"Today’s underground construction megaprojects are tremendous feats of engineering on a massive scale, excavating through ground conditions once thought impossible, using new and innovative contracting practices. But one important truth remains unchanged; projects are built by people. What separates winning projects from the rest? Great people, working in great organizations. In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. We also wish to preface this with the following cautionary statements: • The authors do not pretend to be the “Good PM” in all cases. In fact, we’re almost certainly the “Bad PM” for some. We aim to improve on those areas. • It has been said that “The only real training for leadership is leadership.” (Antony Jay) We all started somewhere, and nobody has 20 years of experience on day one. • Converting this text into some sort of prescriptive checklist would be a disservice to the evolution of project management. A model is presented to minimize the winning costs per shift within the different sections of a potassium mine by liner programming and to simulate the other areas to get all costs in order to comp re different production strategies. he model is based on a a given total layout of the underground mining which is considered to be fix during the planning period. Room-and-pillar mining is assumed to be used. Potassium extraction is done by drilling and blasting. Transportation of the raw material to sectional crushers is done by scoop-trams where it is crushed to coarse-grains which allow further transportation by conveyor belts to the hoisting shaft or to a bunker. When production is stopped, the continuously working factory is supplied by means of this bunker. Starting from a desired composition of the raw material the model has to keep the given total. demand of raw material per shift, to minimize the winning costs, to keep the capacity constraints of the equipment and to determine the planned output of production of the sections per shift. Costs of the areas which follow the extractions are added to extraction costs in order to allow a comparision of costs of several alternatives of production. Optimization in extraction and assignment of scoop-trams to sections is done by linear programming. The other areas of the mine are treated by simulation. The model output is a schedule of the calculated costs broken down into costs of processes, equipment, and kinds of costs. This proceeding enables to compare different ways of production.

The Building Products Company is Phoenix based and owned by Mission Clay products of California. Building Products is the only manufacturer of vitrified clay pipe in Arizona. The marketing area includes Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and California. Building Products, promoted by Arizona Public Service, was formed in 1970. Raw-materials prospecting was undertaken for 2 years, after which a $5-million plant was built. Initially, a satisfactory vitrified product could not be made with the raw materials then in hand. Subsequent prospecting and testing led to an acceptable raw-materials mix. Testing to upgrade the final product is a continuing process. The basic raw-materials supply must be adequate, secure, and capable of sustaining close tolerances in the final product. These needs are met by mining four geologic materials at three different localities: (1) refractory aluminous shales (two horizons-one pit) Colorado Plateau Province (Mogollon Rim); (2) less refractory aluminous materials from late Cenozoic lacustrine materials near Dewey in the Transition Zone (TZ); and (3) Precam¬brian "slate" from near New River along the southern edge of the TZ. Other additives include grog (ground-up, broken pipe) and barium carbonate that ties up what gypsum there is. Calcium magnesium carbonates are deleterious components that are minimized by careful selection of the mined products. The raw materials are blended and mixed, ground to 12 mesh, mixed in a pug mill, depleted of air, extruded into pipe ranging from 6 inches to 42 inches in diameter, transported to a hot-air drying room, fork-lifted to an appropriate kiln, and fired at a 1900-2000° F range. The "Rim" kaolinitic shales, being the most refractory ingredient, stabilize the pipe during the firing process. They are very plastic, and therefore facilitate extrusion. The Dewey clay fuses at a low temperature and forms an impervious glasslike binder. It also is plastic. The "slate" forms platy particles that tend to orient themselves during laminar flow. This provides strength for both the green and dried product. It doesn't absorb water, which helps the drying process. Grog remains stable during firing, and therefore helps to control shrinkage. The development of appropriate raw materials and proper mixtures has been done empirically.

