There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. Arsenic (As) removal behavior from Changgoon mine tailings was investigated using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) in well-controlled batch reactors by varying pulp density (0.5?4%, pH=1.8, temp=30oC), reaction initial pH (1.8?2.2, pulp density=0.5%, temp=30oC), and temperature (25?35oC, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8). The initial concentration of As in the mine tailings used for bioleaching tests was about 30000 ppm, and the size range of tailings used in this study was 63?74 µm. The reaction speed and initial cell concentration were fixed to 150 rpm and 107 cells/mL, respectively. To complement leaching experiments, pH, oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), and amount of ferrous/ferric ions in leachate were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses were also conducted for the samples before and after leaching to see if any morphological and compositional changes in tailings took place during leaching process. The As leaching efficiency increased with decreasing pulp density, decreasing pH, and increasing temperature in the presence of A. ferrooxidans. Specifically, no significant change in As removal rate was observed when pulp density d 2% while the removal rate dramatically decreased at pulp density of 4%. Regarding pH effect, As removal rate was much more enhanced at lower pHs (i.e., 1.8 and 2.0) compared to pH 2.2. Increasing temperature was observed to tend to enhance As removal rate, showing about 20% enhanced leaching rate under 35oC compared to 25oC and 30oC at the elapsed time of 5 days. The results for As removal behavior at different conditions (i.e., pH, temperature, pulp density) were consistent with the change in pH, ORP, and ferric ion concentration in leachate, showing greater removal rate at the condition with lower pH, and higher ORP and ferric ion concentration in leachate. Furthermore, decreasing removal efficiency was likely in part due to the extent of the formation of by-product (i.e., jarosite) of ferric ions.

This paper presents the design and construction of a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. Three issues related to sensor placement are addressed in this paper: 1) sensor placement in long, horizontal boreholes, 2) development of simple, robust, MSHA-acceptable clamping unit, and 3) orientation of the geophones within the borehole. Improved imaging capabilities will produce energy, environmental, and economic benefits by increasing exploration accuracy and reducing operating costs.

An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

Most discussions of sustainable development (SD) in mining relate to metal mines in rural areas. Industrial minerals (IM) are closer to urban areas primarily owing to a high transport-cost component of delivered cost. This visibility to large populations overshadows IMs relatively small operation size and generally lower waste volume and toxicity. The IM industry needs to rethink its way of doing business to fit into the SD paradigm. Society and business in general will also undergo significant change to enable industrial SD along the lines of triple-bottom-line accounting with government pushing everyone. The benefit to IM mining from embracing SD is a renewal in their social license to operate and a rebirth of mining as a positively-viewed force in society. This positive view would lead to lower acquisition costs because society would not fight so hard to eliminate nearby mining. This would ease the current exploration woes of the IM industry by opening up new deposits for exploration and more readily allowing placement of mines nearer to markets. The earlier in the exploration process SD is initiated, the better.

The mining industry continues to underpin the regional economy. Australia, benefiting from a weak currency, receives 27% of the total goods export value from non-energy mining lead by aluminium, iron ore, gold and nickel. Consolidation has eliminated CRA, Comalco, North, Savage, Acacia, Ashton, Great Central, Aberfoyle, Placer Pacific, Plutonic, Normandy and RGC leaving Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, WMC, MIM and, increasingly, the South African companies Anglo, Gold Fields and Harmony as dominant players. Exploration stagnates with expenditure dropping 40% in Australia and 80% in PNG from peak levels. Major new regional developments include Rio’s West Angles iron ore project, Newcrest’s Ridgeway gold-copper mine and Inco’s Goro nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia.

