World food production is not matching the exploding increase in world-population. Since arable land is limited, ways are being sought to increase yields by turning_ to fertilizer. Phosphate, an essential fertilizer ingredient, is undergoing a period of growth unparalleled in history. The United States is at once the world's largest producer of food and of phosphate rock. Both food and fertilizer output in the United States are being enlarged to meet the demands posed by the threatening world food crisis. New phosphate deposits are being developed in Florida and North Carolina to assure the United States' continued preeminence in this vital resource. Large fertilizer complexes are also being constructed with an eye to both domestic and foreign markets. The growth of the U. S. phosphate industry has been characterized by developing technology in the processing and distribution of phosphate raw materials. The trend from low analysis to high analysis materials accompanied by a change from a large number of small fertilizer plants oriented toward the marketplace to a fewer number of large plants located at the raw material source is illustrative. These changes in technology and distribution have also been important factors in the development of new mining areas in Florida, the Western States and North Carolina.

Stratiform uranium deposits occur in Canada along the north shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Middle Precambrian Huronian Supergroup. Outcrop of the Buronian Supergroup extends for over 400 km from Sault Ste. Marie in the west eastward through Sudbury and then northeastward to Cobalt. Maximum stratigraphic thickness exceeds 5 km. The predominant Huronian rock type is metamorphosed sandstone (quartzite), with sub- ordinate argillite, conglomerate, mixtite (possibly tillite), volcanic rocks, and minor limestone, Much of the quartzite is highly feldspathic. Substantial uranium ore was first discovered in Huronian rocks in 1953 and has been exploited continuously since the initial mine-mill plant was constructed at the Pronto ore body, 30 km south of the present townsite of Elliot Lake. Only one ore body remains in production, however. It is shared by Rio Algom and Denison Mines 14 km north of the town of Elliot Lake.

Since the early 1970's, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has carried out exploration geophysical research on non-basemetal strategic mineral commodities, including uranium, lithium, gold, potash, and chromite. The chromite study (largely completed) and the potash study (still going on) carried out during the past 4 years have not been aimed at the discovery of new ore reserves, but instead were designed to complement exploration by private mining companies. The USGS has carried out research not normally conducted by these companies, but which can be used by them in their efforts to increase production of strategic minerals. Results of the chromite and potash studies highlight the importance of: 1) a laboratory-research phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on any new commodity; 2) an operative or functional ore-deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; 3) indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties; and 4) the use of a systematic inverse-cost sequential-exploration (i.e. lowest resolution and lowest cost first) strategy to keen the exploration economically reasonable. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

A geological and geophysical study was con-ducted at the area of Stylos, Hania in order to study the possible mechanisms of saltwater contamination. A new detailed geologic map in scale 1:5,000 was combined with the results of a time lapse geophysical survey using seismic and electrical methods. A fault system in the N-NE direction possibly favors the saltwater intrusion.

