Chlorination and carbochlorination processes have industrial applications in metallurgical activity for extraction and purification of uncommon metals such as rare earth elements (REE). This study reviews the chlorination and carbochlorination reactions of light REE (LREE) oxides with chlorine considering the thermodynamic, stoichiometric, and kinetic aspects of the reactions. Lanthanides between lanthanum to gadolinium were considered as LREE, in agreement with previous literature, and the results were detailed in this review. LREE were analyzed taking into account their oxidation states and were divided into three groups accordingly. The results presented show that, although the LREE are chemically similar, their behaviors during the reactions with Cl2 and Cl2–C, and the different LREE-O–Cl compounds formed, have particularities. It was observed that gadolinium, in both thermodynamic calculations and experimental results, presents some differences, and it can be considered intermediate between light and heavy REE; i.e., reactions between LREE2O3 and Cl2(g) begin at approximately 250 °C, except for Gd2O3 that begins at 327 °C. The present work will contribute to a better understanding of the chemistry of LREE oxides and Cl2 under different conditions and the products obtained in the LREE–O––Cl2(g) and LREE–O–C–Cl2(g) systems.

The USBH Mining Systems and Ground Control Generic Research Center funded a project leading to the improved planning of airflow and refrigeration in underground mines experiencing hot working conditions. The project was broken down into approximately five phases: 1. Visiting some of the known hot mines in the U.S. and sending out a questionnaire to determine other mines which might be experiencing hot working conditions in the future. 2. Choosing two mines in which to conduct measurements to determine the insitu rock thermal conductivity and diffusivity, and comparing these values with laboratory determined values. 3. Investigating computer programs available for mine climate simulation, and testing these programs with case study examples from the two mines where the rock thermal properties were measured. 4. Considering improved ways of estimating the wetness factor and experimenting with the use of heat flux meters to more directly measure the rock heat inflow into the airstream. 5. Applying the results of these investigations to simulating the climate for future mine development and production areas at the two- mines. The project is approximately two thirds completed. At the time of writing, the insitu measurements at one of the mines are still being recorded. This paper will be describing the procedures and results of the insitu rock thermal property measurements, and give a brief description of some of the simulated results obtained for a mechanised cut and fill stope case study from the Homestake Gold Hine in South Dakota.

As a followup to a USBM-sponsored research project, the authors utilized the knowledge-base structure and system concepts from a Sun Sparcstation-based worker-scheduling system of the mine-management support system to develop a PC-based application. The new software adopts the nested-window concept to facilitate data collection and modification on personnel, including their availability and work priorities during a shift. The system can optimally allocate manpower on a work shift and can delineate supervisory training responsibilities. The various components of the software, including enhancements made to the original system, are described in detail.

We look at the empirical evidence of coal block auctions in India to understand how competitive intensity affects the bid amounts in common value auctions. The results suggest that competitive intensity measured through the number of bidders for a coal block is instrumental in determining the bidding outcomes. The presence of higher numbers of bidders in the auction leads to higher bids - every additional bidder causes the bid amount to rise by INR 142.67 per tonne of coal for auctions studied for 127 coal blocks from 2014 to 2023. The paper also examines the moderating and mediating effect of competition on bids and on excess of bids from the comparative market price of coal from alternative source of Coal India Limited. The results indicate that competitive intensity does not have statistically significant impact on the relationship between common value of coal blocks and bids, neither as a moderator nor as a mediator. The strategic behavior of the bidders has also been observed as bidders have been seen to bid in a higher than market price in order to outbid the competitors.

The quality of water in mine pit lakes depends in part on the physical limnology (Le. stratification, turnover, and development of anoxic conditions with depth) of the lake. Limnologic data collected from four existing pit lakes indicate that pit lakes develop a thermocline, or temperature stratification, in the upper 10m to 30 m of the water column. Two of the pit lakes (26 m and 55 m deep) undergo seasonal turnover of the entire water column, whereas two deeper pit lakes (110 m and 240 m) undergo seasonal turnover of only the upper portion of the water column. In the deeper lakes, seasonal mixing does not extend through the entire water column and a distinct chemocline develops with depth.