This is the seventh annual tabulation of royalty information. It is also the first year in which some data have been deleted to make room for new data. The concept of royalties evolved from a time when the government owned all of the land, including mines, to the situation where free miners won the right to claim minerals but paid a portion of their production to the royal treasury. Today, a mineral royalty is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights for the privilege of producing the mineral commodity. However, some people incorrectly believe that the selling price and the royalty are the same thing. The contract between the owner (lessor) and the mining company (lessee) is the mineral lease. Some clauses that are common to mineral leases include: identification of property, granting clause, reservations, definitions, royalty rate, taxes and title, indemnity, termination, inspection, assignability, successors, and reclamation. There often are variations in royalty rates for a given commodity that reflect differences in location, quality, market conditions or public versus private ownership. History In the time of ancient Rome, the government owned the mining properties by virtue of conquest. It would lease the mines to favored citizens who would pay rent to the State. Various conditions of sovereign ownership of both land and mineral rights continued in Europe until the Renaissance. As the laws evolved for land ownership by private citizens, the concept that minerals belonged to the State (King, Crown, sovereign) continued until about the 15th century. Free miners challenged the notion of sovereign ownership and won the right to discover and claim minerals. But a portion of their production had to be paid to the sovereign - a royalty. So, the original concept of a mineral royalty was a tax on production that was due to the Crown or Church. The term mineral royalty, as it is known today, is a payment to the owner of the mineral rights (formerly the royal owner) for the privilege of mining and producing the mineral commodity. The owner of the mineral rights, the lessor, and the mine operator, the lessee, enter into an agreement to mine the property. The agreement is the lease. While this concept is common, there are some who do not understand that the royalty is a portion of production paid to the owner as agreed on in the lease document. This author has seen reports where the selling price of a commodity has been quoted as the royalty. ("They get 70 cents a ton royalty at their pit and the guy down the road only has a 65 cent royalty.") These reports have been authored by people not familiar with the mining industry. Lease clauses In addition to the amount to be paid the lessor, there are several other items to be addressed in the lease agreement. The following list may not be all inclusive, but briefly describes most of the common clauses any good mining lease should contain. Identification: This opening clause names the owner (lessor) and the operator (lessee), the address of each, and gives the legal description of the property. Granting clause: This part of the lease gives the time period or duration of the agreement and information about renewal periods. It also has language about the exclusive right of the lessee to mine the property. Reservations: If the owner wants to exclude any portion of the property or set some specific conditions about the operation, there needs to be a clause that describes these reservations. Definitions: This section should address some of the technical terms that the lessor may find confusing - short tons versus cubic yards, dollars versus percentage of average selling price, any escalator indices such as consumer price index or producer price index, and material mined versus material sold. Royalty: This section spells out what the royalty rate will be, how often it will be paid, if there is an annual minimum, the pay dates, and how the records will be kept. This section also describes the conditions under which the lessee is exempt from the annual minimum - natural disasters, strikes, governmental actions, or other causes referred to as force majeure. Taxes and title: The lease needs to identify who is responsible for the property taxes, severance taxes (if applicable), and other taxes that relate to the mining activity - taxes on equipment, improvements, or stockpiles. This is a good place in the lease for the owner to certify his ownership of the property and its mineral rights and also certify that no other leases are in effect. The lessees may want language that allows them to pay mortgages or other debts on the property to keep their lease in effect. Indemnity: This portion of the lease identifies that the lessee assumes the risks for lessee's mining operation. Lessor should expect indemnification by the lessee through standard insur¬ance policies - workers compensation, liability and property damage. Termination: Both the lessor and lessee want language that will allow them to terminate the lease. Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

