The need for dimensionally stable filled polymer composites has spurred the quest for materials that possess a negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Finding minerals and materials with a negative CTE large enough to counteract the substantial CTE found in polymers proves challenging. Much research has been per-formed over the last decade to uncover various materials that possess this unusual behavior. A list of materials that have demonstrated negative properties are discussed, as well as the experimental use of one such material (ZrW2O8), in a polymer matrix composite. Many deep well waste disposal. operations have adopted the technology of the petroleum industry but fail to make full use of the knowledge and experience upon which this technology is based. Inexperience in subsurface exploration commonly leads industrial personnel to an over simplified understanding of the complex subsurface rock/fluid environment and overly optimistic "degree of exploration /adequacy of knowledge" ratios. Several fundamental differences between disposal and petroleum production are discussed. In particular, the evolution of understanding of the subsurface in relation to degree of exploration is demonstrated by summarized case histories of such other forms of subsurface fluid exploitation as oil pro¬duction and underground gas storage, tracing subsurface interpretations from the initial exploratory concept to that of fullest development. Evolutionary changes in interpretation and their significance as applied to deep well disposal are stressed.

Salt cavities have been proven to be a suitable structure for underground storage of various matters in gas, liquid or solid form. Since the technique of underground storage was developed mainly through field experiences in solution mining, a wider use of solution cavities for storage of gaseous and solid matters requires evaluation of three basic rock mechanics problems; cavity instability, boundary rock failure and surface subsidence. Cavity instability is due to the non-linear long-term creep properties of the surrounding ground media which are sensitive to cavity pressure changes associated with the storage. The cavity boundary rock failure is caused by the loss of effective confining pressure to the boundary rock media in the process of storage of gaseous and solid matters. Surface subsidence is the final outcome of the stress envelope originated around a cavity, eventually reaching the ground surface. The rock mechanics processes of instability, failure and surface subsidence are explained by using various field examples in salt domes and bedded formations. Methods of solving the problems are discussed including stress relief, stress control and computer optimization of design.

Selectivity and recovery of many industrial minerals can be directly affected by the carbon length, degree of unsaturation, and melt point of fatty acids used as collectors. Examples of several modifications are provided based on actual experiences of commercial applications. A review of recent history indicates that fatty acid collectors are applicable from C9'C18 in carbon length, however, not for all minerals. The mesh size, density, and surface characteristics of the particular mineral, as well as other related operating conditions, are important in selecting the correct fatty acid configuration. A review of some past programs are submitted as a guideline in the selection of fatty acids and supported by isolated, successful examples demonstrating the effect of carbon length and unsaturation.

The peatlands of the U.S. and Canadian parts of the Upper Great Lakes region have a long history of modest utilization in agriculture, forestry, horticulture, and as natural undisturbed areas. Only recently have they been assessed as potential sources of non-renewable or renewable energy. This new interest in peatlands, should current proposals be realized, might mean the commitment of millions of acres to energy production purposes. The magnitude alone of this potential utilization of peatland signals the possibility of substantial environmental disturbance, local resource shortages, resource use conflicts, and social and economic change. Peat- land resource managers in the region are just beginning to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of large-scale peatland utilization. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has made a considerable effort to study peat resource management issues and will shortly make recommendations to the state legislature regarding utilization alternatives. What follows is a general discussion of peatland utilization and management trends in the region with a focus on Minnesota and its peatland management efforts.

Salar basins in the Andean Highlands of Northern Chile contain ground-water resources which could be used to satisfy requirements for the mineral industry in the region. Salars occur in arid zones; average precipitation is about 200 millimeters per year at altitudes of about 4,000 meters, and average annual evaporation is two meters or more. The salar basins are hydrogeologic sinks where water flows from recharge areas at the margins of the basins to discharge areas at the salt encrusted salar at the lowest point of the basin floor. Groundwater circulation occurs principally in the alluvial and fractured bedrock aquifers. Results of pumping tests for exploration and production water wells indicate a range in maximum sustained pumping yield of 62 to 126 liters per second, and where abundantly fractured, ignimbrite comprises the most prolific aquifer. Chemical quality of groundwater is good. Long-term pumping from properly located production wells in the salar basins would result in lowering of groundwater levels and salvage of water in areas where groundwater is lost via evaporation.

The Macmillan Pass tungsten property (MacTung) is the largest known copper-tungsten, calcic, exoskarn deposit in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada, the deposit crops out on Mt. Allen within the Selwyn Mountain Range. It was discovered in 1962 by a subsidiary of AMAX Inc. and has since been explored by 16,300 meters of surface and underground diamond drilling and by 800 meters of underground development. Geologic reserves are in excess of 30 million tons, grading slightly less than 1.0% WO3. Scheelite (CaWO3 ) is the main mineral of economic interest. Accessible by road, the property is not in production. Previously estimated reserves at MacTung have been unable to fully utilize all the geological controls on mineralization. In the past three years, however, an intensive program has been underway to improve our understanding of the deposit and to use the resulting information in a more precise way. This paper will discuss the key aspects of the geology as they specifically relate to reserve estimation and will demonstrate how these controls are being used in a geostatistical model of the deposit.

