Several optimization approaches used by the Canadian mining industry were used to investigate surface coal mining operations in Canada. A computer program was applied to optimize truck/shovel systems and for various analyses. The analyses of eight western Canadian coal mines included investigation of fleet imbalance, under- and over trucking, development of the criteria for automated truck control, comparison study of various haulers and loaders, haulage layout, driving conditions, machine performance, servicing and maintenance policies, etc. Each property investigated supplied background information for the study and cooperated in optimization studies. The truck/shovel system optimization study is demonstrated as a test case to outline procedures and step-by-step instruction for similar applications.

In the beginning of the third millennium, the world mining industry has to cope with many challenges; the continuous need for mineral resource deposits and the mostly unsolved economic efforts should be accompanied with ecologic measures mankind has to take in order to avoid self-destruction. The present paper analyses the possibilities of using underground mining spaces in Romania for storing dangerous waste and suggests viable solutions. The characteristics of dangerous wastes and their disposal in suitable underground spaces are analyzed. Also, some methods for deactivating dangerous solid wastes as well as the importance of monitoring underground spaces in order to eliminate environmental impact risks are presented.

The application of "Alignment Free” right angle shaft mounted drive systems offers improved reliability and reduced costs for surface and underground belt convey- ors. Comparisons to conventional approaches will cover installation, operating, maintenance, and spares inventory cost savings. Various options for belt acceleration and load control on fixed and variable length (booster) belt conveyors will be reviewed for operating performance, reliability, and total cost. Lastly, a case study of a successfully operating installation will be highlighted.

This paper describes a graphics station and graphics software designed specifically for use within the minerals industry. Through the graphics station, a user is able to recall maps for modification, display them on a color CRT, send the work to a plotter, and restore the work when finished. The engineer may use the system for the storing of data, per- forming engineering calculations, doing word processing, and performing general file maintenance. In addition, the system may be used to communicate with a mainframe computer for such purposes as: transmission of large data files, graphic 3-dimensional rotation of a mineral deposit or mine design, contouring of spacial data, and other data processing work.

Strategic project decisions are based on the distributions global variables, for example, total mineable resource, or recoverable oil volume. These global variables distributions are very sensitive to the input one point statistic, that is, histogram and rock type proportions. Representivity in the one point statistic retains significance in all spatial models. Spatial sampling bias and nonrepresentative sampling complicate this process of building representative one point statistics. This work outlines the cause of bias, the inability of standard declustering to correct for this bias and two methods for correcting bias in the one point statistics: "trend modeling for debiasing" and "debiasing by qualitative data". An example is presented of each technique based on a poly metallic data set.

If a fire occurs outby an underground coal mine section, the immediate safe evacuation of miners from the working section should always take precedence. Unfortunately, in many cases, the dedicated escapeways (escape routes) for the evacuation of the miners become contaminated by the byproducts of fire from the adjacent entries. The purpose of this paper is to present the ventilation-control process that would keep the escapeway free from contaminants and, thus, available for travel. A few scenarios of mine fires in longwall development panels are analyzed and discussed. To perform these studies, a mine fire simulator (MFS) was used. This (MFS) provides a dynamic representation of the fire's progress (in real time) and gives a color-graphic visualization of the spread of oxygen, combustion products and temperature of the gases throughout the ventilation system. Also presented and discussed are ways in which the MFS can be used as a training and teaching tool for miners and, particularly, for ventilation and safety specialists.

Two types of underground tests on three types of shield supports, 2-leg, 4-leg, and chock shield, were con- ducted to measure the horizontal movement of the canopy against the immediate roof. In no friction tests, steel rollers were placed between roof and canopy top, while in friction tests normal direct contact was used. Results indicate that the canopy for 2-leg shields always moves forward during setting, whereas there was no forward movement for 4-leg or chock shields. Based on the test results, a model for active horizontal force was proposed.

Ceramics are usually used to line chutes, pipes, dust collectors, separators, cyclones or bins where abrasive or corrosive material is moving. Improvements in ceramic manufacturing methods and quality, use of other abrasion resistant materials in combination with Alumina ceramic, improved adhesives and installation methods allow the use of Alumina ceramic tile in applications with impact. This paper discusses the criteria to determine if ceramics can provide a cost effective alternative to other liners for abrasive material handling applications, design parameters for liner systems, system costs, and case histories. The goal will be to provide a practical guide for improving the performance of existing ceramic lined systems or determining if ceramics is a cost effective solution for your abrasive material handling applications.