At the present time, whether an electric utility uses high-sulfur coal is largely determined by geographical location, clean air legislation, and the age of the power plant. Acid rain legislation may well be the new force to change the use of high-sulfur coal. A number of coal papers were presented at the SME Fall Meeting in St. Louis, MO, Sept. 1986. These papers discussed high-sulfur coal in relation to its economics, trends and prospects, value of cleaned coal, and coal-cleaning technology. The Clean Air Act of 1970 required the reduction of SO, emissions from most stationary electric-generating plant to 0.5 kg (1.2 lbs) SO2, per million Btu of heat input. It was possible for many plants to utilize lower-sulfur coal or a mixture of high-sulfur and low-sulfur coal to meet this emission requirement. This 1970 act greatly increased the use of low-sulfur western coal. The 1978 amendment to the Clean Air Act required all new plants to use Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) to meet a requirement of 70% reduction of potential SO2 emissions to 0.3 kg (0.6 lb) SO2 per million Btu of heat input. With the requirement to use FGD, there was little or no demand for low-sulfur western coal in new eastern power plants. If' new acid rain legislation is enacted, it likely will require sizeable reductions in SO2, emissions by existing coal users. There might then be a shift to greater use of low-sulfur coals. The low-sulfur coals could come from either western or eastern mines or from cleaned eastern coals. Economics will dictate the approach older power plants will take to meet new regulationsuse FGD or low-sulfur coal. Coal use for electric power generation has changed from 1970 to 1985. Table 1, (Land, preprint 86-333) shows the change. The table shows that in 1985, US utilities used about 255 Mt (280 million st) of high-sulfur coal. Some 45 to 54 Mt (50 to 60 million st) of high-sulfur coal is being used in plants equipped with FGD and most of this use is in eastern states. This leaves 200 to 209 Mt/a (220 to 230 million st) of high-sulfur coal being used without FGD treatment. These plants are at risk if acid rain legislation is passed. Most of these plants are in the east and are more difficult to supply with low-sulfur coal. Estimates range from $20 to $30 billion capital investment and from $5 to $9 billion dollars per year operating costs to reduce SO2, emissions from those old medium-to-high-sulfur coal-burning plants. G. W. Land, (preprint 86-333), also presents tables relating to power generating costs and coal types. The author's tables are extracted from Land's tables IV and V. Table 2 here presents costs for a new plant. This includes the impact of different heat rates, fuel costs, fuel qualities, operating and maintenance costs, labor costs, and waste disposal costs. Table 3 compares estimated costs to retrofit an older plant with a limestone scrubber versus switching the same plant to low-sulfur eastern or western coal. Costs of switching include upgrading the electrostatic precipitator and - with western coal - costs of derating. Bhagwat, (preprint 86-325), details the trends in high-sulfur coal markets from 1974 to 1984. He also gives some prospects for high-sulfur coal markets, 1984 to 1994. The prospect depends mostly on whether acid rain legislation is enacted. By 1994, if New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) continue to be applied, high-sulfur coal demand from six mid-west and eastern states is expected to increase by 27 Mt (30 million st). • L. A. Gold ores containing antimony suffer from poor recoveries of gold in cyanidation due to the impact of antimony on the cyanidation process. Techniques such as lowering the pH for cyanidation can improve gold recovery, nevertheless a limit can be reached where high cyanide consumption makes traditional processing uneconomic. The paper outlines a process for the pre-treatment of gold-antimony concentrates to remove the antimony resulting in a low-antimony content gold-bearing residue suitable for efficient treatment for gold recovery through cyanidation. This hydrometallurgical process produces a by-product credit of commercial grade antimony trioxide as Senarmontite that can significantly offset the cost of the pre-treatment.

ME?s Arizona Conference was held at the Hilton El Conquistador resort in Tucson on Dec. 2 and 3, 2007. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The 2007 meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecturer and more than 25 technical papers that were presented in seven sessions. The sessions included environmental, geology, safety, metallurgy, mining, new projects and a special session on Mexico. Topics covered included mine closure, sustainable mining, exploration methods, health and safety issues, mining equipment and drilling. Much of the discussion at the conference concerned major new developments in the region?s copper mining industry. For example, Freeport-McMoRan?s new Safford Mine and BHP Billiton?s Pinto Valley restart were the topics of technical presentations. There was also much discussion among the attendees on the current and future price of copper, community relations, education issues and recruitment concerns. At the time of the conference, the price of copper hovered around $3.30/lb, up considerably from the 61 cents/lb in late 2001, when the industry was being challenged by world market conditions and a weakened domestic economy. Since then, strong demand from China helped push copper prices to record levels that at one time reached as high as $4/lb. The general consensus among the attendees is that the current price of around $3.30/lb will continue through 2008. Most attendees also expect increased corporate investments in the industry to continue. Copper mining in Arizona has been a major industry since the 1800s. In 2007, Arizona was the leading copper-producing state in the United States and produced more than $5 billion worth of copper. The copper mining industry in Arizona also produces byproduct gold, silver and molybdenum. Arizona is the second largest molybdenum producer in the United States.

