The modern flotation machine is the result of decades of adaptation to a changing environment. In response to falling ore grades, and rising demands, tonnages, and costs, attempts are now underway to expand machine capacity by about an order of magnitude, while at the same time maintaining metallurgical performance and if possible reducing power requirements per unit throughput. Empiricism and rule-of-thumb have guided flotation machine design and scale-up, and a current need is for the development of a fundamental understanding of the subject. Design features of current and some obsolete machines are discussed in an attempt to outline those principles of flotation machine design which are known, and to delineate topics needing investigation. Attempts are made to distinguish between essential machine features required by the physics of the process, those features resulting from speculative theories on the flotation mechanisms, and features which are essentially styling variations. Topics discussed include: flotation mechanisms; tank and impeller/ stator design and dimensions; impeller speed; aeration; power consumption; particle suspension and dispersion; capacity; correlation of design parameters and operating variables; scale-up and scale- down; materials flow; problems in machine design. Design details and operating data for several current machine families are provided in Appendices.

One of the rare consensual points among different resource-based economic analytical approaches refers to the strategic role of rent from mineral extraction, as a decisive tool to ensure that the temporary wealth generated in the present can turn into permanent income in the future. For this reason, evaluation, distribution and use of mining rent plays a central role in the sustainable development of mining cities. Brazilian legislation provides for this at the municipal level by means of participation in the financial results of mineral extraction accomplished in these municipalities, with the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM). CFEM is a type of ad valorem royalty, which charges taxes of up to 3% of the net revenue of mineral production. However, legislation does not establish how these resources should be used. Therefore, there is wide variation in the use of CFEM income among Brazilian mining cities. A study from a sample of the 15 largest mining cities in eight Brazilian states made possible identification of two main patterns with regards to the use of CFEM which were labeled "sustained use" and " the pitfall of the single treasury." In that regard, this article discusses the pressuring factors that contribute to these patterns, as well as the institutional arrangements which may be more favorable to inducing more sustained use of CFEM.

INTRODUCTION The extraction of gold and silver from ores, concentrates, and various metallurgical products can be achieved by a number of hydrometallurgical techniques. The solvation properties of alkali cyanide solutions on gold and silver were recognized 200 years ago. A cyanidation process for leaching gold from its ore was patented in 1887 and 1889 by MacArthur and Forrest. The solvent action of thiosulfate on gold and silver was observed over 100 years ago. Recently, several patents have been issued for processes using ammonium thiosulfate as lixiviant for precious metals, Berezowsky, et. al (1978) and Kerley (1981). Tozawa and and coworkers also examined the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal thiosulfate solution. Thiourea leaching of gold and silver initially discussed by Plaksin and Kozhukhova in 1941 but has received only limited attention since that early work. Use of thiourea as an alternative to cyanide was the topic of several papers presented at the 1981 AIME annual meeting In Chicago, Illinois. Hiskey provided a review of the fundamental chemistry of the dissolution of gold and silver in acidic thiourea solutions. Pyper and Hendrix reported on the leaching of a finely disseminated gold ore using thiourea as a lixiviant. The review article(6) previously presented was fairly comprehensive covering Important contributions to the chemistry of thiourea and the processing of gold and silver with acidic thiourea solutions. A search of the technical literature was made to determine recent (since 1981) progress and developments in applying thiourea to the processing of gold and silver. This review reveals that Soviet and Eastern European scientists are continuing to make major contributions to our understanding of thiourea/precious metal systems.

