The Afton copper-gold mine is located in the southern interior of British Columbia, 16 km (10 miles) west of Kamloops and 257 km (160 miles) northeast of Vancouver. 'An aerial view of the property in 1976 is shown in Fig. 1. The Afton copper-gold ore body [27 Mt (30 million tons)] of open pit ore with a grade of 1.0% copper, 0.46 g/t (0.01 6 oz per ton) gold, and 4.1 g/t (0.12 oz per ton) silver, occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The geological setting of the Afton ore body is described by Carr and Reed (1976). Rocks of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras outcrop in the vicinity of Kamloops, but the unit with the greatest economic significance is the Upper Triassic Nicola volcanic group and its subvolcanic dioritic intrusion, the Iron Mask pluton. The Afton ore body occurs at the northwesternextremity of the Iron Mask pluton immediately south of a deep graben structure that developed in post-Triassic time (Coast Mountains orogeny) and which was the focus of vigorous sedimentation and volcansim in Tertiary times. The Iron Mask pluton is a lenticular composite intrusion approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length in a northwesterly direction. The petrography of the Iron Mask pluton ranges from picrite and serpentinite to latite porphyry. Outcrops of individual petrographic units are generally elongate in a northwesterly direction parallel to the axis of the pluton. The Iron Mask pluton represents the moderately slowly cooled core of an oceanic fissure volcano which built up an island flanked by shallow-water sediments including reef knolls and which, during its later stages, intruded its own volcanic pile.

Study area is located on the NorthWestern of Yatagan-Yenikoy and placed in the units of the crystaline Menderes massif of Eagen, Turkey. Stratigraphically gneissic, migmatitic and metagranitic rocks are found at the base. Garnet schists, phyllitic rocks lie unconfirmitelly upon the basement rocks. Permian aged marbles can be observed as diferrent sized lenses within the schists. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous aged gray colored dolomites and pure crystaline calcite bearing marbles lie upon the Permian aged schists. Neogen series, mainly composed of conglomerates, claystones, marl and limestones unconformly cover the other basement series, mentioned above. Pure calcite bearing marble occurances are found at 2 locations in the study area. These are known as Berber Quarry and Kavuk Quarry. Samples numbered as N7, N8, NA from the Berber Quarry, mineralogically composed of Calcite (97-99%)+iron oxide (1-3%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (97,98%), Fe2O3 (0.5-1%), SiO2 (0.025%) N9 and N10, sampled from the Kavuk Quarry-mineralogically composed of Calcite (94,95%)+iron oxide (2-3%)+albite-Quartz (1-2%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (92-93%), SiO2 1.49%, Fe2O3 0.42%. Especially in plastic and paint sector albite and quartz are unwilling minerals due to their hardness. Approximatelly 1/20 of the study area (87.500 km2) contains industrial calcite occurances. Moreover about 100 billion Tons geological, 1.86 billion tons runable (possible) calcite reserve calculated. It can be expected the calcite quality will be increased with depth. During the running stage of the quarries over burden removel and hand sorting processes will positive affect of the quality.

