The paper describes the replacement of a conventional filtration, clarification and zinc precipitation plant by a carbon in pulp (CIP) electrowinning plant, with the objective of improving the recovery of gold from cyanide leached, acid plant calcines. The discussion covers the early laboratory studies to the design and erection of the full scale plant. Particular emphasis is placed on the problems encountered with commissioning and the strategies which were employed to solve them.

Methane gas explosions are a major risk in underground coal mining operations. The severity of such explosions can range from local area damage to massive loss of miners’ lives along with significant damage to mine infrastructure and ventilation controls that may lead to mine closure and loss of the entire operation. This study demonstrates the viability of integrating a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model into a longwall mine ventilation model to simulate methane gas explosions in the longwall face area. The resulting 3D methane gas explosion simulation can provide better understanding of the fundamental physics and the potential impact of an explosion in an underground longwall coal mine.

Introduction There is a continuing search by government and industry for new mining methods that increase production, improve the working environment, reduce labor intensity, enhance recovery effectiveness, improve the reclamation process, streamline the flow of material, and reduce the unit cost. Hydraulic extraction and transport methods have outstanding potential in several of these areas. For example, hydraulic fragmentation produces a significant reduction in respirable dust. The inherent simplicity of hydraulic mining equipment and the resulting high reliability are recognized. Tool wear can be virtually eliminated. There is great flexibility in the size, shape, and orientation of the mineral deposit that can be mined. The cutting, gathering, and transport operation can be controlled remotely, providing more safety for workers. The threat of tool sparking and the resuiting dust or gas ignition are also eliminated. Although hydraulic mining was introduced in the US before the turn of the century, it has not gained the degree of acceptance found in other countries such as the Soviet Union, China, Germany, and Canada. The Hydraulic Mining Research program, initiated by the US Bureau of Mines in 1958, and the subsequent research by others has provided much of the basic technology required to spur the development of these methods into a viable extraction alternative. This article updates the development of hydraulic mining in the US. Particular attention is paid to monitor mining, the long-wall hydrominer, borehole mining, and the semi-autonomous mining system. Whenever the particular mining method is also being developed in other parts of the world, a brief description of the world-wide state of the art is given. Finally, allied studies designed to optimize these mining techniques are described. Hydraulic Monitor Mining Since 1958, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), the Department of Energy (DOE), and other government agencies have funded more than a dozen programs to investigate the potential of hydraulic monitor mining. For this method, water is directed on the coal face from a monitor nozzle. Sufficient velocity is used to cause local fragmentation (Fig. 1). Coal particles are washed from the face to a trough. They are then flumed to a collection point. Oversized particles are directed through a breaker and then into the troughs. Monitor field tests were conducted in the 1960s in bituminous and anthracite coal at the following locations: • Rosylin No. 9 mine, WA (Nasiatka and Badda, 1963); • Rosylin No. 10 mine, WA (Price and Badda, 1965); • Sugar Notch mine, PA (Buch, 1964); • Thomson Creek mine, CO (Palowitch and Malinka, 1964); and • West Lebanon, PA (Fowkes and Wallace, 1968). Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. A National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded project (NASA Grant #NAG13-02026) is underway to determine the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map mineralogy that affects water quality within a watershed and to identify the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic sources to that drainage. Natural sources, particularly areas of pyritic hydrothermal alteration, have been found by the Colorado Geological Survey to be a significant source, sometimes the only source, for acidity and/or metals in a number of areas of Colorado (Neubert, 2000). This situation undoubtedly occurs in many places in the Western United States and elsewhere where metallic mineralization occurs. Anthropogenic sources arise from mining and other human activities that increase the exposure of acid-generating materials to weathering processes, thereby increasing acidity and metal loading to drainages where that activity is occurring or has occurred. This project is attempting to determine if these sources can be differentiated through mineralogical analysis, in conjunction with surface water chemistry that controls the precipitated minerals, of the impacted drainages by remote sensing techniques.

"Construction projects involve a great many risks. The risk that material prices will increase during construction or that the work under construction will be destroyed by fire, storm or some other act of God are just a few examples. In tunneling or other underground projects, one of the most significant risks is that the subsurface conditions encountered during construction will differ from what is expected. Each of these risks must be accounted for, managed and, ultimately, the duty of one party or the other to bear. The primary tool used to allocate the risks among the parties is the construction contract.How construction contracts allocate the risk that subsurface conditions will differ have changed substantially over the past century. Today, construction contracts typically allocate the risk through a series of provisions. The first is the differing site condition or changed condition clause. That clause, when included, typically provides that the owner bears the risk that the subsurface conditions will differ from what is indicated in the contract documents or what is reasonably expected. The second clause is one that provides that the contractor must conduct a reasonable site investigation and bear the risk of any conditions that such an investigation would reveal. The third provision includes disclaimers that are often included in geotechnical data provided by the owner (or the owner’s engineer) to the contractor which attempts to limit the information on which the contractor can rely. Because these risk-allocating devices seem to be somewhat conflicting, a brief discussion of each provides critical insight in understanding how the modern construction contract allocates the risk of differing site conditions.At the start of the 20th century, construction contracts looked substantially different than they do today. For example, one contract for the construction of a public water tunnel in Chicago, IL, drafted around 1895 contained the following clause:The contractor must take the work entirely at his own risk. No extra allowance will be made for quicksand, hardpan or boulders."

