The Red Dog Operation is located in northwestern Alaska at Latitude 68°, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The orebody was acquired by the NANA Regional Corporation, (an Alaska Native Corporation established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971), in 1980 in their land selection. In 1982 Cominco American and the NANA Corporation signed a development agreement and Cominco Alaska Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, was formed to manage the Red Dog Project. An extensive exploration program in 1980 -1982 outlined a mineral inventory of 85 million tons, at a grade of 5.2% Pb, 17.1 % Zn, and 2.4 oz/ton Ag, which makes the Red Dog the second largest deposit ever discovered. Broken Hill, in Australia, is the only zinc orebody which was originally larger than Red Dog. The design of the facilities is to process 2.1 million tons of ore annually, which will produce 560,000 tons of zinc concentrate, 100,000 tons of lead concentrate and 50,000 tons of bulk lead/zinc concentrate.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

In this paper we present an availability approach for determining the capacity of a major bucket wheel excavator (BWE) system to be used in Yuabaoshan surface coal mine in China. Based on previous time studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes, and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, we develop a model taking into account all random failures and present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity are discussed in the paper.

"INTRODUCTIONThe shales of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been known to experience time-dependent deformations (TDD); those initiated by excavation-induced stress relief which progress with time as a function of rock porewater salinity, access to freshwater (or air) of lower salinity, clay and calcite content, and the buildup of swelling pressures within the rock mass. These deformations can induce long-term pressures on shaft walls and tunnel linings, especially if the permanent works are constructed soon after excavation, with very little time delay. This paper presents measurements of time dependent deformation of recent shaft and tunnel projects constructed in the GTA, and draws conclusions regarding the main influences on the TDD. The key input parameters for the numerical predictive model are critically assessed. Projects which are discussed include the Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel, Hydro One Midtown Tunnel and Hanlan Feedermain (Contract 3).MECHANISM OF TIME DEPENDENT DEFORMATIONExplanation of MechanismThe Georgian Bay Shale unit consists of typically moderately weathered to fresh, grey to dark grey, fine to very fine grained fissile shale interbedded with slightly weathered to fresh grey, fine grained calcareous siltstone and limestone interbeds. There are two distinctive features of the shale in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). One is a high horizontal stress regime, and the second is long-term time dependent swelling behavior which develops when the following factors occur (Lo and Micic, 2010):• Stress relief of the rock mass• Outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid• Availability of fresh waterThe swelling is a consequence of the reduction in confined stress in the rock which occurs upon excavation in combination with a differential gradient in salinity between the saline rock porewater and freshwater or even humid air. Mine Development Associates, Inc. was formed in March of 1987 to provide mine engineering assistance to the mineral industry. To be competitive with other firms, Mine Development must be able to provide quick and accurate ore reserves and mine plans for clients. Commercially available mining software was necessary for Mine Development to assist the client. This paper describes how Mine Development chose mining software, the time involved in getting up to speed, and several case histories of how the software is used. The case histories discussed include: * 3,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 5,000,000 ton gold deposit in South Dakota. * 1,000,000 ton gold deposit in Australia. * +100,000,000 ton gold deposit in Nevada. * 25,000,000 ton carbonate deposit in California.

The Eskay Creek Mine, a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia started operations in late 1994. For the first three years of operation, ore was crushed to minus 2 inch; blended to satisfy smelter terms and direct shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Before commencing the above operations, preliminary evaluations had indicated that an extremely complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. Subsequently markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations, at a nominal production rate of 300 tonnes per day, were commenced. Exploration diamond drilling in 1995 and 1996 discovered additional lower grade mineralized zones, which are less economic or uneconomic as direct shipping ore. Testwork demonstrated that these lower grade zones could be upgraded to marketable concentrates in a simple flotation mill. The mill was built in 1997 and has been in operation since late 1997. The mining rate now has increased to 400 tonnes per day including 250 tonnes per day of the direct shipping ore and ISO tonnes per day of the mill ore. Prime Resources Group Inc. wholly owns the Eskay Creek Mine. Homestake Canada Inc. owns 50.6% of Prime's shares and manages and operates the mine on Prime's behalf. This paper discusses the mining and milling operations as well as ore shipment and smelter contracts' administration.

