"The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), one of the archetypes of slow spreading ocean ridges, extends from the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge southward to the Bouvet triple junction making up a significant proportion (~ 40%) of the global oceanic ridge system. During the past few decades, many hydrothermal fields like TAG, Logatchev, Ashasze were discovered along the northern part of the MAR, whereas the southern part, which makes up one third of the ridge (6000km), shows little documentation of hydrothermal mineralization, except for three sites: Site 4°48! the Nibelungen Field, and Lilliput. During March to May 2011, following discovery of three new hydrothermal fields during the 2nd Leg of COMRA's 22 Cruise of the R/V DayangYihao, the 3rd and 4th Legs found another two high temperature hydrothermal fields (SMAR15°S, SMAR26°S), one low temperature field, and several fields with strong turbidity and temperature anomalies in the water column. In this study, we present a preliminarily study of the mineralogy and isotopic geochemistry of the sulfides from SMAR 15°S and SMAR26°S.SMAR 15°S is situated in a SE-NW offset depression of an axial neovolcanic ridge in the median valley, with water depth of about 2793m. In the water column around this field, strong turbidity and temperature anomalies were detected. Ten-meter tall venting chimneys, hydrothermal mounds, as well as a large amount of hydrothermal vent shrimp were also observed and recorded by ROV and deep-tow camera surveys. The samples collected from this field include sulfide chimney fragments, massive sulfides and basaltic rocks. Based on the major metal and the mineral assemblages, three types of sulfides have been identified: 1) Zn-Fe rich sulfides with abundant wurtzite and pyrite zoned fragments, 2) Cu-Fe rich sulfides with much isocubanite and pyrite assemblage, 3) Fe-rich sulfide with massive pyrite fragments. These indicate that this field has undergone at least three phases of mineralization during the venting history."

Underground mining of coal by longwall mining methods has not been a predominant technique in Ohio. To date, only five mines in the state utilize this method, however, the technique has sparked a certain amount of controversy. As a mining technique, longwalling was introduced into southeastern Ohio in the early 1970's but it did not attract public attention until the mines began moving into privately held surface lands. This occurred coincidentally at about the same time that the state of Ohio began to regulate the environmental impacts of underground mining. Prior to the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act in 1977, (SMCRA), Ohio's reclamation law, Chapter 1513 Ohio Revised Code (O.R.C. 1513) did not regulate underground coal mines. As a result of SMCRA, the Ohio Statute was amended in 1978, to include regulation of the surface effects of subsidence. The inevitable result was that existing mines were immediately subject to regulations that were not considered during the initial mine planning process. (For an excellent survey of Ohio Laws that deal with coal mine subsidence, see Zima, 1985. ) The problem faced at that time by both the coal industry and the Ohio Division of Reclamation (the agency within ODNR charged with implementing O.R.C. Ch. 1513.1, was that of attempting to superimpose permitting requirements, and design performance standards onto mines that' had been operational for a number of years.

Although several studies in combining and bifurcating flows in two-way junctions and splits are reported, deviations persist in the estimated shock loss coefficients (SLCs). Due to their complex nature, more work has to be done to be able to correctly predict flow losses at these locations. In two-way splits, the flow at bifurcation is known to be characterized mainly by two recirculating zones in the downstream branches, whereas, in a junction one recirculating zone is observed immediately downstream of the main branch. The relative flow rate in the branches (quantity ratios) is treated as the only parameter defining the losses at these locations. However, the effect of wall roughness, if any, on SLCs becomes important for mine ventilation. This paper presents the critical determinants of shock losses at splits and junctions at varying quantity ratios. The flow at 90º split and junction was examined both experimentally and numerically for Reynolds number in the range of 1.0×104 to 1.6×105. With a well designed laboratory setup, using precision instruments, velocity and pressure measurements were carried out, by using two scales of wall roughness. 3D numerical simulations for these experiments were conducted by using ANSYS CFX modeling tool. CFD simulations yielded results that are reasonably close to experiments, providing high degree of satisfaction in numerically predicting losses across the splits and junctions. However, comparisons of these numerical simulation results with existing literature standards showed significant under-estimation of shock losses by the standard literature by as much as 50%. A clear rise in the magnitude of shock losses was noted in both the approaches, with increased wall roughness. Based on the current studies, predictor equations incorporating quantity ratios are developed for accurate estimation of shock losses. Further investigations on roughness are needed, before one is able to incorporate wall roughness into the prediction of SLC.