INTRODUCTION In 1957, diamond drilling on a magnetic anomaly indicated an extensive zone of copper mineralization on what is now the Craigmont Mines property. By mid¬1958, drilling established a copper ore body. Milling commenced in September 1961 at 4536 t/d (5000 stpd) and by the end of October 1977 the mine had produced 339 662.04 t (374,363.9 st) of copper. At present, two-thirds of the mill feed is derived from underground operations and one-third from low-grade surface stockpiles. Craigmont Mines is situated 209 km (130 air miles) northeast of Vancouver (see Fig. 1), 16 km (10 miles) west of the town of Merritt, a logging, ranching, and mining community of about 7000 people. It is serviced by paved highways, Canadian Pacific Railway, British Columbia Hydro, and Inland Natural Gas Co. Water is pumped from the Nicola River, a distance of 6 km (4 miles) and a lift of 244 m (800 ft). In March 1967, the open pit mining operations at Craigmont Mines reached their economic limit and were suspended. Before this, it had been decided that a sub¬level caving method of underground mining would be used to supply ore to the concentrator after the cessation of open pit production. This chapter describes the fac¬tors influencing the choice of mining method, some of the problems encountered, mining practices, and results. GEOLOGY The ore bodies of upper Triassic age are located in a limy horizon striking east-west, closely paralleling the intrusive Guichon batholith, bounded on the south by rhyolites and on the north by graywackes, and dipping steeply to the south (Figs. 2a, b). The ore bodies are relatively narrow with a maxi¬mum width of 79 m (260 ft), a combined strike length of 853 m (2800 ft), and a vertical extent of 610 m (2000 ft). Chalcopyrite is virtually the only copper mineral, and 20% of the ore zone consists of acid solu¬ble magnetite and hematite. The area has been subjected to considerable faulting and brecciation, which is a major factor in the mining operation. Total geological reserves, at 0.7% Cu cutoff, for the deposit were 22 316 743 t (24,600,000 st) at 1.89% Cu. An additional 5 236 270 t (5,772,000 st) at 0.6% Cu were mined from the open pit. Ground Conditions The waste rocks-graywacke, andesites, and diorite -are relatively incompetent due to the high degree of fracturing and jointing, and all require varying degrees of support. The ore zones are somewhat less fractured; ground support is still required, however, although to a lesser extent than in the country rock. Ground conditions in the main ore body are better than in the smaller, nar¬rower ore bodies. Clayey fault gouge is present in most of the faults; gouge zones may be up to 6 or 9 m (20 or 30 ft) wide. The main ground problems are associated with local weakness rather than pressure. Shape of Ore Bodies (Figs. 2a, b and 3a, b) The main No. 1 ore body is approximately 244 m (800 ft) long and 46 m (150 ft) wide. It extends ver¬tically from the original top of the open pit at 4200 ele¬vation to just below the 3060 level. The No. 2 ore body is approximately 304 m (1000 ft) long, varies from stringer width at the extremities up to 79 m (260 ft) wide, and extends from 3060 level to 2400 level. Both these ore bodies have extensions re¬sulting in additional small irregular bodies. Ore bodies are mostly steep dipping, though part of the Wing ore body, an extension of No. 2 ore body, dips at 0.87 rad (50'). This ore body varies in size, but is approximately 122 m (400 ft) long, 21 m (70 ft) wide, and about 213 m (700 ft) high. No. 1 Limb ore body is a narrow extension of the No. I Main with a vertical extent of 137 m (450 ft), average width of 18 ft (60 ft), a strike length of 152 m (500 ft), and dips steeply at 1.4 rad (80°). No. 1 East is an eastern extension of the No. 1 Main with a vertical extent of 183 m (600 ft), a strike length of 91 m (300 ft), an average width of 30 m (100 ft), and dips at 1.2 to 1.4 rad (70 to 80°). Elemental analysis of slurry streams using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) has long been employed. However, detector technology has limited the application of XRF devices. Using detector technology employed on NASA's Mars Pathfinder to analyze soil samples, Process Control, Inc. has developed an on-line analyzer to mount on a sampling system. The prototype XRF elemental analyzer was installed at Detroit Edison's Monroe Power Plant in January, 1998 and has been employed to monitor feedstock quality. A slurry system has been developed for flotation control. This paper describes the testing of the analyzer using the new, draft ISO standard for evaluating the performance of on-line analyzers (ISO/DIS 15239).

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. It measures 200 x 200 mm (8- x 8-in.) inside (instead of 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in. in Bond ball mill). Just like the Bond

The set of discoveries for a mining district or camp is a reflection of the exploration history. In the western Abitibi greenstone belt of Ontario, future exploration can be guided by a study of statistical trends of known gold deposits. In this area simple trends indicate a strong decrease in the contained quantity of gold discovered through time. Much of this decrease is attributed not to falling mining grades but to smaller tonnages of ore. A plot of the largest discovery in each ten year time period suggests that deposit discoverability is following a size-biased sampling model. Cumulative ounces of discovered gold indicate that an asymptotic value has been reached where exploration is not expected to add significantly to known reserves. This is substantiated by a downward trend in the exploration success ratio of the number of new deposits discovered versus the number of new mineral prospects. The set of discovered deposits reflects a non-random sampling process where size- biased modeling suggests that the largest deposits will be discovered early in the exploration effort. It is the exceptionally large deposit contributing to the observed size-biased distribution. Although this pattern is observed for the western Abitibi the model is complicated by recent, large reserve additions that are attributed to the original discovery. There is present in this area a subtle learning process in exploration leading up to the largest discovery. For comparison a learning model was estimated using cumulative size of discovery per unit of time. This model yielded results consistent with the statistical trends and is thought to be a superior forecast of future discoveries in this region.

