The Tintaya mine of BHP Copper, located in Southern Peru, includes a copper oxide deposit hosted in a mineralized skarn zone. The ore contains large amounts of clays and high acid consuming species resulting in low heap leaching performance. A treatment scheme was proposed that included a wet screening separation. The coarse fraction would be treated by heap and the fines by agitation leaching. The dissolved copper would then be recovered through solvent extraction and electrowinning (SXEW). Testwork determined the optimum heap leaching conditions to treat the oxide in on/off pads of 3 meter height with an initial acid cure followed by variable acid strength during irrigation. The method resulted in a reduced acid consumption and good copper recoveries.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. Sampling data from large mined out areas of, existing Witwatersrand mines is split into areas accepted as 'mines' and used to provide for each mine the equivalent of a number of sets of borehole values as well as the follow-up 'actual' value. This data is used to establish the spatial structures on a macro scale between 'mines' for grade as well as variance and the suitability of the three-parameter lognormal model Is tested for the borehole and 'mine' frequency distributions. A comprehensive range of borehole valuation techniques is then applied to a large number of borehole sets on an individual mine basis. The results for each technique are then compared with the corresponding follow-up 'actual' values for these mines. After normalisation via the three- parameter lognormal model the estimates are also correlated with the 'actuals' to define any conditional biasses and to establish the observed error distributions and error variances of the estimates. On this basis the various techniques are rated for their relative efficiencies and the significance of the advantages gained.

In many ways a government could be regarded as a macro business enterprise. Its shareholders are its peoples, the productivity of the nation depends on them, and, indeed, the profits or losses of a nation's balance sheet can be linked to the surplus or deficit in its balance of payments. International loans need to be repaid, and in most developing nations the noose is tied so tightly that one wonders if such debts will ever be repaid. In their endeavour to meet such obligations, their currencies may be devalued [sometimes in frightening proportions], in the hope of boosting the export potential. However, this is a vicious circle, since exports will not be achievable unless sufficient technical expertise and infrastructure exist to address the opportunities which may have been created through devaluation. Many of the poorer countries have exportable resources of minerals, which are supplied on the international market. This may be the good news, but, unhappily, steps were seldom taken to enhance the value of the mineral products through further beneficiation and the production of high-value sophisticated products. That is where the vicious circle comes in: inadequate infrastructure is created, competent and well-trained manpower is not generated, and the result has inevitably been that the GDP slips backwards, and the nation becomes progressively impoverished. To exacerbate the problem, it is unfortunate that the more impoverished a nation becomes, the greater is its birthrate, and hence the greater the need to create wealth at the very time that the nation is becoming poorer and poorer. Within this scenario, one may well reflect that this is exactly what nations on the African Continent are experiencing, namely exploding populations, although most of the poorest nations in the world are found on this continent. Yet they often possess a superior mineral production potential. Africa still suffers from what may be called the colonial influence, in that the developed world has regarded this continent as a source of raw materials to feed its own factories. The colonial powers gave only secondary attention to developing the nation's peoples and its infrastructure, such as railways, roads, harbours, and other services. These problems all naturally fall within the ambit of government interest, and it is therefore obvious that the state should play a dominant role in addressing them. The reasons for governmental involvement in mineral-related research and development differ considerably, depending on the state of industrial development of that country. Thus, in the highly industrialised world, government's interest will lie mostly in the fields of strategic minerals, which may not be economically exploitable. An example would be the exploitation of American low-grade chromites during the Second World War, or minerals which need to be imported from unfriendly or unreliable sources, such that disruption would not be in the national interest. Colonial powers like the United Kingdom and France established R&D facilities to assist, inter alia, in the exploitation of mineral resources in their colonies. The approach of developing countries would differ from that of the industrialised nations, in that their primary quest would be to promote, support and encourage the development of infrastructure, and the establishment of major industries in order to create and provide employment opportunities, as well as to support small operators who cannot afford to undertake their own research and development. On the debit side, it is a sad fact that, however good their intentions may be, underdeveloped countries are invariably unable to provide the requisite financial support to sustain their own research-and-development laboratories. In a high-tech world, the cost of sophisticated equipment is steep and cannot be afforded. Again, the proverbial vicious circle comes into play. The competent researchers find themselves without rewarding employment and would therefore shun such institutions. Recent trends in the developed world have been to privatise research-and-development institutions, the argument being that they should draw closer to the industry they serve, and that the provision of taxpayers' money for strategic purposes is no longer as important as it may have been once. Complete state withdrawal has had its negative effect in that long-range, high-calibre research has tended to be replaced by short-term problem-solving projects. Industries engaged in the minerals business differ somewhat from major ones, like motor, computer or pharmaceutical industries, which are large enough to support their own internal research and development, and whose work is highly confidential, so that any leakage could have disastrous consequences. Furthermore, private companies are answerable to their shareholders and costly long-range, 'blue-sky' research would be difficult to justify. Since mineral research has become of lesser importance in the sophisticated First World, this trend has persisted. On the positive side, R&D institutions which are totally financed by government, suffer because they tend to forget the reason for their existence. They have often become a form of auxiliary to an academic institution where higher degrees are collected by scientific boffins who, in their quest for academic excellence, tend to disregard the benefits that industry may ultimately gain from this research endeavour. The trend in recent years - and South Africa is no exception - has been for the state to progressively reduce its subsidy, whilst at the same time encouraging research organisations [for their ongoing survival] to interact closely with industry, and to conduct work directly for them on a contract basis. Organisations such as CSIRO in Australia, CANMET in Canada, the USBM in the United States and Mintek in South Africa all generate income from the private sector. Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal slurry taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

