GEORGE WEINMAN: Our first group leader for the discussion, "Ups and Downs of Downsizing," wishes to remain anonymous. ANONYMOUS PRESENTER: When George and Jamie asked me to do this, I thought a while about what to say and went through several variations of what I’ll present today. I came up with the title "Ups and Downs of Downsizing." A lot of downsizing has occurred in all of our industries-mining in particular. While this downsizing has gone on there's no doubt that all of us produced more and more, probably with less and less people and less and less resources. But I contend that there's also a big downside associated with this. I disagree with a point made in the keynote presentation yesterday, the point being that vendors are bringing new technology to us. I can agree that the major changes associated with equipment and similar items are being brought to us by vendors. But I do contend that there's an awful lot that's getting away from us-especially if you factor in the integrated supply or the strategic alliance or the various and sundry related purchasing techniques. I contend that we are missing a lot of, let's call it, lesser technology; not major equipment changes, but different tools, different techniques for doing things, different left-handed widgets. The integrated suppliers, to some degree, are bringing this to us; but I am concerned about the small guy who comes up with a good idea but deals through integrated suppliers rather than having direct contact with plant people. They're probably going to go somewhere else and market their wares. That's what I'm hearing from a lot of smaller vendors. I also think that we are losing a lot of our knowledge base. Every time you shrink an organization somebody leaves. The bottom line: less people. When a person leaves-and I don't care who he or she is, be it the janitor who's cleaning the bathroom, the operator, the engineer-when that person leaves there's some knowledge that goes with that per- son. And sometimes that knowledge is quite valuable. I've worked more or less at the plant "low." I can't tell you how many excellent, viable projects have come from people who said, "Look here. There's a better way of doing this." And, you know, they were right. Now, maybe they didn't have the resources or the expertise to develop these ideas into full projects, but they had that basic idea. Someone may say, "Well, if we put a no. 6 skyhook here, so we can lift this particular pump without bringing a crane from 30 miles away ...." No. 6 skyhooks are a bit expensive, but what if we put together a little structural steel here or whatnot?

Nothing in Turkey is simple. Its his¬tory is long and convoluted, its culture fascinating, its metallogeny diverse, and its geology very complex. This article will focus on the geology of western Anatolia and the precious metals poten¬tial of this third of Turkey. Any gold produced by mines in Tur¬key since the early 1900s has been a by-product of the mining for other met¬als, such as copper from the massive sulfide deposits of the Pontics. Archaeological records, however, prove that gold was mined from the Pactolus (present day Gediz) River and refined by Croesus at Sardis in about 550 BC. Other records and legends make it possible that gold was mined before 1200 BC for the Homeric City of Troy (Priams treasure?) about 25 km (15 miles) east of Canakkale at Mad¬endag and Kartaldag. A final legend of antiquity suggesting gold in what is now Turkey relates to King Midas. And, indeed, the city-state belonging to a king of that name has been recognized near the city of Eskise¬hir. More recently, precious metals have been mined at Madendag-Kartaldag in the late 1800s. Arapdag, near Izmir, remains the only "authenticated" epith¬ermal precious metal deposit in Turkey (Mosier et al., 1985). With this spotty record, why the sud¬den interest shown by at least five Euro¬pean-based, three or four US-based, and several other international mining firms and their Turkish subsidiaries? Like other aspects of Turkey, the complete answer is not simple but, reduced to its basics, has three parts. Turkey, relative to many developing nations, has a stable, democratic form of government (although it also has a for¬midable bureaucracy) whose currency exchange rate is premised on the US dollar. New laws promulgated since 1983 have opened the country and welcomed foreign investment. Some have even provided investment incentives. The Mining Law of August 1985 made sweeping reforms of the old land tenure system. This law made it possible for a foreign-based company to have a wholly-owned Turkish subsidiary en¬gaged in mining. Equally important is the belated recognition that western Anatolia, while geologically compli¬cated, is today basically a province Neogene extensional tectonics having many of the geologic attributes of the leading gold producing province of the US - the Basin and the Range. Geologic rationale for precious metals exploration Tectonic/lithologic framework: Alle¬gorically and simplistically, Anatolia during early Neogene (middle Miocene) can be likened to a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. It is squeezed in the vise formed by the Arabian plate mi¬grating north toward the southwest end of a stable Asian platform. The "tube" was compressed. It could not expand to the east because it was sealed by what is now southern Russia and Iran. The filling of the tube escaped to the west, in the direction in which the cap was miss¬ing (Fig. 1). So developed during the middle to late Miocene the western-most struc¬tural province of Anatolia. This was done by a process aptly termed tectonic "escape" by Sengor et al (1985). This province is dominated by exten¬sional tectonics much like the Basin and Range of the western US and has an estimated extension of between 30% and 50%. The most striking manifesta¬tion of this extension is the 10 to 11 major east-west trending grabens (Ge¬diz, Buyuk Mendares, Kocuk Mendares, etc.) and intervening horsts, although a much greater number of smaller, gener¬ally northeast-striking grabens and half

