Mesh based areal support is commonly applied in South-African deep-level gold mines. It forms part of an integrated support system that can cater for both rockfall and rockburst incidents. The application has been successfully applied over many years. Operations have different geotechnical conditions and practical considerations, which has led to the development of various types of mesh and integrated mesh-based support systems (i.e. meshing and lacing versus welded or chain-link mesh sheets). Typically rolls or sheets of mesh is pinned with rockbolts to the surface of an exposed excavation. Applications vary from hangingwall coverage in a conventional stope gully to complete excavation coverage in footwall drives of conventional mines or on-reef drives in massive mechanised mines. It is however critical to understand the behaviour of the rockmass and apply suitable support systems.

Recent changes in the field of ore and bulk commodity handling has forced a reevaluation of previously conceived notions. When vessels were small, and sources of raw material were reasonably close to areas of need, the role of the shipping terminal was of secondary importance. Now terminals must be built to take advantage of the economic benefits of the supercarriers. The shipping rates of the 80's will not be determined by the 60,000 DWT or even 150,000 ton capacity bulk carrier, but rather by the supercarriers in the 250,000 DWT class or larger. When the Suez Canal was closed, the shipping industry took a hard look at the economics of the large bulk carrier. Naval architects overcame the problems and successfully designed large supertankers, which today are plying the seas in excess of 350,000 DWT. Orders have been placed for tankers of 480,000 DWT. The shippers of dry bulk materials are now coming to similar conclusions about the economics of supercarriers. As of today, over 40 orders have been placed for vessels in the 250,000 DWT class, representing an investment of over 11/2 billion dollars, and many more are being considered. These vessels are being designed as combination ore/oil (0/0) or ore/bulk/oil (OBO's) carriers. The oil industry has seen the need for terminals which can accommodate these supertankers. The dry bulk shippers, and particularly ore shippers, must now act.

The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. A current environmental concern is the cleanup and restoration of soil contaminated with low-level radionuclides at DOE sites including the Nevada Test Site. At the present, there is no applicable process to economically and effectively deal with the remediation of contaminated soils. This situation requires development of a selective flotation process to separate the radionuclides from contaminated soil efficiently and economically. In this study, a minus 200 mesh size fraction of pure cerium dioxide was used as a surrogate for plutonium oxide which is the major contaminant at the Nevada Test Site. A Hallimond flotation cell was utilized to examine the flotation behavior of cerium dioxide with oleic acid under various conditions of pH and collector concentration Mechanical cell tests were conducted to float the surrogate from a mixture with uncontaminated Nevada Test Site soil in the absence and presence of calcium carbonate as a carrier. Two different sizes of the carrier (minus 150 mesh and 65-150 mesh) were tested. It was found through the Hallimond cell flotation tests that the cerium dioxide could be floated well at pH's 4 and 9 with 10-3 molar oleic acid. It was also found that the addition of the carrier drastically enhanced the flotation recovery of cerium dioxide. The flotation recovery of the surrogate increased from 34 % to 65 % by adding only 0.5 % calcium carbonate (minus 150 mesh) in the feed and also increased to 95 % by adding 10 % of this carrier to the feed. The finer size fraction of calcium carbonate (minus 150 mesh) was more effective in recovering cerium dioxide than the coarser size fraction (65-150 mesh) The flotation method utilizing a carrier of calcium carbonate seems to provide a high potential to be used for the remediation of soil contaminated with radionuclides at various Department of Energy's nuclear weapon sites.

Public Service Company of Oklahoma began burning sub-bituminous coal in December, 1979. Initially PSO had a single source coal supply from Jacobs Ranch Mine, and in 1982 added deliveries from Clovis Point mine. Both are Powder River Basin (Wyoming) coal mines. In 1986 PSO began burning Oklahoma coal to meet Oklahoma's 10% native use law. PSO experienced random s lagging during certain blends of these coals. PSO installed a boiler performance system to help control the slagging problems from the various coal blends, to improve boiler efficiency, and increase total coal consumption.

Southern Ohio Coal Company (SOCCO) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have identified techniques to optimize the use of scrubbers on continuous miners. The techniques provide maximum respirable dust control while maintaining a high output. The use of radio remote control and scrubber help to achieve greater advance between lifts by locating the operator in fresh air during the mining cycle. He is also kept away from newly exposed roof, which is not supported. An alternative to fan-powered scrubber was also evaluated at SOCCO. A high-pressure water-powered scrubber system eliminated the noise associated with fans, and achieved an intrinsically safe system. Experience in the use of these scrubber systems and remote control at SOCCO are discussed.

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

In addition to developing various types of coal interface detection systems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is actively involved in developing a coal rib thickness monitoring system for high wall mining applications. One particular system that appears to show promise uses a ground-penetrating radar system to detect the coal-air boundaries of coal ribs. Based on preliminary laboratory and field tests, results indicate that this method can be applied successfully in highwall mines to maintain a constant rib thickness. The coal seam should be relatively clean in the vicinity of the antenna (e.g., have minimal partings or dirt bands) for best results.

