For the last four years, the Kilborn Group of Companies has been involved in several major projects in the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). These include the Kumtor project, the Kubaka gold project, the Kazgold project, the Aginskoe project and the Jerooy project. These projects are all in various stages of detailed engineering and construction. Western mining companies are pursuing mining opportunities throughout the world in search of ore bodies for development. The quest for profitable mining ventures has led mining companies to South America and Asia and, more recently, to the former Soviet Union. When considering the CIS, several factors should be considered. The most notable are geography, mining culture and previous mining production.

"The issue of mine worker fatigue is as complex as it is understudied. Generally, worker fatigue lies somewhere on a continuum between psychology and physiology, which makes the measurement and management of it difficult with no easy solutions for operators or workers. Answers to even basic questions remain elusive—such as what is fatigue, how is it measured, and how can organizational resources reduce fatigue—and answers seem to present no single, clear path to action for the health and safety of the worker. This manuscript supplements the growing body of interest in the problems of fatigue in the mining industry by reviewing some of what is known about worker fatigue in general and in the mining industry in particular. The material covered here includes basic topics of the hows and whys of worker fatigue; an overview of fatigue models, findings, and evidence-based solutions with a focus on mining; and potential future directions aimed at mitigating miner fatigue. INTRODUCTION “It is recommended that the whole fatigue test problem be stated in a form the nature of which may be indicated by the following suggestions: that the term fatigue be absolutely banished from precise scientific discussion, and consequently that attempts to obtain a fatigue test be abandoned [emphasis added].” – Bernard Muscio, Pioneer Australian Philosopher and Industrial Psychologist, in a 1921 Report to the Cambridge Industrial Fatigue Research Board Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work, or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetative duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising. On the one hand, mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation, and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a “cookie-cutter” approach. On the other hand, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present alltogether. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining."

Resource Engineering and Development, Inc. is designing and building a portable 150 to 225 TPD, flotation-cyanide leach plant with unitized, skid-mounted components. This plant design, with its portability, low capital investment, and high recovery of silver and gold from many partially oxidized ores, is well suited to treat many small, high-grade deposits, old waste dumps, and old mill tailing piles. A description is given of flotation and/or cyanide leach tests run on about 17 partially oxidized, newly mined ores; waste dump materials; placer slimes; and old mill tailings.

The U.S. Department of Energy has undertaken, in a cost sharing partnership with industry and utilities, an extensive coal-oil mixture (COM) combustion program in a number of promising applications. One of these is the injection of COM through tuyeres into a blast furnace in lieu of oil. From work done previously, it has been established that COM can be burned in existing oil, fired facilities. The issues being addressed by the current DOE program are: 1) determination of best available technology to achieve environmentally acceptable operation, and 2) determination of applications for which COM can be utilized economically.

J.R. Sturgul Thompson and Adler (1988) present a new simulator for use in designing conveyor belt systems for underground mines. Their model uses a large Fortran program to do a Monte Carlo simulation. Their approach is similar to that done by other researchers, such as Stanford (1965) and Newhart (1977). All Fortran based simulation models use an imaginary clock that is advanced a time increment. At each advance of time increment the program has to determine what is to take place in the system. Since many things can take place at different places in the system, this approach requires that a large amount of logic is needed at each step of the program. This, then, necessitates a great amount of jumping between different portions of the program. In fact, the Fortran program, CMBCS, takes up to 15 to 20 minutes to run on the mainframe and several hours for the PC. Such execution times are typical of Fortran based simulation studies. There have been other examples of Fortran based simulation studies in mining. Cross and Williamson (1969) presented a model of a working open-pit copper mine. Fosinato (1982) presented a model of the bucketwheel excavators for the large open-pit mines in Southern Victoria in Australia. These excavators discharge into a complex conveyor system, which can be thought of as being similar, but more complicated than the one modeled by CMBCS. All previous simulation studies using Fortran as the source code have several things in common: they all are very lengthy, often being of the order of 10,000 lines of code and take a great deal of CPU time to execute. The program of Fosinato takes more than 4.5 hours to run on a large mainframe. Also not mentioned by Thompson and Adler is the actual time it took to write the Fortran code. This, too, can be considerable, as Fosinato's program took several man years to write and de-bug. In order to change it, as the parameters change or as the mine increases, further large amount of time is needed. An alternate to such Fortran based programs is provided by using a special computer language known as General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS). This language is designed to solve a wide variety of discrete event simulation problems and appears to be particularly suited for mining situations as shown by Sturgul and Yi (1987). Although GPSS was introduced as far back as 1961, it has not been used in mining to any great extent. However, the original form was quite crude and inefficient compared to modern versions. Perhaps with the increasing popularity and availability of these recent versions, this will change. Two such versions are GPSS/H for the mainframe and GPSS/PC for the personal computer. GPSS/H allows for interactive usage, such as allowing input data to be entered via a menu. GPSS/PC has excellent graphical capabilities and one can actually view the simulation in progress. In addition, one can halt the simulation and change values of various parameters. If a particular portion of the simulation is in progress via a concept known as "microwindows." These new versions have greatly increased the potential for using the language for mining situations. Mining applications of GPSS have been given by Sturgul and Yi (1987), Sturgul and Harrison (1987), Sturgul (1987), and Sturgul and Singhal (1988). Schriber (1987) presents a summary of the recent advances in GPSS.

