From a historical perspective, bentonite is the common rock term for various uses and applications. Its name originates from water-based muds near Fort Benton used for lubrication of wagon wheels during the 19th century migration to western territories (which are presently part of the United States) when the pioneers ran out of axle grease. From a clay mineralogy perspective, bentonite is composed primarily of montmorillonite, an expandable magnesium aluminum silicate clay mineral. When magnesium occupies an octahedral structural site that usually contains an aluminum atom, a negative charge is created. In order to neutralize negative charges, cations are drawn to the interlayer surfaces between clay mineral sheet structures. Modem applications for bentonite depend on the sodium or calcium cation populations and other characteristics of the clay mineral. When sodium is the dominant cation, the material is called sodium bentonite, also known as swelling bentonite, western bentonite or Wyoming bentonite. When calcium or magnesium is the dominant cation, the material is called calcium bentonite, also known as non-swelling bentonite w southern bentonite.

The United States is faced with increasing demands for electricity, coupled with continuing demands for crude oil and gas. Superimposed on these' national requirements are our national requirements for clean air and elimination of thermal pollution of our rivers. From the coal viewpoint, this situation is complicated still more by the rapid advances in nuclear power. In this paper, I hope to show a way to use our Western coals as a solution to this involved national problem by producing: 1. High quality crude 2. Low cost power 3. Economic byproducts We could expect these products to be made at one site in an integrated plant that would mine (extract) coal, process it, and convert it to electricity. Perhaps the most important attribute of the plant is its reduced water requirement and the elimination of air pollution from the power cycle. Quite logically, such a plant would probably recover valuable byproducts, such as pipeline gas, sulphur, cement, aluminum, and the like. Although the plant projected in this paper is a conceptual one, it is based on work now underway by Government and industry. Prediction of the future is a most hazardous occupation, but plants such as the one projected are based on current knowledge and can be expected to reach commercial operation in the near term future.

The Mississippi embayment ball clay region, including western Kentucky, western Tennessee, and northwestern Mississippi, accounted for more than 95% of the total U.S. ball clay production during 1985. Other producing states during the year were Texas and Maryland. The U.S. Bureau of Mines reported total domestic production for 1985 of 910,000 short tons. The United States exports approximately 20% of the annual ball clay production. Geologically, the ball clay deposits are sedimentary in origin and occupy the north- eastern flank of the Mississippi embayment. The commercial deposits have been confined to the Claiborne and Wilcox formations within mid to lower Eocene and upper Paleocene age strata. The deposits are lenticular in nature and highly variable in areal extent and thickness. They exhibit very abrupt lateral boundaries and are bounded laterally and vertically by unconsolidated sands, silts, and waste clays.

The Tacoma, Washington plant is one of six plants in the United States Gypsum Company's Acoustical and Mineral Fiber Division. The Tacoma facility was acquired in 1959 along with six other mineral wool plants from the American Rock Wool Company. Originally, the Tacoma plant was built as a carbide plant during the Second World War and after that was converted and operated as a mineral wool plant by several insulation companies. Through these early years, the use of raw materials at Tacoma consisted primarily of slags along with small percentages and various combinations of silica (in various forms such as gravel), limestone and basalt. These raw materials were melted in cupolas using coke as the heat source. Raw material usage and types as well as mineral wool production methods and equipment remained without major changes for many years.

The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

In 1966 Central Ohio Coal Company and Bucyrus-Erie signed a contract authorizing Bucyrus-Erie Company to design and build a 220 cubic yard dragline. This dragline would be used for stripping overburden from their coal reserves located near Cumberland, Ohio. The size of the machine was arrived at after a thorough application study of their annual coal output requirement, depth of overburden and type of terrain. The design and construction of this machine which has been designated by BECO as model number 4250-W is the title of this paper. Size wise based on machine weight the 4250-W represents an increase factor of three over our largest current dragline. Probably the easiest way of presenting a machine of this size is to build it from the bottom up.

Cuprex Limited is currently developing a small gold mining operation in Central Australia in the Tennant Creek field. In February 1984, the company undertook a feasibility study on the project and operations commenced in August 1984. Ore reserves are located between 230 and 280 metres (755 ft and 919 ft) below surface and ore extraction required the establishment of a shaft network for access, ore hoisting and ventilation. Zeni Drilling Company from West Virginia, U.S.A. was contracted to blind drill two shafts for the project. Blind drilling was selected for various reasons, including timing which related to cost efficiency. The blind drill shaft technique has proved successful in this application and with enthusiastic and innovative support from the mining industry, will prove an efficient and cost effective means of accessing and operating underground mining projects of all sizes in the future.

Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi's remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won't guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation's underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation's under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States' raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. On the basis of tonnage, the sand and gravel industry is the second largest nonfuel mineral industry in the United States. In 1990, the production of sand and gravel was 927 Mt valued at $3.4 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 126 Mt, together with Texas, Washington, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 Sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 Sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see chapter on Industrial Sand and Sandstone and Glass Raw Materials). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material that is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Sand and gravel is also used as construction fill, road base and subbase, and decorative material. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates: Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15 to 20% water, 7 to 14% cement, and66 to 78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman and Reining, 1983). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate: Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.076 mm), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement aggregate. GEOLOGY General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. Suitable material is composed of clean, uncoated, properly shaped particles that are sound and durable. Soundness and durability are terms used to denote the ability of aggregates to retain a uniform physical and chemical state over a long period of time so as not to disintegrate when exposed to weathering and other destructive processes. Individual particles must be tough and firm, possessing the strength to resist physical stresses and chemical and physical changes, that may cause swelling, cracking, softening, and leaching. The aggregate should not be contaminated by excessive clayey material, silt, mica, organic matter, chemical salts, and surface coatings. Physical Properties: The quality of aggregate depends upon its physical and chemical properties. These, in turn, may be inherent mineralogical and textural features of the rock or may be the effects of later changes such as tectonics, mechanical or chemical weathering, or incrustations. The physical properties most significant for concrete use are: 1) abundance and nature of fractures and pores, 2) particle shape and surface texture, and 3) volume changes which may occur because of freezing and thawing or wetting and drying. An aggregate is considered to be physically sound if it is adequately strong and capable of resisting the agencies of weathering without disruption or decomposition. Minerals or rock particles that are physically weak, extremely water absorptive, and easily cleavable are susceptible to breakdown. The use of such materials in concrete reduces strength or leads to early deterioration by promoting weak bond between cement and aggregate, or by inducing cracking, spalling, or popouts. Severely weathered, soft, micaceous, or porous materials may cause localized stresses to develop in concrete by swelling and shrinking during wetting and drying or freezing and thawing cycles. Physical Suitability of the Various Rock Types. Sedimentary rocks have a wide range in physical and chemical qualities. Sand- stones and limestones, if hard and dense, are ordinarily satisfactory, but many sandstones are friable and excessively porous and commonly are clay-bearing. Shales generally make poor aggregate material, being soft, weak, and absorptive. Most igneous rocks are satisfactory, being normally hard, tough, and dense. Tuffs and certain flow rocks may be extremely porous and have high water absorption and low strength. Metamorphic rocks differ in character. Most quartzites are massive, tough, and dense. Fine-grained marbles are usually durable, but coarse-grained marbles have low abrasion resistance. Gneisses are ordinarily very tough and durable. Some schists contain micaceous minerals that are undesirable because they are soft, laminated, and absorptive. Micaceous minerals are susceptible to splitting along cleavage planes and thereby impair particle strength and durability. Some schists and slates in particular are thinly laminated and tend to assume flat slabby shapes that lack strength-and do not pack well. Any or all of these rock types may be rendered undesirable because of harmful exterior coatings. Weathering processes, particularly the action of ground waters, deposit these coatings. The most common coatings are calcium carbonate, clay, silt, opal, chalcedony, iron oxide, manganese oxide, and gypsum. Particles with these coatings are undesirable as aggregates because the bond between particle and coating may be weak, and decreasing the strength of the aggregate-cement bond.

The Turquoise Ridge gold deposit is located near the Getchell Mine, 72 km (42 miles) northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. The deposit is owned by First Miss Gold Inc. The host rocks consist of Ordovician and Cambrian age shales and limestones. They have been crosscut by the northeast-trending Turquoise Ridge shear zone and northwest-trending shear zones. Gold mineralization occurs at depths from 427 m (1 400 ft.) to 671 m (2 200 ft.), along the intersection of these structures. Large tonnage, flat-lying deposits occur where folded, favorable beds are intersected by the faults. The carbonate within the beds has been replaced with silica, pyrite and arsenic sulfides.