For decades many of us who are associated with the mineral industry have tried to show the public its economic and strategic importance. Some of the mineral industry's proponents have been politically powerful figures and have been widely quoted. Yet, as measured by public opinion, legislative support, or almost any other standard, our efforts have been inadequate. It is apparent that a set of environmental beliefs that discredit industry, firmly held by a number of idealistic persons, has had wider coverage in the media and in schools than has the mineral industry's message. Although the fervor of our idealistic friends is often unfounded and, their stands unscientific, they must be considered seriously. Unless we address the issues in terms the idealists will understand, the mineral industry will have little influence on them or on the general public. A. striking thing is that, quite often, translation of idealists' views into action has been counterproductive. The reason is obvious. Excessive amounts of money and energy have been spent on relatively minor problems. The common result is that larger problems have been created. It may be possible to help anti-industry idealists understand their own dependence on minerals, and thus render their views more realistic, if they are shown more effective ways to reach their stated goals. If those goals can be shown to be held in common by all sensitive human beings -- including those in business and industry - the dialogue becomes one of how to achieve common ends. Individual mining companies acting by themselves have little possibility of success, and companies working in unison through trade associations have not been successful. Further, it is unlikely that industry in general can be successful in changing minds unless it seeks outside help. But friends among those who influence public opinion have been hard to find. Historically, help from media has proven difficult to get. Nor has enough help from educators been forthcoming. Yet, a war is going on in the technological, philosophical, and political trenches, even though much of the public is not aware of it. For the first time in years, there is row a significant and growing number of eloquent and brilliant thinkers on the side of free enterprise and industry, many of them environmentalists, but without the anti-industry mind-set. They have had remarkably little help from the private sector or even from the present administration. Industry may do far more for itself in the long run by encouraging these brave but bruised individuals and their organizations than by trying to work alone. These friends of free enterprise are working against a seemingly stacked deck relative to much of the media, the bureaucracy, and the educational system. However, despite their problems, their success to date has been remarkable. With more cooperation from industry they should do even better.