Tailings are made of ground rock that is left over from removing valuable minerals. The tailings are usually fine particles that cause environmental issues for storage and disposal. Disposal of tailings is a growing concern, as more tailings are produced from the increasing demand for mined material (ITRC, 2008). This project proposes a way to convert the mine waste to a useful product. Tailings were selected from a South Carolina crushed stone quarry, the products of which are used for road beds, sidewalks, asphalt and driveways. These tailings were processed to generate synthetic aggregates for construction applications. The synthetic aggregate creates a product that could be used for many purposes, including aggregate for sidewalks, driveways, roads and building materials. Testing methods followed the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) guidelines for physical testing of coarse natural aggregate, which are sieve analysis, Los Angeles abrasion, absorption, specific gravity and soundness test. The synthetic aggregate produced passed all tests for NCDOT and, in some instances, rated better than a natural aggregate. Using the tailings from the crushed stone and mining industry would convert the waste into a valuable, marketable product.

The objective of this research was to conduct field-scale experiments at an operating surface coal mine in order to determine the impact of the bucket fill factor on dragline production rate and energy consumption. Data collected from a dragline monitoring system were recorded in a specifically designed software tool and the relationship among these parameters was established. an algorithm for the determination of the ?best? fill factor was developed and integrated in the software. It was determined for the analyzed dragline in the mine that energy consumption in the digging phase can be reduced by 36% and production rate can be increased by 1.4% for a bucket fill factor of about 80%, a fill distance of 19.8 m (65 ft) (i.e., 3.1 bucket lengths) and a bucket fill time of 15 sec. the method developed and applied in this study may help dragline operators to determine the fill factor that will increase production rates and reduce energy consumption in specific surface coal mines. Rosario Dominicana, S. A. operates an 8,500 tonne per dayopen pit gold/silver mine in the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The mine is located in an agricultural area which is also an earthquake and heavy rainfall zone. In the 64 years from 1910 to 1974 there were 19 earthquakes within 300 km of the mine in the range of 6 to 8 on the Richter scale and the most recent earthquake in this range occurred in March, 1979. Average annual rainfall in the area is 1.7 m and is distributed throughout the year. Safe and environmentally sound tailings disposal in such conditIons has demanded the buiIding of an extremely strong dam wall and use of a fail-safe system of tailings disposal and solution reclaim. The type of dam, the system of tailings disposal and solution reclaim comprise an interesting example of the manner of handling tailings for a medium tonnage mine. The system is relatively costly but does assure a long-term, safe and trouble free structure and operating system. General views of the dam wall and tailings pond are shown in Figures l through 4.

The challenge of mining coal seams having a pitch of 30 degrees is one not frequently found in the United States, due primarily to the scarcity of such deposits. However, in the Thompson Creek District in Pitkin, Colorado, such a challenge exists to produce high quality medium volatile coking coal, and development of a longwall system is underway. The deposits under consideration are those of the Anschutz Corporation Inc. of Denver, Colorado, which are not in a virgin state. The properties were originally mined by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation from 1894-1907, and by the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. from 1953-1966. Approximately five and one half million tons of coal have been mined by the above companies, attesting to its quality. The cessation of operations in both instances was occasioned by economics. Both companies employed a room and pillar system of mining, but being denied the use of high capacity mining and loading machinery because of the excessive pitch of the coal seam. This resulted in an unfavorable productivity expressed as output per man-shift, and thus the high cost of production occasioned by hand loading and semi-mechanization dictated cessation of operations. The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota will house four large detector tanks located in deep underground caverns. Construction of the supporting infrastructure required for this project is no complete including installation of a waste rock conveyance system and drill and blast excavation of several supporting drifts and chambers. This paper will discuss the design and construction of these pre-excavation and early works elements, and the overall project schedule as it closes in on commencement of cavern excavation activities.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

"A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

Mining corporations have spread their operations worldwide in the last few decades. The reason behind widening operations geographically can be seen as it being part of a risk diversification strategy. Given that the technical, financial and social risks are high, favorable deposits, taxation regimes and legislative frameworks create incentives for international mining operations. On the other hand, international mining activities add the risks of permitting, investing, operating and decommissioning to the corporations. These risks could emerge from defaulting, corruption, resource nationalism, social license to operate, and political and legislative uncertainties and instabilities.