The higher stress zone adjacent to an underground opening causes a velocity anomaly that can be mapped in favorable conditions with an acoustic cross-borehole logging system. Bureau personnel used a specialized system at the Colorado School of Mines test site near Idaho Springs, Colorado, to locate the Edgar Mine tunnel and its associated stress anomaly. Data from the logging system' were processed with a tomographic image reconstruction algorithm to map the opening and the location of the high velocity zone around the opening. The velocity imagery from tomographic analysis compared favorably with predictions from numerical modelling of the location of the stress anomaly.

This paper describes an economical method of upgrading a clay deposit using conventional separation processes into a suitable cement plant feed. The natural size difference of clay and silica in the clay deposit is utilized in the dry air classification device. A case study in which the raw material from a clay deposit is converted into a portland cement plant feed is presented.

A fuel-rich fire exists when the quantity of fuel exceeds the oxygen available to support complete combustion. The transition of a mine fire from Oxygen- rich to Fuel-rich combustion, at this time, represents a point-of-no-return in the fire fighting efforts. Once the transition has been made to fuel-rich the fire can spread at a rate 6 to 10 times as fast as in the oxygen-rich state. Utilizing available technology the fire fighters are left to seal the fuel-rich fie as the only technique to extinguish it. In order to minimize the devastating effects of a fuel- rich fire it is important to understand the means by which the fire becomes fuel-rich and by what means the fire may be returned to an oxygen-rich state. This paper covers: the development mechanism of a fuel- rich fire in a coal mine entry and the physical and chemical effects of applying water to a fire. Experiments concerning these matters have been conducted in a 30 cm square wind tunnel constructed at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as a model coal mine entry. This paper also addresses the results obtained in testing application of a water mist to fuel-rich fires in this model. These tests have centered on the development profile of a fuel-rich fire in a duct and demonstrate a means of regaining control of a fuel-rich fire by returning it to an oxygen-rich state.

Despite ongoing digitization and “hardware” technological advances, geotechnical uncertainty remains the most significant risk in underground and tunnel construction. And, whilst they are commonly held up as an example of the sophistication of the industry, the practice of drafting and using geotechnical baseline reports is subject to a wide range of influences, not all of which support good risk management. Uncertainties in predicting ground behavior, the gap between the pre-construction assumptions, and the systemic response to construction remains a significant technical and communication challenge. Accordingly, this paper presents a framework to quantify geotechnical uncertainty using geostatistics and translate these into practical tools for ground risk management throughout planning, procurement and construction. Adopting even some of the principles of this framework should provide improvements to contract risk management and should assist to minimize the potential for commercial losses.

INTRODUCTION On February 17, 1995, WMATA Contractor J.F. Shea holed through the last segment of rock tunnels of the planned 103-Mile Rapid Transit System for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Through the joined efforts and cooperation between the owner and the contractor, the project was completed on time and within budget. The Glenmont extension is on schedule to open in Mid-1998. The complete 103-mile system is scheduled to open in 2001. WMATA’s earlier 19 miles of rock tunnels had been done since 1976 ? By drill and blast with heavy horseshoe steel sets, sets with shotcreting over wire-fabric by TBM and NATM. All rock tunnels were primarily in metamorphic gneiss and schist, part of an east coast lithology that outcrops in a band running from below Richmond, Va. To above New York City. The 5,400 ft. long twin six meter tunnels of the Glenmont line had been earlier de-signed in 1979 by URS of NYC using Jenny Engineering of Pittsburgh, Pa., as a tunnel design specialist sub consultant. Jenny had provided two alternative designs, one conventional drill and blast horseshoe and one for Tunnel Boring Machine. Funding considerations had put the design on the shelf and it was clear that the state of the art had led to improved design methods in the intervening years. Before URS was tasked to update their design in1992, the Authority reviewed its earlier hard-rock experiences in light of the funding mandate to complete each segment on a limited budget and an expedited schedule. Many factors considered and many opinions were in leading to a final decision to drop the earlier designs and redesign for a single designated means of tunneling. That method was the New Austrian Tunneling Method. The NATM had been used earlier on WMATA for both soft-ground and rock tunnels. In the public’s eyes the NATM had become inextricably linked with the use of PVC’s and filter material enveloping or partially enveloping the underground structures to give the holy grail of tunnels, a water-tight structure. Although this link of waterproofing methods with excavation and support methods was essentially severed, a general feeling of their interdependence no doubt helped lead to acceptance of the NATM decision because of the waterproofing design that accompanied it. The Authority decided to drop the TBM and conventional options and provide bid documents for NATM only. URS asked LAW Engineering of Atlanta to provide the NATM design of the tunnels and associated shafts.