Hoses provide a variety of critical functions in nearly every mining operation. Care must be taken when selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses to insure maximum hose life. This article provides some tips on selecting, installing, and maintaining hoses, and gives some background on hose construction and safety. In the mining industry, hoses are used for everything from hydraulic systems that power drills and hammers, to suction systems that carry away dust and debris. Hoses are used on such a large scale that a detailed discussion of specific applications would require many volumes. Dayco Corp. has, however, provided these basic and brief guidelines on how to select and maintain hoses for mining applications. Hose Construction Industrial hoses are classified as much by construction as they are by application. So, it is a good idea to start any discussion of hoses with a description of their basic construction. There are four basic components to hoses: the tube, reinforcement, cover, and couplings. The tube is the inner core or lining, and is usually made of smooth rubber or plastic. Rubber or plastic composition is scientifically determined to be compatible with the materials passing through it, such as fluids, chemicals, gases, or substances. Other considerations in compounding rubber or plastic for the tube are temperature ranges and stresses. In practice, the required compound can be precisely chosen from various charts listing them according to application. There are, however, applications where the compounding of tube rubber or plastic must be customized. The reinforcement hose layer immediately surrounds the tube. As its name implies, this layer gives the hose strength and provides protection for the tube component. Reinforcement must be able to contain the inner forces-pressure and shock-transmitted through the tube, and such external forces as twisting, bending, and crushing. So it is usually made of high tensile strength cord, fabric, or wire that is wrapped, wound, or braided around the tube. The cover is the outermost layer, so it may encounter oils, acids, water, dust, abrasion, and other potentially damaging influences depending, of course, on the application. An appropriate cover material must be selected, usually a rubber compound. Couplings, even though they are a hose attachment, are as vital as any other component and should be considered part of the hose. Couplings are usually made of carbon steel or malleable iron; however, bronze or stainless steel might be used if corrosive chemicals are involved and brass or aluminum might be used for flammable fluids. A coupling is usually in two parts: an insert that fits into the hose bore and contains the threaded male, female, or other type of connection, and the ferrule or collar that fits over the hose and secures the coupling in place. There are, however, some one-part couplings that fit securely into the hose without a ferrule. These are usually limited to low pressure applications and are secured to the hose by clamps or metal bands. Some fittings can also be permanently "built-in" as the hose is made. Couplings can be classified as reusable or permanent. The reusables can be removed when the old hose expires and used again on a new hose. The permanent types are crimped or swaged on at the factory or in the field (using special equipment) and must be discarded with the hose. Although couplings are most commonly thought of as having threaded fittings, there is another type called "quick connect." Introduction