During the cyanide leaching process, gold and silver ores that come from the transition zones, which typically contains low levels of sulfide, may produce one or more of the following reduced sulfur species: sulfide ( HS−), polysulfides ( Sn 2−), thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−), pentathionate ( S5O6 2−), hexathionate ( S6O6 2−). The actual speciation of the reduced sulfur species in the circuits will primarily depend on the redox potential, pH, cyanide levels, and existing sulfur species in recycled process water, as well as the presence of other reactive metal species. The development of an accurate analytical method for sulfur species in cyanide leaching units of gold ores where sulfur speciation occurs has an important role in explaining the metal recovery deviations. This study presents the speciation of sulfur species and the development of ion chromatography method to analyze reduced sulfur species thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−) in cyanide leaching circuits for gold ores. The method developed has resulted in precise quantification of target sulfur species in leach solutions. Method development and validation results were illustrated on analytical graphs containing each species’ peak number, retention time (min), type, width (min), area (mAU*s), height (mAU), and area distribution (%) of the peak.

Recently there has been much discussion of the use of pipelines for the long-distance transportation of solids. Many have come to recognize the economies inherent in pipeline transportation. The widespread movement of oil and gas at astonishingly low costs - a gallon of oil moves from Montana to New York for less than that for the delivery of a postcard - has spurred others to sturdy this mode of transportation. Most interested people are aware of the inherent advantages of pipelines - continuity and reliability of operations - low manpower requirements per ton mile - moderate capital costs per ton mile - low maintenance costs per ton mile - low operating costs per ton mile.

As development in underground coal mines progresses away from the critical components of the ventilation system, including the main fans and ventilation shafts, resistance within the system is markedly increased. This results in higher pressure and flow requirements from the main fan(s) to maintain adequate face ventilation. Upgrades to the primary ventilation system are often required. The use of booster fans underground is a potentially practical alternative to the addition of shafts and surface fans. This study presents simulations of the use of booster fans in two underground ventilation scenarios, one longwall and one room-and-pillar. The booster fan effects on the power requirements of the ventilation systems are evaluated.

Elemental sulfur is founded to be the predominant sulfur-containing species in a leaching residue resulting from ferric chloride leaching, under given conditions, of a chalcopyrite concentrate. The mineralogical study of the leaching residue which consists of 52% elemental sulfur reveals that the sulfur formed at the end of leaching process is in the form of discrete crystal rather than coating film. Flotation has been applied to recover the sulfur successfully using xanthate as a collector. Dispersants arc needed to prevent the mechanical entrapment of silicate and quartz by sulfur. Very high recovery of sulfur with satisfactory grades can be achieved with a relatively simple notation scheme.

The presence of appreciable quantity of clay mineral in Indian hematite ore needs an attrition technique using screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit to remove the ultrafine clays and avoid downstream operational problems. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that iron ore samples obtained from the Barbil region of Odisha contain a high amount of silica and alumina in the form of clay minerals (e.g., kaolinite) contributed as a loss on ignition (LOI) in the iron-making process. Iron ore fines of below 10 mm size were subjected to a laboratory-scale screw scrubber, and the effectiveness of scrubbing as well as the pelletization of the scrubbed product was investigated. The screw scrubber in the beneficiation circuit helps to remove the clay minerals, causes an increase in iron values from 63.65% Fe(T) to 66.18%Fe(T), with improved physical (CCS of 325 kg/pellet) and metallurgical (RDI of 2.24%) pellet properties.

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. Based on XRD results from the literature (Landis, 1971) that are calibrated to metamorphic facies, results from our samples correspond to pumpellyite-actinolite to lowermost greenschist facies conditions, probably

Operating and maintaining the heavy equipment used in open-pit mining operations is an ongoing challenge for mines. Typical operations employ a combination of shovels, wheel loaders, and haul trucks to excavate and transport the material for further processing. As this is the first point of contact for the material after blasting, it is often a bottleneck of all downstream processes, thus, equipment uptime and efficiency is crucial. Automated systems for bucket tooth monitoring, payload measurement, proximity detection, and rock fragmentation analysis will be examined. The impact of these systems on operation safety, efficiency, and reliability, in real-world scenarios will be investigated. The process of managing all the above fleet of equipment in a mine can be streamlined by connecting the equipment monitoring systems to a central server. Using the central server, the distribution of this information can be automated to ensure that the right people see the data in a timely manner, improving both proactive and reactive responses to threats to safety and productivity.

Traditional interpretations of vein ore deposits in the Coeur d' Alene Mining District, such as the view that these deposits formed in a transcurrent tectonic regime during the Precambrian, are being supplanted by the view that the deposits (1) formed in low-grade metamorphic shear zones similar to those that host an important type of gold deposit, (2) display features, such as wall rock carbonate zoning and vein zoning, that are common to ore deposits elsewhere, and (3) are probably Mesozoic and possibly related to emplacement of the Idaho batholith. In recent years, new interpretations have led to major ore discoveries that are likely to extend the life of the district for decades.