In the world mining scene, precious metals (particularly gold) have recently monopolized the attention in exploration as well as new production activities. As the major world producer of gold, South Africa plays and will continue to play a very significant role in this commodity. This role will, of course, have its consequential effects on the world's gold supply and, hence, also on the international price of gold. It is essential, therefore, and in the interests of all gold producers that the likely future pattern of gold production in South Africa be estimated such that some measure of production uncertainties can be predicted. For this purpose, some elementary geostatistical models will be used, and the main factors affecting the situation will be analyzed in broad outline only under the following headings: South Africa's basic gold ore potential in the three categories of: (1) ore remaining in existing mines; (2) extensions to existing mines via unexplored areas and/or reef horizons of lower grade; and (3) new mines, potentially deep or ultradeep. Cutoff grades - operating, marginal, and flotation, for the foregoing three ore categories, respectively. The availability of production, financial, and other resources required. Cutoff grades will, of course, depend on cost levels (operating and capital), future inflation and cost escalation trends in South Africa (SA), and/or gold price trends (in US$ and via the exchange rate in SA Rand terms). The differentials in inflation and escalation trends with those in overseas countries, mainly the USA, will, in general, set the scene for future exchange rate levels of the Rand. To predict the effect of various cutoff grades on future gold production from South Africa, it is essential to use geostatistical models. The applicability of such models is tested against past records of price, cost, and grade trends and then applied to the estimated ore potentials. These models were referred to briefly in a paper at a recent seminar on gold (Krige, 1986) but are discussed in detail herein. This lecture was intended originally to cover only technical aspects, but, in view of South Africa's position internationally and the possible effect of sanctions, internal unrest, and strikes on gold production, a brief reference to the third factor above (availability of production, financial, and other resources) seems appropriate.

Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn't "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark's Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today's dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

The full importance of tailings disposal is yet to be realized by the mining industry, but our awareness of its present and future implications is growing faster, perhaps, than any single phase of ore processing. Few engineers can look very far into the future because of the complexity of the problems that may confront us if we project from the general indifference of past years through what we are already being expected to correct in existing operations, to confrontations with new statutes and an awakened public in any new plants hence- forth. The mistakes of the past have not been limited to the United States nor even to other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Indeed, all continents and subcontinents have suffered from myopia in releasing the tailings without retaining responsibility. However, the US as one of the world's great leaders in technology has a particularly unimpressive record. It may be safely generalized that the degree of control applied to the tailings of a milling operation has depended upon several factors more important than national boundaries. Thus in arid and semiarid climates no incentive was needed other than the scarcity of water to create a permanent and stable lodgment for mill tailings. On the other hand. where water has been plentiful. the temptation to let the tailings run into a river or lake or ocean (at least at certain times of the year) was often irresistible. So we find that modem tailings disposal in the southwest deserts of this country, with one or two notable exceptions where very serious breaks seem to occur at regular intervals, is satisfactory according to the standards of the 195QF and 1960s. while in various operations in Idaho, Michigan, western Colorado. Newfoundland, and elsewhere the record has been less praiseworthy. In the same way, cyanide plants which did not concern themselves about leakage, seepage, spillage, or wastage of tailings pulps with solutions containing toxic levels of free or combined cyanide soon heard a demand for better control. In consequence the industry has seen a growing use of cyanide regeneration of tailings or wash solutions, elimination of leakage, and careful structuring of tailing dams. The chemical and thermal qualities of tailing waters have occasionally been a spur to good tailings management. Some tailings disposal problems for example, the southeastern Florida phosphate clays and the Bayer red muds-have been given the intensive study they merited, but not always with much success.