Basic parameters affecting the stability of foams have been studied. We used the thin film pressure balance (TFPB) technique of Scheludko and Exerowa (1959) to measure the surface forces in foam films stabilized with various frothers such as pentanol, octanol, MIBC, and PPG. The results were compared with the froth stabilities measured using the shake tests and the film elasticity calculated using the model developed by Wang and Yoon (2006). It was found that the froth stability is controlled by both film elasticity and surface forces (or disjoining pressure), the relative contributions from each changing with frother concentration and type.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (District) is in the final phase of completing the Calumet System component of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) by bringing the Thornton Composite Reservoir online by 2014. The Thornton Composite Reservoir will provide nearly 30 billion liters (7.9 billion gallons) of additional storage for minimization of combined sewer overflows(CSO) and flooding in the Chicago metropolitan area. The project requires that the existing 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter Thorn Creek tunnel conveying overbank flood flows is re-routed and connected to the Thornton Composite Reservoir. This paper presents the components of the Thornton Composite Reservoir and specifically the detailed evaluation of a drill-blast tunnel. Other project features include an access shaft, control gate, energy dissipating structure, bulkheads, and live tunnel connection. The construction contract will be procured in late 2009.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

The structure is 150-years old and subsided 4.5 feet. This paper discusses the mitigation measures taken to reduce the subsidence damage and its effectiveness.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. INTRODUCTION This paper discusses the design of the subsurface nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada; and possible concepts for construction of the subsurface facility. Subsurface construction at Yucca Mountain is planned to last for 20 or more years, and may be accomplished using tunnel boring machines (TBM), drill and blast methods, raise bore machines, and roadheaders. The design of the subsurface facility includes approximately 107 km (66 miles) of tunnels and drifts. The vast majority of the repository will be excavated with TBMs. Design and construction concepts for the subsurface repository discussed in this paper are based on the License Application that was submitted to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on June 3, 2008. The License Application was subsequently docketed by the NRC in September 2008. When a Construction Authorization is received from the NRC, notices to proceed with subsurface construction at Yucca Mountain will be issued by DOE. The Yucca Mountain site is located in the Mojave Desert approximately 150 km (90 miles) northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada. The site is on federal land in southern Nevada and is shown in Figure 1. Yucca Mountain is a ridge of volcanic rocks com-posed primarily of solidified volcanic ash. Previous underground construction work at Yucca Mountain included excavation of two tunnels using two different TBMs. The first tunnel, the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF), is a 7.62 m (25 ft) diameter tunnel that is 7,877 m (25,843 ft) long and was described by Morris and Hansmire at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) in 1995. The second tunnel, known as the Enhanced Characterization of the Repository Block (ECRB), was a TBM drive of 5.0 m (16 ft, 5 in.) in diameter and 2,681 m (8,796 ft) long. The second tunnel was excavated in 1998 and was described by Fulcher, Eastlund and Copeland at RETC 1999 and is named the East?West Cross Drift in that paper. (These previously excavated tunnels are shown in Figure 2.) In the volcanic rock formation where the vast majority of the planned repository will be con-structed, previous tunneling conditions were generally very good.

Markets and Production Beryllium (Be), an extremely light metal, is used in many specialty applications. It the lightest element in Group 2A of the periodic table, with a specific gravity of 1.85 gm/cc, and a high melting point of 12850C (Calvert, 2004). The functional properties of beryllium are stiffness, strength, dimensional stability, resistance to corrosion from acids, and electrical and thermal conductivity. The ability to reflect neutrons and transmit x-rays, makes beryllium irreplaceable in uses such as precision optical components, inertial guidance systems, and in nuclear reactors (Anon, 1993). Beryllium is used in Cu alloys to strengthen and reduce corrosion in copper wire, and in lightweight oxide ceramics that are used as heat sinks, and as electrical insulators. In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

