Roof falls in coal mines typically occur in or around intersections and this has not changed in the last two decades. This research develops an improved scientific understanding of stress distribution and associated failure behavior around 4-way and 3-way coal mine intersections. Three-dimensional numerical analyses were performed to determine factors that influence intersection stability. The analyses used Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Failure zones around 3-way and 4-way intersections were developed. Intersection span and horizontal stress have a major influence on intersection stability. For the 4-way intersection, pillar corners across the intersection fail first and lead to progressive failure of immediate roof and floor layers. The mechanism of failure is similar for the 3-way entry but the shape and extension of failed zones differ. Coal ribs mostly fail due to tensile stress, while roof and floor strata fail due to shear stresses. Rib corners fail due to a combination of shear and tensile stresses. In addition to stress distribution; safety factor contours analysis was performed to assess stability of intersections.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The York Durham Sanitary System (YDSS) Interceptor in the Town of Richmond Hill located just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada will see the construction of a tunnel extending along 19th Avenue for a length of approximately 3.8 Km from Yonge Street, east to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. t to Leslie Street and will have a minimum internal diameter of 2.1 m. The tunnel will connect into four shafts, for which two of the shafts will be constructed using the slurry wall construction method given the high water table and difficult ground conditions encountered at these locations. The two shafts noted as Access Shaft No. 2 and No. 3 were designed and constructed to meet regulatory conditions, which required a sealed shaft construction method. GEOGRAPHICAL PROFILE The ground conditions in the Toronto region consist predominately of glacial till, glaciolacustrine and glaciofluvial sand, silt and clay deposits, and beach sands and gravels. The shallow geological formation found in the project area consists of four types of deposits: Oak Ridge Morain deposits, Halton Till, Glacial lake deposits and Organic soils. The Oak Ridge Morain is the dominant deposit encountered along the tunnel alignment. This formation consists of three deposits: The Upper Till, Middle Sand and the Lower Till. Standard penetration tests (SPT) carried out in these deposits measured N-values ranging from 2 to more than 100 blows/300mm which indicate very loose to very dense soil conditions. The Middle Sand deposit will be the dominant feature within the slurry wall construction at access shafts 2 and 3. Access Shaft 3 The base of the slurry wall will be 20.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be within peat and organic soils found at the upper 3 M, followed by 5 M of the Upper Till. The remainder of the excavation will be within the Middle Sand. The piezometric head elevation is found at the ground surface. Access Shaft 2 The base of the slurry wall will be 22.5 M below the ground surface. Slurry wall excavation will be entirely within the Middle Sand 2.The piezometric head elevation is found at 7 M below the ground surface.

MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

Concrete is a mixture of a fine aggregate (sand), a coarse aggregate (gravel), cement, and water. Cement itself is the most expensive of the ingredients but generally amounts to only about 10% of the concrete mixture. Cement raw materials include calcium, alumina, iron oxide, silica, and gypsum. They are heated and chemically changed into clinker "minerals," which are then ground and shipped as cement. Each of the four main clinker minerals-tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite-impart specific strength and compositional properties to the final concrete product. During hydration of the cement, chemical changes produce new minerals that include calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H, the main constituent of hydrated cement paste), calcium hydroxide, and calcium, sodium, potassium, and sulfate ions, among others. Two main reactions can occur that may be deleterious to concrete. Normal cement pore solutions, in a hydrated cement, contain sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide. If these alkali concentrations are too high, they can react with the siliceous aggregate (alkali-silica reaction, or ASR) to form an alkali-rich calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-N+K-S-H), which, upon prolonged contact with water, can expand to crack the concrete. The other deleterious reaction occurs when the mineral ettringite (Ca6A12(S04)3OH12. 26H20) forms after the concrete is hardened (delayed ettringite formation) and cracks the concrete. Many of the concrete bridges and structures built in New Mexico in the past 20 years are in need of replacement due to deterioration. Many others constructed very early on in the century are still sound. By collecting and analyzing samples of both old and new concrete and good and bad concrete, we compared their differences on both a microscopic and macroscopic scale. Samples taken from concrete sidewalks, parking lots, drainage canals, spillways, and a railroad-trestle foundation have construction dates that range from 1923 to 1997. They were analyzed by electron microprobe and by petrographic microscopy. Cracks, air voids, and aggregate alteration were primary locations for investigation and analysis. Using the electron microprobe, ettringite was found in voids of most of the samples, both in good and bad concrete. This leads us to believe that ettringite formation is not causing distress in the concrete. There was one exception in which ettringite was found lining a crack. In this instance, ettringite may have the ability to further the cracking and cause distress. No alkali-silica gel was identified with the microprobe. Using the petrographic microscope in cross-polarized light, a light-brown material was observed that lined some of the air voids and cracks; however, exact mineralogic identifications were not made. Although many instances of chalcedony and other deleterious quartz phases were found, no clear evidence of ASR-gel deterioration was present in our samples using these methods. However, positive identification of the ASR gel was made on an in-place concrete near one of our sample sites and in several sample cores using a newly developed chemical test for the soluble potassium ions associated with the gel. The chemical used in this test is sodium cobaltinitrite, Na3Co(NO2)6.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a serious health hazard to the US mining workforce who are potentially exposed as various ore bodies are drilled, blasted, hauled by truck, crushed, screened, and transported to their destinations. The current Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) for RCS remains at approximately 100 μg/m3 , but it is noteworthy that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has lowered its PEL to 50 μg/ m3 (with enforcement dates staggered through 2022 for various sectors), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has held a 50 μg/m3 recommended standard since 1976. To examine a method for reducing RCS exposure using a NIOSH-developed video exposure monitoring (VEM) technology (referred to as Helmet-CAM), video and respirable dust concentration data were collected on eighty miners across seven unique mining sites. The data was then collated and partitioned using a thresholding scheme to determine exposures that were in excess of ten times the mean exposure for that worker. Focusing on these short duration, high magnitude exposures can provide insight to implement controls and interventions that can dramatically lower the employee’s overall average exposure. In 19 of the 80 cases analyzed, it was found that exposure could be significantly lowered by 20% or more by reducing exposures that occur during just 10 min of work per 8-hour shift. This approach provides a method to quickly analyze and determine which activities are creating the greatest health concerns. In most cases, once identified, focused control technologies or behavioral modifications can be applied to those tasks.