Gulf Research & Development Company conducted the nation's first underground coal gasification test in steeply dipping beds near Rawlins, Wyoming. The geotechnical considerations played a major role in the initial site selection. The test plan included a detailed geotechnical program for site evaluation, test design, permitting, and environmental studies before the burn. During burn, the geotechnical activity continued in the form of monitoring surface subsidence and acoustic emission. The postburn evaluation included studies of the drill cores obtained from the burn zone and effects on the surrounding rock mass.

Bound water plays an important role in the processing and utilization of numerous materials and mineral processing systems. The fundamental nature of this near surface bound (vicinal) water is yet to be understood in its complete detail. The objective of this paper is to use dielectric measurements to characterize the bound water near hydrophobic and hydrophilic oxide surfaces. It is anticipated that a combination of dielectric property measurements and characteristic relaxation times will allow for more effective analysis of the interfacial water.

Planned tunnel projects with advanced geotechnical investigations are more frequently being suspended because of changes in funding, politics, or local priorities. Some of these projects are ultimately canceled, some decelerate and stall, some resume after a short pause, and some restart after being mothballed for several years. The restarted project often differs at least slightly from the predecessor project in terms of alignment and design concept. This paper describes approaches to evaluating the quality and completeness of previous geotechnical investigations for a re-activated project, considering technological advances as well as changes in regulatory requirements, contracting approach, and site conditions which may have taken place in the time since the project was suspended.

This chapter describes the nature and occurrence of the principal clay minerals that are used as ceramic raw materials, explains how these raw materials are used to produce finished goods, and summarizes positive and negative trends that will affect future demand for raw materials and products in the ceramic industry. The term ceramics was derived from the ancient Greek keramikos (a clay jar). A ceramic product is a material that has been fired to at least 468.3°C (Mitchell, 1983). In addition to being one of our earliest manufacturing and construction materials, ceramic products are among the earliest records of civilization. The enduring significance of ceramics is shown by the fact that, even today, the manufacture of whitewares, brick and related red-fired wares, refractories, and engineered ceramics continues to be a major sector of the US economy. A wide range of materials can be made into ceramic products, although relatively few earth materials make up most of the ceramics in today's markets (Table 1). Most ceramic products are made from clay or a related material. The long history of clay use in the ceramics industry stems from its variable and sometimes unique physical and chemical properties, as well as its ubiquitous occurrence and relatively low cost. Clay is important to ceramics because of its plasticity, moldability and filterability, chemical content, color. refractoriness, solubility. corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and other properties that result from the essentially two dimensional morphology of the individual clay mineral platelets. Because of their basic relationships to the chemical and physical properties of clays, the chemical and mineralogical content have been the subject of continuous studies over the past few decades. Advances in knowledge about the chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of clays are responsible for most of the advances in processing. The need to remove off-colored contaminants, minerals with low melting points, and soluble salts has resulted in beneficiation by wet processing methods such as water washing. Water washing is restricted to kaolins, although low cost methods of water washing have been extended more recently to ball clays in Europe. High intensity magnetic filtration and flotation technologies have noticeably improved the quality of kaolins and broadly expanded their use in the ceramics industry. In addition to products for construction (e.g., brick, tile, sewer pipe, field drain pipe, cement, fiberglass, roof granules, and paint) and manufacturing (e.g., refractories, kiln furniture, sanitary ware, pottery, and dinnerware), clays are used in calcined form as ceramic fillers, carriers, extenders, and grogs. Ceramics suppliers are under economic pressure in several of these product areas. Manufacture of refractories in America has declined as steel production has decreased. MOCCA is a Multivariable Optimal Constrained Control Algorithm developed specifically for non-square industrial control applications with practical difficulties such as interactions, time delays, constraints, modelling development, etc. MOCCA consists of an off-line simulation/translation module, for tuning the control parameters, and an on-line module that implements the designed control law. This paper describes an evaluation of MOCCA on the Hemlo grinding circuit which comprises one open circuit ball mill and two closed circuit ball mills in series. In this case a 4x4 unconstrained control problem was considered. The manipulated variables included the fresh ore feed rate and three pump box water additions. The controlled variables were the grinding circuit product particle size and three pump box levels. In this application soft constraints were implemented through control action and control error weighting. The feedforward capability of MOCCA was used to compensate for a measured water flow disturbance to one of the pump boxes. MOCCA performed very well during plant evaluations when compared to the original classical multi-loop control strategy and proved to be quite robust. Perhaps most importantly, the process engineers and plant operators have a high level of comfort both in understanding MOCCA's general operating principles, and with its demonstrated performance.

