This is also true for potash, gypsum and trona mines where coal mine type equipment and methods are used. This paper covers a large section of actual western mining practice with no theoretical calculations or predictions.

For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? As can be guessed from the subtitle, this paper will not be a geologist's one since neither of the authors is a professional geologist. This will be an attempt to present the various aspects of the legal, economic and geological setting that condition the exploration for mineral resources in Haiti. Before going any further, we are going to present a summary of our rather short mining history. One must first mention that Caribbean countries are latecomers to the mining business. If we go back to the colonial period (1500-1600's) there are net many traces of mining activity. The major exception to this is the recovery of alluvial gold in Hispaniola, Puerto-Rico and Cuba and also some sporadic copper mining in Hispaniola (notably in Haiti near the city of Gonaives and in some of the old mining districts in Santo-Domingo). These easily minable deposits were quickly exhausted and mining quite naturally came to an end as agriculture rose as the major economic activity. In the Haitian case, aside from very erratic mention during the 19th Century of the presence of some minerals (i.e. haematite, chalcopyrite) no serious geological work was undertaken. In the meantime, the peasants in the northern part were still looking for alluvial gold in some streams but this amounted to next to nothing. One has to come to the 1920's to find the first comprehensive geological survey. At the time, the country was under the military control of the United States. The American Government sent a team from the U.S.G.S. headed by the late W. Woodring to initiate a survey of the country. Given the lack of transportation, this was a tough task and Woodring and his associates did it magnificently. As a result of their efforts, they published a very thick piece of work of more than 600 pages. "The Geology of the Republic of Haiti" although it was published in 1924 is a classic and is a must for anyone interested in the geology of Haiti.

The pandemic emergency is forcing transit agencies to define strategies allowing social distancing, which are more challenging in underground interchange stations in crowded downtown cores. Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Yonge Station Capacity Improvement Project in Toronto was approved to meet increasing demand and represents an opportunity to fight COVID-19. This paper discusses cost-effective solutions in expanding the cut-and-cover station box over the existing Toronto Subway Line 2 and connecting it through ventilation openings in the cast-iron tunnel liner. Potential uplift risks and structural damage due to minimal vertical clearance were analyzed via three-dimensional finite element analyses with advanced constitutive laws to simulate the multi-stage construction process. Based on the simulation results, a series of countermeasures, including excavation support systems, king posts, ground-consolidations, and liner reinforcements were integrated into comprehensive design options to ensure the serviceability and structural integrity of the subway tunnels.

The White Pine orebody is characterized by a high lateral stress or highly faulted and joined conditions. Because of these difficult conditions roof support has always been a main concern. Mechanical bolts were widely used in the early seventies; however, it became apparent that major improvements in ground control were required if safe operation at White Pine was to be continued. The first step was taken in 1973-1974 with the testing of resin bolting. Record of caves and roof-falls with either type of support demonstrated superiority of resin bolting versus mechanical bolting - Safety was dramatically improved which was the absolute first consideration; however resin bolting was still more expensive than mechanical bolting. In order to generalize resin bolt installation, the second step was therefore to acquire special roof bolters compatible with resin bolting. The machine was to enhance the safety of the operation. This was achieved by the acquisition of the Secoma bolting machine equipped with an automatic bolting turret. Being a "hands off" operation the safety of the operator is total. Using a fixed taped attachment of the drill steel on the chuck a front guide and an automatic regulator torque thrust on the steel drilling in small diameter was possible. Being a fully automatic process only one operator is required per machine versus two operators with the conventional machines. The two main objectives were reached enabling the extension of resin bolting to the whole mine.

A project's rates of return (RORs)1, be it the internal rates return (IRRs) or one of the many IRR surrogates, frequently needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency an ROR- approximation procedure depend on the quality the approximation-initiating parameters, such as bounds or seed values (guesses). The existing approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses suggested by intuition rather than supported by mathematical considerations. This paper presents three mathematically founded ROR-bounding and eleven ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability by using examples of typical project cash-flowpatterns (CFPs). The calculated bounds and guesses not only improve the approximation efficiency, but also allow the process of the ROR discovery to be automated, thereby making it more convenient and reliable.