Given: the process tonnage, performance objectives, and plant floor area, the paper will outline the metallurgical and machine hydrodynamic scale-up procedures for translating the lab flotation test results to the design of a full size flotation machine installation, including the machine number, size, and arrangement. Machine selection considerations for rougher, scavenger and cleaner duty, and special considerations relative to specific applications, will be summarized where appropriate. The value of kinetic modeling in quantitative metallurgical (lab to full size machine) scale-up will be reviewed considering a coal installation, and design information for additional applications such as copper, molybdenum, iron, phosphate, and potash will be discussed.

The floc characteristics desired for removal of suspended solids by sedimentation or filtration, for example, are known to he different. In this study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effects of various physical and chemical factors on the density and shear strength of the flocs.

Asturias, in northern Spain, emits 18 Mt CO2/year to the atmosphere, which supposes the biggest industrial CO2 emissions in the country. In order to avoid CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, keeping the availability of energy from fossil fuels, background studies focussed to the selection of favourable sites for CO2 geological storage are necessary. In Asturias, the options for CO2 geological storage are sequestration in deep saline aquifers or sequestration in unexploted coal beds. In the area, there is the biggest coal basin of the country and a great Palaeozoic sedimentary basin with appropriate silicoclastic or carbonated reservoirs and impermeable caprock for CO2 geological storage, located in proximity to thermoelectric power plants and other sources of CO2 emissions. All evidences suggest that CO2 storage in deep aquifers is the most interesting option but a legal planning and a technical regulation are still to be done. The possibility for CO2 sequestration in coal beds is modest and associated to the CBM commercial exploitation. It is necessary to have in mind that the feasibility of CO2 geological storage in Asturias apart of technical factors will depend on price of CO2 ton, legal conditioning and possibility to apply emission rights to projects.

This paper discusses how the link between design software tools and recycling models can be established in order to predict the recyclability of the car during the design phase, as well as to be able to apply design for recycling on a solid technological basis. Due to the complexity of the design of the car, optimisation of recycling can only be realised based on a sound technological basis, in which the dynamic and statistically distributed parameters affecting the recycling rate are described and understood. This paper gives a brief overview of the dynamic and recycling models, which are developed for optimisation of the recycling of the car and the calculation of recycling rates of the car in the design phase in view of EU legislation. Moreover the possibilities for modelling of shredding and liberation within the recycling system are discussed. The performance of experiments on a fundamental basis in order to collect statistically correct industrial data, supported by a closing mass balance, is referred to on the basis of a large scale industrial recycling experiment. It will be shown how design for recycling and environment can be supported by the sophisticated models as developed by the authors.

An integral part of site investigations for shafts and underground workings should be hydrogeologic evaluations of the need for and method of ground-water control. Such investigations should include: 1. Classification of the problem by aquifer type. 2. Integration of other site investigations with hydrogeologic programs, including assessment of the need for water control. 3. Planning and conduct of aquifer tests tailored to the aquifer situation. 4. Evaluation of pumping requirements to achieve water control objectives. 5. Scheduling of dewatering for optimum results and costs. 6. Evaluation of environmental impacts of pumpage and water discharge. 7. Planning of operational monitoring for program modification and liability limitation. Early hydrogeologic involvement can result in avoiding unnecessary duplication in site investigations.

The paper presents models of auxiliary ventilation systems with leaky ducts and algorithms for calculations of pressure loss, air leakage, and volume flow ratio and pressure fans. Two basic models are discussed: 1st model for a duct with leakage through the flange joints; 2nd model for a duct with an equivalent longitudinal aperture. The present analytical system has been successfully applied to developing of computer software named DAVentS. A. sample problem is used to illustrate efficiency and accuracy of DAVents software in solving most common problems in process of designing AVS.