This study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of an ore deposit. A combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to investigate the crystal structure and identify the individual elements, permanence, transformation and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite.

Improvement of grade and recovery requires the use of optimum processing circuits. Critical to an optimum circuit is the set point for separation. With the introduction of the concept of circuit analysis (Meloy, 1982), it became possible to determine optimum circuits for a given task. No analysis, however, has yet been made as to the grade requirements of the larger circuits. Williams and Meloy (1982), reviewed the literature and concluded that, within the operating range, most unit operations involved in particle separation behave linearly. For the purposes of this analysis, linearity will be assumed. Grade, G, is defined as the weight of the coal mineral, C, that appears in the product, divided by the weight of the coal mineral plus the weight of the gangue mineral or waste mineral, Q, which appear in the product.

The use of ceramic-in-rubber pulley lagging on bulk material belt conveyors is increasing. Many of the applications have been on pulleys originally installed with rubber lagging. There is a consensus that the fiction characteristics of the ceramic material are significantly better but the factors quoted vary, possibly because the more complex traction mechanism of the dimpled ceramic elements on the belt is not well understood. In this paper we will report and evaluate field data from a number of field installations to provide a study of actual friction characteristics in successful applications for those who desire reliable data for using ceramic-in-rubber lagging in new conveyor designs.

The method of coal pillar design involves primarily two aspects, the geometry of the pillar and the strength of the coal. However, the strength of the coal has to be emphasized with respect to the entire pillar dimension rather than isolated strength values of coal samples taken and measured from different locations. The presently applied pillar design systems do not specify clearly what the coal sample strength really represents. The intention of this paper is to introduce the concept of seam strength as opposed to the current practice of using coal strength as a prime design criteria in the formulation of pillar calculations. Seams are most of ten composed of multiple layers of coal, partings, and bone in different configurations, changing within the vertical section of the seam even in relatively close locations. The difference in strength between the weakest and strongest component of the coal seam could be as much as five times or more. An experimental approach based on multiple compressive tests performed on coal samples from the Coalburg and the Warfield seams from Eastern Kentucky was undertaken. The analysis of the results lead to the conclusion that for pillar calculations both the weighted mean of the seam strength and the strength of the weakest stratum should be considered rather than the relatively vague aspect of coal strength The design of pillar dimensions based on the above mentioned aspects should assure a more realistic design performance.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 km. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fiber in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd., of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This chapter presents the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits are outlined. Subsequent work by other companies is mentioned, but not de- scribed in detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. who have been involved in the project. In particular, thanks go to Ramon Farmer, N.G. Corner, and A.W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this chapter are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in the discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program. REGIONAL SETTING Ultramafic rocks on the South Island of New Zealand are thought to be Permian in age and occur between crystaIline and metamorphic continental rocks of Precambrian through Cretaceous age in the west, are thought to have once been part of the Antarctic subcontinent, and the extensive geosynclinal graywacke deposits of the Mesozoic New Zealand geosyncline in the east. They consist of the Dun Mountain ultramafics, a 130 km long segment of ultramafic rocks located at the north end of the South Island, and the Red Mountain ul- tramafics that occur in a zone 200 km long in the south half of the South Island as shown in Fig. 1. These two belts, once contiguous, have been offset a distance of 560 km by the still active Al- pine fault, which is analogous in character and offset to the San Andreas fault of the United States. The ultramafic rocks occur within a sequence of Permotriassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that probably formed at the eastern margin of the continental plate. The ultramafics appear to be tectonically emplaced between Permian lithologies in the Dun Mountain belt (Coleman, 1966), and at the base of or between Permian volcanics and sediments in the Red Mountain belt. The Permotriassic ultramafic volcanic sequence of the Red Mountain ultramafic belt appears to be a typical ophiolite sequence. Ultramafic rocks, mixed mafic intrusive rocks and volcanics, volcanic rocks, and volcanoclastic sediments occur in apparent superposition from east to west in the area of Red Mountain. Farther south, ultramafic rocks are associated with basaltic volcanic rocks and some sediments, and still farther south are emplaced entirely in sediments. These structural compIications of the normal ophiolite sequence have resulted from the coincidence of Permian subduction, early Mesozoic extension and sedimentation, and Cretaceous subduction along the same plate margin (Landis and Bishop, 1972). It is always a pleasure for me to address a group of mining engineers. I am doubly grateful when I am allotted sufficient time to describe the total Office of Coal Research program. My remarks are directed to our total program but I trust you will all understand my emphasis of the utilization aspect of our activities since that is my portion of the program. From its inception, the Office of Coal Research has sought out creative ideas for improving our national use of coal by developing new uses, improved mining procedures, lower costs, and appropriate studies with respect to the resource itself. Quite early in the game, our Economics and Marketing Division contracted for studies with respect to New England export market, Western coal, and similar items. Our Mining and Preparation Division has successfully developed a packaged coal-fired boiler and has partially developed a packaged fluid-bed type boiler as well. Our Mining and Preparation Division is working in such diverse fields as treatment of sewage with coal and the separation of coal into distinct-petrographic constituents so that all fractions of the coal can be put to the best possible use. We would like to be doing more work on improved mining methods, better preparation techniques, and any other mining improvement that will benefit the industry and our program. The synthetic fuel plants I will describe later will operate seven days per week, 24 hours per day. We would like the mine to operate on this same sort of cycle and are prepared to support research that will lead to this.

