The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

The costs of an open-pit operation can be classified according to the following hierarchy : -overall cost of production (per ton of ore) -costs of basic operations and functions -costs of auxiliary operations -costs of machines and equipment -maintenance costs. Production cost is a measure of the open-pit mine performance and should be the final target of the management control. It is also a measure of the share of the mine in the processing stages.

This research project demonstrates the application of a mine system simulation and animation model in enhancing the efficiency of a truck-shovel operation and reducing the haulage environmental impact in an open-cut coal mine. In any mine, a key objective is to have enough equipment for production and not have excess to where it is counterproductive. Due to the advent of responsible mining, environmental regulations, and eco-friendly practices, these factors must also be considered in the analysis. The over-trucked situation at a mine will be discussed, i.e. when the number of trucks exceeds the optimum number of trucks a mine should have for the most productive/profitable mining operation. When the system has an excess number of trucks, truck utilization is reduced which impacts mine operation, capital costs and the environment, through unnecessary truck purchase, energy use, air pollution etc. A hypothetical surface coal mine layout was used for the simulation model.

Over the last six years, several new commercial families of sulfide mineral collectors have been developed. This paper summarizes some plant data and use experiences gained with each of these product families. The first is a series of products (F-series) based on a chelation mechanism of attachment. The second of these families is a series of products (S-series) based on an electrochemically controlled mechanism of attachment. The major advantage of the F-series collectors is the very high metal recovery capability in complex ores involving Au, Pt, Zn, Ni, and mixed Cu minerals. The major advantages of the S-series collectors are the very high pyrite rejection capability along with reduced lime requirements in Cu/Mo plants.

The purpose of this paper was to compare the covariance and multiquadric functions in same mining and geological applications. The basic principals of the two techniques are covered briefly. Similarities and dissimilarities of the covariance and multiquadric functions are discussed geometrically, mathematically and practically. A 14 by 16 kilometer square area in Baharia Oasis, Western Desert of Egypt, was selected for a detailed comparative test. The gravity anomalies of forty-eight test stations were computed by using the data of sixty-three control stations. The results indicated that the covariance function is quite better than the multiquadric one. On the other hand, the multiquadric function more simple in computation than the other one, which needs to precalculations such as semivariogram and covariogram. Moreover, multiquadric equations are based on geometrical and physical considerations rather than covariance functions.

The unique application of a large walking dragline in the mountains of southern West Virginia was developed and implemented by Hobet Mining, Inc. Hobet is an independent operating subsidiary of Ashland Coal and is headquartered at the No. 21 Mine in Boone County, West Virginia, near Danville. Hobet also operates the 07 Mine located in Logan County, West Virginia, near Holden. Both mines are similar in equipment and manpower used; both produce over 2,000,000 tons of clean coal annually. Each site encompasses large, contiguous properties with access to rail service. The larger of the two is the Boone County property; it totals nearly 40,000 acres and has ample reserves. In 1977, Hobet was in the process of constructing a preparation plant (Beth Station) at its 21 Mine site with a capacity for two million tons. One of the first orders of business was to design a mine plan that would provide production for the capacity of the plant. Coal production would come from a more than adequate reserve base using the most economical mining methods available. Hobet looked at different deep and surface mining methods to use in order to develop the property; ultimately, it was determined that the mountaintop removal method with the use of a large dragline was the most economical way to develop reserve. Prior to this time surface mining in mountainous Southern West Virginia was generally done by contour mining and/or augering techniques.

In recent years, miners have tried many approaches to maintenance such as: - Highly sophisticated computerized programs. - large planning groups designed to preplan and schedule work. - Contract maintenance. - Break down maintenance. Each of these approaches has faced the added constraints: - High replacement cost of equipment necessitating longer useful equipment life - management?s increased scrutiny of all indirect costs such as maintenance. Faced with these factors, what system of maintenance control is right? After visiting many properties recently, it appears there is no right system. Maintenance programs need to be tailored to the people and production constraints that occur at an individual property.

Acid rock drainage is the result of exposure of sulfidic materials, such as pyrites and sulfidic ores, to air and water. The oxidation of these sulfides is catalyzed by more than a million times by the bacteria Thiobacillus jerrooxidans and close families. Inhibition of these bacteria can mitigate 98% or more of the acid loading generated. This can be achieved by the use of certain surfactants that are selectively bactericidal to the lithotropic acidophilic bacteria. Bactericides are used in two ways. As periodic or continuous treatments for prevention of acidification of material actively handled and moved, and in controlled release form for reclamation where treatment sets up a change in site microbiology to replace Thiobacillus jerrooxidans with heterotrophic bacteria and creates a stable site without need for further treatments. Use of bactericides begins with laboratory testing of the site material to qualify the site for bactericide treatment and dosage determination. Site specific treatments are designed for active sites and reclamation. Once acid production is controlled, solubilization of metals is correspondingly reduced. Results and economics of use from active and reclamation sites are presented.

