Longwall mining is a highly productive and efficient coal mining method used in the USA. During longwall retreating, the belt entry must be maintained stable, and any roof fall in the belt entry would jeopardize mine safety and substantially interrupt the continuous production of coal in the longwall face. Past experience of longwall mining has shown that belt entry stability was the greatest challenge in longwall ground control, and the occurrence of roof falls in belt entries was largely associated with high horizontal stress. To properly support the roof in the belt entry, it is important to understand how longwall-induced horizontal stress changes affect roof stability in belt entries and to strategically install supplementary support to prevent any potential roof falls. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed horizontal stress measurements in the immediate roof of the belt entries for two Pittsburgh seam longwall panels oriented unfavorably to high horizontal stress. Hollow inclusion cells (HICells) were installed in the immediate roof at the intersection in each of the belt entries, and stress changes were monitored as the longwall face was approaching and passing the intersection. Numerical models were set up to calculate the longwall-induced horizontal stress changes in the roof at the monitoring sites. With the verified model, investigations were made of how horizontal stress is concentrated and relieved in the belt entry roof near the face under different panel orientations. Both measurements and modeling results showed that high horizontal stress is concentrated in the roof in the belt entry within about 15 m outby the face when a longwall panel is unfavorably oriented to the major horizontal stress. The study demonstrated that longwall-induced differential horizontal stress can be used as an indication of the degree of horizontal stress concentration. Roof support strategies are discussed on how to maintain the stability of belt entry under high horizontal stress concentration.

Dravo Lime Company has opened a new 290m (940 ft.) deep lime-stone mine near Maysville, Kentucky. As the mine was opened there were many unknowns as to the stress relationships within the rock, and their influence, if any, on the selected mining method. Therefore, a system of overlay geologic and structural maps, borehold extenso-meter measurements, and oriented photography was developed for the purposes of monitoring the internal structural relationships of the rock mass. This paper presents a description of the methods used, the observations made, and the conclusions and recommendations made as a result of the initial monitoring program.

The coal reserves in the United States are estimated to be in excess of 300 billion recoverable tons, and current projections of energy requirements indicate our increased dependence upon these reserves. The Department of Energy's Energy Outlook for 1984 projects that coal consumption in the United States will increase from 737 million tons in 1983 to 958 million tons in 1990, and then to 1,110 million tons in 1995 (Table 1). As shown in this table, the future utilization of coal in the United States is closely tied to the electric utility market, a market that consumes about 85% of the coal produced. Be- cause of this dependence on the utility market, the uncertainties of new environmental regulations, particularly those concerning sulfur emissions, could have a significant adverse impact on future coal demands in the United States. SULFUR IN U.S. COALS Most of the Nation's coal reserves contain too much sulfur to be fired directly and meet existing emission control standards. In Table 2, the sulfur contents of the coals of the eastern United States are summarized by sulfur levels according to regions. While the coals of some of the eastern regions are predominantly high in sulfur content, it is important to recognize that large tonnages of coal with relatively lower sulfur content are available in these regions. Furthermore, an often significant portion of the sulfur occurs in the form of iron sulfide (Fes2 or pyrite). Because pyrite occurs as discrete particles of high specific gravity, it can often be removed by simple, inexpensive physical coal beneficiation techniques after being liberated by stage crushing. The potential for physical removal of pyrite by conventional specific gravity processes combined with stage crushing is summarized in Table 3 on a regional basis.