Thank you, Don Gentry, for your generous introduction. It is not adequate simply to say that I appreciate very much the vote of the Award Committee putting forth my name as the winner of the 1992 Daniel C. Jackling Award. To look at the list of previous Jackling Award winners is a humbling experience. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration has been blessed with some exceptional members over the years, and I feel privileged indeed to be included among the Jackling Award winners. During the years of my education at Penn State, my field of specialization was mining engineering, with particular emphasis in my master's and Ph.D. work on rock mechanics. But my career has not been quite so tightly focused as that. I have been involved with coal mining in all its variety - its technical aspects, both theory and practice; and its business side, dealing with management and labor, accountants and lawyers, politicians and environmentalists. And I have also been involved with related fields - construction; exploration; barges, railroads, ships and docks; supply houses; the coke business; you name it. Coming from that practical background, I believe it is most appropriate that I talk with you today about some practical matters. But I will not advise you today how to mine coal or protect roof in a hard-rock mine. You fellows know how to do that. The practical matters that I have in mind relate to policy - national policy. I will acknowledge immediately that national policy is often much less than practical, but bear with me as we explore the subject together. I am reminded of a supervisor I had early in my career. He very strongly advised me, back in 1961, to "get involved in the political process," for without objectivity injected into our national policy making, we will become a second-rate economic power. I have selected as the subject of my remarks today, "Coal and the de facto National Energy Policy." There is an energy policy relating to coal, a de facto one, and it's the one we see as a result of regulation, attitudes and culture from our nation's capital. This de facto policy is the one we in the coal business live with every business day. My thesis is very simple - Coal is, in fact, a vital part of our national energy policy and will remain so, as a practical matter, no matter what politicians may do to us, or not do to us. Coal will prevail - that will be the happy ending to my story in which, of course, we are the good guys in the black hard hats. But first, I must flesh out the plot with some other characters and with some threatening activities. There are five main characters in my story: in order of appearance - Perpetual Politics, Rampant Regulation, Selective Science, Electrification and Confident Coal. The time: the present. Perpetual Politics is always a threat to coal. When you cross the Capital Beltway into Washington, D.C., check your wallet and your gold fillings, because you're not likely to run into any friends. INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. COAL CHARACARISTICS AND PREPREPARATION REQUIREMENTS Preparation and Market Specifications The national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1977 require that when coal is burned, the environmental degradation should be a minimum. For this reason, even coal containing low ash and sulfur must be used in compliance with the NAAQS. The most important pollutants resulting from the combustion of coal are ash, SO2, and NOx gases, and the particulate matter escaping with the combustion gases. The ash is the residue left after complete combustion of coal. It results from the inorganic mineral matter existing in the coal before it is burned. The SO2 results from the combustion of inorganic and organic sulfur associated with the coal. The inorganic sulfur may occur as pyrite, marcasite, or as sulfate sulfur of mostly iron and calcium. The authorities disagree in the definition of organic sulfur in the coal. However, according to ASTM Standard D2492-77,1 the organic sulfur is that sulfur occurring in the coal after subtracting the sum of pyrite and sulfatic sulfurs from the total sulfur in the coal. The NOx gases are produced from high temperature oxidation of nitrogen in the coal that is released into the atmosphere. The particulate matter may consist of fly ash and unburned coal. Selective Mining The cleaning of coal from included ash and sulfur-bearing materials should start at the working faces of surface or underground mines. This can be done by (1) mining only those seams which meet certain quality standards, (2) not mining sections of the seams which may cause deterioration in overall quality of the mined coal, and (3) using a mining method that allows selective mining of coal areas or horizons either underground or on the surface. Since these steps improve the coal quality before the coal reaches the preparation plant, they can be considered to constitute precleaning of coal. During the exploration and development stage of a mine, core and channel samples taken from the coal seam are used to determine (1) petrographic analysis and physical properties,2 (2) character of roof and floor of the seam, 3,4 (3) character and quality of impurities,5 (4) proximate and ultimate analysis, and (5) washability characteristics. However, all of these parameters are subject to considerable variation even within the same seam during the advance of the coal face. This creates a problem in meeting the market demand for coal quality if the coal is to be shipped directly from the mine. If the mining operation is large enough, special blending silos or mechanical blending systems may have to be used to provide uniform quality to the market. There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. In tunneling through water-bearing formations, the expense of controlling the water can have a major impact on overall project cost. The author has seen the cost of an eight-foot, finished sewer tunnel rise from under $500 per foot to over $1,000 when a water problem, anticipated as modest, became severe. There is need for greater professionalism in the approach to groundwater control. The days of the forked stick should be behind us. The basic technology exists. Its application is not yet widespread. This paper discusses predrainage; that is, the lowering of water in advance of tunnel excavation. Both free air and compressed air tunnels are considered. Examples from recent tunnel projects are described. SPECIAL NATURE OF TUNNEL DEWATERING Tunneling is unlike other excavations below the water table in a number of significant ways. The tunnel excavation is always on the critical path; if production slows or stops, there is no other work for the heading crews, no other work to carry the cost of service crews and job overhead. Personnel from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health integrated the results of studies from a seismic tomographic survey, a finite-difference analysis, laboratory measurements of compression wave (ultrasonic) velocities in rock cores, and site geology to evaluate the use of seismic tomography for identifying induced pressures in an underground pillar at the Edgar Mine, Idaho Springs, CO. The key findings were that (1) the seismic tomograms showed that seismic velocities in rock adjacent to mine openings were low, (2) a difference tomogram in which in situ stresses on the east and west sides of the slot were compared showed that velocities increased west of the slot but decreased east of the slot, (3) geologic features (rock types and a fault) identified through geologic mapping were recognizable in the seismic tomograms, (4) ultrasonic velocity measurements on the rock cores agreed with seismic velocity measurements in the tomograms, and (5) results from a finite-difference analysis compared well to the seismic tomograms west of the slot but not east of the slot. The significance of this research is that seismic tomography is a useful tool for determining relative stress in underground pillars.