In recent years, a variety of new or substantially modified grinding machines have been offered to the mining industry with claims of improved performance relative to standard grinding machines especially rod and ball mills. The incentive for developing such new machines is high, because costs associated with grinding are a very substantial part of the total costs of processing run-of-mine ore, and gold ores are no exception in this regard. The incentive is also high because of the very low conversion of input energy to comminution energy in most tumbling mills. If the most energy-efficient means of mechanical size reduction is slow compression of single particles, then this energy amounts to only about 3% of that used in tumbling mills. It would seem, therefore, that there is a huge potential to do better. This paper examines three types of grinding machine for which claims of higher energy utilisation ( amongst other beneficial claims) have been made, namely the high pressure grinding rolls, the vibrating drum mill and various styles of stirred mill. It presents evidence concerning the claims, examines the range of particle size and particle size reduction over which benefits might reasonably be expected to accrue, discusses the major issues in contention and briefly describes the research the CSIRO Division of Minerals has in progress, both independently and collaboratively, the latter mainly with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) via the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) and the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA). With the dissolution of the former USSR and a welcoming of foreign, minerals expertise by a host of developing countries, a "new," more international, world of minerals is open to the mining industry. However, even in the new frontier, the old laws of nature still apply. For those attendees of the 98th annual Northwest Mining convention, the adage "survival of the fittest" commanded particular attention. Miners, engineers, geologists and other unique species traveled to Spokane in December to learn of adaptations they can make to assure, or at least prolong, their place in the mineral industry's land of the living. You have heard the tales of the spotted owl and the desert tortoise, but add to this endangered list the North American mining industry. During a session on international investment criteria, D. Silver of Balfour Holdings (Littleton, CO) blamed excessive environmental regulation, 1872 Mining Law revision and the anti-mining-and-business attitude of our government for migrations from and extinctions within the domestic mining population. "We've been on a death curve for some time," Silver said, "with a lower birth rate and a higher death rate. In the last four years, we've lost 60% of the gold producers in North America, and we're down to 110 companies. The entire industry has lost about 400 companies and is now down to 2800." Unreasonable regulation founded on emotion rather than scientific fact has been the chief cause of death, according to many of the convention speakers. B.J. Kennedy, president and chief operating officer of FMC Gold (Reno, NV), emphasized, "We have accepted a regulatory environment - but we oppose being strangled to death by unreasonable regulations."