The need for reliable and adaptable underground mine communications has become a focal point for both the safety and logistics of a mining operation. New mine communication technology aims to connect personnel, equipment, and data together while setting up a network that can be utilized during normal operations and also in an emergency event. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) requires mine operators to establish post-accident, two-way communication between underground and surface personnel and electronic tracking for all mine personnel. Communications systems must be designed such that they can survive major mine accidents, including explosions, fires, inundations and ground falls. Typical, wire-bound communication technologies are vulnerable because wires are often destroyed in such accidents. Wireless technologies that work well on the surface, such as cellular telephone networks; have limited applicability underground because the wireless signals do not propagate through rock.

In maybe the world's first in a mine project financing, a US $55 million Rehabilitation Indemnity was given on behalf of the banks in a US $250 million loan to develop the Ranger uranium mine, Northern Territory, Australia. The basis of the financing was an estimate of removal of the tailings and replacement into the pit. The Indemnity was amortized by a sinking fund from the mine's revenues. Such a concept could be valuable for mineral developments in sensitive areas or jurisdictions such as British Columbia or Alaska.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. "The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

Weather changes of a daily, weekly, or seasonal period affect mineral production and cause significant losses that are considered unavoidable. Private weather forecasting services are available on a contract basis that can significantly reduce the uncertainty associated with weather-induced changes in the production of and demand for minerals. This paper provides examples of current practice and reviews the opportunities that await those producers who incorporate weather services as an integral part of their operating, scheduling, and planning procedures. Private weather forecasts can be highly accurate because atmospheric trends such as conditions and movement tend to persist and are related to previous meteorological events. Commercial meteorological services are prepared to deal specifically with a mineral producer's special problems (Table 1). Tactical use of private forecasts is a major advance over the severely restricted value of public forecasts which, of necessity, are general in nature and cover a dispersed geographic territory. Private weather services provided on a consulting fee basis offer the mineral producer the opportunity for tactical and strategic response to weather conditions at an acceptable cost. This contrasts with the too-frequent current tendency to view weather as a random variable the costs of which are unknown and about which nothing can be done.

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

"It has been more than 10 years since Montana Resources’ copper/molybdenum mine has had a lost-time injury at its site in Butte, MT. With more than 350 employees and an average production of about 15.5 Mt/a (17 million stpy), which includes 29.5 kt (65 million lbs) of copper and 4 kt (9 million lbs) of molybdenum, the mine’s journey to a decade of exemplary safety is an impressive feat that has required hard work, commitment and, most of all, leadership from every level of the operation.It has not always been an easy journey, nor has it been one without scrapes and bumps along the way, but it is one that has produced stellar results. Mike McGivern, vice president of human resources, and Pete Steilman, safety manager at the mine, spoke with Mining Engineering about how the operation transformed from a site that was accustomed to collecting citations for safety violations to one that is now collecting awards for its safety record.Simply put, Montana Resources has made safety a value and the people its top priority.The operations faced many predictable challenges in 2003, when the mine was being brought back online after three years of sitting in care-and-maintenance status. It had been shuttered in 2000 because of low commodity prices and high operating costs, and, in the three years that the mine was idled, the equipment became dilapidated, and some of it was no longer in compliance. Less than half of the workforce returned to the site for the restart, and the team was challenged with getting the gears turning again to produce copper and molybdenum. But the most daunting challenge of all of was keeping the workforce safe during the transition.In the first few years of operation the mine racked up citations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at an alarming pace, so much so that in May 2006, Montana Resources received a letter from the MSHA District Office informing the company that the operation was being placed on the Potential Pattern of Violations list due to its excessive citation history and high rate of significant and substantial citations. It was clear that something significant had to be done to change the course of action at the mine."

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

Toxic substances in On solutions can retard biological leaching of copper sulfide dump ores. On solutions were analyzed for metals, organics, and chloride, and showed inhibitory concentrations of aluminum, manganese, and chloride. Inhibition of bacterial activity by the solid fraction of On solution, with and without the organic constituents, was evaluated. Toxicity to bacterial species was evaluated by monitoring bacterial numbers, pH, Eh, and rates of iron oxidation. The On solution solids were toxic at 50 -60% of their field concentration. Most of the toxicity of the On solution was due to the organic fraction. Different SX reagents show varying degrees of inhibition of T. ferrooxidans. Bacterial inhibitory effects of carriers and lixiviants used in the SX plant should be determined so that entrained SX reagents do not retard biological dump leach systems. The reagents used should be the most cost effective and the least toxic.

In striving to develop this discussion about "Manpower for Industrial Mineral Industries" two fundamental classes of manpower are encountered. These are: 1) The Labor Force, comprised of unskilled and semi-skilled, nonprofessional personnel who participate in conducting economic, mineral deposit operations and; 2) The Professional People involved in the science, engineering, and management of such industrial enterprises. The commentary given here will be directed primarily to a review of the characteristics of the second or latter class. To pursue successfully a career as a scientist or engineer in today's industrial and social complex, it is necessary that technical knowledge must have been acquired by training and study in an institution of higher learning. Also, to act effectively, the individual must have achieved some degree of specialzation, although this element often is developed to most notable degree by post-graduate exposure and experience. In addition, and especially in the case of "management," it is desirable, indeed it is even necessary, that an individual recognize and appreciate the fundamental humanistic-sociological controls, and their nuances, as these elements exist to shape his total environment.