"Taking the long flame coal, gas-fat coal and anthracite as samples, we tested the adsorption quantity to single component gas of N2, CO2 and CH4 under atmospheric pressure phase at different temperatures. Then we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models of different metamorphic coals. The results show that metamorphic grade, temperature and gases species are main factors to adsorption quantity of coal. The higher and lower metamorphic grade of coal have greatly influence on adsorption capacity while moderate grade of coal has opposite result. The coal adsorption amount to three single component gases under the same experimental condition is CO2> CH4> N2.The simulation precision order of four adsorption models is quadratic curve model > Freundlich isotherm model> Langmuir model >logarithmic curve model. Quadratic curve model and Freundlich isotherm model both can accurately describe the adsorption behaviors of N2 and CH4, different isothermal adsorption curve of CO2 needs two kinds or more models to describe. This has a reference value to the study of adsorption characteristics and models to single component gases.INTRODUCTION Adsorption is the interfacial phenomena that concentration of single or multiple components in the interface layer is different from the bulk phase (1964). Adsorption model is mathematical models to describe the adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent, mainly reflected to fitting effect of gas adsorption isotherm, which contribute to deeply understand the adsorption characteristics of adsorbent. Many scholars have carried out extensively experimental studies of the coal adsorption process from different angles. Zhao (2010) studied the influence of coal metamorphism to pore development of coal seam through a variety of experimental methods. Zhang (2006) analyzed the adsorption capacity and the controlling factors from three aspects of the coal rank, maceral and coal mass deformation. Cheng et al., (2002) studied the influence of pore size distribution of different rank coals to adsorption constants. Zhong (2002) carried out varieties of isothermal assay and established the prediction method of coal seam adsorption affected by a variety of conditions. R. M. Bustin (1998) proposed that we could not simply describe the change law of coal adsorption capacity and maceral content by a fixed parameter, and the adsorption capacity of the same coal rank also has great change. C. R. Clarkson et al., (1997) used four different adsorption models to describe the coal methane adsorption process, and the fitting precision of adsorption models is D-A equation >D-R equation > BET equation> Langmuir equation. Gasem, K et al., (2003) found that the fitted isothermal adsorption curve of D-A equation and BET equation are better than Langmuir equation under high pressure condition, while D-R equation and BET model are better to CO2 adsorption. In recent years, scholars’ at home and abroad research achievements of coal adsorption focused on high-pressure stage (about 0~15 MPa), mainly for coalbed methane exploitation, carbon dioxide trapping and sealing technology development, but the study of coal adsorption under atmospheric pressure phase is little. In this paper, we analyzed the adsorption characteristics and models under atmospheric pressure phase, it has a reference value to the study of characteristics and models to single component gas."

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

A new minitest of in situ uranium leaching processes at reservoir conditions is proposed. The test which consists of a single observation/ production well and two observation wells is designed to permit the evaluation of both restoration and leaching parameters. It is shown that by using a straight forward history matching procedure, sometimes called a type curve analysis, both the rate of leaching and the ultimate uranium recovery can be evaluated based on the results of the test. Type curves are presented for the case in which the reaction rate is kinetically controlled and there are no other minerals competing for oxidant. Other situations can be approached using the same techniques as those presented here.

Computer simulation continues to be one of the most successful analytical applications of computers in the mining and mineral processing industries throughout the world. Through simulation, managers and engineers can explore the impact of new technologies, equipment designs, plans and operating strategies to improve their operations. It is not uncommon for a single simulation application to provide a quick payback of analysis expenses (within weeks or months) yielding long-term financial and operational dividends. The paper will present a summary of the types of software systems that are available for use on PCs and other computer systems. Support software for curve fitting, statistical analysis, and optimization of simulation models will also be presented. Methods of leveraging simulation efforts through networking and coupling of software systems will be discussed. Finally, the trends in simulation in the mineral industries will be analyzed. Areas of strength and weakness of simulation will be discussed along with the usefulness of commercial general-purpose and custom-writ- ten simulation packages. The future possibilities for simulation in the mineral industries will be outlined and predictions on trends for the future will be presented.

The results of a 2 phase evaluation program designed to determine the amenability of an oxide ore from the Butte, Montana mine of the Anaconda Company to a sulfuric acid leach is presented. In the phase 1 preliminary evaluation, using roll tests and percolation leaching in small columns, it is shown that the ore is highly extractable at low acid consumption ratios. In the phase 2 confirmatory tests in large columns on l-l.5 tons of material, the amenability of the ore to the leaching process is proven and pregnant solution grade profiles from planned commercial heaps established.

The Saskatchewan ore zone strikes slightly south of East, from the Alberta border to Manitoba; and dips to the South. The conventional mines are located along a broad strike line from Saskatoon to Esterhazy-Rocanville. Nine conventional mines have developed ore bodies at a nominal depth of 915 metres (3000 ft.). One mine had developed an ore body at 1525 metres (5000 ft.) by solution mining. Mining reserves of 100 years are not unusual in this vast ore body. Most of the mines were brought on stream during the 1960s. All the conventional mines were influenced by practices developed at Carlsbad, N.M. By 1970, the industry was faced with serious over-capacity resulting in the cancellation of some projects and the introduction, by the provincial government, of the Potash Pro-rationing Regulations designed to share the available market amongst all the producers. This resulted in production rates as low as 40% of capacity. As a result, the 1970s were characterized by attempts to reduce cost, rather than improve production or processing techniques. In recent years, the plants have all been brought to full capacity, and are currently involved in a massive program of expansion, which promises a period of advancing technology.