Computer-based haul truck dispatching has been operational at Tyrone since May, 1980. The system, known as Dispatch, has accomplished significant productivity gains compared with the former method of manual radio dispatching. These gains translate into a reduction in equipment requirements or an increase in production. An operational mine may choose to increase production or reduce the number of equipment shifts operated, resulting in substantial operating savings. Dispatch Description The core of Dispatch is a VAX 11/780 computer. Originally purchased with 512 kbytes of memory, the system is now upgraded to 3.75 Mbytes to accommodate users from all areas of the operation. Dispatch alone requires 200 kbytes of locked-in memory, with an additional 300 kbytes of memory available on a top priority basis. The computer, located in the Tyrone Branch general office building, is connected by under-ground cables to the dispatch tower, 3.2 km (2 miles) from the general office. Four two-paired lines are used to drive two cathode ray tubes, a printer, and the Dispatch master panel. One CRT continuously displays pertinent pit information for the dispatcher's use. Routinely displayed transactions include truck assignments, changes in shovel material type, truck and shovel breakdowns and delays, and changes in truck, shovel, or dump status. Er¬ror detection capabilities include late arrival and improper input from the field panels. The second display terminal is used for utility reporting and input functions. Status reports are displayed for availability, position, and material type being handled by any given truck or shovel. Fuel reports are available indicating the time last fueled, quantity of fuel delivered, and the time spent fueling. A truck factor utility reports relative performance to other trucks and a shovel utility reports efficiencies in tons per shovel shift. Instantaneous shift reports and mine status reports are available. Inputs such as lineups, operator changes, new travel times, shovel bias, tie down times, and lunch times are all handled with the utility display terminal. The printer records a hard copy of operating truck locations and production from the beginning of each shift. If there is a system malfunction, the printer copy is readily available to the foreman for radio dispatching. The Dispatch master panel is a microprocessor-based panel that allows the dispatcher to override any computer-assigned transaction. Classification of "bad order" conditions and acceptance of certain field messages is entered through the master panel. This panel communicates with all truck and shovel field panels via UH radio frequency through a repeater tower located on a high ridge contiguous to the mining area. Each truck and shovel field panel unit transmits a coded signal that is identified by the computer. A typical communication sequence between field panels and the computer for one complete truck cycle is: • The truck panel LED display indicates the shovel number to which it is assigned. The truck arrives at its assigned shovel and the operator presses the "Arrive" button on the truck panel. As the computer receives the "Arrive" message, it concludes the return (empty) travel time and begins accumulating idle time before loading. • When the first dipper of muck is placed into the bed of the truck, the operator presses the "Load" button. The computer concludes the truck idle time accumulation and begins the loading time calculation. • When the truck is loaded, the shovel operator presses the "OK"