One of the foremost problems in reclaiming prime farmland is compaction of the subsoil which is caused by the reclamation equipment. Wheel tractor-scrapers are most commonly used to replace subsoil and have been blamed for the majority of the compaction problems. Two methods of alleviating this problem that are presently being considered are mechanical subsoil loosening machines and truck- shovel combinations for subsoil handling. A field study was conducted in which dry bulk density measurements were taken in an effort to determine the effectiveness of truck-shovel combinations and subsoil loosening equipment in reducing bulk density in comparison to typical scraper replacement.

"With regard to the EU funded project ‘Real-Time Mining’ a sensor-based acquisition, collection and transmission of data for the resource extraction process will be developed. The key concept promotes the change in paradigm from a discontinuous to a continuous process monitoring. Especially concerning material characterization, machine performance and underground positioning ‘Real-Time Mining’ will provide sensor solutions as well as the interfaces for integration, management and visualization of the collected data for a permanent updating process of the resource model with the aim of near real-time optimization of decisions. On the basis of ‘Real-Time Mining’-Output a permanent monitoring of costs can be performed as well in both, the installation and the production process of a mine. Due to the collected data in terms of machine performance connected with the underground positioning information added with personnel tracking and mine surveys a comprehensive overview of process performance is available. By evaluating those information in a specific manner costs per unit will arise for monitoring and possibly controlling actions. INTRODUCTION By having a look into the future of mineral extraction projects, a new challenge for the Ore Mining Industry will arise in the short and medium term. Due to the depletion of currently mined mineral reserves in addition to the persistently high demand of mineral raw materials, the extraction of complex reserves will be necessary. By characterizing such deposits as not constantly graded and geometrically varying, the extraction process, especially concerning the requirement of a minimized zero-value material handling, will become economically ineffective by utilizing the traditional mineral resource management methods. Regarding the state-of-the-art mineral resource management process along the mining value chain, an intermitted, discontinuous sequence of actions is applied (Figure 1). Recently data will be collected from drill hole cores. These rock samples are analyzed in a laboratory. Based on those analyses a resource model is created whereby unknown data between drill holes is interpolated. This resource model is the basis for all mine planning actions including the selection of the mining method, extraction sequencing and the prediction of the expected performance. With the start of the production, real conditions (concentrations of elements, hardness, stability, etc.) can be observed and measured. As the production process is running accordingly to the above described mine plan, the verification of the initial assumptions happens at the earliest after processing of the extracted material. Even if deviations between the predicted and the actual performance are now recognized, the execution of corrective actions is not possible anymore."

It is possible to have traceability in the mining industry, by parameters and signatures like particle mineralogy, mineral association, texture and mineral liberation. The study is on an apatite-iron ore deposit at Malmberget, Sweden, and characterizes an ore body both mineralogically and texturally in a quantitative manner by using analytical methods like optical microscopy, microprobe (EMPA) and an automatic SEM based system, Particle Texture Analysis (PTA). The mineralogy was evaluated by PTA and characterized by modal mineralogy, mineral liberation and mineral associations. Magnetite has a simple outline and straight grain boundaries and the gangue minerals have a finer particle size with a more complicated texture. The PTA analysis also shows that apatite is associated to magnetite as mixed particles, while smaller grains of magnetite are inclusions in feldspar. Result from particle texture analysis shows that there is a connection which link to the mine-to-mill context, and it may be used to create traceability. This link is not the associations of the main ore mineral magnetite, nor the modal mineralogy. Instead, it is the mineral associations of contaminating minerals (apatite and feldspar) that appear to be most promising since they survive from mine to mill. The modal mineralogy may be used to understand how contaminated minerals break into or out of particles size fraction during grinding.