In the plant where the 800m diameter cyclone was tested, 500 STPH of 50m x 0 raw coal was pulped in a heavy medium tank and pumped originally to four 700mm heavy medium cyclones. For the test one of these units was replaced by an 800mm diameter cyclone with the subsequent feed pressure for both units sets at approximately 15.0 psi. Since this was a feed to zero plant, an appropriate bleed of heavy medium to the dilute medium circuit was established to en- sure that the cleaning of the 500m x 0.5mm raw coal would not be adversely affected by high levels of 0.5mm x 0 fine coal present in the heavy medium. The medium gravity measured varied between 1.41 and 1.43. During a three-hour test on June 10, 1983, the raw coal sample was collected from the feed belt while the clean coal and refuse samples were collected separately at proper locations along the product streams of the two different diameter cyclones. All of these samples were shipped to the laboratory for screen and sink- float analyses. The raw coal screen and ash analyses are shown in Table 1.

Since the beginning of the computing age, technical software packages have not been developed to address only programming specialists but have been dedicated to process engineers. For process analysis, BRGM is developing and commercializing three packages: ? sampling software: ECHANT 2.0 for Windows ? material balance calculation: BILCO 2.0 for Windows ? steady-state simulator for plant design, adaptation and optimization: USIM PAC 2.1 for Windows This paper deals in a first part with the main features of these three packages. In a second part, advanced models are presented for SAG/ AG mills and flotation columns. An industrial case of application is shown for each of them.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

I have been asked by the Society of Mining Engineers to present a paper on Inco Limited&apos;s Indonesian nickel project as a case study in the financing of large overseas mining projects. I welcome this opportunity It is a story worth telling not only because the project itself represents a significant human achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. The paper will be divided into four sections: (i) a brief history of the project, (ii) a critical appraisal of the project&apos;s financing plan in terms of the goals that we sought to achieve, (iii) some comments on certain factors underlying the relative success of the financing plan, and (iv) the contributions that the engineering staffs must make to a successful financing plan. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Limited has been asked to submit a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979.

Blasting in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground is an increasing common challenge for surface and underground mines. Many current PETN based non-electric and electronic detonators have manufacturer published in-hole temperature limits ranging from 55°C to 65°C (131°F to 150°F). When confronting blasthole temperatures above the manufacturer published limits, operations may request site-specific guidance and qualification for use. The advised safe loading window for in-hole PETN based detonators is often too short to be practicable for production blasting. To overcome limitations of PETN based initiation systems, surface mines with high temperature ground and/or reactive ground are known to load blastholes with a qualified high temperature bulk emulsion that are top primed with a cartridge of temperature qualified detonator sensitive emulsion plus an RDX detonating cord downline. As there is no in-hole delay detonator in this system, blasthole timing is accomplished with surface delays. Although this system is safe, top priming and surface delaying does influence floor quality and top size fragmentation, and safe loading windows times reduce blast block size and increase blasting frequency. A mining company with a site characterized by geothermally high temperature ground plus highly reactive ground employed a blasting system like the one described above. The site desires to improve blasting performance by moving to an in-hole delay initiation system that can withstand the site ground conditions. At the request of the mining house, DynaEnergetics developed an electronic initiation system for application in geothermally high temperature ground and/or extremely reactive ground conditions. The DynaEnergetics IGNEO high temperature electronic initiation system is rated for in-hole use in ground up to 150°C (302°F) for 48 hours. The detonator consists of a high strength detonator with an HMX base charge and thermally resistant downline. To make up a primer, the detonator is inserted into a booster charge assembly that is fitted with a small HMX shape charge. This high energy primer is designed to be compatible and reliable for firing bulk emulsions, including those with high percentages of urea inhibition to combat reactive ground. Up to 1000 detonators may be programmed in 1 ms increments up to 1500 ms. The system is controlled by a digital firing panel that can be used with either a wired or wireless trigger. The system enables high temperature and/or reactive ground sites to utilize in-hole delay initiation and realize the associated performance benefits.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.