Introduction Uranium was recovered from mining of collapse breccia pipe deposits in the Arizona Strip district in northwestern Arizona (Figure 1) intermittently between 1956 and 1990, with cumulative production having totaled 23.3 million pounds of U3O8 (8960 tU) at an average grade of 0.6% U3O8. Production was suspended in 1990 because of low uranium prices, but the recent resurgence in market price once again makes the breccia pipe deposits potentially attractive exploration and development targets. This paper describes: (1) formation of the pipe structures and their metallogenesis; (2) mining and milling of breccia ore; and (3) potential roadblocks to development of new breccia pipe mines. Breccia Pipe Formation Formation of the breccia pipes began in cave systems formed during development of karst topography in the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. The karst Redwall surface was eventually covered by up to 900 meters of shallow marine to continental sediments ranging in age from Pennsylvanian to Triassic. The pipes were formed by progressive upward stoping caused by groundwater ascending under hydraulic head along near-vertical faults, joints and fractures. The stoping process involved both chemical disaggregation and mechanical failure of roof and wall rock. Upward stoping of successively younger units allowed for upward propagation of a pipe and resulted in a chimney-like column of breccia between the steep walls of the pipe. Syndepositional thickening of sedimentary units of varying ages indicates that pipe formation began as early as early Pennsylvanian time and continued intermittently through Triassic time.

The Morenci concentrate leach plant construction was completed and successfully commissioned in October 2007. The plant was designed to operate at medium temperature, 160ºC and pressure, 2,100 kPa. The concentrate leach plant utilized many innovative design features. This paper examines the first year?s operation, the challenges, the successes and the lessons learned. The future plans for Morenci concentrate leaching will also be presented.

Machine guidance and control systems have become more pervasive in the mining industry in recent years but not always from mining-experienced providers. Dozers, motor graders, scrapers, excavators, shovels, draglines, drills and haul trucks are just a few examples of the types of heavy machinery now equipped with global positioning system (GPS)-aided guidance systems. While equipment manufacturers are offering their own software, many only supply solutions for the machines they produce. The proliferation of GPS equipment manufacturers entering the machine guidance and control arena has resulted in a multitude of makes and models of GPS receivers. Some of these companies also produce their own guidance software. But they usually just specialize in a narrow range of heavy machinery. So customers are forced to use multiple systems and face new challenges in implementation, training, reporting and inter-system communication.