The Separation Rapids property, located approximately 60 km (37 miles) north of Kenora, Ontario, Canada, is host to one of the largest rare metal pegmatite deposits in the world. This pegmatite was named the Big Whopper by its discoverer, Dr. Fred Breaks of the Ontario Geological Survey, because of the exceptional length and width of the surface exposure. The property is readily accessible from a main, all-weather road via a network of secondary logging roads. The main line of the Canadian National Railway passes through the village of Redditt, just 40 km (24 miles) south of the property. The Big Whopper is one of the complex-type (petalite sub-type) class of rare metal pegmatites that are geochemically the most highly evolved in the spectrum of granitic pegmatites. Such deposits are economically important as resources for the rare metals lithium, tantalum, cesium, and rubidium. While complex-type pegmatites are found in many areas of the world, most are too small to be profitably mined, however, with an inferred resource in excess of 15 million metric tons (mt) (17 million short tons [st]), the Big Whopper is only the fourth deposit of its type in the world with the size required to be of major economic importance. The other three deposits, which are currently in production, are the Tanco mine in Manitoba, the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe, and the Greenbushes mine in Western Australia. The Big Whopper is situated in the eastern continuation of the Archean Bird River greenstone belt which also hosts the Tanco pegmatite, approximately 60 km (37 miles) to the west. The principal commodities identified in the portions of the Big Whopper pegmatite explored to date are petalite (LiAlSi4010) and rubidium-rich K-feldspar. These are industrial minerals with important applications in the glass and ceramics industries. The Big Whopper also contains substantial quantities of lepidolite, a lithium, rubidium-mica which is the principal ore mineral for rubidium metal. Tantalum and cesium occur in anomalous levels with the petalite mineralization, and the possibility of finding zones of high enrichment in these valuable high-tech metals elsewhere in the deposit is excellent. Such enriched zones are typical of pegmatites as highly evolved as the Big Whopper. To date, the geological mapping and diamond drilling work completed by Avalon have delineated the Big Whopper pegmatite system over a strike length exceeding 1.5 km (0.9 miles), over widths ranging from 10 m to 80 m (30 feet to 260 feet) in thickness, and to a vertical depth of close to 300 m (1,000 feet), where it remains open. The pegmatite system consists of a vertically oriented massive petalite pegmatite dyke striking 280 degrees that is flanked by amphibolites containing a swarm of narrower albite and petalite dykes which have all undergone intense deformation in a high strain zone resulting in folding and intense shearing. The Big Whopper exhibits a mineralogical zonation pattern which is complicated by the superimposed deformation that has both folded and stretched the deposit. Drilling has defined a dilute geological resource totaling 7.1 million mt (7.8 million st) grading 1.283 percent Li20, 0.346 percent Rb20, and .007 percent Ta205 over a strike length of 600 m (2,000 feet), and to a vertical depth of 250 m (820 feet), where it remains open. The petalite and rubidium-rich-K-feldspars contained in the Big Whopper all appear to be of superior quality. The grades are consistent with a petalite content averaging 25-30 percent and a rubidium-rich-K feldspar content averaging 15-20 percent. The remainder of the rock consists mainly of albite, several types of mica, and quartz. Accessory minerals include columbitetantalite, cassiterite, apatite, garnet, and gahnite. Market studies show that the deposit is located close enough to existing transportation infrastructure to access rapidly growing, major markets in the glass and ceramics industries, both in the northeastern U.S. and Europe. There are only three competing lithium minerals producers in the world with the Bikita mine in Zimbabwe being the only major producer of petalite. The other lithium deposits produce spodumene, a less desirable lithium mineral. Lakefield Research Limited has successfully designed a process to produce an ultra-pure petalite concentrate containing up to 4.65 percent lithium oxide, and as little as 0.014 percent iron oxide, low levels of soda and potash, and negligible amounts of other trace elements. With these specifications, Avalon will have an excellent quality product for glass-ceramics applications such as Corningware®, CERAN® stove tops, and other thermal shock-resistant products. Lakefield is presently designing the balance of the flowsheet to produce separate concentrates of rubidium-rich K-feldspar, albite, mica, tantalum, tin, and high-purity quartz. Initial test work indicates that the feldspar products will be of exceptional quality. The K-feldspar concentrates contain 11-12 percent K20 and 1 percent Rb20, while the sodaspar contains over 10 percent Na20, and both have very low iron (0.01 percent Fe203). A preliminary economic model shows that with an initial production rate of 90,000 mt (100,000 st) per year, expanding to 170,000 mt (190,000 st) per year over 5 years, the project is capable of generating over CDN $10 million per year in pre-tax cash flow by year 5 on a capital cost of approximately CDN $30 million.

Fluid flow phenomena and therefore the flotation efficiency of air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation are strongly dependent on the operating and design variables such as air flow rate, slurry flow rate, underflow and overflow opening areas, percent solids in the feed, reagent levels, particle size, ASH length, etc. Time-averaged multiphase flow characteristics, as deter-mined by x-ray CT and described in a previous publication, are used to understand and explain the steady-state ASH flotation of quartz. A detailed parametric study of quartz flotation by a nominal 2-inch diameter air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH-2C) revealed the influence of these variables on the flotation response which is discussed in terms of the multiphase flow characteristics. Thus, a phenomenological description of quartz flotation has been established to assist in the further development and utilization of the ASH technology.