Operating Efficiency: compares the operating work index, calculated from production comminution machinery operating data, to the Bond Work Index from bench scale comminution tests or calculated from pilot plant operating data. INTRODUCTION Phosphatic resources may be quantified in terms of ore tons and phosphate analyses; however, to quantify phosphate reserves it is necessary to estimate the tons and quality of phosphate rock that can be extracted from the ore. The yield and grade of phosphate rock that can recovered from sedimentary phosphate deposits are usually difficult to estimate because of variations in stratigraphy and/or mineralogy. Prospecting phosphorite ores for purposes of estimating reserves and preparing mine plans requires considerably more effort than defining ore thickness and P205 content. In Florida, for example, it is standard practice to prospect by core drilling and to subject each strata (split) to beneficiation testing, and to perform detailed chemical analyses on the beneficiated products from each strata. For a completed drilling pattern the area of influence of each hole is 2.5 acres. The number of strata per drill hole typically varies from two to five, and thus complete prospecting of a 40acre tract requires drilling 16 core holes and beneficiation testing of about 48 ore samples. Florida practice is not appropriate for all phosphorite deposits. Functional drill rigs and trained drillers may not be readily available. Water for core drilling may be unavailable and the characteristics of either the overburden or ore may require careful attention and excessive cost to obtain representative core samples. Alternate ore sampling methods include auger drilling, rotary drilling to obtain cuttings, and the excavation of trenches, pits, and shafts. Drill cuttings samples are generally the least expensive to obtain, but they are usually unsuitable for beneficiation testing because of particle size reduction during drilling. Ore samples from surface trenches and pits are expensive and may not be representative of deeper ore. Ore samples from shafts are the most expensive to obtain, but if taken properly they are reliable for use in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Regardless of the prospecting technique used, reliable estimates of the yield and grade of phosphate rock that can be extracted from an ore deposit are required: • to justify capital expenditures for a new mine • for mine design and mine planning • for beneficiation plant design • for production forecasts, quality control, and marketing. This paper describes models that predict the beneficiation response of ores from three phosphate ore deposits. The purpose of these models is to obtain maximum utilization of available prospect data with the least cost. ORE DEPOSITS Simple beneficiation models have been developed for ores from three sedimentary phosphate deposits around the Mediterranean area. The first deposit, herein described as "A" ore, is located north of the Mediterranean Sea. The second deposit, designated as "B" ore, is located east of the Mediterranean Sea, while the third deposit, "C" ore, is located south of the Mediterranean Sea. Ore "C" is from the Sra Ouertane deposit in northwestern Tunisia.

In some cases, coal barrier pillars must be relied on to withstand high hydrostatic pressures in order to prevent inundation of active mine workings. Such barriers are particularly important in areas, such as parts of West Virginia, where much of the future mining is down dip of mines which have been abandoned, or are currently being worked. Also, where multiple seam mining is conducted, a barrier pillar in one mine may be critical to safety in a mine in a lower seam. MSHA's Coal Mine Safety and Health district offices and the Mine Waste and Geotechnical Engineering Branch of the Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, have recently been involved in the study of barrier pillars in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Oklahoma. In this paper, the factors involved in determining the required width of pillar are discussed, past practices for sizing barriers are reviewed, and related current Federal regulations are examined. In addition, the results of laboratory testing of bottom rock are presented.