The Trolleyphone was the first successful application of carrier current techniques to a DC power distribution system to provide voice communication between fixed points and moving locomotives and traveling cranes, This was a significant breakthrough because this not only in itself provided a useful new tool for industry, but the knowledge gained in the transmission of voice communication is paving the way for many other things, chiefly, remote control and indication systems which promise to have a far reaching effect during the upcoming age of automation. Once it has been established that we can communicate between men who operate machines, the next step will be to operate the machines themselves.

The Carlin Gold Mining Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation has been successfully operating an open pit gold mine and cyanide mill for approximately the past ten years. It is a unique operation in that about 20 percent of the mill feed is a carbonaceous ore refractory to cyanidation that must undergo a pretreatment stage developed for, and by, Carlin. The mine and plant are located in the Tuscarora mountain range is north-eastern Nevada near the towns of Carlin and Elko. Claims were staked at the minesite in 1961 and 1962. A drilling program was initiated late in 1962 and after drilling a total of 250,000 feet of rotary drill holes an estimated 9,300,000 tons of ore at a grade of 0.32 ounces of gold per ton was delineated.

Samarium (Sm), one of the rare earth elements (REEs), and cobalt (Co) are used in the production of SmCo permanent magnets, which have excellent temperature stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Of the two types of SmCo magnets, one contains a high amount of iron, approximately 15.2 percent. This paper focuses on the recycling of iron (Fe)-bearing SmCo. In this study, an oxidative leaching process with nitric acid was developed to eliminate iron through in situ hydrolysis and to dissolve REEs and Co. The influence of experimental conditions on the formation of an amorphous iron compound through the hydrolysis of Fe3+ in a nitric acid environment was thoroughly examined based on a Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimal parameters for oxidative leaching were determined to be an acid concentration of 3 mol/L, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/10, and a process temperature of 60 °C.