This paper reports measurement results for radio frequency (RF) propagation around 90° corners in tunnels and underground mines, for vertically, horizontally and longitudinally polarized signals. Measurements of signal power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut were performed at four frequencies — 455, 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz — that are common to underground radio communication systems. From the measurement data, signal power loss was determined as a function of signal coupling from the main entry into the crosscut. The resultant power loss data show there are many factors that contribute to power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut, including frequency, antenna polarization and crosssectional entry dimensions.

The ability to compete profitably in a competitive, demanding and specialized market, requires all components of productivity to be optimized toward the same manufacturing goal. This ever present requisite is seldom more apparent than with the quality control (PC) considerations that confront the super-refined metallurgical production necessary for today's exacting technical applications. In a work-place that already exceeds all environmental standards for cleanliness, this paper describes the development of specific environmental mechanisms and controls implemented at a titanium processing facility to impact both the minimal air-borne particulate contaminants and excessive process heat generation which are believed to degrade product purity. Based on the analysis of a carefully structured and instrumented field survey, two alternative solutions were proposed to modify the present facility utilizing a forced air (blowing) system. The first scenario requires ambient air to be drawn from a louvered rooftop installation and ducted to specific zones within the plant with appropriate weighted louvers and wall and roof exhausters designed into the system for air control. The second scenario incorporates a properly sized baghouse to be used in conjunction with the first system.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach and discrete fracture network (DFN) model, generated from the field surveys, are novel methodologies to study fracture rock mass behavior. In this paper, SRM and DFN methodologies were used to understand the influence of natural fractures on the mechanical response and failure mechanisms of stone mine pillars. First, a multi-stage up-scaling procedure with the homogenization process is established. Later, a stochastic sampling process on the SRM model to have further insight on the stone mine pillar mechanics is performed. Two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is utilized to represent intact rock with the Voronoi-Trigon discretized blocks and to capture fractured rock mass behavior. The laboratory-size limestone mine rock specimens are systematically up-scaled to the average width of the field-size stone mine pillars. Then, the DFN model, generated from field data, is sampled to construct the SRM of the field-size pillars. By doing so, the effect of discrete discontinuities on pillar stability is studied by assessing the pillar strengths and failure mechanisms in various width-to-height ratios.

"Pipes are used on mine sites in a variety of applications including transport of slurry, conveying clean and processing water, and in mine dewatering. Mine waters and slurries can cause pipe wear and failures via several mechanisms (or combinations thereof) such as abrasion, scaling, and corrosion. Polyethylene (PE) pipe materials have grown in popularity over the past several decades due to their chemical and mechanical properties (e.g., inertness, flexibility, relatively low density) and low cost. While PE is generally resistant to corrosion, it is subject to abrasion. To combat this, a novel, rubber-like liner is in development. In addition to comprehensive abrasion testing, however, the liner must be evaluated to see how it performs under other conditions. Here, a brief field study is described that tested PE pipes with the new liner against traditional PE pipes to specifically assess mineral scale buildup. The study was conducted in the Reiche Zeche study mine in Freiberg, Germany in six different locations with varying water qualities and flow conditions. INTRODUCTION Water and slurry conveyance are major operations on and around mine and mill sites, from mine dewatering, to tailings transport, to water treatment processes. Conveyance systems in such applications can include great lengths of pipe materials along with pumps and monitoring instruments, and thus represent significant capital investments. Due to the variability of the physical and chemical properties of water and slurries, pipe materials are subject to a wide range of conditions. These can cause pipe wear and eventually failure leading to serious economic, environmental and social, consequences. While pressure-induced pipe failures (e.g., ruptures or ""bursts”) can be immediate, most failure mechanisms involve gradual processes. Scaling and sedimentation can present major problems for pipe systems conveying highly mineralized waters. Sedimentation generally refers to the deposition of suspended solids, such as sand, clay, silt, or organic matter onto pipe surfaces. This phenomenon can occur due to a decrease in water velocity or particle collisions with the pipe wall. Scaling, on the other hand, commonly refers to the deposition of precipitated mineral salts (including oxides and hydroxides) onto pipe surfaces. Mine waters often have extremely high ion concentrations (i.e., high dissolved solids content) due to their interaction with enormous surface areas of minerals, which are exposed during mining and processing operations (Brown and Barley, 2002). As these waters are transported, slight changes in temperature, pressure or chemistry (e.g., pH or ORP) can cause instability with respect to ion solubility such that salt precipitation begins to occur. “Seed” crystals can rapidly grow and attach to pipes, either due to local surface phenomenon near the pipe wall (e.g., which can promote coagulation) or sedimentation of the precipitated solid. Whether due to suspended or precipitated solids, as the solids begin to stick to pipe walls, “aging” or hardening processes can commence; and the build-up of scale can become self-perpetuating as the scale itself provides an attractive “nucleus” for further attachment of particles or crystal growth (Muryanto et al., 2014). Over time, scale-buildup reduces the effective pipe diameter, which can ultimately result in decreased flow velocity, clogging and, in some instances, bursting (Dirany et al., 2016)."