Quantitative methods are, by now, a standard tool of the mining industry, and are commonly used by Research Departments in their evaluation of production methods and schedules, and their associated costs. Indeed, much sophisticated computer work has been devoted to such evaluation of controllable costs and capital requirements. These data are an important input into the project evaluation formula, which is probably the most important single calculation per formed by a mining company, since the result decides whether a particular project is viable. It is instructive to summarize the broad principles of project evaluation, since they are crucial to the remaining sections of this paper. PROJECT EVALUATION The most widely used method of appraising projects is known as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Two main variants are used; they are known as the 'not present value' (NPV) approach and the 'internal rate of return' (IRR) approach respectively. The difference between the two is that the former takes the firm's interest rate as given and uses this knowledge to calculate the present value of the project; whereas the latter calculates the highest interest rate the project could tolerate and still just breaks even. The technique is more simply discussed in terms of the first method (NPV).

The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

The US Bureau of Mines developed hand-made, steel-fiber-reinforced concrete (SFC) blocks for building mine cribs. To ensure wider usage of these cribs, US Steel Mining Co. initiated a joint development and evaluation program with Burrell Construction Co. to mass produce SFC blocks of reasonable dimension, weight, and cost. Small specimens and full-size cribs were evaluated to determine their compressive strength and post failure characteristics. After testing and adjusting of various concrete mixtures, a final formulation was selected that gave a nominal crib strength of 22 MPa (3200 psi) and a nominal modulus of elasticity of 6.9 GPa (1.0 x 106 psi.) These SFC cribs can support 6.4 times as much as a wood crib with the same load-bearing area. The SFC crib was proven to be an economical and effective roof support system through various underground installations.

The results of the electrokinetic study of the activation of quartz by divalent cations showed that the charge reversal was related to the point at which the cation hydrolyzed. The reversal was not due to the presence of solid hydroxide at the surface of the quartz but due to the charged ions in the solutions. The charge reversal for beryllium at a log molar concentration of 1x10-4 was observed at pH 5 and 9. The quartz was positively charged between a pH reading of 5 to 10. Magnesium at the same log molar concentration did not show a charge reversal from pH 2 to 12. The probable cause of the charge reversal was due to the ionized Be3 (OH)3+3 or Mg (OH)+ . Variations in the electrokinetics of quartz were minimized by heating the sample to 300° C.

The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. In the crushing and grinding of metallics for beneficiation, the sizing is normally done to liberate the metals or sulphides for further processing to improve recoveries of the basic metals or minerals. The objective is to reduce the ore in size through various closely controlled stages to that degree of fineness which gives an economic liberation of valuable mineral, but which avoids as much as possible the production of sliming fractions. A different philosophy applies to the crushing and grinding of Gypsum. Our requirements normally demand controlled grinding and/or crushing of the material not only to a fineness suitable for further processing of the mineral into end products, but to produce various sizes of material which are them- selves saleable products. The majority of our tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for Wallboard. Therefore, our mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off inter- mediate products to meet various Customer requirements. This forces us into compromises at times in our equipment installations, and our equipment must sometimes be more versatile and complex than we would like it to be. We try to process our basic rock, Gypsum, for the most efficient size reduction. We market 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product, which generally is the fineness of material to be used for stucco for Wallboard, and we do this with controlled crushing, grinding and sizing cycles of the material. To summarize, we use a different philosophy of crushing and grinding than the metallic field which uses comminution or crushing and grinding to improve recovery, whereas we choose our equipment to crush and grind primarily for product performance.

Although fluorspar is considered an industrial mineral by usage and value, its geological occurrence and the mining and milling methods employed make it more akin to the non-ferrous metal ores. Likewise methods of exploration for it are more like those used in the search for lead and zinc, with which fluorspar is often mixed. In fact, it often takes the mixture of fluorspar, lead, zinc, plus maybe barite to add up to enough recoverable values to make the mineral an ore by definition. This is so true where the fluorspar portion is low grade, perhaps less than 25 percent. Until the development of modern steel milling in World War I times, the invention of aluminum smelting, and development of the fluorine chemical industry and air conditioning, there were few uses for fluorspar aside from ceramic fluxes in the flint glass industry and for uses as glazes for pottery and china. Pure fluorite crystals have long been admired as semi-precious and ornamental minerals of many delicate colors.