Introduction In response to industry needs and requests, Joy Mining Machinery is aggressively evolving a "game changing" system of underground development mining machinery. This entry-development system (EDS) project is concentrated on providing clean, protected and ergonomic operator areas and a quantum leap in productivity. To meet these goals, a virtually continuous and automated mining system is needed. Operators must be able to efficiently and ergonomically perform required functions from a protected environment. Health-related issues, such as respirable dust and noise, must also be addressed. A new concept system of integrated face equipment, from the continuous miner to and including advancing the section belt and services, is needed. Phase I of the project was aimed at developing the bolting technology required. Through acquisition of Cram Australia and joint development efforts with Canyon Fuel Co., Joy now has this capability. The test platform, known as the Joy Multibolter, has successfully completed its trials at Canyon Fuel's SUFCo Mine (Fig. 1). These tests validated the bolting technology and operator protection and ergonomic issues. Phase II includes the development and testing of an integrated mining machine (IMM) capable of advancing a heading 1.5 m (5 ft) while simultaneously cutting a fullface width (single pass) and installing a complete bolt pattern. The IMM, unveiled at MINExpo 2000, incorporates the bolting technology of the Multibolter with automated full-face cutting. This machine was designed to meet Joy's stringent health, operator protection and 300m/d (1,000-ft/d) productivity goals. Phases III through V will include development of processes and integrated haulage, ventilation, power, material handling and section services advancing equipment. Processes and equipment developed will be designed for seamless integration into a complete entry development system. The focus of this paper is the new continuous miner (IMM) development, proposed testing and expectations for the EDS. The IMM is scheduled for commissioning and trials beginning in April 2001 at the SUFCo Mine. SUFCo Mine Canyon Fuel Co. is jointly owned by Arch Western Resources and the Itochu Corp. of Japan. It owns and operates three coal mines in Utah: the SUFCo Mine in Sevier County, the Skyline Mine in Carbon and Emery Counties and the Dougout Canyon Mine in Carbon County. Incorporating state-of-the-art-mining technology and advanced mine management practices, the SUFCo Mine is one of the most efficient underground coal mines in the world. The SUFCo Mine is located approximately 50-km (30 miles) northeast of Salina, UT, in the Wasatch Plateau portion of the Uinta coal basin. The mine property consists of 9,900 hm2 (24,470 acres) with approximately 118 Mt (130 million st) of recoverable reserves. Public utilities and industrial concerns purchase approximately 95% of the coal mined at SUFCo through short- or long-term contracts. Coal reserves are extracted by longwall mining, and the panels are developed using continuous miners. The longwall face at SUFCo Mine is 283-m (930-ft) wide, and the seam height ranges from 2.4 to 4 m (8 to 13 ft). The two development sections are in full operation using Joy 12CM12 continuous miners. Two super longwall panels, under development in the northeast portion of the lease block, are 4,270-m (14,000-ft) long with a 283-m (930-ft) wide longwall face. There is no single mining problem at Benson that does not exist at some other mine. There are four, however, that require special attention primarily because they occur together and have an influence on each other. These are the nature of the mineral occurrence, the shape of the ore body, the operating schedule, and the climate. It is the purpose of this paper to describe mining practices in relation to these four factors. Iron ore was first noticed in the Star Lake area early in the nineteenth century. Prior to Jones and Laughlin leasing the facilities built by the Defence Plant Corporation, several companies tried to mine the ore body but gave it up as uneconomical. While there is a little high grade (40%) magnetite, most of the ore contains 20 to 25% iron and not enough was known prior to World War II to design a profitable operation. By 1943, and certainly in the years that followed, technological developments in ore dressing and mining not only put the magnetite into the category of a commercial ore, but made possible the concentration of the non-magnetic iron mineral, martite. This last development nearly doubled the ore reserve. Jones and Laughlin bought the DPC holdings in 1946 and has since expanded the plant to its present capacity of 4,400 gross tons of concentrates daily or 1,600,000 gross tons per year. Magnetite makes up 62% of this production at the present time, but it will be necessary before long to bring martite production up to about 45% of the total because of the ratio of the two ores in the reserves. To keep the plant supplied, 14,000 to 15,000 tons must be mined and crushed daily, with a ratio of concentration that varies from 2.8 to 3.4. The ore body is 12,000 feet long and varies in width from 600 to 1,500 feet. The waste rock is, for the most part, a granite gneiss, and the overburden, of which little is left, is a glacial drift sand. For the entire reserve, there is a half ton of rock for every ton of concentrate, but the stripping ratio is more than one to one at present because of the existence of more rock in the upper mining levels in relation to the ore. The dirt stripping or development work that cannot be handled by company facilities is contracted to an outside firm. The need for this diminishes every year and will soon disappear. The deposit looks like a "J" in plan, with the long leg running approximately north and south and the short leg to the west. The primary crushing plant, consisting of a 54" gyratory followed by two 18" gyratories and a 1,500 foot conveyor belt to the fine crushers, is located on the third level where the long and short leg of the mine meet. The widest part of the pit lies just the north of the crusher. The mine is operated on a lease that expires in 199l0 There are two fee owners, the Benson Iron Company, which owns slightly overhlf of the reserves, and the Newton Falls Paper Company, which owns the balance. There is no appreciable difference in the mining on the two fees, so the ore is removed in strict proportion to calculated reserves during each year. Basic mining equipment consists of eight 45 yard electric shovels, a fleet of twenty-five 22 ton end dump trucks, eleven churn drills for nine inch blast holes, and two small percussion drills for four to five inch holes, There are the normal auxiliary items, such as dozers, graders, wagon drills, and two drop-ball cranes. Power is purchased and, where practical, is used at 4100 volts. Pit drainage pumps can handle a maximum of 11,500 GPM from the several sumps, but water is a problem only during the spring or when a sudden thaw follows a heavy snowfall.

The early beginnings of mining geophysics in Sweden can be traced back to the reign of queen Kristina in the 17th century. The mine compass, consisting of a freely suspended magnetic needle in a casing, was in use certainly by 1640 and probably earlier for locating iron ore deposits. Whether the mine compass was a Swedish invention or not is an unsettled question since the possibility cannot be overlooked that the celebrated Nürnberg compass-makers of the 16th century may have constructed it for the first time(1). Be that as it may, the mine compass was very extensively employed in Sweden for more than two centuries and met with spectacular success in locating magnetic deposits under shallow overburden. Occasionally the diligent prospector would even be rewarded with a pyrrhotitebearing sulphide deposit, as witness many old sulphide-ore pits and some mines still in operation from the 17th and the 18th centuries. The mine compass measured only the orientation of the Earth's magnetic field and not its strength. Although it was improved in construction and sensitivity over the ages, no great strides were made in magnetic prospecting after the initial discovery of the use of the compass until Gauss, omnipresent in 19th century physics and mathematics, showed with the assistance of Weber how the strength of a magnetic field could be determined.