As the world progresses toward the renewable energy transition, the demand for minerals increases exponentially. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) 2021 Net Zero by 2050 Report, critical mineral production needs to grow six times to combat climate change. It’s estimated that four to seven percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from the mining sector’s Scope 1 and 2 (direct and indirect) emissions. Including Scope 3 (upstream, downstream, and embedded) emissions, the sector accounts for 28% of global GHG emissions. In a typical mining operation, diesel fuel is the biggest source of direct GHG emissions, and haulage is often the main source of diesel emissions. Large haul trucks have been the industry standard for over 50 years and offer flexibility, relatively low capital cost (especially with equipment lease options), and guaranteed technology with known maintenance. The challenge will be to justify their continued use when there are more economical options that lead to significant reductions in GHG emissions. The purpose of this study is to compare five haulage options in terms of GHG emissions, using the methodology defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scopes 1, 2, and 3 (Category 2). Additionally, this analysis compares operating and capital costs associated with the five haulage options (emerging and proven technologies): 1) Diesel-Electric Haul Trucks, 2) Battery-Electric Haul Trucks, 3) Fuel Cell Haul Trucks, 4) Railveyor, and 5) Conveyor. This analysis looks at the emissions and costs associated with operating the equipment (fuel and electricity), the embedded emissions and costs associated with the construction and installation of the equipment itself, and the associated infrastructure (roads, powerlines, and rail).

The dissolution process of phosphate rock from the Semikan area (Mardin-Mazidagi, Turkey) using dilute phosphoric acid has been investigated. The work involved studying the effect of important variables, such as reaction time, stirring speed, particle size fraction, phosphoric acid concentration and temperature. Van der Sluis et al.?s model was used to determine the rate of the partial dissolution of phosphate ore. Mass-transfer coefficients (kL) varied between 2.8 and 28.5.10-3 m.s-1. The activation energy of the process varied between 16 and 20 kJ.mol-1. It has been found that the dissolution process is controlled by calcium ion diffusion, rather than by chemical reaction.

Acceptable working environments in production areas and service openings of Mindola Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt are currently maintained with an air volume of 1000 cu m/s and 5500 kW of installed refrigeration plant. It is planned to open up additional deeper areas of the mine for future production. Temperature problems, due to the increased heat generation from various underground sources are recognized as potential hinderances to efficient production. Findings of research work indicate that the present total heat output of 58,000 kW will inevitably increase by the second five-year period of the deepening program to 52,900 kW and by the fifth five-year period to 63,200 k\V. Estimated WB and DB temperatures, representing the total heat generation in stope faces and development headings during these same periods are predicted to increase to 53.8/40.2 °C and 35.5/42.1 °C respectively. It is assessed that the nominal refrigeration capacity needs to be progressively increased to 9,000 k\V This paper deals with the thermal problems in Mindola Mine, current heat output calculations, future prediction of temperature and heat load in various working areas of the mine with the application of computer programs and interpretation of data in order to find the effective solution for long-term planning of ventilation and air-conditioning.

They envelope a diverse cross section of the mining industry and were selected for being visionaries, leaders, educators and ambassadors.In 2015, Frank F. Aplan, T S Ary, Ralph E. Bailey, John Campbell Greenway and Edward Steidle will join 227 other mining industry honorees when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. The Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award will go to the Powell River Project Research and Education Center, a partnership of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and the Appalachian coal mining industry.The 2015 annual induction banquet and ceremony will be the 28th such event and will be held this year in Pittsburgh, PA, on Oct. 23, 2015, in the Omni William Penn Hotel ballroom.2015 National Mining Hall of Fame inductees:Frank F. The study of the excavation of large spherical cavities in salt formations first became of interest in 1958 when it was recognized that a large cavity could be of value in the study of the detection or concealment of underground nuclear explosions. Previously unpublished studies are reported in this paper and other studies reviewed relating to the excavation of large cavities in salt by mining ad by solution. Special emphasis is placed on the utilization of the Tatum salt dome (about 22 miles southwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi) for the proposed site of a large excavated cavity. The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission has recently been studying such a cavity as Project Payette, but no details have yet been published. If Project Payette is determined feasible and work funded, it would eventually involve the firing of a nuclear explosive at the center of a large cavity.