The opportunity to cooperate with the Mining Department of the Pennsylvania State University in their Student-Trainee Program is accepted by The New Jersey Zinc Company who believes that the participation in this type of a program will lead to a larger supply of high calibre engineers in mining. Trainees compete with other employees to earn the cost of their education while gaining practical experience in the mining industry. The practical experience is arranged to complement the technical education through a variety of work assignments. Job opportunities for the trainee are related to the work requirements of the Company and to the performance of the trainee. Management must consider and deal with a good many problems uncommon with regular, full &apos;time employees. For a number of reasons this program is recommended to other companies as a means to encourage outstanding young men who are interested in a career in the mineral industry to obtain a professiona1 education.

"To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is studying CO2 capture using alkali-based solvents. The objective of the present study was to find a way to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into an alkali solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. One approach to increasing absorption rate is to use a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. The surfactant chosen for the study was a neutral-charge polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) with a molecular weight of 200. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations. Results showed that as the concentration of PPGME increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 x 10-3 mol/min CO2 at 0g/L PPGME to 3.92 x 10-3 mol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in the absorption capacity of the solution. IntroductionChemical absorption using an amine solvent is currently the most mature carbon capture and storage technology available. Amines are advantageous in that they have a fast CO2 absorption rate, which leads to a high CO2 removal efficiency. However, amine absorption has some considerable drawbacks, such as high energy requirements, high equipment corrosion rates, amine degradation in the presence of oxygen, high waste generation and a large increase in plant footprint if new equipment is constructed (Herzog and Golomb, 2004; D’Alessandro et al., 2010). Due to these drawbacks, Michigan Technological University (MTU) is studying CO2 absorption using alkali-based solvents, which address the above disadvantages of amine solvents."

The Shebandowan mine and concentrator, with a capacity of 9072 t/week (10,000 st per week), was opened in 1972 after several years of environmental study and planning. The mine is located in a popular vacation cottage .area about 96 km (60 miles) west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Undertaken before environmental assessment procedures had become an established requirement, Shebandowan is one of the first Canadian examples of effectively integrating environmental work into overall planning. Although it is an underground mine, many of the environmental considerations are common to open-pit operations, and hence, it provides a case history for the use of all mine planners. Computers can play a part in such studies by simulating the annual production of mine wastes, by on-line polling of environmental sensors and by processing sensor data. Early attention was focused on establishing base-line conditions in a two-year water quality monitoring program. Since production began, water quality monitoring has shown that mining has not caused any significant changes. However, mine drainage disposal arrangements had to be modified in the light of operating experience. There is no townsite associated with the mine, and workers commute from established municipalities. Harmonious relations have been achieved with local cottage residents after their initial fears were dispelled. Plans are ready to begin revegetating the tailings when a sufficient area of dry elevated tailings has been accumulated. Rehabilitation of the land disturbed during development was begun before start-up and was completed during initial operations.

The major health hazard from exposure to crystalline silica historically has been silicosis. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for over two thousand years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery which increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and dust control measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. X-ray images of the lungs show progressive scarring of the lungs. The symptoms are related to the amount of exposure to crystalline silica and the years of exposure.

The United States has very large coal reserves in seams that are less than 1065 mm (42 in.) thick. These reserves are often not mined because of the difficulty of working in low heights and, in most cases, the seams are beyond the technical or economical limits. It is estimated that the remaining reserves in 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick seams that are not faulted or intruded, dip less than 15° and under a cover of 610 m (2000 ft) or less are nearly 910 Gt (1 trillion st). This is a very large percentage of coal reserves in the United States (Unrug, 1985; DuCarme et al., 1990). The US Bureau of Mines is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm (6 to 42 in.) thick coal seams. Research has focused on existing thin seam mining techniques, testing of small- and full-scale physical models of the Bureau&apos;s slot mining concept and computer modeling of the full-scale process. In 1986, only 21 % of the total US coal production came from -1065 mm (-42 in.) thick seams. Of that, 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick seams share of production was minimal, probably 5% or less (Mayercheck et al., 1990). This shows that the thin seams, particularly the seams 355 to 710 mm (14 to 28 in.) thick, have not been mined to the extent of the available reserves. Thin seam coal, generally, is of premium quality. As thicker seams are depleted, the mining of thin seams could become more important. Thus, there is a need to develop technology to mine these seams (J. Farinelli et al., 1987). A successfully applied technology could change reserve categorization. In the Appalachian Plateau there are 417 Gt (460 billion st) in 355 to 1065 mm (14 to 42 in.) seams. This represents nearly 9.2% of the US remaining reserves (Unrug, 1985). At depths of 152 m (500 ft) or less, the Appalachian Plateau has about 214 Gt (236 billion st) of reserves in 355 to 1065 mm (14 to 42 in.) thick seams. Other mining areas also have substantial coal reserves in this seam thickness category. Those, however, are not as attractive for mining as the Appalachian Plateau. In the past, most of the reserves of the Appalachian Plateau region were partially worked by contour and highwall auger mining. It is estimated that these mining systems had left some 40,230 km (25,000 miles) (Readers Digest, 1987) of unreclaimed highwalls. The Bureau recognized this situation. In FY1987, the agency initiated a research project to develop anew technology for mining thin seams of the Appalachian Plateau.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD &apos;s promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules.
