For traditional underhand cut-and-fill mining operations, it can be challenging to design a suitable cemented paste backfill (CPB) mix that can meet the necessary strength requirements and yet maintain its ductility. In deep underground metal mines, the CPB must achieve a high enough strength to be competent under high stress conditions while also remaining ductile enough to withstand high strain from squeezing ground as underhand mining continues under backfilled stopes. To eliminate ground falls that result in injuries and fatalities, researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have partnered with Aerix Industries, a producer of concrete additives, to study the effects of foaming agents on the strength and ductility of CPB. This laboratory study examines the impact of various amounts of foam additive on the strength and ductility of CPB mix designs, using binder and tailings provided by Hecla Limited from the Lucky Friday Mine

Sometimes a project is born easy, sometimes a project has a hard time being born. Probably every project can say we had tremendous problems to overcome and they would all be right. This project had all things happen to it. Born easy, a hard time after being born, there were tremendous problems to overcome but here it is, a major copper project, a major operation, and a new source of copper for Mexico and the world market. La caridad is an ore body located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level and the nearest major city is Hermosillo, the capital city of Sonora. Hermosillo is located approximately 270 kms (about 168 miles) to the southwest of la caridad. North of la caridad, 130 kms (about 81 miles), is the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona, which has a sister city on the Mexican side of the border -Agua Prieta.

The Urad property had been worked intermittently for over 50 years before American Metal Climax (AMAX) started an extensive exploration program on this property in 1961. The detailed studies of the property proved a large ore body of low grade molybdenum ore that could be mined by modified panel caving methods. Mine development and mill construction for a 5000 TPD operation was completed in July 1967. The Urad mine and plant site is located 55 miles west of Denver near Berthoud Pass. The plant elevation is 10,200 feet. The crushing plant is located underground because available surface area is re¬stricted by snow slide hazards. Crushing plant layout and ventilation system design for the Urad mine was based on our operating experience at similar crushing facilities located at the Climax operations. Low speed conveyors of generous width, adequate exhaust volumes at all ore transfer locations, large hoods and good conveyor skirting have made the Urad underground crusher dust control operations very satisfactory. Good maintenance and cleanup of the crusher facilities have made a clean working area with very low dust exposure. The ore from the mine is dropped approximately 1000 feet through ore passes to scraping drifts above the crusher and then transferred to the coarse ore bin by 150 h.p. slusher hoists. A reciprocating plate feeder under the coarse ore bin feeds a 48 x 60 jaw crusher. Ore from under the crusher is conveyed on a 48 in. belt to a vibrating screen where oversize passes through a 7 ft. Standard cone crusher. The crushed ore along with the screen undersize is conveyed on a 42 in. belt to a 1000 ton surge bin.

"In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. Radar waves are reflected by any boundary or object where they encounter a large change in electrical properties.2 The usual cause of such a change is a difference in moisture content. This report describes Koppelman's work to develop the K-Fuel® Series C Process used to dry and stabilize Powder River Basin coal. It also contains summaries of the results of bench-scale and pilot plant tests conducted to prove the Series C Process. The process is being used by the KFx-Thermo Ecotek partnership for a 500,000 ton per year commercial plant that has been constructed near Gillette, Wyoming. The plant is presently undergoing shakedown.

This paper examines the computerization steps of United Coal Company of Bristol, Virginia. OVERVIEW Producing close to 7,000,000 tons per year, United Coal Company is one of the most interesting mining companies in the east. Their approach to mining reflects a dedication to modern technologies and extraction methodologies. With varying amounts of production coming from four divisions (a fair amount of production comes from contract operators) and over a billion tons in recoverable reserves, United rests heavily on the planning and engineering efforts of a centralized engineering group. Although each division relies on its own engineering personnel for day-to-day management and operations, long range planning and reserve management is conducted at the corporate engineering level. This group, while extremely competent and efficient, is relatively small (7 people), when compared to the needs of a large mining company.