"An innovative method to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) and sediment loading of a recreational lake was used in the Red River watershed in northern New Mexico. The Red River drains a mining district that contains multiple naturally occurring hydrothermal alteration zones that release ARD and sediment to the river during episodic summer rain storms. A lake is near the mouth of the watershed and is filled with water from the river through a sluice gate and diversion. An automated actuator was installed on the sluice gate to close when the river is impacted by high-suspended sediment. Water quality probes were installed at the sluice gate to monitor the river water for turbidity, specific conductivity and water depth. If high turbidity is measured, the sluice gate closes automatically. Remote access is setup with a computer view screen to review the real-time system status. Once the turbidity drops below a threshold, the sluice gate is reopened remotely. The automated sluice gate has successfully reduced the amount of ARD and suspended sediment entering the lake. This reduction has resulted in an improved aquatic habitat for the fishery and benthic macroinvertebrate community. BACKGROUND The Red River is located within the Sangre De Cristo Mountain Range in northern New Mexico. The river drains an area of approximately 190 square miles and spans elevations from 6,600 feet at its confluence with the Rio Grande to its headwaters near 12,000 feet (Figure 1). The river generally flows to the west along most if its length.The Red River watershed includes several hydrothermal alteration zones. The alteration zones were created by intrusion of high-silica granites and subvolcanic porphyries, with associated hydrothermal fluids, into the volcanic rocks of the Questa Caldera. The hydrothermal alteration is also responsible for the molybdenum deposits in the area. Rapid chemical weathering and physical erosion of pyrite-rich hydrothermally altered rocks has resulted in the formation of alteration scars. The alteration scars are characterized by steep, erodible slopes with little vegetation and incised gullies. Debris fans from the drainages containing active alteration scars have formed and typically consist of poorly sorted sand and gravel that is distinctly pale yellow in color. Some of the more prominent scars are located in the Hansen, Straight and Hottentot Creek drainages downstream of the town of Red River."

The Chamber of Mines of South Africa is an association of major mining corporations, gold mines, coal mines, diamond mines and other metalliferous mines. It looks after those interests of its members which can best be handled on a co-operative basis. The Chamber's activities include the engagement of labour; the negotiations of all labour matters, including minimum wage rates, with recognised trade unions and associations; the carrying out of advanced technological research; representing the industry in dealings with the government and the administration of miners' training colleges and rescue training stations. Subsidiary companies of the Chamber handle matters such as the refining of gold and other metals; the processing and marketing of uranium and the marketing of Krugerrands. The thirty-two gold mines members of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa produce approximately 694 tons of gold per annum. To achieve this they employ 430000 persons and break about 8400 kilotons of rock per month. The working revenue is approximately 4 225 million US dollars per annum and the annual working profit is approximately 2 050 million US dollars. The electric power consumed by the gold mining industry is 1650 MW, about 20% of the total power produced in South Africa, and the annual costs of this power is approximately 200 million US dollars per annum. It is estimated that about 25% of this power is used for ventilation and refrigeration appliances. Thus the annual power costs for ventilation and refrigeration is approximately 50 million US dollars. The gold bearing reef is a narrow tabular deposit situated at varying depths throughout the gold fields. The weighted mean rock breaking depths and, virgin rock temperatures range from 1 700 - 9 000 ft (520 - 2 740 m) and 68 - 113°F (20 - 45°C) respectively. The maximum virgin rock temperature at which mining currently takes place is 130°F (54.5 C). Obviously at such depths and temperatures and with such a large labour force the provision of an acceptable environment is critical and to achieve this 59 000 000 cfm (28 000 m3/s) of air is downcasted during the main shift and 122500 tons (430 MW) of refrigeration are provided. Legislation in South Africa requires that on metalliferous mines when more than 1000 persons are employed underground during any one shift the manager shall appoint one or more ventilation officers. The legal responsibilities of the ventilation officers are concerned mainly with the measurement and control of dust. In practice, this is not the main part of their work and ventilation personnel perform many other duties such as measuring and controlling the distribution of air, checking the performance of fans and cooling plants, planning air and refrigeration requirements and, more recently, measuring and controlling noise and illumination levels. Ventilation personnel are specialists who provide management with advice on all matters relating to the mine environment. At the present time there are 506 persons engaged as ventilation personnel in gold mines and a further 1744 persons are employed in gold mine ventilation departments in a non-technical capacity, for example as construction workers, filter cleaners, fire patrollers, etc.