2.1 INTRODUCTION When total extraction of an opening of sufficient size is reached in a horizontal coal seam, the roof strata in the overburden deform continuously to reach a new equilibrium condition. The severity of deformation decreases upward toward the surface. As the downward saggings of the strata propagate and reach the surface, there will be a depression zone on the surface directly above, but extending beyond the edges of the underground opening. This is the surface subsidence basin or surface subsidence trough. The surface subsidence basin is circular in plan view, if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is square in shape. But it is rectangular with rounded corners or elliptical if the coal seam is horizontal and the mined-out opening is a long- and thin rectangle or a short-rectangular, respectively (Fig. 2.1). Most underground openings (e.g., longwall panel) assume rectangular shape when total extraction has been completed. Theoretically the edges of the subsidence basin are the points of zero subsidence. But it is difficult to exactly locate the points of zero subsidence. Therefore in practice the points with vertical subsidence of 0.4 in. (10 mm) are used. The final subsidence basin is that which exists long after the mining has been completed, because its magnitude and shape are quite different from the dynamic subsidence basin formed while the face is moving. 2.2 CHARACTERISTICS AND TYPES OF DEFORMATION IN THE FINAL SUBSIDENCE BASIN For a horizontal coal seam, every point in the subsidence basin moves toward the center of the basin. Subsidence is maximum at the center of the basin. Any cross-section that passes through the point of maximum subsidence and either parallel to AB or CD line (Fig. 2.1) is a major cross-section along which principal directions of surface movements occur. However among those infinite numbers of major cross-sections, two specific ones are of special significance, not only because the magnitudes of surface movements are the largest, but also because they are the most easily identifiable directions, i.e., one that is parallel to the faceline at the center of the basin (CD in Fig. 2.1) and' the other is that perpendicular to the faceline but parallel to the diction of face advance (AB in Fig. 2.1). Nearly all the subsidence data obtained in the US have been derived from these two cross-sections, although some cross- sections parallel to CD but near the edges of the panel have also been included. In addition to moving horizontally toward the center of the basin, every point in the basin also subsides vertically. The magnitude of subsidence increases toward the center of the basin. Therefore surface subsidence is a three-dimensional problem and should be treated so in all cases. On all the major cross-sections, only principal subsidence and principal displacement occur. Since subsidence and displacement vary continuously in every major cross-section, three additional deformation components are de- rived, i.e., slope, curvature, and strain. On all other non-major cross-sections on the other hand the five components are accompanied by two additional components, i.e., twisting and shear strain. The seven components of the surface movement are defined as follows (Fig. 2.2): 1. Subsidence, S. On any cross-section, the vertical component of the surface movement vector is called surface subsidence. It generally points downward. But sometimes it points upward in areas ahead of the faceline or beyond the edges of the opening. In such cases it is a surface heave which is usually less than 6 in. 2. Displacement, U. On any cross-section, the horizontal component of the surface movement vector is called surface horizontal displacement. It generally points toward the center of the subsidence basin. But in steep terrain, it moves along the downdip direction 3. Slope, i. On any cross-section, the difference in surface subsidence between the two end points of a line section divided by the horizontal distance between the two points is called the surface slope of the section. 4. Curvature, K. On any cross-section, the difference in surface slope between two adjacent line sections divided by the average length of the two line sections is called the surface curvature of those two line sections. There are two types of curvature: con- vex or positive curvature and concave or negative curvature. 5. Horizontal strain, e. On any cross-section, the difference in horizontal displacement between any two points divided by the distance between the two points is called horizontal strain. If the distance between the two points is lengthening, it is tensile strain with positive sign. Conversely, if it is shortening, it is compressive strain with negative sign 6. Twisting, T. On the surface of the subsidence basin, the difference in slope between two parallel line sections divided by the distance between the two line sections is called twisting. 7. Shear strain, y. Shear strain is the changes in internal angles of a square on the surface of the subsidence basin or on any major cross-section. It is the summation of the differences in incremental (or decremental) lengths between the two opposite sides divided by the original distance between the two opposite sides. More precisely, the surface deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, curvature, twisting and shear) are defined by derivatives of surface movement components. For simplicity, the x- and y-axes of the cartesian coordinate system are set to be parallel and perpendicular to the cross-section of interest, respectively. In such a coordinate system, slope and curvature along x direction are the first and the second derivatives of the vertical components (S) of surface movement with respect to x, respectively, or i, = ds/dx and kx = d2s/dx2. Horizontal strain along x direction is the first derivative of the component along x direction of the horizontal displacement,