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota's economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota's iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry's competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota's taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota's Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24. "For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. This belt extends diagonally across the country over a breadth of Table 1. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. This paper describes research being undertaken by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to assist the continuous miner operator and section foreman in the performance of their jobs. The project will initially provide visual assistance to the miner operator, and later it will semiautomate the mining (cutting) process. Using a technique known as "RF tagging," the project will also provide the section foreman with real-time or near-real-time information about the performance of the loading and hauling units. This data will allow the section foreman to quickly detect problems and take action where appropriate. The project is based upon the application of currently available technology, and in-mine testing results from the first phase are now available.

Two Sun Juan Basin studies were completed through the USGS National Coal Availability program. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field (Fruitland Formation) and in the eastern Standing Rock field (Menefee Formation). In the Bisti and Standing Rock areas, the original coal resource5 are estimated at 4.66 and 3.1 7 Gt (5.14 and 3.49 billion st), respectively. The Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Nu- Zin wilderness area, which contains an estimated 1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st) of coal. Technological restrictions remove 32.5% from Standing Rock's original resource. Available resources are 60%. 2.79 Gt (3.07 billion st), of the Bisti original resource and 65%, 2.07 Gt (2.28 billion st), of the original Standing Rock resource.

A high-strength, industrial-grade membrane filter- cloth capable of high flow rates and sub-micrometric particle retention has been developed. A filtration system using this filter- combined with special filtration techniques and using tubular-filters makes possible the filtration of many difficult-to-jilter slurries. Small, discrete, slowly-settling particles are formed into filter cakes that when pulsed of the membrane filter cloth do not redisperse but settle rapidly to form a dense filter under- flow. A positive separation of solids from liquids is obtained.

Roots of many hydroponically grown terrestrial plants, including sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) effectively remove toxic metals such as Cu+2, Cd+2, Cr+6, Ni+2, Pb+2 and Zn+2 2 from aqueous solutions. It should be possible to scale up this process such that plant roots can be used to treat large volume aqueous waste streams. It can be extrapolated from laboratory results that to reduce the Cd concentration in a waste stream, from 1 ppm to below 4 ppb, with a flow rate of 4000 L/min, would require 3500 sq. m of plant roots with a density 5 kg fresh weight per sq. m. These results suggest that the roots of hydroponically grown terrestrial plants may provide an attractive alternative to the accepted water treatment technologies.

Two types of native sulfur deposits have been found in Lechuguilla Cave: thin late-stage crusts and massive early- formed deposits. Most, if not all, of the crusts appear to have formed by remobilization of native sulfur contained within gypsum and sulfur masses. The process is occurring today and is slowly converting the sulfur to gypsum. The absence of primary gypsum or reductants in the cave indicates that the early-formed massive sulfur deposits did not form by in-place reduction of sulfate, which is the process that formed the commercial sulfur deposits in the Delaware basin. Instead, it appears that H2S dissolved in basinal brines was oxidized by oxygen in near-surface ground waters in the cave. Fluid- inclusion data, which suggest the presence of both fresh water and saline water as the sulfur formed, support this interpretation. Although individual sulfur deposits in Lechuguilla Cave are no more than several tens of metric tons, the abundance of secondary gypsum (as much as 10 meters thick) indicates that native sulfur may once have been much more extensive.

Cement plants in the central Hudson River valley utilize limestones of the Helder-bergian Series of the Lower Devonian. Chiefly calcilutites, calcarenites, and cherty calcisiltites, these rocks represent progressively deeper environments, from lagoonal to neritic, with scattered reef deposits. Stratigraphic continuity is marked, and a layer-by- layer analysis shows strikingly constant chemical compositions. The structural picture varies from flat-lying and relatively unfaulted beds on the northwest, through gently folded and faulted beds on the north, to complex overturned beds with closely spaced imbricate faults on the south. Operating techniques are simpler in the north, where grade control is effected chiefly by the initial layout of the faces. In the south, grade control requires flexibility and frequent adjustment of faces or scheduling. A system of quarrying along strike has been developed, grade being computed from a cumulative foot-per cent graph of the critical oxides in each mappable layer. Balancing shovel production among the many faces is simplified by comparing production requirement ratios with ratios of the various types of rock in each face. Drilling and blasting limits are geologically controlled if warranted, or large blasts embracing several rock types are shot and the resulting pile of broken rock is staked along shovel limits.