The CMC-3 new generation system for continuous methane monitoring enables on-line measurement of methane concentration within the range of 0-100% CH4 with a great autonomy of operation. In principle the system has been worked out in the asspect of hazard detection in mines endangered with rock and gas outbursts. But after last crash in the Halemba colliery, according to the recommendation of the after-accident committee, the system was directed to this colliery for operational tests. The paper describes construction and functions of this system and gives some results of tests conducted at the Halemba colliery. The results point out the necessity of using monitoring equipment of continuous operation in mines of high dynamics of methane emission. INTRODUCTION Commonly used in Polish coal mining the methane monitoring systems of CTT/63/46 Up or CMM-20 and CMC-1 type are based on cyclic measurements with 4-minute repetition of measurements. This period has been stated sufficient from viewpoint of methane emission dynamics under normal exploatation. In these systems, automatic switching-off electrical power is performed by the surface station, i.e in case of detecting exceeded concentration value the station generates control pulse signal which actuates the switchng-off devices CRA and IZZO. Such a way of disconnection causes a considerable time delay, up to several minutes, in electric power break at hazardous areas. In the methane monitoring system with the new CMC-3 station, the different phylosophy of operation has been applied. Measurement of methane concentration is performed in a continnous way. In case of exceeding the alarm value, immediate control of the IZZO unit directly by methane monitor follows and consequently energy break without necessity of communicating with the surface station. Alarm values are set directly in methane monitor. The system ensures central powering of underground equipment from the surface, and in case of power failure the methane monitor equipped with battery operates autonomously for about 12 hours. Such an extention of the methane monitor funtionality has been achieved thanks to the use of internal microprocessor controller. The system with the CMC-3 station has been worked out in the aspect of methane hazard detection in mines exposed to gas outbursts. But after last gas explosion, according the desicion of the After-accident Commitee, the system was installed in the Halemba coliery where it underwent operational tests. Besides

JOHN HAMRIC: Our next topic leader is David Huth, superintendent of sulfuric power generation, DAP, and shipping for IMC-Agrico, Nichols Plant, Mulberry, Florida. With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? But where are all those people who are going to make this rejuvenation and corporate renaissance possible? Many of them are gone-lost in downsizing, synergies, and rightsizings