The West Elk Mine is located near Somerset, Colorado approximately 70 miles southeast of Grand Junction, Colorado and 72 miles southwest of Glenwood Springs, Colorado on state highway 133 (Figure 1). The West Elk Mine was opened January 20, 1982 as the Mount Gunnison #1 Mine operated by the West Elk Coal Company, a division of ARCO Coal. In the early 1990?s ARCO changed the mine name to West Elk Mine and the operating company was renamed Mountain Coal Company. Arch Coal, Inc. purchased the West Elk Mine in 1998. West Elk Mine has produced coal from three different seams. Coal was first mined from the F Seam, the upper most seam in the stratigraphic sequence, from 1982 through 1991. Coal was produced from the B Seam, the lower most seam, starting with continuous miners in 1991 and transitioning to longwall mining in 1992and continued on through October 2008. The development of the E Seam, which is the middle seam in the stratigraphic column, started in 2004 with longwall production commencing in 2008. The ventilation conversion from exhausting to forcing for the E Seam portion of the West Elk Mine was implemented in late October 2009.

"Northwestern Pacific submarine seamounts are believed to be future marine mining areas of ferromanganese crusts, which contain hi-tech industrial metals, such as Co, Ni, Te, Ti, Pt, and REEs. The Takuyo No. 5 seamount is a member of the Cretaceous super-plume seamounts in the north Pacific, located within a Japanese EEZ (100 nm from the Minami- Torishima Is. or Marcus Is.), and only 300 nm away from the Japan’s Licensed area for exploration of Co-rich ferromanganese crusts under the ISA. This is an on-going program supported by independent academic communities but not a state-run program or managed by private funding.We have observed, sampled, measured, and analyzed the occurrences, distribution, physical properties, and microbiological environments at a selected flat topped seamount named Takuyo No.5 as a model area for scientific study of ferromanganese crusts within the Japanese EEZ. We then characterized crust structures, composition, age, and growth history, resulting in an understanding of the overall nature and distribution of these deposits from wide range of areas, water depths and geological environments. The study started with a ROV (Hyper-Dolphin 3K of JAMSTEC) exploration jointly with universities and national institutions (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal Exploration Corporation, and Geological Survey of Japan) in 2009 using marine geology vessels, remotely-operated vehicle, an oceanbottom drill machine, deep-tow TV camera, as well as conventional dredges and corers. We have been studying the topography, geology, nature of the bottom material of the seamounts using delicate sampling devices and measurement tools, and characterized the distribution patterns of the metal-rich ferromanganese deposits from chemical, mineralogical, and microbiological points of view."

Despite the abundance of solid mineral deposits, Nigeria only earns about 0.5-1% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the solid minerals sector. This is as a result of the dominance of the oil and gas industry, which has negatively affected the competitiveness of other sectors of Nigeria’s economy. The dominance of this industry has resulted in unemployment, poverty, hunger, domestic price inflation, corruption, unstable government, and higher exchange rates. These impacts are typical for economies suffering from the effects of "Dutch Disease" and the "Resource Curse". Community-based small-scale mining offers hope as an economic activity that can create wealth, employment, reduce hunger and poverty, and provide basic amenities for rural communities with solid minerals endowment. This study presents preliminary results of ongoing research into the prospects of using community-based small-scale mining in a developing country like Nigeria to move towards rural sustainable development.

Borehole mining (BHM) is a remotely operated method of extracting rock material through boreholes by high-pressure water jets. Figure 1 illustrates a BHM tool and fluids circulation. The tool consists of at least two pipes, one for pumping down high-pressure water, the second for delivering slurry to the surface. This article reviews the BHM process. It discusses current and new applications for borehole mining and help the readers determine if BHM is applicable in their situations. Previous articles in ME about BHM explained either a particular project (ME, April 2001, pp. 33-36) or a newest patent in this area (ME, March 1991, pp. 313-318). However, neither one provided an overview on the modern BHM technology.

This paper presents the calibration of a real-time aerosol monitor, the TSI DustTrak?, to the NIOSH 5040 method being used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for compliance enforcement evaluation. The standard NIOSH 5040 instrument for compliance evaluation of diesel particulate matter (DPM) has an inherent time lag of up to two weeks for laboratory processing of sample results. Therefore, providing the underground mines with a means of quantifying DPM conditions in real-time, will enable them to efficiently and effectively manage DPM levels to ensure compliance with the regulated limit.

