Gelling-grade attapulgite and sepiolite clays are employed as thickening agents for the preparation of ionically contaminated drilling fluids where the use of fresh water clays are unfeasible or impossible. Attapulgite and sepiolite are nonswelling clays that can be dispersed and reflocculated by mechanical and chemical means to increase the viscosity of fresh water, salt containing waters, gypsum contaminated waters and fluids containing cement. Such gelled systems are quite stable in viscosity properties and can be further treated with other necessary additives such as thinners, water loss reducers, weighting agents, surfactants, etc. Many of the oil well drilling fluid practices have influenced such technologies as water well drilling, foundation drilling and waste disposal. The use of salt water gelling clays in these fields will be described and compared to oil well drilling.

A preliminary model has been developed for autogenous pebble milling using information obtained from studies on ball milling and SAG milling. The model treats the breakage as the weighted sum of first-order breakage of smaller particles by tumbling pebbles, non-first order breakage of larger particles which are too large to be nipped properly by pebbles, autogenouS fracture and chipping of larger lumps to form pebbles, and autogenous fracture and abrasion of pebbles. The model includes the effects of residence time distribution, classification through the exit grate, and a mass transfer relation which describes the accumulation of fine material in the mill. Example simulations are given, based on breakage parameters determined from batch grinding tests in laboratory mills. fracture breakage and abrasion. In the development of these preliminary mass balance equations it will be assumed that breakage by fracture is first-order, but this assumption will be modified later in the paper. It will also be assumed that the residence time distribution of a long autogenous mill can be described by an equivalent series of m fully-mixed mills, with a classification action imposed on the mill contents by the discharge grate. Size distributions are expressed as a v2 geometric series, numbered 1 for the top size down to n for the fines, or "sink" interval. If the holdup in the mill is W then the rate of breakage of material in size interval i is given by SiwiW, where wi is the fraction of material in size interval i, and Si is -the overall specific breakage rate of size i material (fraction per unit time).

An overland belt conveyor system is installed for only one reason to save money. It must pay its way on a ton-mile basis over a stated period of time, and do so in competition with other forms of transportation. Such a system with its economies has recently been installed at Simco-Peabody's mine near Coshocton, Ohio by Link-Belt Company. Three miles in length, this system carries coal from open pit and underground mining facilities to the Conesville Power Plant of Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company. The coal was formerly trucked from the mine direct to the power plant; but over the years the mining operations have moved progressively farther and farther from the plant, making the over-the-road hauling distance correspondingly greater. Simco-Peabody has mining operations over a considerable area just east of the Conesville Station. The majority of the coal is recovered by conventional strip mining. Some underground mining` is performed by the high wall method.

Operating mines in Wyoming and Montana, which are generally characterized by shallow overburden and thick coal seams, are faced with reclamation problems which are unique to this area. Unlike the eastern or midwestern mines, removal of thick coal seams and lack of sufficient overburden creates overburden deficiencies that require careful evaluation prior to mining to insure compliance with regulatory requirements. Computer models and computer graphics can assist in such evaluation where appropriate alternatives can be selected which satisfies both the regulatory requirements and minimizes cost. This paper presents one such model used in evaluation of backfill requirements for restoration of surface and ground water regimes, restoration of mined-out areas to the approximate original contour, and the blending of the mined-out areas to the surrounding topography.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

"This paper presents a numerical study regarding the loads, and the corresponding damage, taken by the primary and secondary lining of a tunnel built in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. This study aims at establishing more rational design criteria that take into account explicity the lining performance. A 3.5 km long tunnel to be built in a densely populated northwest area of Mexico City, was considered as case study. Series of three-dimensional finite difference models, developed with FLAC3D, were used to simulate the tunnel construction, and to compute the ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments, and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams were used to study the lining performance. Several advancement lengths, and tunnel covers were considered to establish their impact on the loads transferred to the tunnel lining. A practice-oriented damage criterion for tunnels was proposed based on the interaction diagram analysis. INTRODUCTION Lining performance during conventional tunnelling, CT, as defined by the International Tunnel Association, ITA (ITA 2009) is strongly affected by the construction procedure. Special attention must be taken in cemented fine-grained materials, such as those found in the northeast portion of Mexico City, due to the potential of fragile failure (i.e. the soil fails suddenly without important deformation) that these soils may exhibit. During CT, it is assumed that the ground strength contributes to the stability of the excavation, as long as the lining is built correctly. It is common practice to consider two structures, which together form the tunnel support: 1) A primary lining, which is a flexible support, which allows excavation walls to deform to mobilize part of its shear strength, and thus contributes to the tunnel self-stability, and 2) A secondary lining. Commonly, the primary lining consists of several layers of shotcrete. In this case the installation method guarantees perfect contact between the lining and the excavation perimeter. The secondary lining, if required, is used to withstand the load conditions in the long term and also has an esthetic function. This paper presents a numerical study aimed at establishing a performance damage criterion for the primary and secondary lining design in cemented fine-grained stiff soils. Due to the lack of data, the strength and deformation parameters were established through empirically-derived relationships. Three-dimensional finite difference models were developed to simulate the tunnel construction, and compute ground settlements, internal forces, bending moments and displacements acting both on the primary and secondary tunnel linings. Interaction diagrams, along with a damage criterion were used to study the lining performance. From the results gathered insight was gained regarding tunnel lining performance during CT."