Introduction Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is an essential nutrient required for growth. Since all living things need potash, the major demand for potash - about 95% of the total - is as a fertilizer. Agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times. This increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows then that potash will always be in demand. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) are complementary and not competing products. Fireplace ashes (pot-ashes) have a relatively high potassium content. Their value as a fertilizer had been recognized for centuries. But today's potash industry did not begin until deposits of potassium-rich ore were discovered and exploited in Europe during the 19th century. Canadian potash development Potash in Saskatchewan was first recognized in 1943. It was discovered as a byproduct of an oil exploration program. But it was several years later before the existence of a major commercial deposit was acknowledged, and not until 1951 that the first attempt at development occurred. That attempt was unsuccessful. The shaft flooded and was abandoned. It did, however, demonstrate the need for new technology to penetrate the waterlogged Blairmore layer. This was eventually developed and the first mines were brought into production in the early 1960s. Once the technology was available, and the extent and quality of the potash beds became known, a number of companies proceeded to develop mines. By 1970, seven mines were in operation and three more were nearing completion. Combined, total capacity then was 7.6 Mt/a (8.4 mil¬lion stpy) K20. At that time, world potash consumption was about 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy). This increase in supply from Canada produced a large potential surplus that shattered the prevailing balance between supply and demand. Although world demand increased steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it was several years before world supply and demand were again in balance. Saskatchewan capacity has been expanded a number of times. It now stands at 10.7 Mt/a (11.7 million stpy) K20. Actual production has not approached this figure, however. Two new mines in New Brunswick have recently been built with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) K20. Total Canadian capacity of about 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) now amounts to 30% of world capacity. Central offshore marketing organization Canadian Potash Exports Ltd. (Canpotex) was created in 1970 as the offshore marketing organization for Canadian producers. Canpotex is owned by Saskatchewan producers and is their exclusive marketing organization for offshore business. Each company handles its own sales in Canada and the US, but all sales to other markets are handled through and by Canpotex. The Saskatchewan industry has an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere in the world. Large efficient mines have production costs that compare favorably with other producing countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets. It therefore needs the ef¬ficiencies that stem from one organization that coordinates all offshore shipments and minimizes distribution costs. Agriculture guides potash market In the period following World War II, potash was a classic growth industry. World demand increased each year from 1945 to early 1970s. Since then, demand has been more erratic. Some years show substantial increases, but are followed by significant declines. For about the last decade, the pattern has been unclear and future demand has become correspondingly difficult to predict. North America and Europe together account for about 40% of the world potash consumption. In both areas, farming is characterized by surplus production, declining crop prices, and expensive government support programs. Under those circumstances, farmers respond by minimizing input costs. Fertilizer is one of the items they reduce. Potash is retained in the soil. It is possible to reduce potash application with no immediate deterioration in crop yield. Demand for multifunctional drilling fluids continuously increases. In the quest for more hydrocarbons, drilling has extended to deep water areas (now in excess of 2.000 m) and to very deep wells (now in excess of 6.000 m). In these extreme conditions, low temperatures, as low as 1-5°C on the sea bed, high temperatures, in excess of 200°C, and high pressures, more than 1.000 bars, in the bottom of the well, are frequently encountered. In these harsh environments, synthetic oil and oil based drilling fluids are used, but the former are expensive while strict environmental requirements have limited the use of the latter. Thus, drilling industry has turned back to water based drilling fluids which use bentonite as primary viscosifier and as a fluid loss control additive. However, in conditions of high temperatures, bentonite suspensions gel and loose their exceptional low temperatures properties, thus, additives are needed to overcome such problems. In this article we review these challenging drilling environments and establish the requirements for the multifunctional drilling fluids. Our research indicates that demand for continuing use of bentonite by drilling fluid industry is strong. Furthermore, we bring forward the opportunities for new additive development which can expand the operational ranges of bentonite suspensions.

A flexible expert system for a personal computer has been developed to take countermeasures for prevention of emergency in underground coal mines. The system makes a diagram to estimate maximum airflow rate of a specified branch such as coal face or advancing face, etc. under the conditions of opening regulators set in any two different branches, by computer simulation. The system approximates the ventilating condition underground by using both measured values and safety factor derived from the rules in the system. The probability of happening gas explosion, spontaneous combustion and mine fire underground is shown on a display and countermeasures in a data base in the system are selected according to a confidence factor. When it is recognized in the system that either safety factor or confidence factor of countermeasure has a small value, the system sends information relating to reasoning in the system to registered human experts by computer communi¬cation and facsimile. The replies in file transfer from the experts are stored in the system and reconsultations for estimation of underground condition are started automatically. As the replies in facsimile are shown on the display, user inputs new rules and, values for reconsultation. It is shown that the system is available to take better countermeasures as the condition' of a network in coal mine is changed by mining day by day.
