Longwall mining has not received a great deal of attention in the United States; however, this system offers many advantages over the conventional room-and-pillar methods now being used. In order to conserve the coal resources of this country, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has investi¬gated the feasibility of adapting European longwall mining methods to American coal seams. Their studies showed longwall mining to be well suited to thinner seams and, greater depths; and, in addition, permitted almost 100 percent recovery of the coal. Most, experiments with this method resulted in higher overall production-costs than were commonly obtained with highly mechanized room-and-pillar techniques This high cost-was largely due to the excessive amount of labor required to maintain adequate roof support with conventional longwall mining techniques. With the substitution of hydraulic-powered, self-advancing roof support systems for conventional supports, this excessive labor cost has been decreased, and longwall mining costs are now competitive with those of modern room-and-pillar mining.

This paper reports on some recent work in which several schemes were developed to model jointed rock under high stress, with particular reference to the phenomenon of "block motion" observed during dynamic loading of underground structures. Three approaches were made, corresponding to an increasing relative importance of internal block deformations as compared to rigid block movements. The first one uses distinct element method and assumes internally rigid blocks, which can break, repeatedly, whenever an empirical crack criterion is met. In the second approach each block is allowed three degrees of freedom to deform internally. The third approach, still in the development stage, permits arbitrary deformation of all blocks, which are internally decomposed into finite-difference zones and automatically rezoned during slip to preserve the calculation accuracy on joints. The last two schemes allow arbitrary constitutive relations for the intact rock, and all three schemes permit the geometrical arrangement of joints to be arbitrarily complex, in contrast to normal Lagrange, finite-difference programs, which are unsuited to model discontinua.

A number of open pit gold mines in Nevada extract ore from areas below natural groundwater elevations, necessitating dewatering and some method of disposal of the extracted water. These open pits extend well below the water table, with associated dewatering volumes greater than 10,000 gpm. Some mines, with large volumes of dewatering water to manage, have constructed re-infiltration basins to re-introduce dewatering water to the groundwater system some distance from the pits. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art of re-infiltration projects, including the permit process for such projects in Nevada, and the necessary engineering considerations.

High speed drilling, mucking, and hauling equipment was used in driving approximately 2.16 km(7100 ft) of lower power tunnel in quartz diorite for the Tyee Lake Hydroelectric Project near Wrangell, Alaska. The .91 m(36 in.) guage rail mounted equipment included a Tamrock 2-boom electric/hydraulic drill jumbo, a Haggl and 8HR mucker , and 3 Hagglund 115C shuttle cars. Several other innovative techniques allowed maximum advance rates of up to 17.5 m/day(57ft/day) in the 3 m(10ft) horseshoe section. Average tunnel advance was approximately 11 m(day(35.4 ft/day). The primary difficulties preventing full utilization of the equipment potential were the operators' "learning curve", the need for complete retraining of all personnel in the new methods, and minor sections of faulted ground.

The Colorado Department of Highways awarded a contract to construct the Second Bore of the Eisenhower Tunnel in August, 1975. The contract was completed June 29, 1979, nine days ahead of schedule, with¬out major claims or delays. The tunneling involved complex construction through difficult ground conditions. The contract, plans and specifications were specifically planned to more equitably share the risks involved and to minimize adversary relationships. The Department produced a detailed tunnel design and maintained responsibility for the design. The contract employed some new provisions; e.g., a review board for settlement of claims and disputes; escrow documents (contractor's bid documents) to determine the contractor's basis of bid when determining adjustments. The tunnel contract, plans and administrative efforts employed by the owner and contractor were very successful in this project.

A new technique, prompt neutron activation probe (PNAP), for analyzing phosphate rock slurry in-situ was evaluated both in the laboratory and at the plant. The technique yielded a high precision in the analysis of Ca, Si and H using 252Cf source. Low accuracy of the direct measurement of P using 241Am/Be in the laboratory tests was attributed to the interference of rare earth elements present in the samples, particularly Gadolinium. No significant effect of variables such as solids loading, particle size distribution, and flotation reagents was observed on the probe performance. The probe can detect the compositional changes of the feed, tailings and the concentrate streams in the plant.

In June 2005 the Minerals Council of Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Government which states an intention ?for mining companies and government to work together with Indigenous people to build sustainable, prosperous communities in which individuals can create and take up social, employment and business opportunities in mining regions?. Implementation of the MoU has begun with demonstration sites established across Australia. All sites are using a Regional Partnership Agreement (RPA) model as a framework for enabling local people to find local solutions to local issues in partnership with mining companies, governments and Indigenous communities. Mining and resources companies can provide important input into regional economic development and capacity building by working through local partnerships. Company benefits include gaining a social licence to operate, access to a reliable skilled workforce, better longterm relationships with Indigenous communities and sustainable regional communities. All levels of government, Australian, State and Local, are working collaboratively to address unemployment and other issues in remote Indigenous communities. The Australian Government has adopted RPAs as one mechanism for implementing its whole-of-government approach to Indigenous affairs. This leading edge work is unique to Australia and the model has applications and significant learning for other countries and industries.