INTRODUCTION Chuquicamata mine is a large copper open pit located in the north of Chile. It has been in production for more than 80 years and now is in the later stages of its life with declining grades and increasing haul distances. As any old mine with long established organizations and procedures, it has faced one of the most difficult managerial problems: to conduct changes. Since 1994, the new management team has been devoted to a modernization pro- gram focused mainly in restructuring business operations. downsizing the labor force and introducing a mine planning pro- cess consistent with the company&apos;s goal. The explicit identification of the latter issue has been made because of the management’s conviction about the importance of it in the profitability of the business. The mine planning process at Chuquicamata mine has evolved from an old manual technique towards a modern computarized system, however the fundamental aspects and the procedures involved in this process have been the same. For in- stance, the cutoff grades policy has not changed during the last said 20 years, regardless of the changes to grade distribution, commodity prices, plant capacities, etc. To review and rethink this process, the strategy was to work with a small group of inside engineers and the management in order to interact with several mining consulting firms. The idea was to open a discussion about the fundamental principles used in the mine planning activities and, at the same time, to explore new ideas to improve the operating practices that have been followed for a long time. Thus, the goal of this paper is to present the mine planning approach that was the result of this work and the improvements that were obtained. THE CHUQUICAMATA MINE The Chuquicamata division is one of the five operations of Codelco and is currently devoted to operating the Chuquicamata mine; a copper open pit, concentrator, smelting and refining complex. It also operates Mina Sur which consists of an open pit mine, a leaching-solvent extraction and electrowinning process. There is also a dump leaching and a Sx-Ew plant for treating the low grade suifide ore (under the cutoff grade) from the Chuquicamata mine. Prior to reviewing the mine planning process, capacities for the Chuquicamata sulfide line were 640 000 tpd of run of mine material, 160 000 tpd of ore and 4 200 tpd of concentrate. This meant a total annual movement of around 230 Mt in the mine and a treatment of 57 Mt in the concentrator with a stripping ratio of approximately 3: 1. The old exploitation strategy consisted of an "open scheme", which means that all benches must have a berm with enough space to allow the traffic of large haulage trucks. This fact implied working with a great flexibility, but the consequences were flat slope angles. One of the reasons for using this operating practice in short term planning was that the grade consistency from the pit has always been a controversial variable. Schedules were designed to meet grade targets accurately and they were modified immediately when deviations become apparent. This reality led to working with a great deal of independent pushbacks and it required flexibility in the traffic system. The cutoff grade policy has been the same for a long time and the figure was 0.5 %CUT either for sulfide or oxide ore. This was the reason why a balance was produced between the mine and the concentrator. The mine is operated principally with benches of 26 m but in the upper part of the pit there are benches of 24 and 30 m. The main production equipment is shovels of 28 and 34 yd3 along with trucks of 200 and 240 st. Regarding the crushing facilities, there are two main systems located inside the pit and an old one in the periphery, close to a stockpile and near the concentrator. In the north part of the pit there is a crusher for waste material and in the north-east area is located the ore crusher facility. Both restrict a significant area of the pit and the mine sequence is considering to move the ore crusher again to the south-east sector where it used to be located. Relating to the waste crusher, the idea is to move it up to a bench near the surface in order to use the same conveyor belt and, at the same time, liberate an important sector. THE MINE PLANNING PROCESS The objective of the mine planning process is to develop a mine plan for the life of the deposit, in harmony and consistent with the company&apos;s goal. It includes the origin and destiny of tonnages and grades from the mine(s), along with the necessary resources to carry out this plan such as: fleet requirement, consumable goods, manpower, etc. From the financial point of view, it means to establish the cash flow for each time period of the mine life. That is. the revenue, capital investment and operating cost associated with each period of the plan. The fundamental principles involved in the mine planning pro- cess have been a controversial issue for a long time. One of the reasons for these divergent views could be produced by the difficulty of modeling a complete extraction policy for a geological re- source. This particular problem has to deal with several decision variables that are time dependent. So far, there is no mathematical formulation for managing such a problem, and the approach to solve it is based on a circular analysis combined with certain heuristic tools. So, a global model rather than a formula, requires a clear understanding of mine operations as well as economic theory and its application to a non-renewable resource. In order to manage this complex problem, the mine planning process can be conveniently split off in three stages which are conceptual, feasibility and operational planning. The characteristics of each stage are basically the timeliness in which they are developed and the kind and number of variables involved. White Pine Copper Company, a subsidiary of Copper Range Company located in Michigan&apos;s Upper Peninsula, mines a Precambrian sedimentary deposit containing finely disseminated chalcocite, native cop- per and native silver. Silver occurs predominately in certain strata and presently provides a mill head averaging 0.25 ounces per ton. This technical publication traces the development of silver recovery at White Fine beginning in early 1961. White Pine refined copper contains an excess of silver over and above that required to impart Lake Copper properties. The copper does not require electrolytic refining to meet industry purity requirements, nor is there sufficient silver to justify electrolysis.

Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Sometimes standing supports are used as a tool to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for different types of standing supports (steel and timber) to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. In this paper, the mine roof simulator (MRS), at the NIOSH Pittsburgh research facility, was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. To justify the testing program for testing standing supports with end-conditions of rock-like materials, the verified prop models were used to study the effect of a wide range of roof and floor materials (gray shale, shale, and claystone) on the critical buckling loads of the steel props. Also, several lateral loading scenarios were evaluated in which the steel props were laterally loaded at different heights. The critical buckling load for steel props setting up against a claystone roof and floor was found to be one-half of that shown by the MRS test where roof and floor platens are made of steel. Minimum prop performance was observed when the lateral load was applied at the mid-height of the steel prop, especially at small lateral displacement (less than 2 in).