The Paupers Dream Property is located in the northern Boulder Mountains, southwestern Montana, 30 km southwest of Helena. The property is situated in the central portion of the Butte-Helena gold belt, a NE trending lineament marking a zone of recurrent, late-Cretaceous to mid-Tertiary volcanic activity. Geology consists of a plutonic basement of late-Cretaceous quartz monzonite overlain by a pre-volcanic basal conglomerate and a complex sequence of Oligocene rhyolitic volcanics. Gold mineralization occurs in fracture-controlled quartz veins, silicified stockwork, and brecciated shear zones as auriferous pyrite, arsenopyrite, and disseminated free gold. An estimated 60,000 tonnes averaging 2.5 g/t was produced from the Porphyry Dike, Venus, and Paupers Dream Mines on the property. Current drill indicated reserves (May, 19861 are placed at 6,946,000 tonnes averaging 1.45 g/t gold.

In recent years, the bioleaching of sulfidic raw materials has been of great interest. However, the application of this biotechnology is now very limited for many different complex reasons. The mechanism of the chemical and electrochemical reactions taking part in the process is not well understood. The application of electrochemical techniques is useful in its elucidation. Among the common sulfides, galena has been studied very little with respect to its behavior during bioleaching. Therefore, the electrochemical evolution of massive electrodes of lead sulfide in the presence and absence of' a mixed culture of mesophilic microorganisms was investi¬gated by the application of potentiometry, anodic and ca¬thodic polarization and cyclic voltammetry. The agitation rate, the use of pH control and the composition of the nutrient mediums did not have any significant affects on the oxidation of galena. However, the temperature (25 'to 45 °C), the scan rate (4 to 100 mV/s) and the acid used to adjust the pH were significant variables that influenced sulfide oxidation. There¬fore, the peak (600 to 1,000 mV) corresponding to the oxida¬tion of sulfide ions from the mineral was only detected in the presence of a complexing anion of lead. In the presence of bacteria, the peaks corresponding to galena oxidation de¬creased and, at the same time, new peaks appeared both during the oxidation at -300 mV and during the reduction of the mineral surface at 150 and -300 mV. These signals were more important when the attack time increased. The rest potential of bioleached mineral increased with an increase in leaching time, which was related to the electrochemical transformation of the galena surface.

From a gathering storm of climate change based legislation that could potentially overwhelm the mining industry, to the nuts and bolts of mineral processing and just about everything in between, about 100 mining and mineral processing professionals heard it at all at the 60th annual Colorado MPD Meeting April 22-24 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, CO. With a sweeping agenda under the banner ?What in the world is new in mining and metallurgy? attendees were treated to four sessions and 21 presentations that covered the range of mining industry issues. Bill Reid, president, chief executive officer and director of Gold Resources Corp., spoke about his company?s El Aquila gold project in Mexico. With five projects in Mexico, Gold Resources Corps. is aiming to become a low-cost gold and silver producer. Its flagship property, the El Aguila gold project, is a high-grade gold and silver property with significant base metal credits of copper, lead and zinc. Production of the El Aguila project was targeted for mid-2009. Reid said that three high-grade deposits have been discovered at the El Aguila project. They include the high-grade ?manto? style El Aguila openpit deposit, the El Aire high-grade polyme-tallic vein system, which is underground, and the underground La Arista high-grade polymetallic vein system. The project is located 120 km (75 miles) south-east of the capital city of Oaxaca, Mexico. Reid said the property has yielded several exceptional gold and silver surface samples, including a 36-g/t (1.1 oz/st) gold sample and a 3,100-g/t (90 oz/st) silver sample. Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

The advantages of recirculation of air in underground mines have been well recognized, and several papers have been written on the subject. Issues of concern to the various segments of the mining industry relate to the health and safety of workers, specifically, methane and respirable dust build-up in the air, high humidity and temperature at the work face. This paper presents a survey of various studies pertaining to recirculation as a prelude to the experimental and quantitative studies performed by the authors. Experiments were performed at a trona mine on the transportation and deposition of dust along the return airways, for three different velocities. Modeling studies were performed using dust deposition models. The model predicted data were compared with experimental data in order to lay the foundation for the development of advanced predictor models for recirculation in trona mines. Two models for dust deposition were analyzed. The model predicted data are in divergence from the experimental data, indicating the need to develop better models.