The concept of "heat recuperation" for the grate-kiln pelletizing system was first implemented at the Sydvaranger plant in Norway in 1974. Essentially, heat recuperation involves bringing hot air from the second stage of the pellet cooler to the drying zone to increase drying-air temperature to the maximum limit. 'Burner-fuel savings result from a lower kiln secondary-air mass flow at a higher temperature. Because of the fuel benefits achieved at Sydvaranger, heat recuperation has been included innumerous new grate-kiln plants built since then, and some older plants have been retrofitted for heat recuperation. In recent years there has been much confusion about the fuel benefits of heat recuperation. To answer some of the questions, a mathematical model was developed and plant tests were conducted at Minntac Phase 111. Minntac is a magnetite taconite concentrating and pelletizing plant, and Phase III has two indurating lines. This paper presents the results of the studies and plant tests.

Introduction The Sleeper mine is a near-surface gold mine located in a remote area 56 km (35 air miles) northwest of Winnemucca, NV (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1984 by an Amax exploration geologist. Favorable drilling results led to feasibility studies and metallurgical testwork. Final evaluation of the mine potential proceeded very quickly. The project received Amax board approval in July 1985. Eight months later, the process plant was fully operational. The first gold ($1 million) was shipped one month later, in March 1986. Total plant capital was $27 million. Payback was achieved in six months. The Sleeper mine was expected to produce 1.6 t (53,000 oz) of gold and 1.3 t (41,000 oz) of silver annually. However, the ore body exceeded all expectations. Production for the first 10 months of operation amounted to 4 t (128,000 oz) of gold and 2.9 t (94,000 oz) of silver. Direct cash operating costs are in the $1.77/g ($55 per oz) range. Amax is actively conducting exploration nearby for additional reserves to extend the mine's life. (See update on page 242.) Geology The Sleeper gold deposit is located on the northwestern flank of the Slumbering Hills and in the Awakening Mining District. Rocks exposed in the vicinity of the deposit are interbedded siltstones, sandstones, and limestones of Triassic age. They are overlain by latite lava flows and tuffs of Tertiary age. Dikes and sills of latite and andesite intrude the sedimentary rocks. Quaternary deposits of mostly sand with minor gravel and clay cover a pediment containing the gold deposit. The sedimentary and volcanic rock units have been transsected and offset by extensive north- northeast trending faults and less abundant northwest trending faults. Both fault systems fractured and prepared the ground for subsequent invasions of mineral-bearing hot spring geothermal waters. The hot spring systems produced widespread hydrothermal alteration and gold mineralization at silicified centers near feeder fault structures. The deposit is hosted by siltstone and latite that have been hydrothermally brecciated. The main breccia is elongated north-northeasterly. The hydrothermal breccia zones appear to dip steeply to the west. Gold mineralization consists of native gold and electrum deposited in two or more high-grade quartz-breccia veins. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) was used to determine the-surface characteristics of products from operating Pb-Zn-Cu concentrators on the New Lead Belt of southeast Missouri and pure galena and sphalerite samples treated-with flotation reagents in concentrations similar to those used in the mills. The emphasis was on the action of surface modifiers such as Na2Cr207, starch, SO2, CuSO4 and NaCN in sphalerite flotation and in the galena-chalcopyrite separation. The objective of the investigation was to monitor the relative oxidation states of the mineral and reagent constituents and correlate these surface concentrations and oxidation states with flotation theory and practice. ESCA was able to follow the action of all the modifiers except NaCN. The existence of PbCrO4 on the surface of galena conditioned with Na2Cr207 was verified. The Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 scavenger concentrate was found to be significantly more oxidized than the Pb in the bulk PbS-CuFeS2 rougher concentrate. ESCA was found to be most useful for investigating the actions of modifiers rather than collectors due to the large amounts of sulfur and background carbon already present on the mineral surfaces. After calibration for the particular chemical system of interest, ESCA can yield semi-quantitative analyses of the oxidation states of many elements (except hydrogen, and helium) present in the outer 10 to 25 A of a sulfide mineral surface.

Froth flotation of coal is growing in importance and complexity. Some of the reasons for these changes follow. 1) A need exists for energy resource conservation. 2) Preparation plants are processing widely varying coal -- deep seam, strip and stockpiled either separately or as blends. 3) More fines are being generated because more mines are using automatic mining equipment. 4) It is more practical and economical to remove ash and sulfur at the preparation plant than during utilization.