For 10 years, the author has been engaged in a program of geologic mapping of the Seward Peninsula, Alaska, for the U.S. Geological Survey. Initially, two 1:63,360-scale quadrangles were napped by traditional methods of traverses by foot and by tracked vehicle, supplemented by reconnaissance from a light aircraft owned and piloted by the author. Five summers were required to map those two quadrangles, which lie north of the tree lice in typical Arctic climate. In 1967, the project was reoriented toward the reconnaissance capping of four 1:250,000-scale quadrangles, with helicopter support to be used for cart of each of four summers amounting to about 45 hours time per support year. The light aircraft was use-,' to support the field operations. Over the year,, the aircraft was used in progressively more geologic tasks, culminating in 1970 with a successful field test of rudimentary devices made to collect soil, rock, and sediment samples while the aircraft remained airborne. Additionally, an attempt was made j- 1970 to prepare reconnaissance geologic maps entirely by the use of the light aircraft combined with foot traverses [fr??], the landed aircraft. Several such maps, prepared at the rate of about one 1:63,360-scale quadrangle per day, were checked from a helicopter by an impartial observer end were found to be sufficiently accurate for reconnaissance mapping when reduced to 1:250.000 scale.

The effects of autogenous grinding and conventional grinding on the floatabilities of copper-nickel sulfides were investigated as a part of a pilot-plant development project on the differential flotation of Duluth gabbro. At the same mesh-of-grind copper, nickel, and cobalt recoveries were higher and residual sulfur in the flotation tailings was lower with the autogenously-ground pulps. With the ball-mill-ground pulps the residual sulfur in the tailings could not be lowered to the level attained by the autogenously-ground pulps even at increased levels of the collector addition. From mineralogical examinations of concentrate and tailings samples, an electrochemical interaction between grinding media and sulfide minerals was thought to have a greater effect on sulfide mineral flotation behavior than the breakage characteristics of the ore samples in these two types of mills.

Natural resources are the reservoir from which society draws its material sustenance. Although there is a growing awareness of the need for aesthetic resources such as space for recreation and natural beauty, the basic resources are soil, air, water, and minerals including fuel. Minera's and all sources of energy gain in relative importance with advancing technology and expanding industrilization. In the highly industrialized economy of the United States, almost every aspect of man's life is touched in some way by a product of, the mineral; industries. Agriculture owes much of its productivity to mineral-based fertilizers, insecticides, and mechanical equipment. Modern construction, manufacturing, communications, and transportation are all dependent on nonmetallic minerals, metals, and fuels. Throughout history, those nations with access to minerals, and the technology for using them, have gained ascendency. Before World War II the leading powers also were, leading coal producers. In order of declining rank the five leading' coal producers were the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the USSR, and Japan. That the military victory went to the side with the greater' capacity to convert iron and coal into tools of industry, and weapons, is' more than coincidence. It is a fundamental' fact of existence. It is axiomatic that the United States must have a continually increasing supply of minerals if we are to meet the needs of our burgeoning population for a comfortable standard of living and for national security.

The Porgera gold district, like many other large gold deposits, has a long history of awareness, but only in the last five years has a geologic understanding of the district permitted the discovery of economically attractive gold reserves. The following sequence of events highlights the various significant steps in the evolution of the discovery process. The history of the district goes back about 50 years, and for several decades it was known only for its placer gold. Gradually, as gold became a more interesting metal, more and more attention was centered on the district. The sequence of events does not overstate the problems caused by isolation and climate, but the reader can imagine the difficulties inherent in such an area.