Two modes of potential loss of oxime extractants in liquid extraction processes for the extraction of copper have been studied. In loss "by chemical degradation, two mechanisms of acid hydrolysis are possible, some reagents degrade primarily in the organic bulk phase, Others at the interface between the organic phase-- phase protects the oxime but salts added to the aqueous acid phase can promote the rate of degradation. The reagents reported on are the LIX series (Henkel Cpn), SME529 (Shell Chem.Co.) and P5100 (Acorga) Loss by organic entrainment in the aqueous phase leaving mixer-settlers has also been studied, parameters investigated including impeller/tank geometry and the phase inlet arrangements. The consequences of extractant loss by the above mechanisms...are commented upon. They include the direct economic cost, the possible environmental problems and the implications for downstream operations such, as electrowinning.

NIOSH researchers and an industry partner conducted an investigation to study the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions in mining. The study required a significant commitment of time and resources from the cooperating site, Bridger Coal Company. This paper focuses on some of the challenges faced by the researchers and their cooperator. Challenges included the need to redesign methods of identifying and prioritizing injuries, and the need to train the workforce in ergonomics while still maintaining progress and interest in the process. The authors discuss some practical interventions implemented by Bridger Coal to date, and discuss future research implications brought about by PacifiCorp’s Generation Business Unit, who monitored the project to determine whether an employee-owned ergonomic process could be implemented throughout their operations.

Most of the quartz used in electronics is synthetic and is manufactured using a technique called hydrothermal growth. This paper reviews the basics of hydrothermal growth, the feedstocks used for these crystals and the challenges to improving the growth process. The NS9 Drop Shaft contract formed part of the Waste Pollution Abatement Program (WPAP) conducted by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD). The contract involved the construction of two shafts, a deaeration chamber and connecting tunnel, and ancillary facilities. Portions of the construction were located in saturated overburden where dewatering was prohibited. Ground freezing was utilized for temporary support of the excavation. This paper concentrates on the freezing system and the excavation of frozen ground, with particular emphasis on the use of mechanical cutting equipment, including a raiseborer and a roadheader.

During design of a 550-foot rectangular shaft in alluvium, lateral support within the excavation was an anticipated construction problem. Actual experience showed that the nearly 9 x 14 foot excavation required no lateral support. A strain measurement program con- current with construction and for a 9-month period following completion of the shaft detected only minor strains. Shaft design included consideration of available geological information. Site exploration included a 754-foot drill hole, cored at selected intervals, and a suite of geophysical well logs. Generalized physical properties of the alluvium were developed from laboratory core testing. An elasto-plastic, finite element computer program (DAHLKE) developed by the Spokane Mining Research Center U.S. Bureau of Mines, has been recently used to analyze the behavior of the alluvium around the shaft. Analysis showed that yielding first develops in the shaft corners and progressively expands into the wall zones around the shaft as loading increases. Gradual growth of a plastic zone progressed outward from the excavation boundary at increasing loads but had limited extent and was surrounded at all stress levels by an infinite elastic zone. This design review, aided by computer analysis, confirmed that the shaft would have been considered theoretically stable as designed.