Hydrometallurgical processes for copper flotation concentrates avoid the S02 emission problems associated with smelting, but they require oxidation of copper to obtain solubilization during leaching. The resulting copper ions must be reduced to metal, which normally requires large amounts of energy or energy equivalent reagents such as hydrogen or iron. The conventional reduction method is electrowinning which is labor intensive and involves 35 to 40% of both the en-tire operating and capital cost of the better hydrometallurgical processes. Smeltermen are correct in criticizing the available hydrometallurgical processes for being more energy intensive than modern smelting processes. Clearly, there is considerable incentive to reduce the cost and energy required for reducing copper ions from solution. Furthermore, it is thermodynamically possible to do this using sulfur contained in the concentrate itself. In fact, the thermodynamic potential of oxidizing sulfur from S+4 to the S+6 state is greater than required to reduce cupric ion to metallic copper. (1) Realization of this potential in a practical process would significantly reduce the cost of hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide concentrates because sulfur would become a cost-free reducing agent. An apparently practical method is to use SO3 and HSO3 ions, obtained by ammonia scrubbing of SO2 from a concentrate roaster gas, to reduce leached copper to metal in an autoclave. This reduction step is the Jumau 1907 patent. (2) A series of steps including sulfite reduction constituting a crude flowsheet was suggested by Parker in 1976(3), but apparently little development work has been done by him, since he has been interested in new routes of refining the resulting copper powder. The purposes of the present paper are to elaborate on the Jumau-Parker thrust. Describe a detailed complete sulfite process flowsheet based on materials and energy balances, discuss the chemistry, and discuss further work that is required to develop this process. The results of the present paper are largely based on a synthesis of the steps using handbook chemistry. Process materials, utilities costs, and energy requirements are projected to be unusually low.

This report summarizes the results of preliminary investigations concerning the influence of block caving mining upon adjacent mine openings and discusses possible methods for reducing critical rock pressures and damage to these openings. These investigations are one part of a general study of the rock mechanics of block caving by the Denver Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this part of the study Is to obtain an estimate of the stress concentrations around mine openings adjacent to block caving stopes for use in developing better designed openings and improving mining methods. When mine openings such as slusher drifts, grizzly drifts, and haulage drifts are damaged by rock pressures induced by block caving mining, the mining cost increases, mine production decreases, and ore recovery may be consider- ably lessened. Methods of mining that result in lower rock pressures and methods of design that enable mine openings to withstand these pressures are desirable. The development of these methods, in turn, requires a fuller understanding of the following: The stres concentrations around the mine openings and the changes in stress induced by adjacent mining; the physical properties, such as the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the rock surrounding the openings; and the support supplied by the concrete lining, timber sets, or other types of supports used in the openings.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

Leaching studies of low-grade manganese ore containing 31.77% Mn and 23.71 % Fe from Nishikhal, India, were carried out using pyritiferous lignite as a reductant in sulfuric acid medium. The variables studied were quantity of lignite, sulfuric acid concentration and temperature. Regression equations for the extraction of manganese and potassium were determined from 23 full factorial design data. The experimental conditions for the extraction of manganese were optimized using the steepest-ascent method. It was found that 99.03% of the manganese could be extracted in three hours with an ore to lignite ratio of 1:1.8, a sulfuric acid concentration of 1.9 M and a temperature of 99°C. Money... not many subjects are as personal or as emotional. Hessiod said it well in 700 B.C. "Money is life to us wretched mortals". Are you getting paid enough? Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

As the flaws in the population balance model (PBM) comminution model are examined more deeply, further errors and problems were discovered. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations was used to solve the dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The fact that the PBM model equation Inverse Problem is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Multiple solutions to the same PBM equations are provided. It is shown that there is no unique solution to the Inverse Problem unless additional constraints are provided or assumptions are made such as the Arbiter-Bhrany normalization assumption. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution to a dynamic PBM, while giving the same prediction for a given grinding time interval, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. Actual experimental grinding data was assessed to determine the functionality of mill selection and breakage functions.