This paper discusses the development of a SLAM II* simulation model with imbedded optimization modules designed M evaluate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies. The model traces through a sequential exploration program, evaluating each deposit site based upon geologic information and potential profitability of the site. At a specified time during the simulation, a new production plan is developed for currently producing deposits which takes into account the planning horizon and deposits which are currently being explored. Potential uses of the model by geologists, engineers, and management decision makers include setting corporate objectives and policies on exploration and production. The model is also useful for testing past decisions to evaluate decision making criteria and evaluating mineral deposit profit potential.

"MOTIVATION Tunnel construction companies must keep costs low, finish projects in less time and still meet the high quality and safety standards. Therefore, their main goal is always to optimize the tunnel excavation process. Traditional geodetical methods are used since more than 100 years to ensure an exact breakthrough of a tunnel. Evolving sensors, sensor fusion and increasing computation resources opened new fields of application for geodetic solutions in tunneling. These solutions offer new ways to reduce costs and risks in tunneling. INTRODUCTION Nowadays in tunneling, geodetical measurement methods are not only used for guidance, but also for various other applications. This paper gives an overview about where geodetical measurements are used today and highlights their benefits for safety and costs aspects. Furthermore, advanced solutions are introduced. In progressive projects, they have already become state of the art technology and are in use daily. STANDARD GEODETICAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATIONS In drill & blast tunnel construction processes, there are many standard geodetical applications used in the different construction phases, each having different requirements regarding accuracy. In the excavation construction stage, guidance tasks and setting-out of various positions is done by the foremen. Thanks to simplified measurement tools, the foremen are enabled to carry out these measurement tasks themselves without requiring deep surveying knowledge. In contrast, deformation analysis and network measurement campaigns need sophisticated planning and a profound education in surveying. Therefore, these tasks are carried out by surveyors. Profile control and as-built documentation is required in each construction phase. Depending on the requirements of the project, this task can be carried out either by the foremen or a specialized surveyor. Table 1 provides an overview over typical surveying tasks in an underground project including information about who is doing the job and the according accuracy requirements. The listed tasks are described in more detail below."

In the mobile crushing unit system trucks are replaced by a conveyor resulting in a "continuous" almost "fully-automated" operation with all its attendant advantages. In consequence, overall operating costs are greatly reduced. Because of the new designs of large mobile crushing units that have been brought on-to the market, the use of these plants has increased significantly during the last three years. This paper describes the designs of new mobile crushing units, and emphasizes the advantages that such plants offer to the rock products and mining industries. It examines operating costs, and indicates the conditions in which the application of these plants is most profitable.

Since 1992 the Grasberg Mine, located in the remote regions of Indonesia, has utilized the Modular Mining System. Over the last several years, major steps have been taken to maximize this productivity enhancement system. These steps include; the Automated Lineup, the Linear Program upgrade, tracking of Mean Time Between Failure, a MEDS system interface, a VMIS system interface, and implementation of the new Graphical Operator Interface Console with Global Positioning, This application of new technology and innovation has lead to improved performance, understanding and reporting, as well as the quality of the Indonesian Engineers. These efforts have contributed 10 Grasberg achieving one of the lowest mining costs in the copper industry.

The Robbins Mobile miner has been in development for more than ten years. Two machines have been trialed in mining environments. While day to day performance to date has fallen short of the levels anticipated, instantaneous performance has been impressive for given rock conditions and continues to encourage further development. The Pasminco mobile miner has been committed for a 1.8km main decline extension at Broken Hill. M.I.M. Holdings, parent company of Mount Isa Mines, owner of the first mobile miner, are considering a new machine for McArthur River. Robbins, Pasminco, and The Centre for Mining Technology and Construction have, joined forces to accelerate development of .mechanical rock cutting techniques in general, and of the Mobile Miner in particular.

Open-pit mine planning is a key process in the definition of mineral reserves and their efficient removal. Ore in open-pit mines is extracted bymining sequential pits called pushbacks. Pushbacks need to satisfy complex geometrical constraints to ensure the efficient usage of equipment. To date, no algorithms that both account for those constraints and maximizeNPV, are commercially available. Therefore, pushback design is done by engineers relying on their expertise to incorporate practical features intothe output of commercial tools. In this article, we present a new algorithm that produces close to optimal practical pushbacks and we illustrate its performance in real mines.