High temperature, methane, dust and other disasters are getting more serious with mining depth getting deeper and the development of mechanization in underground mines. An application of a descensional ventilation to a coalface is one of the effective measures to solve the above problemes. The descensional ventilation is an venttilation that an airflow in a coalface wouuld downflow along an inclination of a coalface and the direction of the airflow is the same as coalflow. Since 1960's, the descensional ventilation has been applied to 171 coalfaces in 46 coal mines of 23 coal mine administrations in China, such as Pingdingshan , Zhongliangshan, Pubai, Huangshi coal mine administrations. Among the 171 coalfaces, there were 104 coalfaces taking 60.8% in gently inclined seam. The coalfaces in inclined seam and steep seam were individually taking 18.7 % and 20.5 %. There were 77 coalfaces taking 45 % of the total in low gassy coal mines and coal and methane outburst mine were individually taking 17% and 38%. There were 141 coalfaces taking 82.5% of the total in potential danger of dust explosion. There were 125 coalfaces taking 73.1% of the total in potential danger of spontaneous combustion. Therefore, the descensional ventilation can be used in coalfaces under different conditions in China. The practice at home and abroad shown that the application of the descensional ventilation to coalfaces has obvious results in dust control, temperature control, preventing methane accumulation at top corner angle and control of spontaneous combustion in goaf. To more safely and reliably apply the descensional ventilation to coalface and to provide a way for the development of mine ventilation technology in China, the paper will have discussions on the following problems: METHANE EMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION AT COALFACE WITH DESCENSIONAL VENTILATION Methane emission in a coalface with a descensional ventilation is an argued issue for many years. Base on the coal practice, special similar model tests and researches in China, the followings are our main comments. The Descensional Ventilation can Reduce the Methane, Accumulation at the Top Corner Angle. The measurements in six coalfaces with the downward airflow in Qinhemen Mine, Fuxin Coal Mine Administrations shown that the methane concentration at the top corner angle is often up to l% when the coalface has the upward, airflow. The max. methane concentration at the top corner angle is about 0.49 to 0.7% when the coalface has the descensional ventilation. Therefore, with the descensional ventilation, it basically solved the overlimited gas concentration at the top corner angle which is a potential danger to coal production. Because the direction of upfloating gas is opposite to the direction, of the descensional airflow, the descensional ventilation; could increase a turbulent flow mixing capacity of the methan gas and air, and reduce a possibility of methane; accumulation. Due to an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the descensional ventilation lower than an air leakage in goat when the coalface with the, ascensional ventilation, a less methane quantity will release from goat at the descensional ventialtion. It should be pointed out that due to a higher air leakage at ascensional ventilation and the direction of the air; leakage same to the direction of the natural upfloating methane in goaf, those will cause a large methane; accumulation at the top of the goaf and easy bring about, methane accumulation and overlimited methane concentration at the top corner angle with an ventilation vortexflow at the top corner angle. On the other hand, because the direction of the upfloation force function is upward, the descentional ventilation could minimize as possibility of methane accumulation at top corner angle in coal with the descensional ventiltion.

Attempts were made to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate particles by adding selected frothers or precoated fine particles. A number of frothers for floating, specifically coarse coal and metallic minerals, were examined. Two of the frothers increased the flotation recovery of coarse phosphate by 3% on bench scale. Plant evaluation yielded improvements in overall phosphate recovery in the presence of these frothers. Addition of fine particles was also found to enhance coarse flotation under given conditions. Size, amount, and hydrophobicity of the fines added was determined to have a major influence on the coarse flotation efficiency. The grade of the product with and without frothers and particulate additives remained the same. Change in froth stability and viscosity are believed to be the primary reasons for enhanced recovery of coarse phosphate particles.

Nowadays, geophysical prospecting is implemented in order to resolve a diversity of geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical problems. Though plenty of applications and a lot of research have been conducted in the country-side, only a few have been reported in the literature concerning urban areas, mainly due to high levels of noise present that aggravate most of the geophysical methods (e.g. electromagnetic, seismic, gravity etc.) or due to spatial limitations that hinder normal method implementation (e.g. electrical). Among all geophysical methods, electrical tomography proves to be the most rapid and urban noise insusceptible technique. This work presents a case study in the urban area of Hania (Crete I., Greece), where Electrical Resistivity Tomographies (ERTs) have been carried out for the detection and identification of possible buried ancient ruins or other manmade structures, prior the foundation of a building. Nineteen profiles were surveyed in a 20x40m grid using dipole-dipole configuration. The results indicate two areas of interest, that are interpreted as probable old wells, in the context of the existence, in former times and in the same area, of an olive oil plant. In the vicinity, near surface ancient ruins have been disclosed, but no such evidence provided this survey, for the particular area under study and the prospected depth. The collected ERT-data were processed by applying advanced algorithms in order to obtain a 3D-model of the study area that depicts more clearly and accurately the interesting subsurface structures.