The Occidental Oil Shale mining and retorting system for the production of shale oil has many advantages over the conventional underground mine and surface retort systems. For example only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported to the outside, where it blends with the existing shale talus found on most of the slopes in the immediate area. The retorted spent shale is retained underground so that it does not become a surface disposal problem. The process consumes only minor amounts of water which is produced in adequate amounts in the retorting to fulfill all mining operations needs without outside supplies. Noise and dust levels are kept to a minimum with most of the facilities located underground. The exception being the generating stations and facilities as required to monitor air and water qualities, and last but not least, more than four times as much oil is pro¬duced from a given acre than from conventional surface processing. With the increased thicknesses as available on the government monopoly area this number could be increased by a substantial amount.

Dump truck tires are often used in long-haul roads in rugged terrain, with high rolling and grade resistances. These conditions increase the ton-kilometer-per-hour (tkm/hr) or short-ton-mile-per-hour (stmph)rating of tires, leading to tread wear, cuts and complete failures. The load-bearing capacities of these tires are sometimes exceeded, with truck overloading, overstressing, heating and subsequent failures. In addition, truck tire demand far exceeds the current supply capacity, with long lead ordering time. This condition has caused severe tire shortage, and the problem is expected to be sustained in the long-term. Industry has taken extensive practical measures to prolong tire service life with significant results. However, this problem can be solved through fundamental and applied research initiatives. This paper pioneers a research effort in tire service life using multibody physics, fatigue failure modes and soil failure dynamics to develop tire-road contact force dynamics. A virtual prototype simulator of the tire-road contact, using the CAT 775E (with standard tire 24.00R35) was developed and simulated within the MSC.ADAMS/NASTRAN environments. The results show the areas of the loaded tires with maximum Von Mises, principal and shear stresses, which could result in fatigue failure, tire wear and tear and blowouts. The maximum Von Mises stresses on the six truck tires are between 35 and 58 MPa. The maximum shear stresses are also between 19 and 33 MPa. These stresses will cause early tire failures given an average operating schedule of between 20 and 24 hours per day. The isolated areas with maximum stresses will be subjected to further studies to reduce stress intensity while preserving tire performance.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

Minnesota contains a major copper-nickel resource. In anticipation of requests by industry to develop this resource, the Minnesota Department Of Natural Resources has developed a computerized resource inventory and analysis system, MINESITE This extensive database is available to regulatory agencies as they evaluate mining proposals as required by law. The Resource Analysis phase of the project allows state mining policy decisions to be evaluated in terms of long-range effects on Minnesota's mining industry and environmental and land use impacts. The analysis also allows for comparison of proposed mine facility sites to a representative range of sites in terms of engineering, site characteristics, and land use and environmental impacts.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. The MPASS System is a menu-driven user oriented system of interactive computer programs, which form five major subsystems. The subsystems: 1. Simulation 2. Time Study 3. Mine Background Reports 4. The induced polarization (IP) method of geophysical exploration is capable of detecting even small amounts of metallic luster minerals in a rock mass. Consequently, in the years since discovery, IP surveying has become the most popular ground geophysical survey method. It is not too difficult to understand many applications of IP surveying as used in the search for mineral deposits. However, the basic theory of the IP phenomenon is not well developed or understood, and there has been some disagreement on fundamental concepts. In order to most effectively apply the IP method in the field it is necessary to know the physical characteristics of the sought-for deposit including its size, shape, depth, and electrical properties. With this information an optimum IP search arrangement can be devised and one could use the best possible electrode interval, type of array, and line spacing. With uncertain target characteristics as encountered in the real world, geological guidance must be used to help direct an optimized IP survey.

An open pit mining equipment maintenance program, in order to be successful, must have many active segments covering the full range of equipment selection, trained personnel, repair facilities, preventive maintenance programs, warehousing, interdepartmental cooperation, paperwork and effective communications. The mine maintenance program is required to protect company assets Which are units of equipment generating revenue. The program should result in reduced unscheduled equipment downtime, increased equipment productivity rates, and decreased unit operating costs. Current maintenance problems; maintenance effectiveness and future projections on equipment maintenance are discussed. Equipment maintenance is big business and the maintenance department is a full-time partner in the mining venture.