The mining sector, which is important in terms of raw-material and energy supply, is seen as a sector with high number of fatal accidents compared to other sectors. In this century of heightened occupational health and safety awareness, it is important to review past accident statistics and analyze current deficiencies using the information in inventory. Although there are many studies assessing occupational accidents occurring in the mining sector, there are few studies using the nonparametric linear programming method. There are many input and output parameters related to occupational health and safety. Nonparametric linear programming method has been found to be useful because it provides simultaneous evaluation of these input-output parameters, does not require functional form in the analyses and provides guidance on the improvement needed by the related parameter. However, this method analyzes data using a single period of time and does not take into account any changes in efficiency over time. In the literature, there is no study in which the change of occupational accidents occurring in mining and even other sectors over time is examined and the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) is used. Within the scope of the present study, the aim was to examine the change of occupational accidents occurring in Western Lignite Corp. in Turkey, where underground and surface production methods are applied, between 2005 and 2018. It is the first time MPI is used to examine the change of occupational accidents over time. The DEAP 2.1 computer program written by Coelli [1] was used in the solution of the models [2].

Kaolin clay from Late Permian sequences has been considered a potential resource for niobium (Nb) due to high concentrations reported at several hundred micrograms per gram and large areal distribution. A previous case study identified titanium (Ti)-bearing minerals associated with kaolin clay as the main host phases for niobium. Correlation between the Nb and Ti concentrations was poor, however, and the types of Ti-bearing minerals and modes of Nb occurrence were unclear. To investigate this, typical kaolin clay samples from Late Permian sequences in southwest China were characterized, and final products derived from them were investigated using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results revealed three types of titanium dioxide (TiO2) mineral phases in the clay samples: (1) massive TiO2 minerals, (2) aggregates of nano TiO2 minerals and (3) granular TiO2 minerals. The first two did not contain niobium. From the EDS analysis, the granular TiO2 minerals, including anatase and rutile, were the source of Nb in the kaolin clay samples.

One responsibility of a manager is to improve his human organization. Some executives believe a manager should be measured and compensated accordingly on the basis of his ability to improve the quality of his human organization. Officials in the coal mining industry have had a tough road to travel in this regard due to fluctuating coal production demands, contractual obligations, and improved mining equipment and methods. The time may have finally arrived when we are able to recruit, select, and develop men from the labor market to fill vacancies, This is particularly true of our maintenance organizations. Because of the importance of this responsible function and the types of skills required, we must develop an extensive improvement pro- gram. Anyone in the industry who fails to undertake a manpower audit and who accepts a philosophy which will not permit collective planning, organizing and con- trolling the improvement of the human element throughout his maintenance organization may certainly cause deterioration within his company.

Thionocarbamate flotation reagents have enjoyed a niche position in the recovery of copper sulfides and activated sphalerites since their introduction in the mid 1950's (Harris, 1954). Thionocarbamates containing an allyl group (-CH2- CH=CH2), introduced recently Lewellyn, 1985; Nagaraj, 1988; Avotins, 1991), are used commercially as collectors for copper sulfides and activated sphalerite. Laboratory flotation tests and plant usage have demonstrated that allyl-containing thionocarbamate collectors exhibit certain unique properties that distinguish them from the corresponding dialkyl thionocarbamates. Spectroscopic (FTIR, XPS) and wettability studies of N-allyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (AIBTC) and its saturated analog N-propyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (NPIBTC) adsorbed on copper at pH 9 were performed in order to investigate whether there were any fundamental reasons for these differences. Flotation tests were carried out on chalcocite, copper ore and an activated sphalerite.

Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units are currently in operation on magnetite, varying in size from 16 ft diameter circular unit to a 25 ft by 100 ft rectangular unit. Additional units up to 38 ft diameter are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading-varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to economically remove as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. These figures pertaining only to transportation may be thought-provoking. If a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could reduce the silica content of their concentrate by 17, a savings in boat freight alone would amount to 100,000 tons at $2.00 per ton annually.

The abstract discusses the importance of reliable mine monitoring systems for preventing accidents. It focuses on diagnosing ventilation system failures caused by roadway faults that alter airflow resistance. The paper proposes using an improved Support Vector Machine (SVM) method to identify the fault location based on changes in air volume detected by wind speed sensors. The approach involves building a sensitivity 0-1 matrix and establishing a roadway fault scope library. The improved SVM method is tested on the Daming coal mine, demonstrating its effectiveness in diagnosing fault locations, reducing training time, and improving accuracy compared to traditional SVM.

Wollastonite is a little known industrial mineral of the silicate group. The largest and purest known deposit in the free world is being mined and beneficiated in Millsboro, New York by NYCO, A Division of Processed Minerals Incorporated. The associated garnet and diopside are separated from the wollastonite using dry high intensity magnetic separators. Beneficiated wollastonite is used extensively as an additive and filler in the ceramic, paint, refractory, and wallboard industries. Wollastonite acts as a functional filler due to its unique chemistry and physical acicularity.