Economically favored Cr and Cu leaching out process from spent power plant fly ash (PPFA) had been investigated. PPFA, bearing of C, S, V, Ni, Cu and Cr, has been widely used as an assistant fuel in cement industry. Recent environmental regulation in S. Korea prohibits using PPFA as a fuel. Many researchers have also studied on extraction V and Ni from PPFA. Due to low concentration of V and Ni, 2% and 1%, respectively, economical and environmental friendly process could not be found. In this study, Cu and Cr have been removed in an economical way and which satisfied with KS Extraction Test. The rest unburned carbon, V2O5 and NiO2 in residue were found to be applicable for indoor and outdoor colored bricks or deodorant panel. Various parameters such as pH, lixiviates and time on leaching behavior were investigated in order to leach Cr and Cu remaining C, V and Ni. Introduction US dependence on external energy sources is dangerous because of unstable political situations existing in key energy exporting countries. So, recent national energy policies call for increased reliance on domestic energy sources. Coal ranks as the most feasible domestic energy source due to its abundant reserves and continental distribution. But to efficiently extract these coal reserves, huge sums of capital funds are needed. Due to the depressed economy, lenders of capital funds are forced to be more stringent with loan applications. This results in fewer loans granted. In many cases, it is uncertain if funding can be obtained. Furthermore, the greatest level of domestic mine financing is expected to be in the coal sector. Demand for capital in the domestic coal industry is anticipated to increase 80% by 1990. The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York warns that these future needs cannot be met by the present capital markets. This article analyzes the current and expected situations of the capital markets available to the domestic coal industry, including: • current and expected future types of financing used in the domestic coal industry; • problems the domestic coal industry may encounter as it seeks capital; and • the future availability of capital funds as concluded from analysis of the first two items. Background Information Regardless of industry, all projects or ventures can be divided into four basic stages: generation; evaluation; selection; and execution. Within the mining industry, one can break down these stages to draw a clear picture of mine development, as shown in Fig. 1. Each successive stage has a corresponding risk level. This risk level defines the type of financing available to the mine operator. Mining Venture Risks A coal mining venture can be characterized by its unique blend of technical and financial risk. As the mine moves through different development stages, varying proportions of each of these risks are encountered. It is these risks that the lender evaluates to determine project suitability. For a coal mining venture, the major complexities generally occur with the technical risk. These include: • quantifying the coal reserves: • assessing the feasibility of the mining method; and • evaluating the design of the wash plant. The reserve risk is gauged by the amount of measured, mineable, and saleable reserves. The greater the latter amounts, the lower the risk. Secure title to the reserves plus title for any surface areas required are also of concern to the banker. INTRODUCTION Traditionally, the purpose of mine ventilation has been defined as diluting, rendering harmless, and sweeping away hazardous gases which may accumulate in the mine workings. In addition, the ventilation sys- tem must keep the mine air as close as possible to the composition of the outside air in order to provide a healthy environment for mineworkers and to prolong the useful life of mine equipment. When plans are being developed for opening a new mine, sound engineering dictates that a calculated estimate be made of both the maximum air quantity requirement and the accept- able mine pressure (head) loss related to the under- ground layout and projections. For efficient mine ventilation, the two problem areas that demand constant attention are (1) the control of fugitive air (through short circuiting or leakage) and (2) the provision of ample airway capacity. Fugitive air is that quantity of air which enters the mine but short-circuits the mine ventilation system through improperly constructed stoppings, doors, overcasts, etc.; it represents an investment in power consumption (to move the air by the fan) while providing little, if any, return on the investment. Typically, efficient mines are those that can deliver 50% of the air handled by their fans to the working faces. Paying close attention to a new mine's ventilation system at the outset can provide numerous benefits during the later stages of mine development. It has often been noted that the main cause of trouble in many mine ventilation systems can be found within a radius of 2500 ft from the fan installation. Ample airway capacity is essential to maintain the mine's head loss within manageable limits. Similar to an industrial ventilation setting, the mine's headings are the ductwork for the handling of air. The difference between normal industrial ventilation and mine ventilation is apparent when more capacity is needed; a plant can install new or larger ductwork, but it is difficult for a mine to install new entries or enlarge existing entries. Air velocities are usually maintained under 800 fpm to limit the stirring up of dust in the intakes. With this in mind, it is usually simple to estimate the number of entries required in the ventilation system. The problem that often arises, though, is when the system's capacity is overestimated and the required head loss to achieve the desired quantity is excessive. Experience has shown that problems are often encountered when the mine's condition requires much more than three inches of water gage to ventilate the mine on a day-to-day basis. Thus, if proper attention is not paid to these parameters in the preplanning and initial development of a new mine, it may take an extremely high water gage to achieve the ultimate quantity. This chapter will not delve deeply into the theory of mine ventilation; many other books have been writ- ten on that subject. Instead, the following sections will point out the important considerations that should take place before the development of a mine ventilation system, as they relate to normal industry practice. FUNDAMENTALS OF AIRFLOW Volume Versus Water Gage The common method of measuring ventilation pressure is in terms of inches of water gage (wg); one inch of water corresponds to a pressure of 5.2 psf (pounds per square foot). Further, airflow follows a square-law relationship between volumes and pressures where, as shown in the previous section, a doubling of quantity requires a quadrupling of pressure. Table 1 shows how heads and quantities are related. Using Table 1, it is readily apparent that, for the same mining conditions, an increase in pressure from one inch wg to three inches wg results in only 34,640 cfm when the initial quantity is 20,000 cfm. Pressure Losses Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are caused by friction between the heading walls and the air stream and by shock losses due to abrupt changes of the air stream caused by obstructions. The common pressure-loss formula for mine ventilation is: [ ] where H is the pressure loss in inches of water gage, K is the coefficient of friction, L is the length of the airway in feet, 0 is the airway perimeter in feet, V is the air velocity in feet per minute, and A is the cross-sectional area of the airway in square feet. Table 2 lists the US Bureau of Mines schedule of friction factors (K) for mine airways. Recent research indicates that the values of K are slightly less for coal mines than those presented in the USBM Schedule, and Table 3 should be consulted in this instance. It should be