Iron carbide, containing 93.3% Fe and 6.7% C, is a tailor made feed for the electric arc furnace (EAF) and has recently gained worldwide attention as a possible replacement for premium quality scrap. With 38% of the steel in the United States being produced in EAFs, iron ore producers have an interest in becoming direct suppliers to the EAF industry. This paper explains the advantages of using iron carbide in an EAF and describes test work on the product and development work being per formed on engineering designs for a commercial plant.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials will be essential for successful lunar colonization. Several processes have been put forth to accomplish Lunar Liquid Oxygen (LLOX) generation. The schemes that have received the most study to date involve: 1) Reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, CO, CH4, CO-Cl2 and Cl2, plasma. 2) Molten silicate electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride fluxed. 3) Several others, including H, reduction of glass, carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reduction of ilmenite and molten silicate electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes and have various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at the onset of LLOX research. This paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen front lunar materials. There is an obvious need for more experimentation and study.

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. Power for mine operation in remote locations is usually provided by diesel generators. For gold mines where processing is normally desirable on-site, power requirements can be significant and the operating cost for diesel generation then becomes an important factor in mine feasibility. If a suitable site is available, a small hydroelectric power facility near the minesite can provide a significant portion of the mine power requirements. The hydrological, engineering and economic factors involved in small hydroelectric power development are described in this paper. Capital costs are minimized by run-of-river hydro development which does not require a dam and reservoir and has less environmental impact. During periods of low flow, diesel generators are used to make up the power demand. The hydrologic analysis required to determine unit energy costs is described and technical requirements for linking the hydroelectric power facility with diesel generation are outlined. Case studies are presented demonstrating the economic advantages of a small hydro installation. One case study is for a proposed gold mine in British Columbia and the second is a large operating gold mine overseas, for which the hydroelectric power scheme is presently under construction .

This paper presents an approach for developing a Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs) framework tailored to the Greek Industrial Minerals sector, due to its importance for the national economy. To achieve this goal, an overview of the Greek mining and minerals, and especially the Industrial Minerals sector, from a technological and a financial perspective, is presented. In addition, a brief description of the global initiatives to this direction is given. The proposed indicators are based on those presented in 2006 by the Greek Mining Enterprises Association (GMEA) adjusted for the sector of industrial minerals by taking into account economic, environmental and social issues, known as the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) approach.

The Green River formations in the Western U.S.A. contains vast amounts of petroleum reserves in oil shale deposits. Exploitation of this petroleum reserve calls for large scale mining of the oil shale. Applicable mining methods include conventional underground mining using roan and pillar, sub-level caving and block caving; underground insitu retorting of oil shale and open pit mining. Roam and pillar mining offers one of the most economic methods of underground mining of oil shale. A 2.4 x l09 litre per year (50,000 barrels per day) of crude oil production would require a daily oil shale production of 100,000 tomes per day from underground operations. For this large production, a highly mechanized room and pillar mining muld utilize large capacity diesel equipment such as 85 tonne trucks and 8m front end loaders. The total air requirements of an oil shale mining operations can. be as high as 28443/s. Ventilation planning for such a large scale underground mining operation presents a formidable task. The major objectives of providing ventilation air to underground workings are to dilute airborne .dust and diesel fumes to harmless levels, and to insure that the mine environment is compatible with the health and safety of mine personnel. Regulation of air velocities and air temperatures is a major factor in mine environmental control. Colorado State law requires that a minimum of 0.047m3/s of fresh air be supplied for each kW of diesel power operating underground. Additionally, 0.047m3/s of fresh air must be supplied for each underground employee, and a minimum air velocity of 0.15m/s must be maintained in all working places. It is desirable to exceed this minimum velocity in order to prevent stratification of ventilation air. Moreover, Colorado law also stipulates the maximum allowable concentration of noxious gases mine air, below: ? C02 - 0.5% by volume, 5,000 ppm. ? CO - 0.005% by volume, 50 ppm. ? Oxides of Nitrogen - 0.0025% by volume, 25ppm. ? Nitrogen Dioxide 0.005% by volume, 5 ppm. This paper examines ventilation requirements for the underground mine, with respect to air quality requirements and distribution of air in mine workings in light of the above regulations. Analyses were made for sane typical mining plans to determine airflow resistance or pressure drops and fan horsepower requirements. In addition, the possible occurrence of high concentrations of toxic gases, was examined. Expected temperature levels in mine workings were approximated.