Discussion by Stephen Semeniuk Discussion As a valuator and SME member, I view Ross D. Lawrence's position as based on unproven and faulty assumptions made with regard to the pragmatic evidence presented in his paper. Moreover, his call for the inclusion of all mineral resources in discounted cash flow valuations is redundant, if not irrelevant, as there are procedures that already take all classes of mineralization into consideration for valuation purposes. In my experience as a valuator, I find that Canadian securities regulators are more than accommodating in allowing any valuations of mineral properties to be based on cash flow calculations. In other business areas, the same regulators usually reject discounted cash flow valuations of projects or businesses with no operating history. Instead, the regulators prefer valuations to be based on other transactions tested in the marketplace. Valuations based on actual market transactions are less subjective than discounted cash flow calculations and/or the capitalization of arbitrary, untested or undemonstrated earnings projections. In the mining and minerals sector, such projections may be made by persons not qualified to make such projections. In support of this statement, I direct readers to the article "Valuation of mineral properties which do not contain exploitable reserves" by Lionel C. Kilburn, which appeared in the August 1990 issue of the CIM Bulletin. To quote from the article: "Value of a mineral property depends basically upon metal prices, recoverable grades, mining and metallurgical practices, commodity supply and demand, and political-economic conditions, all of which vary with time. The skills of geologists and engineers properly apply to the first field of expertise. Knowledge and consideration of the other four fields is important, but such advice is more properly sought from marketing experts, economists and stockbrokers." Securities regulators have created no hardship for valuators by excluding unsubstantiated resources in discounted cash flow valuations. In the field of engineering, best design practices apply. A margin of safety is built into the design criteria for any new equipment or structure that will exceed normally expected load levels and stresses, even though such considerations imply higher front end costs. In accounting, the comparable operating principle is conservatism. It explains why, for balancesheet presentation purposes, inventory is stated at cost or market, whichever is the lowest value. Similarly, when the engineering or geoscience-based valuator plays in the field of finance, the rules of accounting and applied economics apply. Regulators in their skepticism of income-based valuations are in tune with similar views already expressed in mining literature. To quote H. The electrokinetic and flotation behavior of the green alga Chlorella vulgaris was studied in the absence and presence of Pb(II), Al (III) and flotation collectors. It was found that the presence of Al (III) is necessary for good flotation of the organism whether or not Pb(II) is present when dodecylammonium chloride or sodium dodecylsulfate is used as collector. Best flotation using dodecylamine is at about pH 8 and best flotation when using sodium dodecylsulfate is at about pH 4. It appears because of the small size of the organisms that the Al (III) is necessary for flocculation to enhance bubble-cell contact and C. vulgaris removal from water. When N-dodecyl-2-aminoproprionic acid is used as collector good flotation occurs at about pH 4 without the addition of Al (III).

This paper summarizes some preliminary results of the Illinois State Geological Surveys current investigation into surface subsidence resulting from coal mining in Illinois. The purpose of the study is to characterize-the vertical movements that may result from various types of underground coal mining. In general there is relatively little published information about subsidence from room-and-pillar mining as compared with longwall mining. The findings of this study, based on mining operations in a variety of geologic settings, delineate the magnitude, shape, and position of the subsidence profile. Comparisons of case histories of subsidence are based primarily on the extraction ratio and the general geometry of the mine (depth, panel width, and mining height).

During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

"The ground water heat pump system lades underground hot water which can be heated or cooled by heat exchanger in water source heat pump air conditioner. This system replaces the model of heating of air-conditioning by refrigerator and boiler. In this paper, the formation conditions of hot water energy in Shan Dong are analyzed in order to achieve the purpose of energy conservation and emissions reduction by taking full advantage of water resources such as water pouring and return water of beatification during the productive process of underground metal mine. In order to analyze the issue better, the paper points out some ways and methods for geothermal water often used in underground metal mine. This paper also presents the advantages of the technology of water source heat pump that is applied into underground metal mine. Here is a case study of comprehensive utilization of water source in a certain underground metal mine in Ji Ning. This mine, according to its own actual situation, designs heat pump heat exchange system which is used for indoor heating of buildings and bath for staff. It turns out that the system can save 23% water per year, cut down 3.303 million KW electric energy, and reduce 4160t emission of carbon dioxide. It is concluded that the technology of water source heat pump has broad application prospects in underground metal mine. Therefore, the results show that it is an ideal way to change the present structure of cooling and heating source in metal mine.Introduction In recent years, overuse of fossil fuels has posed a grave threat onto the environment, which makes renewable energy a more important status in energy structure. Development and utilization of renewable energy has become an important direction. Water source heat pump technology is to use solar energy stored in water as cold/heat source to convert energy. Currently, this technology has been widely used in some advanced countries. However, due to facers of implementation technology and component costs, there is still a gap in water source heat pump technology between China and these advanced countries. According to (Blum et al 2011) that after in-depth study, water source heat pump technology has developed rapidly in China recently, and the gap is gradually reduced. Groundwater source heat pump system as a kind of high efficiency, energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology in recent years, more and more get the people's attention. At the same time, its practical application has also been rapid development. Based on (Ni et al 2015) that According to the relevant departments of the prediction, the technology will become the 21st century the most efficient heating and cooling technology."