The recovery of natural gas (primarily methane) from coalbed deposits is an established and growing source for the U.S and accounts for over 7% of its total production. The gas from on-purpose degassing is often pipeline quality and requires only compression and dehydration before being admitted to the pipeline grid. However, the raw gas is sometimes contaminated with nitrogen (N2) and/or carbon dioxide (CO2) that can make the gas inadmissible to the transportation pipeline. In general, the N2 must be 4% or less and the CO2 should be 2% or less. In treating gas produced from virgin coal bed or from degassing operations where CO2 is present, amine systems are traditionally used for its removal. Engelhard’s Molecular Gate® adsorption system offers an attractive alternative due to its skid-mounted equipment, low pressure and unattended operation, cost and high on-stream reliability. Natural gas can also be sourced from the residual coal, after the coal has been mined. This source can be the GOB or gas remaining in abandoned coal mines. This source is almost universally contaminated, often with a combination of CO2 and N2. If the source is from air intrusion, the source can also be contaminated with O2. In treating CO2 / N2 contaminated feeds, the Molecular Gate adsorption system removes both of the impurities along with a level of O2 within a single processing step. To date, ten Molecular Gate units are underway with three systems having been installed for upgrading gas from abandoned coal mines. The technology consists of specialty adsorbents and advanced PSA processes that are jointly offered as fabricated packaged equipment by Engelhard Corporation and Guild Associates, Inc. Upgrading requirements, project challenges and project arrangements are discussed in this paper.

A selective extraction and separation of zirconium by solvent extraction with 1-octanol is proposed. The process is based on the dissolution of the metal basic carbonates in hydrochloric acid in the presence of potassium fluoride, using 1-octanol as extractant. The effect of several process parameters, including hydrochloric acid and potassium fluoride concentrations, reaction time, and phase ratio between the aqueous and the organic phase was investigated. Zirconium is enriched in the organic phase. The best extraction and separation results were obtained with the basic carbonate dissolved in 10% hydrochloric acid and 1.5 M potassium fluoride. The optimum reaction time was 15 min with an organic to aqueous phase ratio of 2:1. Based on the selectivity of zirconium over hafnium in the organic phase, a McCabe-Thiele diagram was constructed. A near complete stripping of zirconium from the organic phase was achieved using a 3 M sulphuric acid solution. Additional studies are required in order to determine the reaction mechanism and the chemical speciation of the current investigation.

The health & safety of all workers in an underground environment is paramount to the success of our operations. The diesel emission reduction projects are key to improving such an environment. However, care must be taken to reduce the risk to personnel during such tests and prevent exposure to other hazards. VALE Inco works in a close partnership with its unionized employees, manufactures, suppliers, researchers and government officials to ensure projects are done safely and efficiently to successful completion. The Creighton Mine Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) project is an example of such a project that is currently under way to evaluate new and innovative technology that will further our search for improved environment for our workplace. This paper will discuss the issues and processes that are followed to ensure Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) field tests are conducted safely and productively.

A case study was conducted on a metal mine operating in Kazakhstan, in which problems were associated with use of a complicated and outdated ventilation system and its high expenses. The mine needs to reconsider its existing ventilation system and identify the risks associated with operational losses when using this ventilation system. The aim of this study was to develop an efficient risk analysis method capable of estimating operational risks and financial benefits of the existing mine ventilation system. The developed risk analysismethod considers ventilationmodelling, riskmodelling, and financialmodelling.Ventilation modelling comprises ventilation simulation and ventilation financial simulation. In risk modelling, the number of risk events occurring with the use of existing ventilation system and the operational losses during these events is estimated. Financial modelling considers operational losses and ventilation financial simulation benefits and uses a dynamic cash flow model to estimate how cost variability influences the cash flow. As a result, the improved ventilation system attains an additional NPVa ranging from 3.2 to 8.5 million US$ at the corresponding defined probability of 90%. The results of this study reveal that the developed risk analysis method can efficiently estimate the financial benefits of ventilation modelling and consider risk events and their total operational losses associated with use of the existing ventilation system. This approach provides a range of possible outcomes and helps with deciding whether the ventilation system is appropriate or whether it should be updated to better suit the project financial benefits.
