Clearwater project. AI machine learning and mechanics model-based learning was used to characterize cutterhead torque behavior including the TBM operating and ground parameters that influence cutterhead torque. Also, key parameters were from the slurry circuit data, including fines content, in-situ density, pore water fraction and solids content were included. The paper details what was learned using these new data-driven approaches as well as limitations with AI machine learning.

In a dispersion of particles in liquid a net charge will develop at the particle-liquid interface. This surface charge is usually due to the adsorption of charged material from solution. The existence of this surface charge gives rise to the formation of the electric double layer of counter-ions which surrond the charged particle. The particle surface charge and the electrostatic repulsion which exists between similarly charged particles is the primary stabilization mechanism for lyophobic colloids (1). The separation of charge which occurs at the particle-liquid interface gives rise to several dynamic phenomena associated with colloidal systems or with solid-liquid interfaces in general. These phenomena are known as electrokinetic phenomena and the four classic electrokinetic phenomena are; electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation or Dorn potential. The actual driving force for electrokinetic phenomena is not the surface charge per se, but the charge at the interface between the liquid which is hydrodynamically bound to the particle surface and the bulk fluid. This interface is known as the slipping plane or the plane of shear and the potential at this interface is the zeta potential (2). The factors linking the electrokinetic phenomena is that they involve a relative motion between the liquid and the charged particle or solid surface and the driving force is the zeta potential of the solid. In addition to the four classic electrokinetic phenomena there are two additional electrokinetic effects in disperse systems; the electro-acoustic effects. When an alternating electric field is applied to a cooloidal dispersion the particles will move in the field due to their net zeta potential. If there is a density difference between the particles and the fluid this motion will result in the development of an acoustic wave. The effect was discovered at Matec and has been termed the Electrokinetic Sonic Amplitude or ESA (3). ESA is the pressure amplitude generated by the colloid per unit applied electric field strength and has SI units of pascals per volt per meter. When an alternating pressure field (acoustic wave) is applied to a colloidal dispersion the inverse of the ESA effects occurs. A density difference between the disperse phase and the continuous phase leads to a relative motion between the particles and the surrounding liquid. This means that there will be a periodic displacement between the charged particle and the oppositely charged counter-ions in the electric double year. This displacement results in the development of an alternating dipole moment at the frequency of the applied field. This effect is termed the Ultrasonic Vibration Potential or UVP and was first predicted for electrolyte solutions by Debye in 1933 (4). UVP is measured in units of volts per unit velocity amplitude of the applied acoustic field or volts per meter per second. In 1938, Rutgers (5) and Hermans (6) pointed out that the effect would also be present in colloidal dispersions. A detailed theory for UVP effects in colloids, also called CVP, was first presented by Enderby in 1951 (7). Extensive studies of the UVP in electrolytes have been carried out by Yeager et al (8). Recently, O&apos;Brien (9) has developed a general theoretical treatment of electro- acoustic effects in colloids and has derived a reciprocal relation linking ESA and CVP effects. The most commonly studied electrokinetic phenomena is electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is the movement of charges particles in an applied electric field. The velocity of the particle divided by the applied electric field strength is the electrophoretic mobility of the particle. The zeta potential can be calculated from this mobility (2). The magnitude of both the ESA and CVP effects are directly proportional to the electrophoretic mobility of the particles. The mobility determined by the two electro-acoustic effects is the dynamic or AC mobility of the particles.

A prototype expert system for planning and designing an underground coal mine has been developed in a doctoral study at the University of Kentucky. This prototype expert system for underground coal mine planning and designing consists of a number of knowledge bases concerning different elements of design (e.g., ground control, excavation and bulk materials handling, ventilation, etc.). The objective of this paper is to present the development process of the ventilation design knowledge base for this prototype. This expert system prototype is intended for building an instructional expert system for underground coal mine design. Therefore, the undergraduate course on mine design has been used as the basis, for its development. Because of the availability of knowledge and expertise, this research study has been limited to development of a knowledge model for the Appalachian coal mining region.

A test of a solvent extraction (SX) pilot plant featuring electrostatic coalescence has been performed by C-E Natco at the United Nuclear uranium mill in Church Rock, New Mexico. Operating in parallel with the United Nuclear SX system, the C-E Natco electrostatic SX pilot plant exhibited comparable extraction efficiency to the United Nuclear system which utilizes conventional mixer-settlers. The C-E Natco pilot, however, operated at much higher liquid loading rates and exhibited less communication between the aqueous phases of the extraction and stripping circuits.

Gentlemen, today I would like to talk to you about metal and nonmetal mine health and safety--past, present and future. Briefly, I will comment on the past because it is important to an understanding of our present activity and our plans for the future. Federal inspection of noncoal mines was not authorized until 1966, when congress passed the federal metal and nonmetal mine health and safety act; public law 89-577, with the passage of this act, the federal inspector, for the first time, had the delegated authority and responsibility to enforce health and safety regulations designed to prevent personal injuries and occupational diseases, the new law also provided for the education and training of our miners; assistance to the operator through the transmission of technical and scientific information and assistance and equally important, the law made provision for state participation in the congressional mandate to prevent injuries and save lives in the mineral industry, Before I tell you about our program and our future plans, I want you to know that I am here to listen as well as to talk! In my view, the only kind of communication that is meaningful is two-way communication. Our nationwide progress in metal and nonmetal mine health and safety during 1972 cannot be measured in reduced fatalities or injuries. The unforeseen tragedy that took pace in Kellogg, Idaho, in may of last year mode that almost a certainty.

An important tool for use in the geochemical assessment of abandoned mine-waste piles is a leach procedure that can easily be done in the field and used for on-site screening of historic mine-waste material. We have developed a simple field leach test that is an effective indicator of waste pile geochemistry and can be used in order to establish the relative geochemical fingerprint for a given pile. This simple procedure also provides indication of the potential chemical composition of run-off from the weathered surface of these piles. As part of developing the technique, a comparative study was carried out on eight mine-waste composite samples from different deposit types. Splits of all eight composites were leached using the field leach test procedure and a modified version of EPA Method 1312 (SPLP). We found that the field leach test consistently provides relative indication of leachate geochemical trends comparable to leachate data derived from the more regulated, time consuming and laborious EPA Method 13 12 (SPLP).

Hanford Reservation, in the State of Washington, with its deep basalt formations, is one of the three sites recommended by the Department of Energy for detailed investigations in order to select the first nuclear waste repository in the United States. Information obtained from several deep bore-holes drilled at Hanford indicates that the underground facility can be developed in one of the major basalt flows belonging to the Grande Ronde Formation in the Columbia Plateau, at depths greater than 3200 ft. One of the main concerns in the underground repository design is the achievement of acceptable environmental conditions during the development and the operation of the repository. For this, ventilation and air-conditioning are of prime importance and should be fully addressed. Besides the factors that determine the airflow requirements to meet the personnel and equipment operation needs, there are two major concerns that impact on the ventilation system design: the temperature of the in situ virgin basalt rock and the influx of groundwater. These two factors are related by the fact that the groundwater has the same temperature as the rock itself and they both constitute main sources of heat underground. Current information indicates that the temperature of the virgin rock at a depth of around 990 m (3250 ft) is 52°C (12S°F). However, there are some indications that the rock temperature at the selected horizon might be higher. This paper addresses the impact of the virgin rock temperature on the ventilation system and air-cooling requirements. Graphs with heat loads and cooling required for different rock temperatures have been prepared for a given model and network, using computer techniques for simulating the climatic parameters.