In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company's participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920's, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah's strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday's horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today's- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today's 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today's advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NAPA) provides guidance for federal agencies in making informed decisions. The Act has been used to determine the potential environmental impacts from mining and other natural resource operations, primarily in the Western USA. To accomplish the purpose of the Act, a process for developing environmental documents was established. The documents (EA/EISs) evaluate environmental impacts and are produced by federal agencies through public participation and cooperating agency review. Effective interactions and up front coordination between agencies and industry is required. An abbreviated history of environmental protection in the USA leading to NEPA, the driving regulation, objectives, provisions and limitations of the Act, and select mining related NEPA projects III the Western U.S. are discussed in this paper.

The impact generated by old abandoned mines in Peru have produced mining environmental liabilities, which can generate an impact on the environment. In the search for long-term sustainable solutions, Phytoremediation is presented as an interesting alternative, since it allows the use of Peruvian native plant species for the accumulation of heavy metals. In this paper, we present the results of native high Andean species: Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida. The final metal concentration in the aerial parts and in the roots of each plant show that Stipa Ichu is more efficient to recover Fe, reaching almost 278 times its initial value. In the same way, this plant is efficient to remove Zn, Cu and Cd, reaching maximum values of 64, 39 and 12 times its initial concentration respectively. Cortaderia Nitida turned out to be more efficient to recover Fe, Zn, Cu and Cr, with highest recovery of 250, 117, 39 and 13 times its initial value respectively. Finally, based on translocation factor, Stipa Ichu has better capacities of hyperaccumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr. Cortaderia Nitida only shows hyperaccumulation of Cr.

The Alligator Ridge Mine is located 70 miles northwest of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. Development of the mine began in the late 1970's as a joint venture between Amselco Minerals, Inc. and Occidental Minerals Corporation, with Amselco as the operating partner. Early in 1983 Nerco Minerals Company acquired Occidental's share of the property. The mine and ore processing facility have operated at capacity since 1981 producing 680,000 tonnes of ore and 1,900 kg of gold per year. The gold ore deposits at Alligator Ridge consist of disseminated micron-size gold particles in a silicified siltstone matrix. The deposit comprises three separate but adjacent areas of mineralization that are designated as Vantage 1, Vantage 2, and Vantage 3 after the name of the basin in which the deposits lie.

Large tonnages of copper and molybdenum sulfide ore are treated by flotation. Substantial savings could be realized, particularly in high-capacity concentrators, by use of a simplified flotation technique involving lower reagent consumption. Chalcopyrite and molybdenite from some deposits can be floated by use of only a frother as a single flotation reagent; acceptable concentrate grade and recovery can be obtained. Separation of molybdenite from copper sulfides may become simpler and less costly. The genesis of the ore and the ions present in the flotation pulp liquid phase appear to be the major success-determining factors.

Large mining companies use a number of sophisticated analytical techniques for introducing the element of risk into the valuation of mineral reserve sites. These methods include, but are not limited to, sensitivity analysis, computer simulation, conditional probability, and portfolio theory. Such techniques enable the managements of these large companies to have an awareness of the many possible ramifications of their investment decisions. On the other hand, small mining companies and individuals in the mining business, due to limited financial and technical resources, still rely primarily on single point estimates of the value of mineral reserves. These small miners introduce the aspect of risk only through the application of an appropriate "speculative" discount rate. This paper illustrates the application of a technique for the introduction of risk into investment analysis. The method appears to be most suitable for use by small mining companies and individuals contemplating a large investment in a new mineral reserve site.