To adequately attack the longwall dust problem, the US Bureau of Mines funded a contract to define dust sources on a longwall mine face area. The study examined the shearer during sumping, cutting, and tramming, the conveyor, and the roof supports. Tests showed the shearer to be the major dust source. Introduction Long-term illnesses place a heavy burden on miners, the mining industry, and taxpayers. Black lung payments to more than 400,000 miners and their survivors exceeded $9 billion between 1970 and 1980. They are continuing at a rate of $1 billion per year. Recent MSHA data indicate more than 50% of the longwall faces are still out of compliance with the 2 mg/m3 (0.00007 oz per cu ft) respirable dust regulation. Allowable dust limits are often further reduced owing to the presence of silica dust. This substantially increases the problem's severity. Research in the 1970s showed that by modifying the mining method through changing drum-type mining machines from high rpm shallow cutting to slow rpm deep cutting, both specific dust and energy could be reduced (Black et al., 1978; Ludlow and Wilson, 1982; Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). The coal mining industry is using more longwall equipment to economically obtain high productivity. This high production rate, however, makes it difficult for longwalls to meet the legal dust standard. Research is showing how both these concerns may be addressed at the mining face. Results reported here explain the relationship of various major elements of the longwall system to dust generation on the longwall face. This paper is based on work completed by Foster-Miller Associates Inc. Objectives were to differentiate dust sources on the longwall face and to quantify dust levels for various elements of the shearer drum. The work was accomplished in two phases. Jonathon Ludlow, project engineer for FMA, developed and performed the necessary testing (Ludlow and Marshall, 1983). Bradley, Hadden, and Weston (1983) have done evaluations on British coal mines that produced similar results to those reported here. They found causative rela¬tionships between haulage speed, production, depth cut, drum speed, and dust generation. They also found that roof support movement increased the dustiness, whereas this work indicated that support movement had only a minor effect on total dust exposure. Both of these results are valid when the variation of mining conditions is analyzed. British mines are deeper than US mines. Therefore, roof rocks and coal are more fragmented than in the shallower US mines. Other reasons for the dust differences include the weaker shales found in Britain and the variation of roof support equipment designs between the UK and the US. Four mines in this report had rock roofs and, thus, would be less dusty. The fifth longwall mine had a coal roof, but the large cross-sectional area and high air velocity minimized dust exposure. Mines and Equipment Five underground longwall mine sites were tested (Fig. 1). All were using double-ended ranging-drum shearers (derds) with some variations in equipment. The mines and equipment details are shown in Table 1. No modification of mining equipment or operating cycles was made during the first phase of testing. The mining process observed followed the normal mine operating procedures. Three GCA RAM-1 respirable dust monitors and two vortex anemometers with cycle notations on portable tape recorders were used in each face area. The start and end of each cycle segment were recorded. INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor's methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. Despite a recession that's crippling many US industries, and a UMW strike that wasn't supposed to happen, 1981 was a fairly good year for the coal industry. The big news was record-high exports. Queues of colliers waited for weeks at Hampton Roads, VA, and Baltimore, MD, to load coal destined for Europe and the Far East. Private industry and city governments began scrambling for a share of the export boom, and port developments were planned in nearly every coastal state. Coal exports jumped from about 82 Mt (90 million st) in 1980 to a record 83 Mt (92 million st) in 1981, according to the National Coal Association. NCA projects exports to remain at this level 1982. The following statistics illustrate industry performance in other areas: • Demand by domestic utilities and overseas customers was so strong that total US consumption reached 760 Mt (838 million st) in 1981. DOE predicts another record year in 1982, with consumption forecast at 804 Mt (886 million st). • 1981 production of 730 Mt (805 million st) was just slightly below the record high of 748 Mt (824 million st) in 1980, "a remarkable figure considering that UMW production was shut off for 72 days during 1981," says NCA President Carl Bagge. Production in 1982 should set a new record, 800 Mt (880 million st). • Eastern coal production fell 7.4%, while western production-largely unaffected by the UMW strike-rose almost 10%. NCA says eastern output will rise almost 12% to 538 Mt (593 million st) in 1982, and western production will increase by 6.6% to 266 Mt (293 million st). • Production per manhour is improving. After the strike, weekly production hit the 16 Mt (18 million st) mark and has approached the 18 Mt (20 million st) per week level. •Coal's share of the US electric generation market increased from 51% in 1980 to 53% in 1981. Electric utilities are coal's biggest customer, and their financial situation is precarious. Inflation has thwarted necessary expansion plans, while shifting environmental regulations have played havoc with construction costs. Utilities increased power sales by only 2.5% in 1981; NCA predicts that utility coal use will increase 4% in 1982. The Association's long-range forecast indicates that growth in electricity demand in the immediate future will be much lower than in the 1960s and 70s. Administration Impact Industry optimism following the election of Ronald Reagan and a Republican-dominated Senate didn't survive the year. One bright spot was the appointment of James Watt as Interior Secretary, and his promises to review surface mining regulations and resume leasing. The administration, however, has declined to support federal eminent domain for slurry pipelines and expects port users to foot most of the bill for expansions and improvements. INTRODUCTION The basis for any measures in radiation protection is the quantitative assessment of the radiation exposure. Due to the extensive requirement in health physics manpower and related cost it is necessary to develop certain criteria regarding the necessity of monitoring and the selection of population groups to be monitored. Depending on the overall objective of the particular programme, the specific requirements for the measurement of atmospheric levels of radon, thoron and their daughters for practical radiation protection purposes differ significantly for those in the case of research applications, such as use of data for epidemiological studies. As part of the OECD-NEA Programme on Radon Dosimetry and Monitoring Task Group 1 reviewed available models for lung dosimetry in the case of inhalation of radon 222, radon 220 and their daughters (James et al., 1981). Using defined reference atmospheres for underground- and open-pit mining conditions as well as for dwellings, normalized conversion factors were calculated for the mean bronchial dose (mGy) per Working Level Month exposure (WLM). Task Group 2 discussed the features and adequacy of the Working Level (WL)-concept as a physical correlative of the absorbed lung dose and its limits of confidence and accuracy (Johnson and Leach, 1981). The WL-concept was found acceptable for radiation protection purposes provided that modifying factors like particle size, unattached fraction and respiratory minute volume did not cause the effective dose equivalent per WLM as calculated by either the James-Birchall or Jacobi-Eisfeld lung models to be more than 50 % above that given by ICRP of 0.01 Sv/WLM. For application in epidemiological studies the WLconcept is considered acceptable if the calculated absorbed dose to the tissue does not vary by more than 50 % (at the 95 % confidence level) from that given for defined reference conditions. In the following, objectives and requirements for the measurement of radon, thoron and their daughters are discussed for operational health physics routine and special research applications according to the scheme outlined in Fig. 1.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1 : 100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Investigated were a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal-extraction side of the longwall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. In laboratory experiments and in a longwall field evaluation, the translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust-control effectiveness for a distance of up to 60 m downstream of the shearer, provided that the mesh barrier remained relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust-control effectiveness in the laboratory and, therefore, was not field tested.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. Although the outdated idea of calculating risk as the deterministic product of its likelihood and impact is not entirely a thing of the past, a multitude of organizations have adopted the usage of probabilistic methods for risk analysis, as they better reflect the inherent uncertainty of cost and risk estimates with ranges. But are these advancements sufficient in a complex environment such as tunnelling projects, where inadequate modelling of cost and risk can result in estimate discrepancies that run into millions of dollars? This paper explores two advanced probabilistic modelling techniques for tunnelling projects. The first one demonstrates how the cost and schedule uncertainty related to changes in excavation and support classes can be modelled with correlated variables. The second example models the risk related to explosive ordnance clearance on construction sites using a probabilistic event tree.