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap that increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flow rate. Silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months to enhance the silver extraction rate. The Coeur-Rochester silver and gold mine, located in central Nevada, is an open pit, heap leach operation that has been in production since late summer of 1986. The facility produces about 15.4 kt/d (17,000 stpd) of -13 mm (-0.5 in.) ore to a leach area consisting of more than 37 hm2 (4 million sq ft) of 80 ml HDPE liner. Crushing is accomplished with a 1220x 1520-mm (48- x 60-in.) jaw crusher. This is followed by a single 2.1-m (7-ft) standard cone crusher and is completed with four 2.1 m (7 ft) short-head cone crushers. Agglomeration is not required for the crushed ore, which contains less than 10% -75. µm (-200 mesh) material. The ore contains 53 g/t (1. 55 oz per st) silver and 0.377 g/t (0.011 oz per st) gold. It is end dumped over previously leached material, leveled, and then ripped with a bulldozer. Drip emitters at 810 mm (32 in.) spacings on 910 mm (36 in.) centers are used to apply barren solution to the heap. A portion of the emitter lines are buried I m (3 ft) deep during the winter months and are placed on the surface the remainder of the year. The leach solution contains 0.75 g/L (750 ppm) sodium cyanide solution at a pH of 10.5 - 11. Dissolved oxygen averages 8 ppm in the pregnant solution. Cyanide consumption for the ore to date is just under 0.2 kg/t (0.4 lb per st). The pH control is accomplished by adding I kg/t (2.0 lb per st) 0-10 mm (-0.4 in.) pebble lime to the ore at the tertiary crusher. The pregnant solution is processed by a conventional closed circuit Merrill-Crowe system. The pregnant solution is clarified through three 158 L/sec (2500 gpm) US Filter Auto-jet clarifiers. The low potential hydrophobic state of pyrite in amyl xanthate flotation with nitrogen is of particular interest with regard to the N2TEC flotation technology currently being used for the recovery of auriferous pyrite at Newmont’s Lone Tree Plant in Nevada. The N2TEC system had been found to operate satisfactorily, but cyanide in the flotation mill water appeared to be responsible for a loss in pyrite recovery. This supposition was confirmed with laboratory experiments and a program was initiated to study flotation chemistry variables by electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements. Experimental results show that activation of pyrite in such cyanide solutions can be achieved more effectively with lead than with copper. Subsequently, based on these fundamental studies, significant improvement at the Lone Tree Plant was achieved by lead activation, in which case the recovery increased to expected levels. The effect of activator is particularly significant not only with respect to pyrite depression by residual cyanide, but also with respect to collector (PAX) consumption and the initial state of the pyrite surface. Each of these issues is being studied in detail and research progress is discussed herein.

On behalf of ME readers, the editors thank them.During the past 25 years, U.S. ball clay production (the quantity sold or used by domestic producers) increased from 788 kt (869,000 st) in 1990 to an alltime high of 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) in 2003 (Fig. 1). Housing construction within the United States, a leading market for ball clay-based ceramics and sanitaryware, began to decline in 2005, which resulted in a considerable decrease in sales of ball clay that continued through the 2008-2009 economic recession. After bottoming out at 831 kt (916,000 st) in 2009, ball clay production steadily increased through 2015 (Fig. 1). Estimated sales in 2015 were 36 percent higher than those in 1990 and 18 percent lower than those in 2003.Four companies (H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Imerys S.A., Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp.), mined ball clay in five states during 2015. The geoscience matrix method has proven useful for valuing metallic mineral properties lacking delineated mineral resources or reserves. However, the method explicitly excludes commodity markets from the factors considered; marketability is assumed. When valuing industrial mineral properties, marketability cannot be assumed, it must considered. Market considerations may also significantly affect the standard weightings of geoscience matrix parameters such as the proximity to known deposits. In some cases, such proximity is desirable but in many cases it is undesirable. Application of the geoscience matrix method to industrial mineral properties therefore requires thoughtful, market-related adjustments to the basic geoscience matrix methodology.

The leaching behavior of silver and silver oxides in ammonical solutions has been studied. The current study is concerned with an effective recovery of silver from secondary sources such as spent silver batteries. Silver associated with these batteries appears in various forms including metallic silver, argentous oxide, Ag2O and argentic oxide, AgO. The leaching behavior of metallic silver in ammoniacal solution has been studied using an electrochemical mehtod. Oxidants used in this study include hyperchlorite, hydrogen peroxide, bromine and iodine. Results on cyclic polarization and Tafel plots on the silver anode in ammoniacal solutions are presented and the results are discussed. The dissolution rate of metallic silver in ammoniacal solutions is also compared with those of silver oxides.