Over the last five years, a large number of small to medium sized carbon-in-pulp gold treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 -1,500,000 tpa of ore. In many cases, the primary requirement was to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost, relating to the limited capital resources and tight cash flow positions of these relatively small mining companies. Since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners resulted in an obvious and significant capital cost, most plants were built without thickeners, without doing a detailed cost-benefit analysis on their inclusion, However, the increasing use of High Rate Thickener?s (HRT s) in the mineral processing industries resulted in a reassessment, in some cases, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas, where borefields were costly to install and water was limited. It has become apparent, though, since startup and operation of these installations, that the savings in cyanide consumption is also a very significant factor and can be used as a primary justification for the installation of a HRT in many cases.

he leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated by using the rotating disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effect of rotating speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions, and catalyst on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in view of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the potential-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was too slow at temperatures below 100°C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to be 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.

Since 1882, world zinc production has increased. In contrast, United States zinc production rose until about 1915, but since then has remained nearly constant, with a slight tendency to decrease. Production from the Tri-State district, the largest early source of zinc in the United States, has gone down steadily; this decline has been balanced by a growth in the rate of other districts. These changes in United States production are due to economic, not geological, factors. Recent exploration has located large mineable ore bodies; additional deposits will undoubtedly be found in the strata-bound carbonate rock and volcanogenic environments. A statistical analysis of the exploration effort in the Middle Tennessee district indicates that new discoveries can be expected there. Thus, the United States is in an early stage of the production cycle for zinc. Of major mining districts in the United States, only the Tri-State is exhausted under current economic conditions; large zinc resources of low-grade material, which would repay mining at higher prices or improved technology, are known to exist in that district.

The flotation system is usually distinguished from other physical chemical systems by the importance of interactions at the solid-liquid and solid-gas interfaces. In recent years, numerous quantitative studies have been made of the distribution of common collectors between the solid and aqueous solution phase. Although in flotation the main emphasis is placed on the adsorption process, chemical reactions will also take place in the bulk solution phase, These side reactions are often undesirable and will contribute towards the complex behavior of many a flotation system In sulfide flotation, the precipitation of insoluble base metal xanthates is a well-known phenomenon although the conditions under which the precipitation reaction will proceed and the magnitude of the solubility products are not known with accuracy. A knowledge of the solubility of these xanthate salts will not only be of value in flotation research, but the mill operator might be interested in knowing whether precipitation of metal xanthate can be controlled or completely prevented in the flotation circuit thereby reducing reagent consumption, For these various reasons the solubility of lead, copper, zinc, and silver ethyl xanthate was determined. The experimental techniques and results will be discussed in this paper.

Piles of sulfide-bearing overburden, ore, and tailings have the potential to generate acid drainage (AD) when exposed to an oxidizing environment. Laboratory column experiments were conducted using acid-generating overburden material with an added surface amendment of limestone and/or lime. Artificial rainwater was introduced and allowed to drain through the columns. Results showed that the limestone and/or lime reacted with the acidic rock, resulting in the precipitation of a hardpan layer of gypsum and amorphous iron oxy-hydroxide at the surface. The hardpan layer significantly reduced the effective permeability of the column. Based on this study, hardpan layers can be created as chemical caps to significantly reduce the infiltration of rainwater and snowmelt into acidic overburden or tailings material. Unlike traditional capping methods (for example, clay and high density polyethylene (HDPE) covers), chemical caps are self-healing.

Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts. Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increasing usage for acid mine drainage mitigation as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January of 1997, Mettiki Coal Corporation has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulfurization material from Virginia Power's Mt. Storm Unit #3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki mine. This paper provides an overview of the key design, transportation, regulatory, and environmental issues faced in the project.

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC control of complete circuits such as heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be readily developed using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques which are first applied off-line in manual mode through the use of control charts and then this process is brought on-line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to fully automate the circuit. This paper outlines the types of control strategies employed and presents examples of automatic verses manual control.

An increasing number of water pollution control systems are certain to be installed by many industries in the future because of new federal, state, and local government regulations, and because of the rising general concern about the deterioration of our water resources. Extensive engineering, some of it based on methods not yet developed, will be required if these new systems are to provide optimum pollution control. Capital cost, operating cost, and present and future regulatory requirements will be primary factors to be considered by engineers. This paper outlines procedures and gives examples of advanced engineering practices that have achieved efficient pollution control systems in the steel and nonferrous industries.