Gold and silver often occur finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite. The use of biological leaching to dissolve pyrite and liberate gold has been extensively studied for a concentrate from the Porgera deposit, Papua New Guinea. The successful operation of a continuous bioleach circuit has been demonstrated. Bioleach residues were cyanide leached to extract gold and silver, and unreacted pyrite recovered for recycle to the bioleach. A 26 day steady state continuous bioleach test on a concentrate assaying 14.3 g/tonne Au and 87.0 g/tonne Ag produced residues with an average 73.5% weight loss and a pyrite oxidation of 88%. Cyanidation and recovery of pyrite from the cyanide residues for recycle gave overall recoveries of 92.1% gold and 74.6% silver. A proportion of the remaining precious metals was found in the bioleach solutions and may be recoverable. Losses to tails were 3.0% gold and 8.1% silver. Final tails represented 14.3% of the feed weight and averaged 1.84 g/tonne Au. A description of the continuous bioleach circuit and bioleach residue handling procedures, and the results of the study are presented. The features and advantages of biological oxidation as a pretreatment for refractory precious metal ores and concentrates are discussed.

Through the USGS National Coal Availability pro-gram, two San Juan Basin studies have been completed. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field, Fruitland Formation and in the eastern Standing Rock field, Menefee Formation. Original resources are 4.66 Gt and 3.46 Gt (5.14 billion stand 3.82 billion st), respectively, in the Bisti and Standing Rock areas. Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Na-Zin wilderness area (1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st)). Technological restrictions remove 31% from Standing Rock original resource. Available resources are 60% (2.79 Gt(3.07 billion st)) of the Bisti original resource and66% (2.26 Gt (2.49 billion st)) of the original Standing Rock resource.

Elevation of surface charge density on colloidal particles in the presence of a high potential electrostatic field is demonstrated as a viable technique for preventing the accumulation of solids in solvent extraction circuits. The effect of the technique is manifest by relative turbidity measurements between pregnant leach solution and raffinate, by changes in the character of the sludge accumulations, by alteration of the zeta potential of particulates, and by a general reduction in the mass of solids.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Cat 994 class) as primary loading equipment in open pit iron ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Data were gathered on loader selection rationale; operating and maintenance experience; and production, availability, and cost information. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. The paper summarizes the field data and includes economic comparisons of wheel loaders versus cable shovels in an iron ore application.

The Republic of South Africa is a heterogeneous mixture of Black Africans, Afrikaans, British, Indians, Malayans, French Huguenots, and many others from Europe and Asia. A decisive date in its recent history is the collapse of the Apartheid Regime in 1994. For a metallurgist, South Africa is the country of diamonds, gold, platinum, and many other metals. In 1887 Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) was able to take control of the De Beers Mining Company after the discovery of diamonds at Kimberly in 1866. It was there where the so-called School of Mines was inaugurated in 1896.

The evolution of pit lake water quality depends on the lithology and hydrologic characteristics of the ultimate pit surface, the availability of buffering capacity in the wall rock vs. oxidizable sulfide content, the alkalinity of recharging groundwater and the evapo-concentrative characteristics of the system. This paper assesses the geochemistry of 11 existing pit lakes, ranging from the acid Red Hill and Berkeley pit lakes (pH 2.6 to 2.8) to the alkaline Yerington pit lake (pH 8.45). Predicted pit lake chemistry is similar to that in existing pits, with long-term chemistry lying on a geochemical continuum between end members that consist of influent calcium bicarbonate groundwater and naturally occurring sulfate-rich evaporite playa lakes.

Hedges Gold Pty. Ltd. mines and processes a lateritic gold orebody approximately 120 km south east of Perth in the Darling plateau. The operation is approximately 26 km from the town of Boddington and 31 km from the town of Dwellingup. Hedges operates under The Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, Licence Number 3183. Presently, nine Limitations and Conditions are applicable to the tailings dam. These conditions apply to maximum discharge/disposal quantity permitted. Hedges mine is located in state Forest within the eastern, low rainfall section of the Darling Range and within the waler catchment area of the Murray River. Ore is carted by 120 tonne haulpacks to the plant. The plant and tailings dam is on private farm land some six kms from the mine.

BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson's Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. INTRODUCTION LKAB was formed at the turn of the century when the railways between the ore fields and harbors were built. The mines are situated north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Kiirunavaara is the largest mine, with a pro¬duction capacity of approximately 30 Mt/a. Malm¬berget has a capacity of about 12 Mt/ a. Both are under¬ground mines. Svappavaara, the only opencast mine currently in operation, has a capacity of about 4.5 Mt/a. The ore harbors are at Narvik for the Kiruna and Svappavaara mines and at Lulea for the Malmberget mine (see Fig. 1). Production in the form of finished products is shown in Fig. 2a, b, c, and d. Due to poor ore markets in re¬cent years, production and shipments have been cut back, but there was a positive swing in 1978. LKAB has been 96% state-owned since 1957. In addition to the iron mines in northern Sweden, LKAB has subsidiaries in central Sweden which produce sulfide ores, quartz sand, and uranium (Fig. 3). The mining methods employed are opencast bench stoping at Svappavaara and sublevel caving at Kiirunavaara and Malmberget. GEOLOGY The Kiirunavaara ore body is 4000 m long and av¬erages about 90 m wide, with variations in width from a few meters to around 150 m. The ore has been ex¬plored by deep drilling down to about 1000 m, but mag¬netic measurements indicate a depth of at least 1500 m. The Kiirunavaara ore is oriented in a north-northeasterly direction with a number of ores in the boundaries be¬tween the wall rock types. The ore in Kiirunavaara is mainly a fine-grained magnetite with a varying content of fine-grained apatite. The apatite content of the ore decreases with increasing depth. The other ores are all apatite-bearing and a couple are hematite ores (Fig. 4a, b). The ores are sedimentary, tilted, and tectonically de¬formed. They have a lateral dip of 0.87 to 1.2 rad (50 to 70°). The contacts between ore and wall rock are distinct and sharp, but both the hanging wall and the footwall are brecciated and impregnated with magnetite. The footwall of the Kiirunavaara ore consists of syenite porphyry with a low quartz content and rela¬tively good strength; the hanging wall consists of quartz porphyry. Both types are known as Kiruna porphyries. The ore at the boundary with the hanging wall is often rich in kaolin. There are a few veins of syenite porphyry running through the ore, which has a few major faults (Fig. 4c, d). There are two sharply delineated ore grades in Kiirunavaara: low phosphorus ore with less than 0.1 % phosphorus (about one-third of the ore) and high phos¬phorus ore with greater than 0.5% phosphorus. The iron content is 67% in the low phosphorus ore and 60% in the high phosphorus ore. These ore types are sold as different grades and so are kept separate during mining. Exiting WW2, the potential of nitrates and hydrogen peroxide for application as industrial explosives both became known. The technology stream advanced the development and uptake of nitrate-based explosives to the point that they are the current global standard for blasting. Recently environmental issues are influencing the strategic agenda of extractive industries. The mid-2010s saw renewed interest in hydrogen peroxide explosives to eliminate NOx fume. Carbon reduction initiatives in the 2020s provided additional impetus to investigate hydrogen peroxide-based explosives. Hypex Bio is at the forefront of developing and delivering bulk gas sensitized Hydrogen Peroxide Emulsion (HPE) for blasting. HPE consists of hydrogen peroxide along with smaller amounts of fuel and emulsifier. The consistency of HPE is similar to industry- standard nitrate-based emulsions. It is compatible with existing priming and initiation systems. HPE does not contain nitrates and thereby does not produce post blast nitrous oxide fumes nor discharge of nitrates or ammonia to mine water. Importantly, HPE contributes to reduction in total carbon emissions as compared to nitrate-based explosives.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.

The importance of metallurgical information in reaching appropriate decisions during the development of mining projects is demonstrated. A financial analysis is calculated using a simulation that includes random number generators. The results are compared to the results of a traditional sensitivity analysis. The traditional analysis is shown to have the potential to overestimate the value of mining projects. The type of statistical distribution selected for the random number generator affects the results significantly. The statistical method of analysis provides insight into the amount of metallurgical testing to be completed and verification of how representative the samples are.

The abstract highlights the importance of determining the optimum line of extraction in continuous miner workings for improved safety and productivity. The study investigates three extraction techniques (diagonal, straight line along strike, and straight line along dip-rise) using 3D numerical modeling. The dip-rise extraction technique is found to be optimal due to lower stress and displacement, leading to a higher safety factor. The research also develops a continuous miner stability index (CMSI) to predict working face stability based on mining depth and pillar width-to-height ratio.

Gold-bearing outcrops were discovered in 1862 by Union soldiers garrisoned at Needles, CA, near the northwest corner of the future State of Arizona. Sporadic mining began several years later, but engineered shaft sinking and mill construction were not adopted at Oatman and the neighboring camp of Goldroad until about 1900. Geological interpretations in 1915 enabled major production during the next decade. In the late-1930s, USSR&M built a new mine and mill in Gold Road and the District flourished until closure by Federal Order L-208 in October 1942. For about a decade, Oatman’s mines were among the largest gold producers in the American West.

The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska'. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State's Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.