Production of building materials such as are stones, sand, gravel etc., is characterized by a relatively low economic value and requires reasonable transport costs. That is why we are often faced, in our practical work, with the fact that within the framework of a relatively small area several open pits of building materials are, developed side by side while neither ecological, urban and spatial nor location factors have been taken into consideration. Numerous locations together with heterogeneous factors. point undoubtedly to the problem of planning the open pits locations for building mateials as a very serious and complex one. Even when certain localities are in question, it is rather a difficult task to present a real state and encompass all the, important location factors by mathematical model ling. This paper presents one of such models for solving the problem of selecting a location for building materials open pit.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBV) is linked to cumulative back, neck and abdominal disorders. In low coal mines, space restrictions make it difficult for seat suspensions to isolate operators from shock and WBV. Researchers at NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case, an ergonomic seat made with viscoelastic foams can isolate the shuttle-car operator from shock at 15 Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing using an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

To improve the sulfur-rejection capability of a coal-cleaning plant, it is first necessary to evaluate the performance of the existing circuit. This information can then be used to decide whether there would be significant benefits from improving the operation and control of the existing circuit, or whether further improvements would require more radical process changes. This paper describes a simple model for evaluating heavy-media separation circuits, and presents a case-study of such an analysis of an operating heavy-media coal cleaning plant. Efficiency curves were calculated and modelled using Lynch's method, and a simplified expression was derived for calculating the Ecart Probability value from the model parameters.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made for determination of Eh in solutions containing hydrosulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. The sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in hydrosulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of hydrosulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

Geotechnical investigations for the Mid-City Extension of the Los Angeles Metro revealed high concentrations of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas as well as methane. Testing techniques employed to determine the extent of gasses, and to identify potential treatment measures, included gas sampling with cone penetrometers and soil-gas extraction with air injection testing. A gas reservoir model was developed to predict inflows into excavations. Other studies included a hazard evaluation and a general data search for other H2S occurrences and geologic conditions that could facilitate the accumulation of H2S. The paper describes the investigations and proposed design and construction alternatives.