"The ancestral Ringarooma River in northeast Tasmania has transported alluvial tin and other heavy minerals from their onshore source of stanniferous Devonian granites downstream into what is now Ringarooma Bay. Previous exploration work has demonstrated the presence of potentially economic tin mineralisation within the palaeochannels and terraces associated with the submerged river.The offshore tin resource lies directly on the seabed or with less than 2 m of overburden, and within 5 - 50 m water depths in the wider bay area. The main river channel continues offshore for at least 13 km, with high tin grades found within the palaeochannel but also dispersed across the sea floor as a sheet wash, a result of Quaternary sea level change reworking the placer deposits. This drowned portion of the coastal plain contains a continuation of rich tin leads as low gradient anastomosing channels, and has been delineated by marine seismic and drilling activity since the 1960s. Tin grades in the Tertiary and Quaternary alluvial profiles vary from 50 - 300 g/m3, with the highest concentrations in the coarser basal horizons. A previous offshore explorer estimated a resource of 194 Mm3 at 150 - 250 g/m3.Kenex Ltd created 3D models of the paleochannels and the mineralisation with the aim of better constraining the resource estimate and identifying additional depositional areas. The modelling was undertaken with the input of geophysical data, bathymetry and geochemical sampling of the seabed surface and from historic offshore drill holes. A prospectivity model covering Ringarooma Bay was produced to target tin-bearing gravels. Predictive maps were created to represent various features of the offshore mineral system, including assessing gradient changes in palaeochannels and their sinuosity. The model identifies areas with higher potential for alluvial tin mineralisation and will be used to focus the exploration programme over tenements currently held by Kenex Ltd."

Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

Remote sensing methods have been used to evaluate vegetative growth patterns for many applications, though relatively little work has focused on tracking mine reclamation progress. For coal mines in Central Appalachia, reclamation approaches that include production of biofuel feedstocks are increasingly attractive, as these may yield significant post-mining land values and contribute to carbon-neutral energy supplies. To optimize productivity, the influence of reclamation parameters must be well understood ? which necessitates tracking biomass production over long time periods. Satellite-based estimations may offer low-cost alternatives to conventional biomass appraisals, and also the potential to provide critical input for carbon accounting at varied spatial scales. In this paper, we use biomass production experimental plots on reclaimed mine sites established by the Powell River Project (PRP) for a comparative study between satellite measurements of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and inventory estimates of biomass under a variety of conditions. The PRP is a unique public-private partnership in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia dedicated to enhancing beneficial use and environmental protection of mined lands.

Control of the particle size distribution of a muckpile after blasting is always an important subject for mining industry. Blasting has a significant impact on downstream processes such as loading, crushing and grinding. Improvement of blasting results provides increase in loader and excavator productivity due to increased diggability capacity, and increased bucket and truck fill factors. Suitable and uniform particle size distribution results increase in crusher and mill throughput and decrease in energy consumption in size reduction process. Digital image analysis technique has been used for many years in mining industry in order to determine blast fragmentation. The images of muckpile surface can be used to determine the mean fragment size (x50). The source of digital images can also be haul truck, leach pile, waste dump, stockpile, and conveyor belt. The screening that is conventional method to measure blast fragmentation is time consuming and expensive. Digital image analysis is a cost effective and faster method (1).