"While many classic mineral processing circuit design approaches rely on deterministic methods, numerous studies have shown that the uncertainty inherent to the various input parameters can significantly influence design decisions. In a separation circuit, many of the technical uncertainties can be mathematically represented as statistical distributions for the unit recovery and feed grade. These uncertainties are then propagated by the circuit design and reflected in the circuit performance indicators, such as product grade and global recovery. An effective design strategy entails identifying which units are most influential in this uncertainty propagation and thus merit further consideration. Unfortunately, few analytical tools provide this information, particularly those that rely solely on deterministic methods. However, one promising approach is through the application of Taguchi’s method, in a fashion similar to statistical tolerancing of manufactured products. Since the technical challenges are fundamentally similar, Taguchi’s method shows promise in evaluating the level of compounded uncertainty by various circuit designs while determining the role of each separation stage on the overall selectivity and variability of separation circuits. This paper demonstrates Taguchi’s method in several two and three unit circuit designs. INTRODUCTION AND METHOD DESCRIPTION Uncertainty in Mineral Processing Circuit Design Analysis and estimation of uncertainty propagation in mineral processing separation circuits is an essential and significant aspect of an optimal circuit design procedure. Most of the current circuit design methodologies have been constructed, implemented, and validated using a deterministic modeling approach. However, numerous studies have shown that the inherent uncertainty induced by uncertain design parameters can be a significant factor in many mineral processing applications (e.g. Kraslawski 1989; Xiao and Vien 2003; Ghaffari et al. 2012). Thus, an effective circuit design methodology must be able to quantify uncertainty in separation circuits with limited input data. This paper describes Taguchi’s method, as an experimental design technique, to approximate uncertainty in mineral processing applications, and then the similarity of results between Taguchi’s method and Monte Carlo Simulation is investigated. Monte Carlo Simulation The term “Monte Carlo Simulation” has been used to refer to a variety of stochastic simulation methods spanning a broad array of business, technical, and scientific domains. Most generally, Monte Carlo Simulation refers to numerical analysis which is based on (pseudo) random sampling from a domain of input parameters with a known statistical distribution. This methodology allows one to determine the distribution of expected results from a standard deterministic process model. Execution of a Monte Carlo simulation begins by identifying the domain of input parameters, statistical distributions for each parameter, and a deterministic process model which describes the anticipated result as a function of the inputs. Next, one discrete random sample is taken for each input parameter, considering the input distributions. The process model is then solved for this mix of input parameters, producing a single simulation result. This procedure is then repeated a “large” number of times, utilizing new randomly sampled input parameters for each simulation iteration. Once the desired number of iterations is reached, the results of each independent simulation are aggregated to produce descriptive statistics such as minimum, maximum, mean, standard deviation, kurtosis, and other distribution parameters. Given enough iterations, the Monte Carlo method fully explores potential synergies between the input parameters. Current methods for scratching a piece of rock to obtain or check the characteristics of its component material can sometimes be expensive and time consuming. Scratching a rock core requires an object with a point that it is capable of sliding along the surface of the rock while recording the response from the rock due to the sliding. With the idea of providing a cost efficient solution for a scratch device, a new generation turntable arm, composed of a cartridge with a diamond stylus and a USB output connection to the computer, was used to record the vibrations from the sliding of the stylus along a rock core surface. The output sound from the stylus was captured with the computer as an audio input signal. The raw sound data was recorded in a standard waveform audio format (wav) file, and post-processed using sound spectrum analyzer software (Spectra-Lab) to capture numerical data such as frequency, amplitude, and noise from the file. The results for frequency, amplitude, and noise were compared and plotted against the scanned surface of the rock core in the search for correlations that might represent specific characteristics of the surface being scratched.

Longwall-induced deformations could jeopardize the mechanical integrity of shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine. The in situ and induced fracture networks surrounding the gas well could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. Hence, this study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) develops a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to characterize the fractures in the overburden based on geomechanical analyses of mining-induced fracture apertures at a study site in southwestern Pennsylvania. The apertures from the geomechanical model are used to develop a stochastic DFN model of the site in fracture flow code (FFC). Multiple realizations of the stochastic DFN model that replicate potential fracture geometries are simulated, and the fracture permeability is compared with field measurements. A maximum field measurement of 5.03 × 10− 12 m2 (5080 mD) and 3.82 × 10− 13 m2 (386 mD) was estimated over the abutment pillar at the Sewickley and Uniontown horizon, respectively. The results show that the average permeabilities from the DFN model agree closely with the field measurements. In addition, the comparison of all the field measurements and 100 DFN realizations show the model is representative of field conditions. These findings provide critical information regarding fracture characteristics in the overburden, which will further be used to predict potential shale gas flow to the mine in the event of a casing breach for an unconventional gas well.