The accumulation, handling, and utilization of sludges formed from wet process phosphoric acid is one of the major problems in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the considerations and techniques that can be employed to provide some measure of control over the problem. An acid made from a Central Florida phosphate rock is used to illustrate the effects of one process design approach used to provide one type of control. Other approaches or techniques are discussed on a general basis. In every case, the discussion is purposely limited to conventional dihydrate processing in which phosphoric acid is produced from the filter at a strength of approximately 30% P205 and is subsequently concentrated to higher strengths such as 44 and 54% P205.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

In the world of minerals exploration, computer-oriented data storage and retrieval methods are being talked about, studied and researched. The goal is to facilitate the recording, collating, indexing, recovery, and analysis of mineral deposit-prospect data. A survey has been made of the various report forms, suggested outlines, and computer coding forms that are currently used in mineral exploration to index and/or describe mineral deposits and prospects. These forms have a number of common characteristics: location, commodities, type of deposit, host rock, etc. Such basic mineral deposit-prospect "data units" are part of most exploration programs. "Data units" may be comprehensive bound published descriptions of mines or mining districts or 3x5 file cards or elaborate computer coding forms being developed in Canada. Initial attempts to develop computer-oriented information systems have run into the same roadblock: the lack of a body of organized, processible data describing the basic qualities of mineral deposits and prospects. To solve this problem, international committees are considering coding forms, world-wide semantics, and rules or standards for data collection and description. It appears that mistrust and lack of understanding of the computer; fear of loss of proprietary information; and disagreements over terminology are distorting the picture of what has to be done if the mining industry is to grow into more meaningful information systems for mineral exploration.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. Many mining engineers tend to think of the economic analysis of mining ventures and projects on an f.o.b. mine basis. This is especially true of mines that are operated in an established domestic mining district. Here, transportation costs are many times smaller in comparison to overall delivered prices. One has only to consider the development economics of taconite mines in Minnesota with production destined for lower lake ports to see the truism of this statement. In the international arena, however, with consumers such as Japan and Europe located thousands of miles from source countries such as Brazil and Australia, the situation is different because mineral transportation is often a critical factor in determining project viability. This article is being presented to provide a basic understanding of the factors that govern ocean transportation of the three largest bulk mineral commodities shipped around the world: iron ore, coal, and phosphate. The major dry bulk commodity trades as a percentage of volume shipped are iron ore, 45%; grain, 25%; coal, 20%; phosphate rock, 5%; and bauxite and aluminum, 5%. Most of these commodities are carried by bulk carriers rather than tankers. These are vessels that have cargo, usually in solid form, loaded directly into the hold of a vessel by shore-side materials handling facilities or, in the case of a geared bulk carrier by the vessel's cranes and derricks. Gearless bulk carriers are used in most cases for iron ore and coal. Geared bulk vessels are mainly used for minor dry bulk trades such as ore concentrates (copper, lead, zinc, etc.), fertilizers (phosphate, potash, etc.), cement, petroleum, and coke. There has been, however, a trend toward using more self-unloading ships in both iron ore and coal ocean transport. And large vessels, such as the Universe Kure of Japan, have been designed with a cargo capability of 157 kt (155,000 dwt (deadweight tons)). Trade patterns of major bulk commodities are influenced by the Panama and Suez canals. Both of these canals have draft limitations that prohibit large, deep-draft, ocean-going vessels from using them for shorter trade routes used by Panamax and Suex vessels. The shipping industry has developed two widely used vessel classes; the Panamax and Suex vessels. The former is the maximum size vessel that can pass through the Panama Canal, usually 51-61 kt (50,000 - 60,000 dwt), depending on the season and draft of the vessel. The Panama Canal is usually 0.6-0.9 m (2-3 ft) deeper in the winter than in the summer. Thus, less cargo can be carried by the same size ship in the summer through the canal than in the winter. The Suex vessel is in the 71-81 kt (70,000-80,000 dwt) class. This larger vessel is able to transit the Suez since Egypt deepened the canal following the Seven Days War. Recently, the Suez Canal has been deepened to accommodate vessels with drafts as deep as 152 kt (150,000 dwt).

Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

Traditional linear approaches oversimplify the complexities of ore blending. Adopting nonlinear blending models in mining and mineral processing is critical to enhancing prediction accuracy and allowing optimization regarding nonadditive variables, such as metallurgical recovery. This study implements a simulated annealing algorithm in short-term mine planning that seeks to optimize the metal recovery by considering how to blend the ore in the mine better. Two nonlinear metallurgical recovery models are used as inputs to the algorithm to represent synergistic and antagonistic blending. The results of the case study demonstrate that the optimized schedule exhibits improvements in both blending behaviors when contrasted with conventional linear-based scheduling plans.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner being considered for installation at Sunshine Precious Metals Inc. &apos;s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause-and-effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feed grade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences are useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. To improve the design of this method, the working effects of this method and the performance requirements for the initial support need to be clarified.