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce the energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e. energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index, and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e. use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

CO2 emissions from carbonate laden reclaimed mine spoil has been shown to pose a hazard to residents in homes built on or adjacent to such land. The objective of this project was to develop a soil CO2 flux survey protocol for assessing reclaimed mine land. The research involved CO2 chamber accumulation flux surveys; stable carbon isotope ratio analysis; statistical hypothesis testing to examine correlation between CO2 flux and soil temperature and moisture as well as spatial dependence; and geostatistics to map CO2 and delineate high flux zones. Soil temperature was observed to have a positive correlation with fluxes while soil moisture was observed to be negatively correlated. Spatial dependence of CO2 fluxes on reclaimed mine land was observed on one of the two study sites. The research suggests that macro-porosity and gas permeability may be important factors that explain CO2 migration in mine spoil. A flux survey protocol has been developed, based on these results, for reclaimed mine lands. The work demonstrates the capability of geostatistical methods to delineate high flux fields. Further research will be required to determine suitable thresholds for such analysis.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the principal component of natural gas. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane, and underground coal mines must ensure that methane released into the mine during coal extraction does not build to dangerous levels. This is accomplished in part through the use of large-volume ventilation systems that remove methane from the mine and release it to the atmosphere. Although the methane concentration exhausted is quite low (typically <1 percent), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is so great that they actually constitute the largest source of methane emissions from underground coal mines. Each year underground coal mines throughout the world emit more than 500 billion cubic feet of methane from their ventilation systems. An air pollution control technology, thermal oxidation using a flow-reversal reactor (TFRR), has emerged as a potential solution to ventilation air methane (VAM) emission mitigation. One manufacturer of TFRRs has demonstrated its oxidizer design (the VOCSIDIZER?) at coal mines in the United Kingdom and Australia. These demonstrations tested the technology?s effectiveness at oxidizing low-concentration methane, as well as its ability to tap the excess heat to produce steam for electric power generation. In early 2007, the first U.S. demonstration of this technology began operation at an abandoned mine in West Virginia. The project is designed to prove the technology?s operational robustness, its ability to reliably oxidize methane at concentrations typical of mine exhausts, and its safety. If the technology is employed at active underground coal mines, it offers the potential to mitigate substantial quantities of global methane emissions. This paper discusses global VAM emissions, options for the recovery and utilization of VAM, and existing projects such as WestVAMP in Australia and the ongoing U.S. VAM demonstration project.

The 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT3) has been completed. This article summarizes aspects of liner design and ad-dresses the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented. The Mill Creek Phase 3 tunnel (MCT-3) is expected to be completed this year. It is one of the largest tunneling projects undertaken by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to date. The tunnel horizon is situated within the Devonian Chagrin Shale rock formation at an average depth of 85 m (280 ft). The tunnel was excavated using a two-pass method. A full face, fully shielded, Robbins 7.2-m- (23.8-ft-) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to excavate approximately 4,500 m (15,000 ft) of tunnel and facilitate installation of initial supports (first pass). The final lining (second pass) consists of 305-mm- (12-in.-) thick cast-in-place reinforced concrete and integral low flow channel. Seven shafts were constructed on the project. The excavation of the tunnel commenced at Shaft 14 and proceeded down grade to Shaft 9, the terminus shaft. Because of the presence of overbreak in the tunnel crown, measures were required to support the form and counteract the effects of buoyancy during concrete placement.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Extension to Woolwich Arsenal provides a much-needed public transport link to this area of London. The project includes construction of 5.3mID running tunnels under the River Thames, in ground conditions that proved challenging for the Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project also includes cut and cover tunnel approaches, an underground station, and an emergency shaft on the bank of the river. Major challenges have included tunneling under sensitive infrastructure, and working adjacent to existing operational railways at Woolwich Arsenal. This paper will describe the design and construction of the project and how these challenges were overcome.