Introduction With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive min¬ing costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man¬power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels, mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor) and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accu¬rate and detailed planning of predictable manpower require¬ments. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes. Mine Management Support System The Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is an integrated decision support system that was developed using Sun Microsystems hardware according to the contract be¬tween the US Bureau of Mines and West Virginia University. The software used in the development of MMSS included X¬ windows (Scheitler and Gettys, 1986) for the user interfaces, LASER (Raman, 1985; Hayhurst, 1990) for the expert sys¬tem and graphics components, and the C language for general programming requirements. Sun DOS was used to allow the use of IBM-compatible applications software on the Sun networks. Sun OS is the operating system. It can be viewed as an enhanced version of UNIX. One of the components of MMSS that was developed to address the many specific objectives outlined in Grayson et al. (1990) is the work scheduling system. MMSS accom¬plishes work scheduling by using a mathematical (goal) programming approach to minimize the amount of switching of workers from their regular jobs to perform other jobs (Grayson and Nutter, 1991). Manpower support program The main objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and manage¬ment preferences to predict required manhours for various support activities, for example, belt moves. This is accom¬plished by gathering and processing planning information the same way a mine planner would. The program is menu¬driven with the selection of a particular menu item locating the user in the appropriate area within the spreadsheet to review/add information. All of the interactions between productivity, section conditions and management prefer¬ences and their effect on the amount of support work required must be considered. Information regarding the productivity of a particular section, the geometry of the section, work standards for individual activities and section conditions must all be gath¬ered for input into the program. In the initial stages of development, it was decided that the program be developed in an environment that mine planners were familiar with in order to accommodate the use of the program. Lotus 1-2-3 or a compatible (Quattro Pro) met this environmental need. Other reasons included ease of calculation due to built-in functions, powerful command language and macro capabili¬ties. Each of the major components of the program defined are summarized. Production schedule This area allows the user to input a production schedule for the entire mine over 12 periods. Space has been provided for five sections, advance or retreat, and two longwall sections. There are several calculations occurring in this area that do not apply to the determination of manpower, but serve as an aid in production planning. Section description The section description area of the spreadsheet is shown in Table 1. The first three items are calculated in the production schedule area of the worksheet and then transferred to this location. The remaining information is input by the user to be used in later calculations.

A series of tests were run on soil samples collected near the site of a Socorro, NM lead smelter that was abandoned more than 98 years ago. Three 30.5- x 30.5-m (100-X 100-ft) squares provided 13 samples each. As described in Part I (this issue), each sample was divided into seven splits according to particle size. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils failed to reveal crystalline Pb compounds. These authors conclude that Pb is present as amorphous phases or is adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Site vegetation contained elevated Pb levels that increased with increasing Pb amounts in the soil. However, the biological absorption coefficient (BAC) indicates that some of the site's Pb is unavailable, or the plants are able to limit their uptake. Of the vegetation tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels in its roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in the foliage. In cactus, the Pb levels varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by " remote control " mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications" as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the philosophy behind this being to inspire other workers to achieve worth- while goals.

The reaction kinetics of the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock (32% P?05) using 45% nitric acid were investigated using the Shrinking Core Model (SCM) , a newly developed Diffusion Model (DM) and a newly developed Combined Reaction and Diffusion Model (CRDM). This was achieved buy conducting a number of experiments in a controlled batch reactor system at different temperatures. The conversion and the reaction rate were calculated at different time intervals. The SCM based on reaction time and the CRDM characterize the acidulation process of phosphate rock. Diffusion of nitric acid and the products of acidulation at the early stages of reaction through the phosphate rock were found to be the rate-controlling step, resulting in a dif- fusion coefficient, which controls the mass transfer process. The reaction kinetics were found to fit first-order kinetics especially during early stages of reaction time. The deviation of the kinetics from first-order at later stages was due to the fact that the overall reaction was mass transfer controlled with respect to nitric acid and products diffusion.

Once a mineralized body has been delineated, drilled and estimated from surface samples, it often happens that before the final go-no-go decision is taken, an underground sampling program is decided, very often via a ramp which hopefully will be later used to extract the ore. The cost of such a program can be close to a million dollars. On other occasions, when a property changes hands and is reexamined maybe 20 years after the original drilling program, a "check sampling" program is carefully, designed to make "sure" that the old assays are "correct". One may fear poor sampling practice in old days, or deliberate highgrading by promoters. Again one may be talking of resampling cost which may be in the six-figures range. Other similar situations include the drilling of a few large diameter holes to ascertain the validity of a majority of small diameter drill holes, or auger drilling, or back-rimming. In uranium checking radiometric information is also a problem related to the above ones.

"Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). In this paper, the numerical simulation and field test methods are used to design the high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam water injection technology, so as to solve the difficult problem of coal dust control in high-pressure and low-porosity in deep well mining process."