It is said that there is nothing new under the sun and this is certainly true about refractory gold Ores. Ores which have been refractory to treatment have been the bane of the Metallurgist's life ever since gold has been recognized as a metal valued for its indestructability, malleability and beauty. Webster's Dictionary defines "Refractory" as; "Resisting control or authority, stubborn, resistant to treatment or cure, unresponsive to stimuli, difficult to corrode or draw out," And gives as a synonym the word "unruly." I don't think any metallurgist would disagree with these definitions as they quite accurately describe refractory gold ores as we know them and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if many of you in this room today had applied far stonger language to your own refractory ores in the course of your metallurgical test programs. Pliny the elder put it very well when he wrote in 79 A.D., Gold is the first of man's follies, Silver the second." Perhaps Pliny was speaking of "unassayable gold" or "incipient gold." These are truly refrac tory ores which probably existed before Pliny's time and although many people have claimed to have solved their metallurgy the untold wealth that lies within them has never been bankable. On the other hand, Virgil is his Aenead, could very well have been speaking of refractory ores when he wrote; "Quid non mortalia pectora cogis, auri sacra fames!" which translates as, Accursed thirst for gold! What doest thou not compel mortals to do. Certainly, gold was extremely rare at that time because it had to be recovered by much labor from the then refractory ores and their refractoriness caused the early metallurgists (or alchemists if you will) to seek an easier way to produce it; thus the long and fruitless search for the "philosopher 's stone" which would aid in turn-

Twin roll sizers are neither compactly designed machines nor are they configured to accommodate underground mobility; in fact, twin roll sizers leave room for improvement in many aspects of the design. The DRC1200 capitalizes on the weaknesses of these machines to make a more productive, easily maintained, and compact twin roll sizer than current market offerings. These strides were made through the inception of the Hard Rock Extraction System (HRXS), which requires a mobile sizer as part of the system. After use of a third party sizer on the HRXS, potential improvements were evident. These improvements include improved structural design to reduce overall footprint and an optimized design to reduce operating cost.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. For centuries Thailand has been a significant, though primarily unofficial, producer of gold. Panning has been the traditional way of making a living for innumerable villagers during the December to May dry season following the harvest. During this period groups can be seen working the streams, rivers, fields and dry valleys at as many as 90 localities in 28 provinces. Attesting to their efforts are the five and a half ton solid gold Buddha at Wat Trimit and much of the gold jewelry sold in Bangkok. This traditional panning will continue, and probably become more extensive, in harmony with commercial endeavors using modern technology suitable for extraction of gold from types of deposits for which gravity separation would give very low recoveries. Several such deposits have been discovered in the course of geochemical and geological surveys conducted by the Royal Thai Department of Mineral Resources with the object of contributing to early interpretation of the results of a country-wide airborne survey.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. The development of a new means of measuring the relative abrasivity of a slurry came about by necessity in 1967 during a full scale loop test of a 560 H.P. reciprocating pump handling magnetite slurry. In order to evaluate the life of expendable fluid end parts, the question of the amount of attrition in a re-circulated slurry had to be considered. An expected reduction in abrasivity as a result of this attrition would certainly give erroneous data on a parts life test. There- fore, some means of measuring such change in abrasivity became imperative. Several test methods were investigated1 but it was felt that these did not fully represent the wear due to back and forth rubbing action associated with a reciprocating pump. A "rubbing block" device used some years ago to determine the quality of hard facing materials was recalled, along with its shortcomings, in that an attempt was made to suspend a small percentage of abrasive particles in a colloidal viscous "mud". Erratic results were attributed to the fact that it was difficult to maintain a consistent slurry concentration under the metal wear block and the reciprocating speed was not great enough to maintain good agitation.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). Several attempts have been made in the past sixty or so years to commerciliaze the vast oil shale deposits of the United States of America. However, the industry has yet to become viable and economic. To date, it has not been possible to produce oil from the oil shales at a competitive price when compared to the oil produced from oilfields by conventional methods. However, the development work has been quite fruitful in furthering the art of thick bed mining and technology of in situ retorting. The in situ method has the potential of recovering oil from thick beds and the resource recovery potential is much greater than that from underground mining and surface retorting. In situ methods require that the shales/ marlstones be fragmented ' in place to induce adequate porosity and permeability to allow in situ' heating of the fragmented shales. This can be accomplished by using explosives. However, it has been found that the existing blasting systems, though very efficient, are somewhat lacking. The explosive become insensitive when shot in multiple vertical decks. They can also become insensitive when spaced horizontally at close proximity to other charges. Also, since the blasting is done in a very limited free face, this limits the delay time that can be allowed between charges. Consequently it is not always possible to predict the performance of the blasting system on a routine basis. Furthermore, since it is not possible to undertake secodary blasting, it is imperative that the blast design function properly. Recent, successful retorting by Occidental Petroleum Company of retorts seven and eight suggests that some of these problems may have been overcome. This paper addresses some aspects of in situ retorting and problems those have impeded the development of a viable oil shale industry in the U.S.A.
